Abstract:Progress on developing chromium-, iron- and nickel-based catalysts for ethylene oligomerization during the last decade was reviewed. Chromium-based catalysts mainly included chromium complexes bearing tridentate ligands with ligating atoms of phosphorus, nitrogen and sulfur, and diphosphinoamine ligands. The former could be used to produce 1-hexene very selectively. The activity of catalyst with the ligand could reach 1.6 × 105 g/mole-hr. The latter could control selectivity to 1-hexene and 1-octene by varying substituents of ligands. Iron-based catalysts mainly included iron complexes of bis(imino) pyridine, pyridinylimine, and 2-imino-1,10-phenanthroline. The oligomers produced followed Schluz-Flory rules with higher selectivity to α-olefins. Bis(imino) pyridine iron complexes exhibited highest activity of 5 × 109 g/(mole-hr). Ligands of nickel-based catalysts mainly included natural ligands with nitrogen or phosphorus atoms and N,O- or P,O-coordinated anion ligands. α-Diimine nickel complexes were higher in catalytic activity, while most of other nickel complexes were not so active. Oligomers with short-chain could be obtained from them, but selectivity to α-olefins was not promising.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene is an essential process in the upgrading of the crude C4 cut from the petroleum chemical sector.Catalyst design is crucial to achieve a virtually alkadiene-free product while avoiding over-hydrogenating valuable olefins.In addition to the great industrial rel-evance,this demanding selectivity pattern renders 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation a widely used model reaction to discriminate selective hydrogenation catalysts in academia.Nonetheless,critical reviews on the catalyst development are extremely lacking in literature.In this review,we aim to provide the reader an in-depth overview of different catalyst families,particularly the precious metal-based monometallic catalysts (Pd,Pt,and Au),developed in the last half century.The empha-sis is placed on the development of new strategies to design high-performance architectures,the establishment of structure-performance relationships,and the reaction and deactivation mecha-nisms.Thrilling directions for future optimization of catalyst formulations and engineering aspect are also provided.

Abstract:Selective electrochemical hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes under ambient conditions is a promising alternative to the traditional energy-intensive and high-cost thermocatalytic hydrogenation. However, the systematic summary on the electrocatalysts and electrolyzers remains lacked. Herein, we demonstrate a comprehensive review about recent achievements in the electrocatalysts including noble metal and non-noble-metal materials. Several effective strategies of catalyst design were developed to improve alkyne conversion, and alkene selectivity e.g., accelerating the formation of active hydrogen species, enhancing alkyne adsorption and suppressing the side reactions. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of various electrolyzers are systematically discussed. Accordingly, major challenges and future trends in this field are proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Selective hydrogenations lay at the heart of many industrial processes. The archetypal catalysts for this class of reactions are generally prepared by ‘metal poisoning’ strategies: the active metal is protected and selectively deactivated with various compounds. This approach has been applied for decades, with limited understanding. Low product selectivity and presence of toxic elements in the catalyst pose severe constraints in the utilization of these materials in the future. Thus, to develop more sustainable catalysts, this field has recently gained momentum. This Review analyzes the concepts and frontiers that have been developed in the last decade: from nanostructuring less conventional metals in order to improve their ability to activate H 2 , to the use of oxides as active phases, from alloying, to the ensemble control in hybrid materials, and site isolation approaches in single‐site heterogeneous catalysts. Particular attention is given to the hydrogenation of alkynes and nitroarenes, two reactions at the core of the chemical industry, importantly applied in the manufacture of polymers, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and agrochemicals. The strategies here identified can be transposed to other relevant hydrogenations and can guide in the design of more advanced materials.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation reactions provide a pivotal and promising strategy for upgrading substances with unsaturated functional groups, in which supported non-noble metal catalysts play a crucial role in determining catalytic performance toward desirable products. By means of a precipitation method, hydrothermal and solvothermal methods, sol–gel synthesis as well as ion exchange method, various kinds of supported catalysts with high efficiency have been reasonably designed and developed. The detailed investigations by virtue of comprehensive studies demonstrated that in addition to the inherent properties of metal elements, the nanosized effect, the metal-alloy effect, and the metal–support interaction impose significant influences on the resulting catalytic behavior. Moreover, we discuss the catalytic applications of heterogeneous non-noble metal catalysts with focus on the catalytic hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes/ketones, alkynes and alkadienes, and functionalized nitroaromatic hydrocarbons. In this review, on the basis of achievements in the representative investigations, suggestions and prospects for the further progresses in the development of heterogeneous non-noble metal catalysts toward selective hydrogenation reactions have been put forward.

