Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group. A zero-sum problem on G asks for the smallest positive integer k such that for any sequence a1,... ,ak of elements of G there exists a subsequence of required length the sum of whose terms vanishes. In this talk we will give a survey of problems and results in this field. In particular, we will talk about Olson's theorem on the Davenport constanst of an abelian p-group, Reiher's celebrated proof of the Kemnitz conjecture, and the speaker's extension of the Erd˝os-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem involving covers of Z.

Abstract:Zero-sum problems on abelian groups, subset sums in a field and covers of the integers by residue classes, are three different active topics initiated by P. Erdýos more than 40 years ago and investigated by many researchers separately since then. In an earlier announcement (Electron. Res. Announc. Amer. Math. Soc. 9(2003), 51-60), the author claimed some connections among these seemingly unrelated fas- cinating areas. In this paper we establish the surprising connections for the first time and present a further unified approach. For example, we extend the famous Erdýos-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem in the following way: If {as(mod ns)} k=1 covers each integer either exactly 2q −1 times or exactly 2q times where q is a prime power, then for any c1, . . . , ck ∈ Z/qZ there exists an I ⊆ {1, . . . , k} such that P s2I 1/ns = q and P s2I cs = 0. Our main theorems in this paper unify many results in the three realms and also have applications in finite fields and graph theory.

Abstract:Zero-sum problems for abelian groups and covers of the integers by residue classes, are two different active topics initiated by P. Erdős more than 40 years ago and investigated by many researchers separately since then. In an earlier announcement [S03b], the author claimed some surprising connections among these seemingly unrelated fascinating areas. In this paper we establish further connections between zero-sum problems for abelian p-groups and covers of the integers. For example, we extend the famous Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem in the following way: If { a s (mod ns)} s=1 k covers each integer either exactly 2q − 1 times or exactly 2q times where q is a prime power, then for any c 1,...,c k ∈ ℤ/qℤ there exists an I ⊆ {1,...,k} such that ∑ s∈I 1/n s = q and ∑ s∈I c s = 0. The main theorem of this paper unifies many results in the two realms and also implies an extension of the Alon-Friedland-Kalai result on regular subgraphs.

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group. The zero-sum problem for G asks for the least positive integer k such that for any a1, · · · , ak ∈ G there is an I ⊆ {1, · · · , k} of required cardinality satisfying ∑ i∈I ai = 0. In this talk we will introduce the famous theorem of P. Erdős, A. Ginzburg and A. Ziv (for G = Zn), and recent results of L. Rónya on the Kemnitz conjecture concerning the group Zn ⊕Zn, where Zn = Z/nZ is the additive cyclic group of residue classes modulo n. 1. The Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Theorem In 1961 P. Erdős, A. Ginzburg and A. Ziv [Bull. Research Council Israel, 10(1961)] established the following celebrated theorem. EGZ Theorem. Let n be any positive integer, and S = {ai} i=1 be a sequence of integers. Then there is an I ⊆ {1, · · · , 2n − 1} with |I| = n such that ∑ i∈I ai ≡ 0 (mod n). This can be viewed as the first nontrivial result on zero-sum problems. Let G be a finite additive abelian group. On Snevily's conjecture and restricted sumsets

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A1,…,An(n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b1,…,bn be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m⩽(k−1)/(n−1) there are more than (k−1)n−(m+1)(n2) sets {a1,…,an} such that a1∈A1,…,an∈An, and both ai≠aj and mai+bi≠maj+bj (or both mai≠maj and ai+bi≠aj+bj) for all 1⩽i<j⩽n. This extends a recent result of Dasgupta, Károlyi, Serra and Szegedy on Snevily's conjecture. Actually stronger results on sumsets with polynomial restrictions are obtained in this paper.
Disjoint zero-sum subsets in Abelian groups and its application -- survey

Abstract:We provide a summary of research on disjoint zero-sum subsets in finite Abelian groups, which is a branch of additive group theory and combinatorial number theory. An orthomorphism of a group $\Gamma$ is defined as a bijection $\varphi$ $\Gamma$ such that the mapping $g \mapsto g^{-1}\varphi(g)$ is also bijective. In 1981, Friedlander, Gordon, and Tannenbaum conjectured that when $\Gamma$ is Abelian, for any $k \geq 2$ dividing $|\Gamma| -1$, there exists an orthomorphism of $\Gamma$ fixing the identity and permuting the remaining elements as products of disjoint $k$-cycles. Using the idea of disjoint-zero sum subset we provide a solution of this conjecture for $k=3$ and $|\Gamma|\cong 4\pmod{24}$. We also present some applications of zero-sum sets in graph labeling.

