Abstract: Let $A_1,\ldots,A_n$ be finite subsets of an additive abelian group $G$ with $|A_1|=\cdots=|A_n|\ge2$. Concerning the two new kinds of restricted sumsets $$L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_1\in A_1,\ldots,a_n\in A_n,\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n\}$$ and $$C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_i\in A_i\ (1\le i\le n),\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n,\ \text{and}\ a_n\not=a_1\}$$ recently introduced by the second author, when $G$ is the additive group of a field we obtain lower bounds for $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ and $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ via the polynomial method. Moreover, when $G$ is torsion-free and $A_1=\cdots=A_n$, we determine completely when $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ or $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ attains its lower bound.
Restricted sumsets in multiplicative subgroups

Abstract:We establish the restricted sumset analogue of the celebrated conjecture of Sárközy on additive decompositions of the set of nonzero squares over a finite field. More precisely, we show that if $q>13$ is an odd prime power, then the set of nonzero squares in $\mathbb{F}_q$ cannot be written as a restricted sumset $A \hat{+} A$, extending a result of Shkredov. More generally, we study restricted sumsets in multiplicative subgroups over finite fields as well as restricted sumsets in perfect powers (over integers) motivated by a question of Erdős and Moser. We also prove an analogue of van Lint-MacWilliams' conjecture for restricted sumsets, which appears to be the first analogue of Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem in a family of Cayley sum graphs.

Abstract:Let G be any additive abelian group with cyclic torsion subgroup, and let A, B and C be finite subsets of G with cardinality n > 0. We show that there is a numbering {a(i)}(n)(i=1)of the elements of A, a numbering {b(i)}(n)(i=1) of the elements of B and a numbering {c(i)}(n)(i=1) of the elements of C, such that all the sums a(i) + b(i) + c(i) (1 <= i <= n) are (pairwise) distinct. Consequently, each subcube of the Latin cube formed by the Cayley addition table of Z/NZ contains a Latin transversal. This additive theorem is an essential result which can be further extended via restricted sumsets in a field.

Suppose that the restricted sumsetC={α+b: α ∈A, b ∈B, and α − b ∉S} is nonempty and somec∈C can be written asa+b witha∈A andb∈B in at mostm ways. We show that ifG is torsion-free or elementary abelian, then |C|≥|A|+|B|−|S|−m. We also prove that |C|≥|A|+|B|−2|S|−m if the torsion subgroup ofG is cyclic. In the caseS={0} this provides an advance on a conjecture of Lev.

Abstract:Let $k\geqslant 3$ and let $A=\{0=a_{0}<a_{1}<\cdots<a_{k-1}\}$ with $\gcd(A)=1$. Freiman-Lev conjecture [V.F. Lev, Restricted set addition in groups, I. The classical setting, J. London Math. Soc. 62(2000), 27-40] is a well-known conjecture which related to restricted sumsets. Up to now, Freiman-Lev conjecture is open for all $a_{k-1}\geqslant 2k-2$. In this paper, we prove the Freiman-Lev conjecture is true for $a_{k-1}\geqslant 2k-2$ and $a_{k-2}<2k-4$. That is, Freiman-Lev conjecture is still open for the case $a_{k-1}\geqslant 2k-2$ and $a_{k-2}\geq 2k-4$.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate some new problems in additive combinatorics.Our problems mainly involve permutations (or circular permutations) n distinct numbers (or elements of an additive abelian group) a1,…,an with adjacent sums ai + ai+1 (or differences ai-ai+1) pairwise distinct.For an odd prime power q =2n + 1 ＞ 13 with q ≠ 25,we show that there is a circular permutation (a1,…,an) of the elements of S={a2 : a∈(F)q\{0}} such that {a1+a2,…,an-1+an,an+a1} =S,where (F)q denotes the field of order q.For any finite subset A of an additive torsion-free abelian group G with |A| =n ＞ 3,we prove that there is a numbering a1,…,an of the elements of A such that a1 + 2a2,a2 + 2a3,…,an-1 + 2an,an + 2a1 are pairwise distinct.We also pose 30 open conjectures for further research.

Abstract:Suppose that $k\geq 2$ and $A$ is a non-empty subset of a finite abelian group $G$ with $|G|>1$. Then the cardinality of the restricted sumset $$ k^\wedge A:=\{a_1+\cdots+a_k:\,a_1,\ldots,a_k\in A,\ a_i\neq a_j\text{ for }i\neq j\} $$ is at least $$ \min\{p(G), k|A|-k^2+1\}, $$ where $p(G)$ denotes the least prime divisor of $|G|$.

Abstract:The famous Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture plays an important role in the development of additive combinatorial number theory. In 2007 Z.W. Sun made the following further conjecture (which is the linear extension of the Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture): For any finite subset A of a field F and nonzero elements a1,…,an of F, we have|{a1x1+⋯+anxn:x1,…,xn∈A,andxi≠xjifi≠j}|⩾min{p(F)−δ,n(|A|−n)+1}, where the additive order p(F) of the multiplicative identity of F is different from n+1, and δ∈{0,1} takes the value 1 if and only if n=2 and a1+a2=0. In this paper we prove this conjecture of Sun when p(F)⩾n(3n−5)/2. We also obtain a sharp lower bound for the cardinality of the restricted sumset{x1+⋯+xn:x1∈A1,…,xn∈An,andP(x1,…,xn)≠0}, where A1,…,An are finite subsets of a field F and P(x1,…,xn) is a general polynomial over F.

