Abstract:Recently, there have been significant efforts to guide mechanical energy in structures by relying on a novel topological framework popularized by the discovery of topological insulators. Here, we propose a topological metamaterial system based on the design of the Stewart Platform, which can not only guide mechanical waves robustly in a desired path, but also can be tuned in situ to change this wave path at will. Without resorting to any active materials, the current system harnesses bistablilty in its unit cells, such that tuning can be performed simply by a dial-in action. Consequently, a topological transition mechanism inspired by the quantum valley Hall effect can be achieved. We show the possibility of tuning in a variety of topological and traditional waveguides in the same system, and numerically investigate key qualitative and quantitative differences between them. We observe that even though both types of waveguides can lead to significant wave transmission for a certain frequency range, topological waveguides are distinctive as they support robust, back scattering immune, one-way wave propagation.

Abstract:Recent advancements in topological metamaterials have unveiled fruitful physics and numerous applications. Whereas initial efforts focus on achieving topologically protected edge states through principles of structural symmetry, the burgeoning field now aspires to customize topological states, tailoring their emergence and frequency. Here, our study presents the realization of topological phase transitions utilizing compliant mechanisms on the facets of Miura-folded metamaterials. This approach induces two opposite topological phases, leading to topological states at the interface. Moreover, we exploit the unique folding behavior of Miura-folded metamaterials to tune the frequency of topological states and dynamically toggle their presence. Our research not only paves the way for inducing topological phase transitions in Miura-folded structures but also enables the on-demand control of topological states, with promising applications in wave manipulation and vibration isolation.

Abstract:Multi-stable mechanical structures find cutting-edge applications across various domains due to their reconfigurability, which offers innovative possibilities for engineering and technology advancements. This study explores the emergence of topological states in a one-dimensional chain-like multi-stable mechanical metamaterial composed of bistable units through a combination of mechanical and optical experiments. Drawing inspiration from the SSH (Su-Schrieffer-Heeger) model in condensed matter physics, we leverage the unique mechanical properties of the reconfigurable ligament-oscillator metamaterial to engineer a system with coexisting topological phases. Based on the one-dimensional periodic bistable chain, there is an exponential decay diffusion of elastic energy from both end boundaries towards the interior of the body. Experimental characterizations demonstrate the existence of stable topological phases within the reconfigurable multi-stable mechanical metamaterial. The findings underscore the potential of reconfigurable mechanical metamaterials as versatile platforms for flexibly exploring and manipulating topological phenomena, with applications ranging from impact resistance to energy harvesting and information processing.

Abstract:The paper presents a single-sided double-S left-handed metamaterial structure in the X-band. The left-handed property of the new metamaterial has been verified by numerical simulation and experiment. Experimental results show the existence of the negative refraction within the same frequency band as indicated by the simulation. The proposed structure makes it easy to fabricate and feasible to make controllable metamaterial by incorporating itself with controllable elements.

Abstract:Disclinations-topological defects ubiquitously existing in various materials-can reveal the intrinsic band topology of the hosting material through the bulk-disclination correspondence. In low-dimensional materials and nanostructure such as graphene and fullerenes, disclinations yield curved surfaces and emergent non-Euclidean geometries that are crucial in understanding the properties of these materials. However, the bulk-disclination correspondence has never been studied in non-Euclidean geometry, nor in systems with p-orbital physics. Here, by creating p-orbital topological acoustic metamaterials with disclination-induced conic and hyperbolic surfaces, we demonstrate the rich emergent bound states arising from the interplay among the real-space geometry, the bulk band topology, and the p-orbital physics. This phenomenon is confirmed by clear experimental evidence that is consistent with theory and simulations. Our experiment paves the way toward topological phenomena in non-Euclidean geometries and will stimulate interesting research on, e.g., topological phenomena for electrons in nanomaterials with curved surfaces.

Abstract:In this study, the one-dimensional (1D) metamaterial beam-foundation system is innovatively improved into a metamaterial beam-resonator-foundation system by inserting resonators into the elastic foundation for ultra-low frequency vibration attenuation and enhanced topological energy trapping. Abundant band gap characteristics are obtained including quasi-static band gap starting from 0 Hz, Bragg scattering band gaps (BSBGs), and local resonance band gaps (LRBGs). Five band folding points are obtained through the band folding mechanism which can be opened by tuning inner and outer resonance parameters. However, only three band folding induced band gaps support mode inversion and Zak phase transition, including one BSBG and two LRBGs. The topological inversion in LRBGs is rarely reported in the 1D mechanical system, which can induce topological locally resonant interface states. The underlying physical mechanism of the topological phase transition in LRBG is revealed, which results from the topological inversion band gap transition from an initial BSBG to a LRBG with resonance parameters changes. Different from conventional 1D topological metamaterials that merely utilize local resonance to lower the band frequency and achieve subwavelength topological states in BSBGs, the topological interface states in LRBGs can localize wave energy to fewer unit cells near the interface, exhibiting enhanced energy localization capacity. The topologically protected interface states are validated with defective cases, demonstrating the potential of topological metamaterials for robust energy harvesting. This study provides new insights into the topological theory of 1D mechanical systems and contributes to the development and implementation of multi-functional devices integrating vibration attenuation and energy trapping.

