Abstract:Aligned ZnO/ZnSe core/shell nanorods (NRs) with type-II energy band alignment were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition of ZnSe on the surfaces of hydrothermally grown ZnO NRs. The obtained ZnO/ZnSe core/shell NRs are composed of wurtzite ZnO cores and zinc blende ZnSe shells. The bare ZnO NRs are capable of emitting strong ultraviolet (UV) near band edge (NBE) emission at 325-nm light excitation, while the ZnSe shells greatly suppress the emission from the ZnO cores. High-temperature processing results in an improvement in the structures of the ZnO cores and the ZnSe shells and significant changes in the optical properties of ZnO/ZnSe core/shell NRs. The fabricated ZnO/ZnSe core/shell NRs show optical properties corresponding to the two excitonic band gaps of wurtzite ZnO and zinc blende ZnSe and the effective band gap between the conduction band minimum of ZnO and the valence band maximum ZnSe. An extended photoresponse much wider than those of the constituting ZnO and ZnSe and a multi-band photoluminescence including the UV NBE emission of ZnO and the blue NBE emission of ZnSe are observed.

Abstract:Vertically aligned ZnO/ZnSe core/shell nanorod (NR) arrays were fabricated on Si (100) using combined approach of hydrothermal growth of ZnO followed by pulsed laser deposition of ZnSe. The obtained ZnO/ZnSe core/shell NRs are composed of wurtzite ZnO cores and zinc blende ZnSe shells with the hydrothermally grown ZnO core nanorods preferentially c-axis oriented. Upon excitation by 325 nm light at room temperature, the ZnO/ZnSe core/shell NR arrays emit multi-band photoluminescence (PL) including the near-band-edge (NBE) emissions of ZnO and ZnSe as well as the defect-related emission and the emission associated with the effective band gap formed due to the staggered band alignment of the heterojunction constructed from ZnO and ZnSe, while the NBE emission of the ZnO cores is greatly suppressed by the ZnSe shells. The PL shows a strong dependence on temperature. Post-fabrication annealing of the samples in N2 results in an improvement in crystal structure and an enhancement of PL intensity.

Abstract:Zn 1−x Cu x O nanorods with different Cu concentrations are prepared by a hydrothermal method. Bent and aggregated nanorods are obtained, which is attributed to centripetal surface tension of the evaporation and coagulation processes of the water film on the ZnO nanorods. The broad visible band consists of one violet, three blue, and one green emission. The violet emission is due to the transition of electrons from zinc interstitial (Zn i ) levels to the valance band. The three blue emissions may be attributed to the transition from extended Zn i levels, which are slightly below the simple Zn i level, to the valance band. The change of the green emission may be the result of competition between oxygen vacancies (V O ) and zinc vacancies (V Zn ).

Abstract:Single-crystalline ZnO nanorods with an average diameter of 16nm were fabricated by a simple microemulsion route using dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid sodium (DBS) as a capping agent. Structural characterizations using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the well-dispersed ZnO nanorods have a wurtzite structure with a c-axis growth orientation. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurement of the ZnO nanorods has been carried out and the strong excitonic emission and quite weak deep level emission were observed.

Abstract:Highly ordered pure and Co-doped ZnO nanorod arrays were synthesized by a solution method at low temperature. The structures and morphology of the samples were studied by XRD, EDS and FESEM as well as Raman, which reveal that the samples are wurtzite structure; the Co atoms successfully substitute Zn atoms positions in nanocrystal. The PL properties of the as-prepared specimens were principally investigated using PL spectroscopy at room temperature and ultralow temperatures. The results strongly disclose that Co-doping can effectively adjust the energy level and abound the contents of surface states in ZnO nanorods, which lead to shift in the emission peak position in ultraviolet (UV) region and enhance the luminescence performance in visible (VL) light region of nanorod arrays. In addition, the slow vibration of phonons in nanocrystal lattice at ultralow temperature can also possibly contribute towards the novel emission performances of Co-doped arrays.