Abstract:Let Zp = Z/pZ stand for the field of all residue classes modulo prime p. In 1964 P. Erdös and H. Heilbronn (cf. [EH] and [Gu]) conjectured that for each nonempty subset A of Zp there are at least min{p, 2|A| − 3} residue classes modulo p that can be written as the sum of two distinct elements of A. This had been open for thirty years until J. A. Dias da Silva and Y. O. Hamidoune ([DH]) proved the following result with the help of the representation theory of symmetric groups.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group. A zero-sum problem on G asks for the smallest positive integer k such that for any sequence a1,... ,ak of elements of G there exists a subsequence of required length the sum of whose terms vanishes. In this talk we will give a survey of problems and results in this field. In particular, we will talk about Olson's theorem on the Davenport constanst of an abelian p-group, Reiher's celebrated proof of the Kemnitz conjecture, and the speaker's extension of the Erd˝os-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem involving covers of Z.
On universal sets and sumsets

Abstract:We study the concept of universal sets from the additive--combinatorial point of view. Among other results we obtain some applications of this type of uniformity to sets avoiding solutions to linear equations, and get an optimal upper bound for the covering number of general sumsets.

Abstract:We provide a summary of research on disjoint zero-sum subsets in finite Abelian groups, which is a branch of additive group theory and combinatorial number theory. An orthomorphism of a group $\Gamma$ is defined as a bijection $\varphi$ $\Gamma$ such that the mapping $g \mapsto g^{-1}\varphi(g)$ is also bijective. In 1981, Friedlander, Gordon, and Tannenbaum conjectured that when $\Gamma$ is Abelian, for any $k \geq 2$ dividing $|\Gamma| -1$, there exists an orthomorphism of $\Gamma$ fixing the identity and permuting the remaining elements as products of disjoint $k$-cycles. Using the idea of disjoint-zero sum subset we provide a solution of this conjecture for $k=3$ and $|\Gamma|\cong 4\pmod{24}$. We also present some applications of zero-sum sets in graph labeling.

Abstract:In combinatorial number theory, zero-sum problems, subset sums and covers of the integers are three dierent topics initiated by P. Erdos and investigated by many researchers; they play important roles in both number theory and combinatorics. In this paper we announce some deep connections among these seemingly unrelated fascinating areas, and aim at establishing a unied theory! On Snevily's conjecture and restricted sumsets

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A1,…,An(n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b1,…,bn be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m⩽(k−1)/(n−1) there are more than (k−1)n−(m+1)(n2) sets {a1,…,an} such that a1∈A1,…,an∈An, and both ai≠aj and mai+bi≠maj+bj (or both mai≠maj and ai+bi≠aj+bj) for all 1⩽i<j⩽n. This extends a recent result of Dasgupta, Károlyi, Serra and Szegedy on Snevily's conjecture. Actually stronger results on sumsets with polynomial restrictions are obtained in this paper.
On the number of sets with small sumset

Abstract:We investigate subsets with small sumset in arbitrary abelian groups. For an abelian group $G$ and an $n$-element subset $Y \subseteq G$ we show that if $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, then the number of subsets $A \subseteq Y$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$ is at most \[2^{o(s)}\binom{\frac{m+\beta}{2}}{s},\] where $\beta$ is the size of the largest subgroup of $G$ of size at most $\left(1+o(1)\right)m$. This bound is sharp for $\mathbb{Z}$ and many other groups. Our result improves the one of Campos and nearly bridges the remaining gap in a conjecture of Alon, Balogh, Morris, and Samotij. We also explore the behaviour of uniformly chosen random sets $A \subseteq \{1,\ldots,n\}$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$. Under the same assumption that $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, we show that with high probability there exists an arithmetic progression $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ of size at most $m/2 + o(m)$ containing all but $o(s)$ elements of $A$. Analogous results are obtained for asymmetric sumsets, improving results by Campos, Coulson, Serra, and Wötzel. The main tool behind our proofs is a graph container theorem combined with a variant of an asymmetric hypergraph container theorem.

Abstract:The distribution of cardinalities of zero-sum sets in abelian groups is completely determined. A complex summation involving the Möbius function is given for the general abelian group, while in many special cases, including the case of elementary abelian groups, solved earlier by Li and Wan, it has a compact form. The proof involves two different Möbius transforms, on positive integers and on set partitions.

Abstract:Zero-sum problems for abelian groups and covers of the integers by residue classes, are two different active topics initiated by P. Erdős more than 40 years ago and investigated by many researchers separately since then. In an earlier announcement [S03b], the author claimed some surprising connections among these seemingly unrelated fascinating areas. In this paper we establish further connections between zero-sum problems for abelian p-groups and covers of the integers. For example, we extend the famous Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem in the following way: If { a s (mod ns)} s=1 k covers each integer either exactly 2q − 1 times or exactly 2q times where q is a prime power, then for any c 1,...,c k ∈ ℤ/qℤ there exists an I ⊆ {1,...,k} such that ∑ s∈I 1/n s = q and ∑ s∈I c s = 0. The main theorem of this paper unifies many results in the two realms and also implies an extension of the Alon-Friedland-Kalai result on regular subgraphs.
