Abstract:AbstractIncorporating oxophilic metals into noble metal-based catalysts represents an emerging strategy to improve the catalytic performance of electrocatalysts in fuel cells. However, effects of the distance between the noble metal and oxophilic metal active sites on the catalytic performance have rarely been investigated. Herein, we report on ultrasmall (∼5 nm) Pd–Ni–P ternary nanoparticles for ethanol electrooxidation. The activity is improved up to 4.95 A per mgPd, which is 6.88 times higher than commercial Pd/C (0.72 A per mgPd), by shortening the distance between Pd and Ni active sites, achieved through shape transformation from Pd/Ni–P heterodimers into Pd–Ni–P nanoparticles and tuning the Ni/Pd atomic ratio to 1:1. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the improved activity and stability stems from the promoted production of free OH radicals (on Ni active sites) which facilitate the oxidative removal of carbonaceous poison and combination with CH3CO radicals on adjacent Pd active sites.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt)-based multi-metallic nanostructures show great promise as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cell cathodes. Herein, we report a simple, one-step surfactant-directed synthetic strategy to directly synthesize tri-metallic PtPdNi mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdNi MNs) in a high yield. The synthesis could be accomplished in aqueous solution at mild reaction temperature (40 degrees C) without needing any organic solvent, yielding well-dispersed PtPdNi MNs with uniform shape and narrow size distribution. Benefitting from their unique mesoporous and highly open structure and tri-metallic composition, the as-synthesized PtPdNi MNs demonstrate superior catalytic activity and stability for ORR in acidic solution in comparison with PtPdNi nanodendrites (PtPdNi NDs), PtPd MNs and commercial Pt/C catalyst. Abstract:Improving the complete ethanol electrooxidation on Pd-based catalysts in alkaline media has drawn widely attention due to the high mass energy density. However, the weak adsorption energy of CH 3 CO* on Pd restricts the C-C bond cleavage. Inspired by the molecular orbital theory, we proposed the d -state-editing strategy to construct more unoccupied d -states of Pd for the enhanced interaction with CH 3 CO* to break C-C bonds. As expected, the reduced number of e g electrons and more unoccupied d -states of Pd successfully formed on as-prepared porous RhAu-PdCu nanosheets (PNSs). Theoretical calculations show that the optimized d -states of RhAu-PdCu PNS can effectively improve the adsorption of CH 3 CO* and drastically reduce the energy barrier of C-C bond cleavage, thus boosting the complete oxidation of ethanol. The charge ratio of C 1 pathway on RhAu-PdCu PNSs is 51.5%, more than 2 times higher than that of Pd NSs. Our finding provides an innovative perspective for the design of highly-efficient noble-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The interfacial interaction including chemical bonding or electron transfer and even physisorption in composite electrocatalysts has a considerable effect on electrocatalytic oxidation reaction. Herein, we report a tremendously enhanced catalytic activity and excellent durability for the ethanol electro-oxidation reaction in NiMoO4-C-supported Pd composites (Pd/NiMoO4-C) compared to the commercial Pd/C (10%) catalyst. The X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements disclose that the strong electron transfer between NiMoO4 nanorods and Pd nanoparticles likely induces the formation of more electrochemical active centers and improves the adsorption-desorption capacity of reactants and corresponding intermediates. In addition, the Pd/NiMoO4-C composite exhibits superior specific activity for ethanol oxidation compared to the Pd/NiMoO4 catalyst with physically incorporated carbon black, which further reveals that the stronger anchoring effect between Pd and C and higher electrical conductivity in Pd/NiMoO4-C composites are also conducive to promote the ethanol oxidation reaction. These discoveries provide an effective and simple method for the design of advanced electrocatalysts and provide more insights into optimizing the electronic interaction between the catalyst and support in general.
