Abstract:We describe the temporal evolution and spatial structure of extreme African dust outbreaks and their associated meteorological fields over West Africa and the tropical Atlantic using A‐Train data and a global reanalysis product. We used Aqua–Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer daily aerosol optical depth (AOD) to identify major dust outbreaks, defined as AOD events one standard deviation above the background along the African coast. Dry air outbreaks were defined using water vapor data of the Aqua Atmospheric Infrared Sounder. Dry air outbreaks do not always coincide with dust outbreaks. Most boreal summer outbreaks reached the West Indies between 10°N and 20°N, some traveling on to the southeastern United States; winter outbreaks moved to South America between 0° and 10°N. Outbreaks travel westward at an average speed of 1000 km d−1, reaching the Caribbean or South America in a week's time. The advance of a dust front is associated with decreases in water vapor (up to −1.0 g kg−1) and increases in temperature (up to 1.0 K) and, behind the fronts, an anticyclonic circulation. We used Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) data to characterize dust altitude distributions. The vertical distribution of warm dry air is similar to that of dust observed in CALIPSO. The dust layer altitude decreases during transport across the Atlantic and is significantly lower in boreal winter than summer. The study highlights the temporal and spatial variability of African dust outbreaks, which are important to improving our understanding of climate impacts of African dust and Atlantic climate variability in general.
Dust Transport from North Africa to the Middle East: Synoptic Patterns and Numerical Forecast

Abstract:Every year, large quantities of dust are transported from North Africa to the Americas, Europe, and West Asia. The purpose of this study is to analyze four intense and pervasive dust storms that entered the Middle East from Northern Africa. Satellite products, ground-based remote sensing measurements, reanalysis data, and the outputs of the Aire Limitée Adaptation dynamique Développement InterNational-Dust (ALADIN-Dust) and the ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic weather and climate model with Aerosols and Reactive Trace gases (ICON-ART) forecasting models were synergized. The dust storms originated from different source regions located in the north, northeastern, and central parts of the Sahara Desert. The transport height of the main dust plumes was about 3–5 km, triggered by the westerly zonal winds. The presence of a closed low over the Eastern Mediterranean and the penetration of a deep trough into North Africa at 500 hPa were the main synoptic circulation patterns favoring long-range dust transport during the four dust events. A comparison of aerosol optical depth (AOD) outputs from the two models with satellite data revealed that although both models forecasted dust transport from Africa to the Middle East, they considerably underestimated the AOD values, especially near the dust sources. The ICON-ART model performed slightly better than ALADIN in forecasting these dust storms, and for longer forecasting leading time, although the performance of both models decreased, the superiority of the ICON-ART model became more apparent.

Abstract:Mass deposition fluxes of mineral dust to the tropical northeast Atlantic Ocean were determined within this study. In the framework of SOPRAN (Surface Ocean Processes in the Anthropocene), the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean in terms of material exchange were investigated at the Cape Verde atmospheric observatory (CVAO) on the island Sao Vicente for January 2009. Five different methods were applied to estimate the deposition flux, using different meteorological and physical measurements, remote sensing, and regional dust transport simulations. The set of observations comprises micrometeorological measurements with an ultra-sonic anemometer and profile measurements using 2-D anemometers at two different heights, and microphysical measurements of the size-resolved mass concentrations of mineral dust. In addition, the total mass concentration of mineral dust was derived from absorption photometer observations and passive sampling. The regional dust model COSMO-MUSCAT was used for simulations of dust emission and transport, including dry and wet deposition processes. This model was used as it describes the AOD's and mass concentrations realistic compared to the measurements and because it was run for the time period of the measurements. The four observation-based methods yield a monthly average deposition flux of mineral dust of 12–29 ng m−2 s−1. The simulation results come close to the upper range of the measurements with an average value of 47 ng m−2 s−1. It is shown that the mass deposition flux of mineral dust obtained by the combination of micrometeorological (ultra-sonic anemometer) and microphysical measurements (particle mass size distribution of mineral dust) is difficult to compare to modeled mass deposition fluxes when the mineral dust is inhomogeneously distributed over the investigated area.