Abstract:Researchers have been attempting to characterize heterogeneous catalysts in situ in addition to correlating their structures with their activity and selectivity in spite of many challenges. Here, we review recent experimental and theoretical advances regarding alkyne selective hydrogenation by Pd-based catalysts, which are an important petrochemical reaction. The catalytic selectivity for the reaction of alkynes to alkenes is influenced by the composition and structure of the catalysts. Recent progress achieved through experimental studies and atomic simulations has provided useful insights into the origins of the selectivity. The important role of the subsurface species (H and C) was revealed by monitoring the catalyst surface and the related catalytic performance. The atomic structures of the Pd catalytic centers and their relationship with selectivity were established through atomic simulations. The combined knowledge gained from experimental and theoretical studies provides a fundamental understanding of catalytic mechanisms and reveals a path toward improved catalyst design.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic semi-hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene has recently attracted attention as a process for removing acetylene from ethylene-rich gas streams due to its mild conditions and energy-saving advantages. However, developing catalysts with low cost and high selectivity for acetylene semi-hydrogenation remains a huge challenge. Here, we investigated the effect of hydroxyl group modification on the acetylene semi-hydrogenation selectivity of poly(heptazine imide) (PHI) supported metal single atom catalyst under alkaline conditions by density functional theory calculations. The results show that hydroxyl group as ligand not only increases the steric resistance of acetylene adsorption, but also acts as electron-withdrawing group to delocalize the electrons of metal atoms, weaken the interaction with acetylene and subsequent intermediates, and make the adsorption moderate, which is beneficial to the desorption of ethylene and avoid over-hydrogenation. The Ni-OH/PHI and Fe-2OH/PHI are capable of achieving the selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene and have good thermodynamic stability, which can be used as ideal catalysts for the electrocatalytic semi-hydrogenation of acetylene to selectively generate ethylene. This study provides theoretical guidance for the rational design of electrocatalysts for the selective semi-hydrogenation of acetylene.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation is crucial in the production of high-value chemicals, yet its efficient implementation remains challenging due to the absence of clear catalyst regulation strategies and in-depth insights into catalytic mechanisms. This paper discusses several feasible solutions for achieving efficient selective hydrogenation by adjusting the fine structure of catalysts drawing from our successful examples in recent work. Building upon a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of heterogeneous catalysis, structure-performance relations, and insights gleaned from our previous achievements, we identify 'group recognition' as the central mechanism for achieving efficient selective hydrogenation. Our catalyst design strategies revolve around three key aspects: adjusting geometric structure, controlling electronic structure, and regulating the local domain of active sites. Furthermore, we present the latest advancements in decoupling the geometric and electronic effects, addressing the longstanding challenge of disentangling these intertwined factors. It is our conviction that this paper offers valuable experience and innovative ideas for realizing efficient selective hydrogenation.
Hydrophobic Surface Modification of Cu-Based Catalysts for Enhanced Semihydrogenation of Acetylene in Excess Ethylene

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts have gained significant attention in the semihydrogenation of acetylene, a vital industrial process for ethylene stream purification. Nevertheless, their potential has been hindered by limited activity and stability issues stemming from polymerization. Here, we provide a surface enrichment strategy with hydrophobic modification that enriches the remaining trace amounts of acetylene in the gas flow, thereby avoiding the additional temperature rise required due to limited mass transfer under complete conversion conditions. The decrease in reaction temperature and steric hindrance of hydrophobic chains on the surface of Cu reduced the coupling side reaction, thereby improving the selectivity (84%) and stability (>120 h) at full conversion. Particularly, this was achieved by the synergistic catalysis among CuCx, Cu, and hydrophobic chains due to the in situ phase transition of Cu during the reaction. This strategy is expected to shed light on the reported nonprecious metal catalysts for further improvement of catalytic performance.