Abstract:The distribution of cardinalities of zero-sum sets in abelian groups is completely determined. A complex summation involving the Möbius function is given for the general abelian group, while in many special cases, including the case of elementary abelian groups, solved earlier by Li and Wan, it has a compact form. The proof involves two different Möbius transforms, on positive integers and on set partitions.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abeilian group. A sequence $S$ with terms from $G$ is zero-sum if the sum of terms in $S$ equals zero. It is a minimal zero-sum sequence if no proper, nontrivial subsequence is zero-sum. The maximal length of a minimal zero-sum subsequence in $G$ is the Davenport constant, denoted $D(G)$. For a rank 2 group $G=C_n \oplus C_n$, it is known that $D(G)=2n-1$. However, the structure of all maximal length minimal zero-sum sequences remains open. If every such sequence contains a term with multiplicity $n-1$, then $C_n \oplus C_n$ is said to have Property B, and it is conjectured that this is true for all rank 2 groups $C_n \oplus C_n$. In this paper, we show that Property B is multiplicative, namely, if $G=C_n \oplus C_n$ and $G=C_m \oplus C_m$ both satisfy Property B, with $m, n\geq 3$ odd and $mn>9$, then $C_{mn}\oplus C_{mn}$ satisfies Property B also. Combined with previous work in the literature, this reduces the question of establishing Property B to the prime cases, and in such case the complete structural description of the sequence follows.

Abstract:Non-interactive zero-knowledge (NIZK) proof systems are very useful for statement verification without interaction in cryptography; they entail just one message, called the proof, that convinces the verifier of the truth of the statement without leaking any extra information. Many NIZK proof systems are related to quadratic residuosity languages and follow three main steps. First, the prover and the verifier sample a common reference string (CRS) in some particular form. Second, the prover proves that n is a Blum integer (BL , n = p 1 t 1 · p 2 t 2, where p 1 and p 2 are different primes both congruent to 3 modulo 4, and t 1 and t 2 are odd). Third, various statements (e.g., NQR n , OR n , AND n , T ( k , t ), and 3 SAT) can be proven by the prover based on the properties of BL . In this study, we improve the NIZK proof system for n ∈ BL based on the special distribution of the square roots modulo n and embed this proof in the third step. Moreover, we show that the CRS can be sampled more efficiently using the improved process.
The zero divisor conjecture and Mealy automata

Abstract:The zero divisor conjecture is sufficient to prove for certain class of finitely presented groups where the relations are given by a pairing of generators. We associate Mealy automata to such pairings, and prove that the zero divisor conjecture holds for groups corresponding to invertible automata with three states. In particular, there cannot be zero divisors of support three corresponding to invertible pairings.

Abstract:The purpose of the article is to provide an unified way to formulate zero-sum invariants. Let $G$ be a finite additive abelian group. Let $B(G)$ denote the set consisting of all nonempty zero-sum sequences over G. For $\Omega \subset B(G$), let $d_{\Omega}(G)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $|S|\geq t$ has a subsequence in $\Omega$.We provide some first results and open problems on $d_{\Omega}(G)$.

Precise Zero-Knowledge in Concurrent Setting

Abstract:We present a stronger notion of zero-knowledge: precise concurrent zero-knowledge. Our notion captures the idea that the view of any verifier in concurrent interaction can be reconstructed in the almost same time (within a constant/polynomial factor). Precise zero-knowledge in stand-alone setting was introduced by Micali and Pass in STOC’06 (The original work used the term ”local zero-knowledge”.). Their notion shows that the view of any verifier can be reconstructed in the almost same time in stand-alone setting. Hence our notion is the generalization of their notion in concurrent setting. Furthermore, we propose a ω(log n)-round concurrent zero-knowledge argument for NP with linear precision, which shows that the view of any verifier in concurrent interaction can be reconstructed by the simulator with linear-time overhead. Our argument is Feige-Lapidot-Shamir type which consists of a proof-preamble and a proof-body for a modified NP statement. Our result assumes the restriction of adversarial scheduling the communication that the concurrent interaction of preambles of all sessions will be scheduled before any proof-body by the adversarial verifier.