Abstract:Each summer, the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) transports massive amounts of mineral dust across the Atlantic Ocean, affecting weather, climate, and public health over large areas. Despite the considerable impacts of African dust, the causes and impacts of extreme trans-Atlantic African dust events are not fully understood. The "Godzilla" trans-Atlantic dust event of 2020 has been extensively studied, but little is known about other similar events. Here, we examine the June 2015 event, the second strongest trans-Atlantic African dust event that occurred during the summers from 2003–2022. This event was characterized by moderately high dust emissions over western North Africa and an extremely high aerosol optical depth (AOD) over the tropical North Atlantic. The high dust loading over the Atlantic is associated with atmospheric circulation extremes similar to the Godzilla event. Both the African easterly jet (AEJ) and Caribbean low-level jet (CLLJ) have greatly intensified, along with a westward extension of the North Atlantic subtropical high (NASH), all of which favor the westward transport of African dust. The enhanced dust emissions are related to anomalously strong surface winds in dust source regions and reduced vegetation density and soil moisture across the northern Sahel.

Abstract:Dust aerosols in North Africa account for >50% of the global total; however dust emission areas are still unclear. Based on the analysis of dust storms simulated with the numerical Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model, satellite aerosol index (AI), and the dust data observed at 300 meteorological stations over 20 years, the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of dust storm, dust devil and AI are compared and analyzed. The results show that: 1) There are two dust emission mechanisms: the dynamically-dominated dust storm and thermally-dominated dust devil; 2) Dust storms occur most frequently in Spring and are concentrated in the areas of Grand Erg Occidental Desert to the Erg Chech-Adrar Desert, the northern part of Grand Erg Oriental, the Atouila Desert to the Ouarane Desert, the Mediterranean coast, the eastern side of Nubian Desert and Bodélé Depression; 3) Dust devils occur most frequently from April to August and are mainly concentrated in the central part of North Africa, especially in the southwest of Hoggar Mountains to the west of Air Mountains, the border area of Egypt - Sudan - Libya and the vicinity of Tibesti Plateau; 4) The spatio-temporal distribution of AI is correlated more with the dust devils emission whereas the annual average contributions by dust storms and dust devils are 61.3% and 38.7%, respectively. This study discovers a new area of dust emissions by dust devils, and provides a better explanation for the spatio-temporal distribution of AI in North Africa.

Abstract:Tracking Saharan-Sahelian dust across the globe is essential to elucidate its effects on Earth's climate, radiation budget, hydrologic cycle, nutrient cycling, and also human health when it seasonally enters populated/industrialized regions of Africa, Europe, and North America. However, the elemental composition of mineral dust arising locally from construction activities and aeolian soil resuspension overlaps with African dust. Therefore, we derived a novel "isotope-resolved chemical mass balance" (IRCMB) method by employing radiogenic strontium, neodymium, and hafnium isotopes to accurately differentiate and quantitatively apportion collinear proximal and synoptic-scale crustal and anthropogenic mineral dust sources. IRCMB was applied to two air masses that transported African dust to Barbados and Texas to track particulate matter (PM) spikes at both locations. During Saharan-Sahelian intrusions, the radiogenic content of urban PM2.5 increased with respect to 87Sr/86Sr and 176Hf/177Hf but decreased in terms of 143Nd/144Nd, demonstrating the ability of these isotopes to sensitively track African dust intrusions even in complex metropolitan atmospheres. The principal aerosol strontium, neodymium, and hafnium end members were concrete dust and soil, soil and motor vehicles, and motor vehicles and North African dust, respectively. IRCMB separated and quantified local soil and distal crustal dust even when PM2.5 concentrations were low, opening a promising source apportionment avenue for urbanized/industrialized atmospheres.

