Abstract:We present a novel investigation on the enhancement of phase noise in coherent optical transmission system due to electronic chromatic dispersion compensation. Two types of equalizers, including a time domain fiber dispersion finite impulse response (FD-FIR) filter and a frequency domain blind look-up (BLU) filter are applied to mitigate the chromatic dispersion in a 112-Gbit/s polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) transmission system. The bit-error-rate (BER) floor in phase estimation using an optimized one-tap normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) filter, and considering the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) is evaluated analytically including the correlation effects. The numerical simulations are implemented and compared with the performance of differential QPSK demodulation system.

Abstract:The study on carrier phase estimation (CPE) approaches, involving a one-tap normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) algorithm, a block-wise average algorithm, and a Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm has been carried out in the long-haul high-capacity dispersion-unmanaged coherent optical systems. The close-form expressions and analytical predictions for bit error-rate behaviors in these CPE methods have been analyzed by considering both the laser phase noise and the equalization enhanced phase noise. It is found that the Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm outperforms the one-tap NLMS and the block-wise average algorithms for a small phase noise variance (or effective phase noise variance), while the three CPE methods converge to a similar performance for a large phase noise variance (or effective phase noise variance). In addition, the differences between the three CPE approaches become smaller for higher-level modulation formats.

Abstract:The performance of long-haul coherent optical fiber transmission system is significantly affected by the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN), due to the interaction between the electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) and the laser phase noise. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on different chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation and carrier phase recovery (CPR) approaches, in the n-level phase shift keying (n-PSK) and the n-level quadrature amplitude modulation (n-QAM) coherent optical transmission systems, considering the impacts of EEPN. Four CD compensation methods are considered: the time-domain equalization (TDE), the frequency-domain equalization (FDE), the least mean square (LMS) adaptive equalization are applied for EDC, and the dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) is employed for optical dispersion compensation (ODC). Meanwhile, three carrier phase recovery methods are also involved: a one-tap normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm, a block-wise average (BWA) algorithm, and a Viterbi-Viterbi (VV) algorithm. Numerical simulations have been carried out in a 28-Gbaud dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) coherent transmission system, and the results indicate that the origin of EEPN depends on the choice of chromatic dispersion compensation methods, and the effects of EEPN also behave moderately different in accordance to different carrier phase recovery scenarios.

Abstract:In the coherent optical communication systems at 100 Gbit/s and higher rates using high-order phase modulation,laser phase noise and dispersion effects in fiber-optic transmissions are the major factors that affect the system performance.To compensate for these effects,this paper proposes a method for the combined use of electric channel equalization and carrier phase estimation modules in the electric domain.The phase estimation is completed after the electric channel equalization,the results of which are also used in updating the tap coefficients of the equalizer.This method can effectively reduce the requirements for the step-size in the equalization,conducive to acquiring lower bit error rate,more stable error performance and longer transmission distance.

Abstract:Employing spectrally efficient PolMux-RZ-8PSK modulation format and single-ended digital coherent detection technique, we demonstrate 8 times 114-Gb/s DWDM transmission over 640 km of SSMF on a 25-GHz grid with record spectral efficiency of 4.2 bit/s/Hz, utilizing no optical dispersion compensation or Raman amplification. We show that the distortion caused by the direct square-law detection of the signal component with single-ended photo detection can be effectively mitigated by a novel DSP algorithm.

Abstract:The generation of coherent and frequency-locked optical multi-carriers by using cascaded phase modulators and recirculating frequency shifter (RFS) based on an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) loop has been investigated theoretically and experimentally for a multi-terabit optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) superchannel transmission. The phase and amplitude relationship between RF driving signals of two cascaded phase modulators and the impact of EDFA gain are analyzed. Experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The 112 coherent and frequency-locked subcarriers obtained after tilt filtering exhibit a tone-to-noise ratio of larger than 26 dB, a power fluctuation of less than 5 dB, and a frequency spacing of 25 GHz giving a 22.6 nm-wide optical OFDM signal spectrum. By using this method, we have successfully generated a 10-Tbit/s (112 x 100 Gbit/s) single optical OFDM polarization-division-multiplexing QPSK (PDM-QPSK) superchannel with an optical signal to noise ratio per OFDM subchannel greater than 20 dB at 0.1 nm bandwidth, and it has been transmitted over a 640-km SMF-28 and EDFA-only link with BER less than 2 x 10(-3).

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate coherent 112 optical sub-carriers with subcarrier spacing of 25 GHz is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By using these coherent optical subcarriers, we have successfully generated 10-Tbit/s (112×100 Gbit/s) single channel optical OFDM polarization multiplexing QPSK signal with the bandwidth of 2.8 THz and the optical signal noise ratio greater than 20 dB (0.1nm bandwidth for each subchannel). We have transmitted the 11.2-Tbit/s optical OFDM signal over 640-km SMF-28 with an amplifier span of 80 km and EDFA-only.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the phase noise elimination employing an optical pilot carrier in the high speed coherent transmission system considering the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN). The numerical simulations are performed in a 28-Gsymbol/s quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) coherent system with a polarization multiplexed pilot carrier. The carrier phase estimation is implemented by the one-tap normalized least mean square (NLMS) filter and the differential phase detection, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the application of the optical pilot carrier is very effective for the intrinsic laser phase noise cancellation, while is less efficient for the EEPN mitigation.

Abstract:We demonstrate a spectrally efficient digital subcarrier multiplexed (DSCM) coherent optical system for optical transport network. In the proposed system, mutually orthogonal subcarrier channels are digitally generated, which allows a high degree of flexibility in bandwidth allocation and scalability in data rate granularity. The receiver can also dynamically change the number of DSCM channels for detection without changing the system configuration. We experimentally investigate the transmission performance of a 22.2 Gb/s DSCM system with 10 subcarrier channels using QPSK modulation. The impacts of channel spacing and time mismatch between subcarrier channels are also explored.

Abstract:We present a study of the influence of dispersion induced phase noise for CO-OFDM systems using FFT multiplexing/IFFT demultiplexing techniques (software based). The software based system provides a method for a rigorous evaluation of the phase noise variance caused by Common Phase Error (CPE) and Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) including - for the first time to our knowledge - in explicit form the effect of equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN). This, in turns, leads to an analytic BER specification. Numerical results focus on a CO-OFDM system with 10-25 GS/s QPSK channel modulation. A worst case constellation configuration is identified for the phase noise influence and the resulting BER is compared to the BER of a conventional single channel QPSK system with the same capacity as the CO-OFDM implementation. Results are evaluated as a function of transmission distance. For both types of systems, the phase noise variance increases significantly with increasing transmission distance. For a total capacity of 400 (1000) Gbit/s, the transmission distance to have the BER < 10^-2 for the worst case CO-OFDM design is less than 800 and 460 km, respectively, whereas for a single channel QPSK system it is less than 1400 and 560 km.
