Abstract:We demonstrate a refractive index (RI) sensor based on semiconductor nanowire lasers. It is shown that the TE01 mode is responsible for lasing and sensing with the lasing threshold of 3 μJ/mm2 and the lasing peak width as narrow as 0.22 nm. A RI sensitivity of 21.2 nm/RIU (refractive index units), a figure of merit of approximately 100, and an RI detection limit of 1.4×10−3 RIU are achieved.

We calculate the device sensitivity and find its dependence on the nanowire diameter and coating thickness. A sensitivity as high as 700 nm/RIU and a refractive index resolution as low as 10(-10) are predicted.

Abstract:In this paper, a new refractive index sensor based on Fano resonance is introduced. It is mainly composed of two parts: a metal–insulator–metal as a base waveguide and an annular resonant cavity with a double notch and a double convex circle as a coupling structure. The sensing characteristics of the design are investigated via finite element calculations. The influence of the remaining structure parameters on the system’s sensing performance and the relationship between the wavelength corresponding to the Fano trough and the refractive index are also investigated. Furthermore, the structure is applied to refractive index sensors, resulting in a type with a sensitivity of 2740 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 52.69.

Abstract:A considerable fraction of the fundamental mode can propagate outside the fibre physical boundary if the optical fibre has a micrometric or sub-micrometric diameter. In these conditions, high-Q resonators can be promptly achieved with simple coils. Devices based on coiled microfibres have a resonating wavelength strongly dependent on the surrounding media, hence they can be used as an extremely sensitive refractive index sensors. In free space, these devices suffer from reliability problems connected to stability and degradation; embedding in low refractive index polymers has solved this issue providing the stability requirements that a sensor needs. can be achieved for both resonating configurations. The use of a small size microfibers and/or thin layer of embedding material d improves considerably S in both CANMR and ENLR. CANMR has also a microfluidic channel which can be easily integrated in a more complex biosystem.

Abstract:Optical refractive index (RI) sensors, with the advantages of fast response, resistance to electromagnetic interference, and more options for signal collection, are widely used in biological fields. Compared with the metallic nano particle RI sensors based on localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR), nonmetallic nanomaterial RI sensors based on leaky resonant scattering have the advantages of high sensitivity, large sensing volume, good reliability, and more suitability for biosensing. However, so far studies on nonmetallic nanomaterial RI sensors are less reported. In this work, we study semiconductor nanowire (NW) RI sensors using a CdSe nanowire as an example. The NW diameter and substrate effects on the sensitivity of the RI sensors are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The bulk wavelength sensitivity of a suspended NW can be as high as 235 nm/RIU (per refractive index unit), and the highest figure of merit is 4.6. The larger decay length (similar to 100 nm) of the NW sensor enables greater sensing volume compared with a localized SPR sensor. Besides, we demonstrate that, by choosing proper diameter, we can tune the scattering efficiency peak into the optimum spectral region (600-900 nm) for biosensing. We also demonstrate that the semiconductor NW RI sensors have good reproducibility and reliability. Our work predicts that the semiconductor NW RI sensors have promising applications in diverse sensing devices, especially in biosensing.

Abstract:Optical sensors have a series of advantages, such as anti-interference, fast response, low power consumption, etc. Due to the diffraction limit, optical devices cannot be integrated on a large scale. spp can break through the limitations of traditional optical diffraction limits and manipulate light in the sub-wavelength range. Greatly advance the integration of optical devices. In this paper, a novel nano-sensor structure is proposed, which consists of an MIM waveguide with double rectangles and an annular cavity with embedded stubs. The sensing characteristics are simulated and analyzed by finite element method. In addition, we also analyze the triggers of the Fano resonance line and optimize it by adjusting the parameters. The maximum sensitivity is 1990 nm / RIU, and the advantage value is 63.2. This structure has broad application prospects in sensors in biomedicine and temperature detection.

Abstract:This paper reports the design and analysis of a liquid refractive index (RI) fiber sensor based on resonant optical tunneling effect (ROTE). The device utilizes an optical cavity formed between two angled silver-coated optical fibers to detect the RI changes by measuring the intensity variation of transmission intensity or the wavelength shift of transmission peak. The simulation results show that the intensity-based method could reach a sensitivity of 10−7 RIU (refractive index unit) and the spectrum-based method promises a sensitivity of 81,000 nm/RIU, which are much larger than those of Fabry–Pérot etalons and surface plasmon resonance sensors. With ultrahigh sensitivity, pico-litre sample volume and fiber integration, this sensor may find potential applications in biochemical analysis.