Abstract:In this paper, a long-term large-scale Saharan dust transport event which occurred between 14 and 27 June 2020 is tracked with the spaceborne lidars ALADIN (Atmospheric Laser Doppler Instrument) and CALIOP (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization) together with ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Forecasts) and HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model) analysis. We evaluate the performance of ALADIN and CALIOP on the observations of dust optical properties and wind fields and explore the possibility of tracking the dust events and calculating the dust mass advection with the combination of satellite and model data. The dust plumes are identified with the AIRS/Aqua Dust Score Index and with the vertical feature mask product from CALIOP. The emission, dispersion, transport and deposition of the dust event are monitored using the data from AIRS/Aqua, CALIOP and HYSPLIT. With the quasi-synchronized observations by ALADIN and CALIOP, combined with the wind field and relative humidity, the dust advection values are calculated. From this study, it is found that the dust event generated on 14 and 15 June 2020 from the Sahara in North Africa dispersed and moved westward over the Atlantic Ocean, finally being deposited in the western Atlantic Ocean, the Americas and the Caribbean Sea. During the transport and deposition processes, the dust plumes are trapped in the northeasterly trade-wind zone between latitudes of 5 ∘ and 30 ∘ N and altitudes of 0 and 6 km. Aeolus provided the observations of the dynamics of this dust transport event in the Saharan Air Layer (SAL). From the measurement results on 19 June 2020, the dust plumes are captured quasi-simultaneously over the emission region (Western Sahara), the transport region (middle Atlantic) and the deposition region (western Atlantic) individually, which indicates that the dust plume area over the Atlantic on the morning of this day is quite enormous and that this dust transport event is massive and extensive. The quasi-synchronization observation results of 15, 16, 19, 24 and 27 June by ALADIN and CALIOP during the entire transport process show good agreement with the Dust Score Index data and the HYSPLIT trajectories, which indicates that the transport process of the same dust event is tracked by ALADIN and CALIOP, verifies that the dust transport spent around 2 weeks from the emission to the deposition and achieved the respective observations of this dust event's emission phase, development phase, transport phase, descent phase and deposition phase. Finally, the advection values for different dust parts and heights on 19 June and on the entire transport routine during transportation are computed. On 19 June, the mean dust advection values are about 1.91±1.21 mg m −2 s −1 over the emission region, 1.38±1.28 mg m −2 s −1 over the transport region and 0.75±0.68mgm-2s-1 over the deposition region. In the whole lifetime of the dust event, the mean dust advection values were about 1.51±1.03mgm-2s-1 on 15 June 2020, 2.19±1.72mgm-2s-1 on 16 June 2020, 1.38±1.28mgm-2s-1 on 19 June 2020, 1.60±1.08mgm-2s-1 on 24 June 2020 and 1.03±0.60mgm-2s-1 on 27 June 2020. During the dust development stage, the mean advection values gradually increased and reached their maximum on 16 June with the enhancement of the dust event. Then, the mean advection values decreased during the transport and the deposition of the dust over the Atlantic Ocean, the Americas and the Caribbean Sea.