Abstract:Overcoating of CdSe nanorods with a ZnO shell leads to observation of dual visible and near‐infrared photoluminescence with a dramatic enhancement in quantum yield and the lifetime of the excited state. The visible emission is a result of the electron‐hole recombination within the CdSe core, while the NIR emission is a result of type‐II carrier recombination across the CdSe/ZnO interface, resulting from an electron delocalization. A synthesis and characterization of luminescent nano‐heterostructures consisting of CdSe nanorod (NR) cores and a ZnO shell with up to three monolayers of ZnO is reported. The core/shell heterostructures show a tunable, dual photoluminescence (PL) in visible and Near Infrared (NIR) spectral ranges. Upon shelling the visible PL band attributed to the carrier recombination within the CdSe core shifts to lower energy by ≈0.05 to 0.15 eV relative to the bare CdSe NRs, due to a reduced quantum confinement. A NIR band, observed ≈0.4 – 0.5 eV below the PL energy of the CdSe core, is attributed to a type‐II carrier recombination across the CdSe/ZnO interface. The total PL quantum yield (PLQY) in the brightest heterostructures reaches ≈20%, increasing ≈100‐fold over the PLQY of the corresponding bare CdSe NRs. The average lifetimes of the visible PL in some heterostructures exceeds 100 ns, compared to ≈5 ns lifetime typical for bare CdSe NRs. The average PL lifetimes attributed to the type‐II charge separated states exceed one microsecond. Strong NIR PL, tunable in the 800–900 nm spectral range and the long‐lived charge separated state make the CdSe/ZnO core‐shell NRs appealing materials for exploitation in applications such as bioimaging, photocatalysis and optoelectronics.

Abstract:The cathodoluminescence (CL) properties including intensity and distribution of the band to band and defect emission of the flower-like ZnO, ZnO/ZnS core–shell and tube-like ZnS nanostructures have been investigated. It is indicated that the Ultraviolet (UV) emission at 380nm of the flower-like ZnO nanostructures due to the band to band emission is weaker than their yellow emission at 600nm induced by interstitial oxygen. Moreover, the UV emission of the ZnO nanorods unevenly distributes from the tip to the end. The UV emission on the tip is stronger than that of others due to the waveguide. On the contrary, the yellow emission at 600nm is uniform. Furthermore, the UV emission of ZnO has been greatly enhanced and the yellow emission has been inhibited by the formation of ZnO/ZnS core–shell nanostructures in the sulfuration process due to the elimination of interstitial oxygen. However, the polycrystalline tube-like ZnS nanostructures shows the uniform and weak defect emission due to S vacancies.

Abstract:ZnO nanostructures were synthesized on Si (100) substrates via vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process. The morphology and the crystal quality of the product were controlled by reaction time in the mixture atmosphere of N-2 and O-2. Combining with the microstructure analysis through X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction (SAED), the temperature-dependent photoluminescence was measured to understand the light emission behaviors. The results demonstrated three kinds of optical transitions: exciton related transition, free charge carrier transition to the bound states, and donor acceptor pair transition.

Abstract:Realizing multicolored luminescence in two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials would afford potential for a range of next-generation nanoscale optoelectronic devices. Moreover, combining fine structured spectral line emission and detection may further enrich the studies and applications of functional nanomaterials. Herein, a lanthanide doping strategy has been utilized for the synthesis of 2D ZnSe:Er3+ nanosheets to achieve fine-structured, multicolor luminescence spectra. Simultaneous upconversion and downconversion emission is realized, which can cover an ultrabroadband optical range, from ultraviolet through visible to the near-infrared region. By investigating the low-temperature fine structure of emission spectra at 4 K, we have observed an abundance of sublevel electronic energy transitions, elucidating the electronic structure of Er3+ ions in the 2D ZnSe nanosheet. As the temperature is varied, these nanosheets exhibit tunable multicolored luminescence under 980 and 365 nm excitation. Utilizing the distinct sublevel transitions of Er3+ ions, the developed 2D ZnSe:Er3+ optical temperature sensor shows high absolute (15.23% K–1) and relative sensitivity (8.61% K–1), which is superior to conventional Er3+-activated upconversion luminescent nanothermometers. Abstract:Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties of quasialigned Al-doped ZnO nanorods grown by thermal evaporation method were investigated. The ionization energy of the Al donor was determined to be ∼90meV. A PL peak at 3.315eV was observed at low temperature and was tentatively related to excitons bound to surface defects. The emission, along with its first longitudinal optical phonon replica, persists up to room temperature and dominates the near band edge (NBE) emission of the nanorods. The doping of Al results in a redshift of ∼0.04eV of the room-temperature NBE emission of the ZnO nanorods.
Type-I CdSe@CdS@ZnS Heterostructured Nanocrystals with Long Fluorescence Lifetime