Abstract:Abstract Partial hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons comprises an important family of reactions that are applied in many industrial sectors. Understanding the hydrogenation of polyunsatured and polyunsaturated compounds on heterogeneous catalysts at its molecular level remains a challenging milestone to fine‐tune the product distribution. Our study presents a detailed mechanistic analysis of the gas phase hydrogenation of vinylacetylene (1‐butene‐3‐yne) and valylene (2‐methyl‐1‐butene‐3‐yne) over palladium and copper catalysts. These two metals are selected owing to their pronounced differences in continuous flow catalytic tests at ambient pressure. The chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, isomerization, and oligomerization patterns measured in a broad range of feed hydrogen/hydrocarbon ratios are rationalized by density functional theory simulations. An extended Brønsted–Evans–Polanyi relationship for both substrates and active metals is found for the hydrogenation processes. The identified factors that govern selectivity are similar to those identified for smaller C 2 and C 3 compounds and, thus, a means of systematization to other polyunsaturated compounds is opened up.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of acetylene is a vital process to for the purification of crude ethylene in petroleum industry. Achieving high activity and selectivity simultaneously over Ni-based catalysts is still challenging. Herein, a partial encapsulation strategy is proposed by fabricating carbon-encapsulated Ag nanoparticles and un-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles on Al 2 O 3 surface (Ni-Ag@C/Al 2 O 3 ) toward the enhanced selectivity without loss of activity. In particular, the Ni-Ag@C/Al 2 O 3 exhibits higher ethylene selectivity of 81% at the complete acetylene conversion along with excellent stability for 30-h, in sharp with the Ni/Al 2 O 3 (6%) and Ni-Ag/Al 2 O 3 (54%) catalyst. The enhanced selectivity is attributed to the promotion of hydrogen spillover by the carbon species on Al 2 O 3 surface and the inhibition of oligomer formation by a steric hindrance formed by the carbon layer on the Ag surface. This study provides a new structural design avenue of bifunctional bimetallic catalyst for selective hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Ester hydrogenation is one of the key steps in the synthesis of high value-added bulk oxygenated chemicals from syngas, as well as the crucial part in conversion of natural oil or biomass-derived compounds. Cu-based catalyst has been widely used in gas-phase ester hydrogenation, owing to its excellent activity and selectivity for C–O/C=O bonds hydrogenation. In this review, we focused on the advances in recent years concerning the structure-performance relationship of Cu-based catalysts and their catalytic behaviors in ester hydrogenation reactions, and summarized the strategy for constructing the catalysts and corresponding coupling effects of adsorption, reaction and diffusion on the catalytic performance. Furthermore, the industrial practice and promising possibilities in catalyst development were introduced.
Pd Single‐Atom Catalysts on Nitrogen‐Doped Graphene for the Highly Selective Photothermal Hydrogenation of Acetylene to Ethylene

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene in an ethylene‐rich gas stream is an important process in the chemical industry. Pd‐based catalysts are widely used in this reaction due to their excellent hydrogenation activity, though their selectivity for acetylene hydrogenation and durability need improvement. Herein, the successful synthesis of atomically dispersed Pd single‐atom catalysts on nitrogen‐doped graphene (Pd1/N‐graphene) by a freeze‐drying‐assisted method is reported. The Pd1/N‐graphene catalyst exhibits outstanding activity and selectivity for the hydrogenation of C2H2 with H2 in the presence of excess C2H4 under photothermal heating (UV and visible‐light irradiation from a Xe lamp), achieving 99% conversion of acetylene and 93.5% selectivity to ethylene at 125 °C. This remarkable catalytic performance is attributed to the high concentration of Pd active sites on the catalyst surface and the weak adsorption energy of ethylene on isolated Pd atoms, which prevents C2H4 hydrogenation. Importantly, the Pd1/N‐graphene catalyst exhibits excellent durability at the optimal reaction temperature of 125 °C, which is explained by the strong local coordination of Pd atoms by nitrogen atoms, which suppresses the Pd aggregation. The results presented here encourage the wider pursuit of solar‐driven photothermal catalyst systems based on single‐atom active sites for selective hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation has a long history of being an important reaction process for the preparation of high-value chemicals. The geometric and electronic structures of the catalysts largely determine their basic catalytic performance, including activity, selectivity, and stability. However, the complexity of the components and structures of the catalytic active sites poses a significant challenge to the characterization and the sequential performance attribution. On the basis of summarizing the geometric and electronic structure research in this field, this Review will pay special attention to the adsorption and activation modes of reactants, reaction kinetics, identification and classification of structural sensitivity, methods for geometric and electronic regulation, and distinctive concepts for catalyst design, to enlighten the further development of high-efficiency hydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogenation reactions play a critical role in the synthesis of value‐added products within the chemical industry. Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) using water as the hydrogen source has emerged as an alternative to conventional thermocatalytic processes for sustainable and decentralized chemical synthesis under mild conditions. Among various ECH catalysts, copper‐based (Cu‐based) nanomaterials are promising candidates due to their earth‐abundance, unique electronic structure, versatility, and high activity/selectivity. Herein, recent advances in the application of Cu‐based catalysts in ECH reactions for the upgrading of valuable chemicals are systematically analyzed. The unique properties of Cu‐based catalysts in ECH are initially introduced, followed by the design strategies to enhance their activity and selectivity. Then, typical ECH reactions on Cu‐based catalysts are presented in detail, including carbon dioxide reduction for multicarbon generation, alkyne‐to‐alkene conversion, selective aldehyde conversion, ammonia production from nitrogen‐containing substances, and amine production from organic nitrogen compounds. In these catalysts, we focus on the role of catalyst composition and nanostructures toward different products. The co‐hydrogenation of two substrates (e.g., CO2 and NOxn, CO2 and SO32–, etc.) via C–N, C–S, and C–C cross‐coupling reactions are also highlighted. Finally, the critical issues and future perspectives of Cu‐catalyzed ECH are proposed to accelerate the rational development of next‐generation catalysts. This article is protected by copyright. Selective electrocatalytic semihydrogenation of acetylene impurities for the production of polymer-grade ethylene