Abstract:A liquid refractive index sensor is designed and optimized by using silicon-rods based on a 10-fold photonic quasicrystal without defects. The resonant mode with high Q value is chosen as the sensing wavelength in the transmission spectrum. By changing the radius of the silicon pillars, the sensor size and the refractive index of the background media, different types of sensors are designed and investigated. On the other hand, the performance of the sensor is investigated including the measurement range, sensitivity, etc. In the detection limit of spectral instruments, 0.02 nm, the sensing accuracy is 10(-4) refractive index unit with a figure of merit of 1478. The measurement range is from 1.2731 to 1.4185. This will provide a new method for the design and fabrication of lab-on-chip, microfluidic optical elements and integrated optical circuits.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel nano-sized refractive index sensor based on the Fano resonance phenomenon. The main structure consists of two short tubes of the metal-insulation-metal waveguide and an internal Z-ring resonator. The authors used a finite element approach to analyze the nanoscale sensing performance of the system. Simulation results show that asymmetries in the geometry will lead to Fano resonance splitting. This paper explicitly explores whether the structure’s top and bottom asymmetry is a significant factor in the Fano resonance of the internal Z-ring resonator structure. After Fano resonance splitting, the obtained transmission curve was sharper, the bandwidth was significantly reduced, and the system’s figure of merit was significantly improved. This paper further extends the internal Z-ring resonator structure to the sensor field. The resulting refractive index sensor has a sensitivity of 2234 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 49.65.

Abstract:This study proposes a Brillouin refractive index sensor based on the evanescent field effect of a micro-nano fiber. Multipeak Brillouin spectrum caused by hybrid acoustic field of the fiber is used for liquid refractive index sensing. Experimental results show that, for a 2 mu m-micro-nano fiber, Brillouin peaks at approximately 10.4 GHz have a relatively high signal-to-noise ratio in NaCl solution, and their frequency shifts have a linear dependence on the liquid refractive index. A refractive index sensing sensitivity of 369. 6 MHz/RIU (RIU is refractivity unit) is obtained within the range of 1.3333-1.3612. The proposed sensor will provide a new alternative for refractive index sensing.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and analysis of a liquid refractive index sensor that utilizes a unique physical mechanism of resonant optical tunneling effect (ROTE). The sensor consists of two hemicylindrical prisms, two air gaps, and a microfluidic channel. All parts can be microfabricated using an optical resin NOA81. Theoretical study shows that this ROTE sensor has extremely sharp transmission peak and achieves a sensitivity of 760 nm/refractive index unit (RIU) and a detectivity of 85 000 RIU-1. Although the sensitivity is smaller than that of a typical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor (3200 nm/RIU) and is comparable to a 95% reflectivity Fabry-Perot (FP) etalon (440 nm/RIU), the detectivity is 17 000 times larger than that of the SPR sensor and 85 times larger than that of the FP etalon. Such ROTE sensor could potentially achieve an ultrahigh sensitivity of 10(-9) RIU, two orders higher than the best results of current methods. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:Sensitivities (S) and quality factors (Q) have been trade-offs in optical resonator sensors, and optimal geometry that maximizes both factors is under active development. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate an optical sensor based on photonic crystal (PhC) nanoslotted parallel quadrabeam integrated cavity (NPQIC) with high figure of merit (FOM). Both high sensitivity (S) of 451nm/RIU (refractive index unit) and Q-factor >7000 in water at telecom wavelength range have been achieved simultaneously, which features a sensor figure of merit (FOM) >2000, an order of magnitude improvement over previous photonic crystal sensors.

Abstract:We design and demonstrate a suspended high sensitivity silicon nitride (Si3N4) photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavity sensor. By utilizing the higher order mode, the optical field distribution in the analytes increases dramatically and the light matter interaction between the optical mode and the analytes has been enhanced. A high sensitivity of 321 nm/refractive index unit (nm/RIU) has been experimentally achieved at the wavelength ~700 nm which is the highest value reported so far for a resonator based sensor at such a short wavelength.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a Fano-resonance-based refractive index sensor with ultra-high sensitivity. The sensor comprises a metal–insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with two rectangular stubs coupled with a circular resonator embedded with a defective metal nanocube (CRMN). The transmission characteristics of the structure are simulated using the 2D finite element method. This analysis reveals that the Fano resonance mode splitting is affected by the geometry of the sensor. In addition, the modulation depth and position of the Fano resonance can be tuned by adjusting the width and length of the stub on the CRMN. Optimizing the structural parameters results in a peak sensing sensitivity of 10200 nm∙RIU−1 under the ultra-compact sensor size. This sensitivity allows the sensor to be used in the detection of hemoglobin concentration (HC). By processing simulation data, the linear relationship between the refractive index of three different blood groups (A, B, and O) and HC is obtained. Based on the sensing principle of the designed device, HC can be calculated from measuring the shift of the Fano resonance wavelength. These results provide critical developments for the application of nanoscale refractive index sensors in the biomedical field.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate a novel method to manufacture gratings in optical fiber microwires and discuss their application to sensing. Gratings can be manufactured by wrapping an optical fiber microwire on a microstructured rod. This method avoids post-processing the thin optical fiber microwire and it has great flexibility: chirping can be realized by designing the air hole size and position in the microstructured rod. By exploiting the large evanescent field in an inner channel, microfluidic refractometric sensors with sensitivity > 10(3) nm/RIU can be achieved.
