Abstract:A solid solution between polar perovskite oxides BiInO3 and BiZn1/2Ti1/2O3 with the atomic displacement of Bi3+ and B-site (In and Zn1/2Ti1/2) as the origin of spontaneous electric polarization was investigated. Polar orthorhombic to nonpolar orthorhombic transition accompanied by negative thermal expansion (NTE) with constant volume shrinkage was observed for <i>x</i> ≤ 0.3 in BiIn1–<i>x</i>Zn<i>x</i>/2Ti<i>x</i>/2O3. A relative shift of electrical polarization from A-site Bi3+ to B-site ions reduced the transition temperature and enabled NTE in a wide temperature range with suppressed temperature hysteresis. In addition, new LiNbO3-type phases were found for 0.4 ≤ <i>x</i> ≤ 0.8 with ferroelastic and piezoelectric behaviors, featuring a very high switching strain and demonstrating the potential for enhanced domain wall mobility. The Supporting Information is available free of charge at <a class="ext-link" href="/doi/10.1021/acs.chemmater.0c04049?goto=supporting-info">https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.chemmater.0c04049</a>.Select peaks of SXRD patterns for BiIn1–<i>x</i>Zn<i>x</i>/2Ti<i>x</i>/2O3 (<i>x</i> = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) depicting the phase transition; calculated <i>P</i>S of BiIn1–<i>x</i>Zn<i>x</i>/2Ti<i>x</i>/2O3 (0.4 ≤ <i>x</i> ≤ 0.8) by a point charge model; TEM image of BiIn0.5Zn0.25Ti0.25O3; structural parameters of BiIn1–<i>x</i>Znx/2Tix/2O3 at 300 and 800 K; and cluster size estimation performed by PDF analyses for BiIn0.2Zn0.4Ti0.4O3 (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acs.chemmater.0c04049/suppl_file/cm0c04049_si_001.pdf">PDF</a>)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