Abstract:In the Amazonian atmosphere, the aerosol coarse mode comprises a complex, diverse, and variable mixture of bioaerosols emitted from the rain forest ecosystem, long-range transported Saharan dust (we use Sahara as shorthand for the dust source regions in Africa north of the Equator), marine aerosols from the Atlantic Ocean, and coarse smoke particles from deforestation fires. For the rain forest, the coarse mode particles are of significance with respect to biogeochemical and hydrological cycling, as well as ecology and biogeography. However, knowledge on the physicochemical and biological properties as well as the ecological role of the Amazonian coarse mode is still sparse. This study presents results from multi-year coarse mode measurements at the remote Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) site. It combines online aerosol observations, selected remote sensing and modeling results, as well as dedicated coarse mode sampling and analysis. The focal points of this study are a systematic characterization of aerosol coarse mode abundance and properties in the Amazonian atmosphere as well as a detailed analysis of the frequent, pulse-wise intrusion of African long-range transport (LRT) aerosols (comprising Saharan dust and African biomass burning smoke) into the Amazon Basin.We find that, on a multi-year time scale, the Amazonian coarse mode maintains remarkably constant concentration levels (with 0.4 cm−3 and 4.0 µg m−3 in the wet vs. 1.2 cm−3 and 6.5 µg m−3 in the dry season) with rather weak seasonality (in terms of abundance and size spectrum), which is in stark contrast to the pronounced biomass burning-driven seasonality of the submicron aerosol population and related parameters. For most of the time, bioaerosol particles from the forest biome account for a major fraction of the coarse mode background population. However, from December to April there are episodic intrusions of African LRT aerosols, comprising Saharan dust, sea salt particles from the transatlantic passage, and African biomass burning smoke. Remarkably, during the core period of this LRT season (i.e., February–March), the presence of LRT influence, occurring as a sequence of pulse-like plumes, appears to be the norm rather than an exception. The LRT pulses increase the coarse mode concentrations drastically (up to 100 µg m−3) and alter the coarse mode composition as well as its size spectrum. Efficient transport of the LRT plumes into the Amazon Basin takes place in response to specific mesoscale circulation patterns in combination with the episodic absence of rain-related aerosol scavenging en route. Based on a modeling study, we estimated a dust deposition flux of 5–10 kg ha−1 a−1 in the region of the ATTO site. Furthermore, a chemical analysis quantified the substantial increase of crustal and sea salt elements under LRT conditions in comparison to the background coarse mode composition. With these results, we estimated the deposition fluxes of various elements that are considered as nutrients for the rain forest ecosystem. These estimates range from few g ha−1 a−1 up to several hundreds of g ha−1 a−1 in the ATTO region.The long-term data presented here provide a statistically solid basis for future studies of the manifold aspects of the dynamic coarse mode aerosol cycling in the Amazon. Thus, it may help to understand its biogeochemical relevance in this ecosystem as well as to evaluate to what extent anthropogenic influences have altered the coarse mode cycling already.
Identification and Characterization of Dust Source Regions Across North Africa and the Middle East Using MISR Satellite Observations

Abstract:Motivated by limitations in current satellite‐based dust source identification techniques, this study examines dust emissions and concentrations over North Africa and the Middle East during 2000–2016 by analyzing stereo and optical products from the Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer instrument on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration polar‐orbiting Terra satellite. Based on the occurrence of fast‐moving, near‐surface dust plumes from the Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer cloud motion vector product, dust sources in the study region are identified in geographical depressions, including the Bodélé Depression, which represents the leading source. The West African El Djouf desert generates substantial dust emissions, which are typically underestimated by aerosol loading‐based dust source identifications. In response to local vegetation cover anomalies, dust emissions and concentrations increased at 15% year−1 over the Middle East and decreased at 12% year−1over the central Sahel during 2001–2013 but partly recovered toward their climatological means afterward.
Identifying and Quantifying the Impacts of Advected North African Dust on the Concentration and Composition of Airborne Fine Particulate Matter in Houston and Galveston, Texas

Abstract:Every summer, large‐scale dust plumes emerge from the west coast of North Africa, cross the Atlantic, enter the Caribbean Basin, and on occasion pass over the southern United States. We show that such dust events significantly increase the concentration and alter the chemical composition of ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) in southern Texas. Between 01 August and 13 September, 2014, PM 2.5 was sampled daily at Clinton Drive, an industrial location in Houston, and at Galveston located on the Gulf of Mexico coast that is not directly impacted by local and regional pollution sources. Between 17‐25 August, average PM 2.5 concentrations nearly doubled when a large dust‐laden African air mass moved through the region. Using ground‐based measurements, satellite observations, and modeling tools, we demonstrate that this massive influx of mineral dust greatly reduced the relative abundance of pollutants in Houston where aerosols are otherwise dominated by local and regional emissions. Chemical mass balance modeling estimated that African dust contributed 19‐48% of PM 2.5 during the 9‐day dust episode. Moreover, African dust was present throughout the measurement period even on days outside the main dust event contributing an estimated ~8% of PM 2.5 and suggests that it may be a normal summertime component in this region. These measurements agree closely with inferences of "fine dust" based on a generic soil composition in the IMPROVE (National Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments) network. Our detailed protocol supports the conclusion that African dust affects a wide region of the South, Southeast and East Coast United States.