Abstract:The current thermocatalytic acetylene hydrogenation process suffers from the use of excessive hydrogen and the noble metal Pd, high temperatures and overhydrogenation. Here we report an electrocatalytic semihydrogenation strategy to selectively reduce acetylene impurities to ethylene under ambient conditions. For a crude ethylene flow that contains 1 × 104 ppm acetylene, electrochemically deposited Cu dendrites exhibited a high specific selectivity of 97%, continuous production of a polymer-grade ethylene stream (4 ppm acetylene) at a large space velocity of 9.6 × 104 ml gcat–1 h–1 and excellent long-term stability. Theoretical and operando electrochemical Raman investigations revealed that the outstanding electrocatalytic acetylene semihydrogenation performance of Cu catalysts originates from its exothermic acetylene adsorption and ethylene desorption. Meanwhile, the electrocatalytic semihydrogenation strategy is universally applicable for hydrogenating other alkyne impurities to produce polymer-grade olefins, for example, propylene and 1,3-butadiene.

Abstract:Hydrogen as the most promising alternative energy vector to fossil stands out due to its highly energy density and zero pollution. Extending the hydrogen feedstock from hydrocarbons (e.g., methane) to biomass derived oxygen‐containing compounds (CH3OH, C2H5OH etc.) provides the opportunity for low environmental pollution as well as a promising sustainable energy economy. Recently, ethanol with less toxic and high calorific value than traditional fossil energy (coal, oil and natural gas) has garnered significant attention for ethanol steam reforming (ESR) to produce hydrogen, a key component in fuel cell cogeneration system. This paper reviews recent advances on the catalyst developing strategies including structural constitution control, oxide supports modification, surface topography control and bimetallic interactions, and further discusses the catalytic mechanisms, anti‐carbon deposition and sintering resistance strategies on the ethanol steam reforming (ESR) processes. Finally, the challenges and possible strategies for the development of high‐performance catalysts in terms of fundamental research have been discussed.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of acetylene is an important process for both ethylene purification and ethylene production from acetylene in the industry. Herein, we proposed liquid phase acetylene hydrogenation for high feed concentrations of C2H2 2 H 2 (8 %) and CO (20 %), which is used to produce ethylene as a subsequent process of partial oxidation of natural gas. The experiments were carried out in a stirred tank reactor using N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent and PdAg/SiO2 2 as catalyst. The liquid phase process obtained a much higher selectivity to ethylene (92 %) with only 8 % selectivity to green oil (GO) and C4, 4 , compared to 71 % ethylene selectivity in gas phase hydrogenation. Furthermore, in the liquid phase ethylene selectivity increased with increasing acetylene conversion, especially in the conversion range of 80-100 %. We developed a model incorporating reaction kinetics, mass transfer and reactor model to predict the acetylene conversion and ethylene selectivity in liquid phase hydrogenation. The calculation results indicated that hydrogenation in the liquid phase operated at a lower acetylene concentration and a higher H2/C2H2 2 /C 2 H 2 ratio, especially under high acetylene conversions. This explains why the liquid phase hydrogenation of acetylene has a much higher selectivity to ethylene than the gas phase process.