Abstract:Topological surface states are unique to topological materials and are immune to disturbances. In isostatic lattices, mechanical topological floppy modes exhibit softness depending on the polarization relative to the terminating surface. However, in three dimensions, the polarization of topological floppy modes is disrupted by the ubiquitous mechanical Weyl lines. Here, we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, the fully polarized topological mechanical phases free of Weyl lines. Floppy modes emerge exclusively on a particular surface of the three-dimensional isostatic structure, leading to the strongly asymmetric stiffness between opposing boundaries. Additionally, uniform soft strains can reversibly shift the lattice configuration to Weyl phases, switching the stiffness contrast to a trivially comparable level. Our work demonstrates the fully polarized topological mechanical phases in three dimensions, and paves the way towards engineering soft and adaptive metamaterials. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.133.106101 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Concepts from quantum topological states of matter have been extensively utilized in the past decade in creating mechanical metamaterials with topologically protected features, such as one-way edge states and topologically polarized elasticity. Maxwell lattices represent a class of topological mechanical metamaterials that exhibit distinct robust mechanical properties at edges/interfaces when they are topologically polarized. Realizing topological phase transitions in these materials would enable on-and-off switching of these edge states, opening unprecedented opportunities to program mechanical response and wave propagation. However, such transitions are extremely challenging to experimentally control in Maxwell topological metamaterials due to mechanical and geometric constraints. Here we create a Maxwell lattice with bistable units to implement synchronized transitions between topological states and demonstrate dramatically different stiffnesses as the lattice transforms between topological phases both theoretically and experimentally. By combining multistability with topological phase transitions, for the first time, this metamaterial not only exhibits topologically protected mechanical properties that swiftly and reversibly change, but also offers a rich design space for innovating mechanical computing architectures and reprogrammable neuromorphic metamaterials. Moreover, we design and fabricate a topological Maxwell lattice using multi-material 3D printing and demonstrate the potential for miniaturization via additive manufacturing. These design principles are applicable to transformable topological metamaterials for a variety of tasks such as switchable energy absorption, impact mitigation, wave tailoring, neuromorphic metamaterials, and controlled morphing systems.

Abstract:Topological elastic wave metamaterials have shown significant advantages in manipulating wave propagation and realizing localized modes. However, topological properties of most mechanical metamaterials are difficult to change because of structural limitations. This work proposes the elastic wave metamaterials with double coupled chains and active control, in which band inversion and topological interface modes can be achieved by flexibly tuning negative capacitance circuits. Finite element simulations and experiments are performed to demonstrate the topological interface modes, which show good agreements with the theoretical results. This research seeks to provide effective strategies for the design and application of topological elastic wave metamaterials.

Abstract:Topological metamaterials demonstrate unprecedented wave manipulation abilities with topologically protected robustness, which have been extensively investigated in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) mechanical systems, but less explored in three-dimensional (3D) systems. In this study, a 3D topological mechanical metamaterial with periodically stacked sandwich metamaterial plates is proposed to achieve 2D topological surface wave transport in a relatively low-frequency range. An innovative chiral compression-torsion coupling core is employed on the sandwich metamaterial plate to lower the band frequency. Analogous to the quantum valley Hall effect, the two-fold topological nodal line is lifted by breaking the spatial inversion symmetry, opening a topological band gap. By supercell analysis, the topological interface state is demonstrated to appear at the interface of two topologically different domains, and the topological boundary state can also be excited under appropriate free or fixed boundary conditions. Taking advantage of the 3D periodicity, the wave propagation based on both topological interface states and boundary states is examined in both 2D flat plates and 3D structures, realizing 1D topological waveguide and 2D topological surface wave transport respectively. It is found that mode symmetry matching is crucial for constructing the topological wave transport with both interface and boundary states. Leveraging the dependence of boundary states on boundary conditions, this work innovatively presents route-switchable and layer-selective wave manipulation by controlling boundary conditions without complicated structure design, enriching the strategies for tunable elastic wave manipulation. Besides, the topologically protected surface wave transport is demonstrated by introducing defects and disorders. These findings provide new insights into the topological transport of elastic waves in 3D mechanical metamaterials and contribute to the development of intelligent and robust devices for various purposes, such as vibration mitigation, energy harvesting, and signal sensing.

Abstract:This paper investigates the higher-order topological behavior of elastic wave metamaterials composed of L-shaped pillars attached to a plate. In this system, the multi-dimensional topological transitions can be developed for physical transfer among the corner, edge, and bulk elastic wave modes by tuning the rotation angle of the L-shaped pillars. Different from the four degenerate corner states in the symmorphic system, these corner states in this metamaterial evolve into two doublets because of the lack of mirror symmetries. With the energy highly trapped at the corners, it thus can immediately realize elastic resonators/sensors with high-quality factors. Besides, the coupling effect between corner and edge states is analyzed in the multi-dimensional topological system. The edge–corner coupling effect could be applied to relevant fields, such as high-sensitive detection, elastic energy harvesting, and optomechanical sensing.