Abstract:The Sahara desert is one of the major sources of mineral dust on Earth, producing up to 2x108 t yr-1. A combined effort has been devoted during the last ten years at the University of Athens (UOA) from the Atmospheric Modeling and Weather Forecasting Group (AM&WFG) to the development of an analysis and forecasting tool that will provide early warning of Saharan dust outbreaks. The developed tool is the SKIRON limited-area forecasting system, based on the Eta limited area modeling system with embedded algorithms describing the dust cycle. A new version of the model is currently available, with extra features like eight-size particle bins, radiative transfer corrections, new dust source identification and utilization of rocky soil characterization and incorporation of more accurate deposition schemes. The new version of SKIRON modeling system is coupled with the photochemical model CAMx in order to study processes like the shading effect of dust particles on photochemical processes and the production of second and third generation of aerosols. Moreover, another new development in the AM&WFG is based on the RAMS model, with the incorporation of processes like dust and sea-salt production, gas and aqueous phase chemistry and particle formation. In this study, the major characteristics of the developed (and under development) modeling systems are presented, as well as the spatiotemporal distribution of the transported dust amounts, the interaction with anthropogenically-produced particles and the potential implications on radiative transfer.
Disproving the Bodele Depression as the Primary Source of Dust Fertilizing the Amazon Rainforest

Abstract:Motivated by the ongoing debates about the relative contribution of specific North African dust sources to the transatlantic dust transport to the Amazon Basin, the current study integrates a suite of satellite observations into a novel trajectory analysis framework to investigate dust transport from the leading two North African dust sources, namely, the Bodele depression and El Djouf. In particular, this approach provides observation-constrained quantification of the dust's dry and wet deposition along its transport pathways and is validated against multiple satellite observations. The current large ensemble trajectory simulations identify favorable transport pathways from the El Djouf across the Atlantic Ocean with respect to seasonal rain belts. The limited potential for long-range transport of dust from the Bodele depression is attributed to the currently identified extensive near-source dust removal primarily by dry and wet deposition during boreal winter and summer, respectively.
Influence of Saharan Dust on the Large‐Scale Meteorological Environment for Development of Tropical Cyclone over North Atlantic Ocean Basin

Abstract:The tropical cyclones (TCs) frequently occur in the North Atlantic Ocean Basin, which is adjacent to West Africa, the largest global source of atmospheric dust. However, few studies have conducted systematic observational research of how dust affects the genesis conditions of TCs at large scales which includes sea surface temperature (SST), vorticity, vertical wind shear, and specific humidity. This study focused on the period from June-September in the years 2000 to 2018 to investigate the horizontal and vertical distributions of aerosol optical depth (AOD) (dust) and meteorological parameters. Dust can be transported at 600 hPa upward and is mixed well within the troposphere over land, while it is mainly distributed in the lower troposphere over the ocean. The SST is significantly suppressed by dust due to direct radiation effects, but the atmospheric temperature is warmer at 20-40 degrees W between 700 and 850 hPa. The vertical distributions of temperature and specific humidity are similar. Dust decreases specific humidity in the lower troposphere over the ocean, especially in high AOD regions, but enhances midlevel moisture. Dust heats the lower troposphere and favors the development of convection and positive vorticity at heights of approximately 800-1,000 hPa. The warming effect of dust on the lower atmosphere over land and the nearby oceans results in strengthened West African monsoons and vertical wind shear. Thus, dust suppresses the SST and low-level specific humidities and favors wind shear and positive relative vorticity, which further influence environmental conditions in the TC genesis region.
African aerosol and large-scale precipitation variability over West Africa

Abstract:We investigated the large-scale connection between African aerosol and precipitation in the West African Monsoon (WAM) region using 8-year (2000-2007) monthly and daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol products (aerosol optical depth, fine mode fraction) and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation and rain type. These high-quality data further confirmed our previous results that the large-scale link between aerosol and precipitation in this region undergoes distinct seasonal and spatial variability. Previously detected suppression of precipitation during months of high aerosol concentration occurs in both convective and stratiform rain, but not systematically in shallow rain. This suggests the suppression of deep convection due to the aerosol. Based on the seasonal cycle of dust and smoke and their geographical distribution, our data suggest that both dust (coarse mode aerosol) and smoke (fine mode aerosol) contribute to the precipitation suppression. However, the dust effect is evident over the Gulf of Guinea while the smoke effect is evident over both land and ocean. A back trajectory analysis further demonstrates that the precipitation reduction is statistically linked to the upwind aerosol concentration. This study suggests that African aerosol outbreaks in the WAM region can influence precipitation in the local monsoon system which has direct societal impact on the local community. It calls for more systematic investigations to determine the modulating mechanisms using both observational and modeling approaches.
Dust Source Activation Frequency in the Horn of Africa

Abstract:Abstract Mineral dust aerosols play an important role in Earth's climate through interactions with incoming solar radiation, clouds, and the atmosphere. However, dust sources in the Horn of Africa (HoA) and controls on their activation are poorly documented. Here, we use fifteen‐minute Meteosat Second Generation Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager dust index images to identify HoA dust source areas and to quantify their activation frequency in 1° × 1° resolution from 2006 to 2010. Around half of all recorded dust events occur in boreal summer, mostly between 8:00 and 16:00 local time. They are driven by meso‐ to regional scale meteorological mechanisms including the breakdown of the nocturnal low‐level jets, land‐sea breezes, and haboobs. By far the most dust‐active region in the HoA is the Afar Triangle (>77% of all recorded dust events) which features the Afar and Danakil depressions and is fed by the Awash River. Despite experiencing strong and persistent southwest summer monsoon winds, dust activation on the Somali Peninsula is less significant. A composite of our map with data for North Africa and westernmost Asia shows that the HoA is a striking latitudinal anomaly with dust activation extending deep into the equatorial belt. Our data also reveal that dust activation is unusually seasonal with ∼40% of events occurring in June and July. Our findings show that aridity and mean wind strength alone are poor predictors of dust activation and underscore the strong control exerted by the availability of readily deflated unconsolidated riverine and lacustrine sediments.

Abstract:Highlights of current dust and mineral aerosol modeling activities at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), and projections for the future are presented. On the atmospheric modeling side, current activities are reviewed on the development of a unified nonhydrostatic atmospheric model that can be used for driving dust and aerosol models on a wide range of scales extending from meso to global. Finally, some of the outstanding problems associated with modeling of the transport of atmospheric constituents are discussed.
Climate Characteristics of Dust Aerosol and Its Transport in Major Global Dust Source Regions

Abstract:In this paper, a 20-year (1991-2010) simulation of dust aerosol emission is conducted by using the global climate model CAM 5.1 (Community Atmosphere Model, version 5.1). The simulation results revealed that North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the Middle East, East Asia, Australia, and the other regions respectively account for 60%, 18%, 12%, 2.5% and 7.5% of the global dust aerosol emission. On this basis, the climatology of dust aerosol emission, deposition and transport in the major dust source regions of the world are characterized. The results show that the inter-annual trends of dust emissions and depositions in the four major source areas are basically consistent, and the seasonal variations of dust emissions, dry and wet depositions are stronger than inter-annual variations. The seasonal variations of emissions and total depositions are the strongest in East Asia and the weakest in North Africa. The strongest seasonal variation of wet deposition appears in North Africa and the weakest in Australia. The dry and wet deposition ratios vary significantly with season. East Asia is dominated by wet deposition, while other areas are dominated by dry deposition. The dust transport in four major dust regions is mainly affected by the circulation systems at each level, the free tropospheric (500 hPa) transport of dust aerosol is controlled by the mid-latitude westerlies, and the dust aerosol is predominantly transported from west to east. But, the transport of dust aerosols in the atmospheric boundary layer shows distinct regional characteristics, with weak inter-annual variation and strong seasonal variation.
Future Decline of African Dust: Insights from the Recent Past and Paleo-records

Abstract:African dust exhibits strong variability on a range of time scales. Here we show that the interhemispheric contrast in Atlantic SST (ICAS) drives African dust variability on interannual, multidecadal, and millennial timescales, and a strong anthropogenic decline of African dust in the future can be expected due to the projected increase of the ICAS. During the recent past, the ICAS is found to significantly correlate with various dust observations and proxies that extend as far back as 1851. Physically, positive ICAS anomalies induce large-scale circulation changes that push the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) northward and decrease surface wind speed over African dust source regions, which reduces dust emission and transport to the tropical Atlantic. The ICAS-ITCZ-dust relationship also finds robust support from paleo-climate observations that span the last 17,000 years. The ICAS drive of African dust variability is consistent with documented relationships between dust activity and Sahel precipitation6, the North Atlantic Oscillation7, and time series of a surface wind speed pattern over Northern Africa8, and offers a unified framework to understand them. The ICAS-dust connection implies that human activities that change ICAS through emitting greenhouse gases and pollutions have affected and will continue to affect African dust. Climate models project that anthropogenic increase of the ICAS can push the ICAS value to surpass the highest level attained during the Holocene by the end of this century and decrease African dust activity by as much as 60% off its current level, which has broad consequences for aspects of the climate in the North Atlantic region and beyond.

Global‐scale attribution of anthropogenic and natural dust sources and their emission rates based on MODIS Deep Blue aerosol products

Abstract:Our understanding of the global dust cycle is limited by a dearth of information about dust sources, especially small‐scale features which could account for a large fraction of global emissions. Here we present a global‐scale high‐resolution (0.1°) mapping of sources based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Deep Blue estimates of dust optical depth in conjunction with other data sets including land use. We ascribe dust sources to natural and anthropogenic (primarily agricultural) origins, calculate their respective contributions to emissions, and extensively compare these products against literature. Natural dust sources globally account for 75% of emissions; anthropogenic sources account for 25%. North Africa accounts for 55% of global dust emissions with only 8% being anthropogenic, mostly from the Sahel. Elsewhere, anthropogenic dust emissions can be much higher (75% in Australia). Hydrologic dust sources (e.g., ephemeral water bodies) account for 31% worldwide; 15% of them are natural while 85% are anthropogenic. Globally, 20% of emissions are from vegetated surfaces, primarily desert shrublands and agricultural lands. Since anthropogenic dust sources are associated with land use and ephemeral water bodies, both in turn linked to the hydrological cycle, their emissions are affected by climate variability. Such changes in dust emissions can impact climate, air quality, and human health. Improved dust emission estimates will require a better mapping of threshold wind velocities, vegetation dynamics, and surface conditions (soil moisture and land use) especially in the sensitive regions identified here, as well as improved ability to address small‐scale convective processes producing dust via cold pool (haboob) events frequent in monsoon regimes.

Abstract:Abstract Atmospheric measurements in two Sahelian sites in West Africa are presented and analyzed. The measurements were performed using a sun photometer with five bands in the visible and near-infrared range of the solar spectrum. This instrument measures spectral values of the solar irradiances that are used to derive the aerosol optical thickness in three bands; the two other bands are used to derive the integrated atmospheric water vapor content using a differential absorption method. The Angstrom exponent, which is an estimate of the aerosol particle size, is derived from the spectral dependence of the optical thickness. Although the sites were located far from Sahara Desert aerosol sources, the observed aerosol optical thicknesses were high, with a mean annual value of 0.5 at 550 nm. The spectral dependence of aerosol optical thickness is generally low, with a mean annual value of Angstrom's exponent of 0.4.