Abstract:Conventional single-component quantum dots (QDs) suffer from low recombination rates of photogenerated electrons and holes, which hinders their ability to meet the requirements for LED and laser applications. Therefore, it is urgent to design multicomponent heterojunction nanocrystals with these properties. Herein, we used CdSe quantum dot nanocrystals as a typical model, which were synthesized by means of a colloidal chemistry method at high temperatures. Then, CdS with a wide band gap was used to encapsulate the CdSe QDs, forming a CdSe@CdS core@shell heterojunction. Finally, the CdSe@CdS core@shell was modified through the growth of the ZnS shell to obtain CdSe@CdS@ZnS heterojunction nanocrystal hybrids. The morphologies, phases, structures and performance characteristics of CdSe@CdS@ZnS were evaluated using various analytical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and time-resolved transient photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results show that the energy band structure is transformed from type II to type I after the ZnS growth. The photoluminescence lifetime increases from 41.4 ns to 88.8 ns and the photoluminescence quantum efficiency reaches 17.05% compared with that of pristine CdSe QDs. This paper provides a fundamental study and a new route for studying light-emitting devices and biological imaging based on multicomponent QDs.

Abstract:The origin of the visible emissions in ZnO nanostructures is a long-standing issue. In this work, a strong orange emission around 2.1 eV in ZnO:Se nanorods is reported. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) and PL decay results indicate that radiative recombination dominates the overall decay process, leading to highly efficient orange emission at room temperature. It is proposed that Se acts as isoelectronic centers and no evidence of ZnO1−xSex alloy formation is found. Based on the PL excitation results, we propose a Se-induced impurity band model to describe the photophysics of the orange emission.

Abstract:Linear CdTe|CdSe|CdTe heterostructure nanorods are synthesized by using a colloidal sequential reactant injection technique [Shieh et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 8538-8542]. The composition profiles of the individual nanorods are verified by using nanobeam elemental mapping by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and the photoluminescence emission spectra of the linear CdTe|CdSe|CdTe heterostructure nanorods are measured as a function of the temperature (down to 5 K). Photoluminescence is observed to occur from electron-hole recombination in both the CdSe core and across the heterojunction. Thermally activated trapping is found to influence both luminescence processes, thereby being more significant for the type II recombination across the CdSe|CdTe interface.

Abstract:We report angular dependent microphotoluminescence measurements on individual suspended ZnO nanorods attached to sharp metal tips. The luminescence measured along and perpendicular to the axis of the same single nanorod indicates quantitatively that >99% of the near band edge emission can be confined effectively in the nanorods and emitted from the end facets. The radially confined luminescence is dominated by P bands and LO phonon replicas of the free exciton emission and P bands. The measurements along the length of the nanorods show that the confinement is evidently influenced by the surface structure. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Core/shell quantum dots (QDs) show novel properties compared to conventional single QDs, such as high quantum yields, excellent photostability, good monodispersity. In aqueous solution, monodisperse and highly luminescent ZnSe:Eu3+/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals were synthesized by the two-step wet chemical method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of ZnSe:Eu(3+)QDs and ZnSe:Eu3+/ZnS core/shell QDs showed nearly monodisperse particles with size of around 2.9 nm +/- 0.3 and 4.5 nm +/- 0.3. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) results show that ZnSe:Eu3+/ZnS QDs possess cubic zinc blende structure. The effects of the reaction time on the luminescence properties were systematically studied. From the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, it was found that the ZnSe:Eu3+/ZnS nanocrystals with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) capping exhibited the Eu3+ ion related characteristic luminescence. When a larger band gap ZnS shell was deposited at the surface of the ZnSe:Eu3+ core, luminescence of Eu3+ ion related emission was enhanced nearly two times. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Optical properties of star-shaped ZnO nanostructures were studied. The temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) was examined up to fourth-order longitudinal optical (LO) phonon assisted emissions of free excitons and confirmed that the nature of the room temperature PL in ZnO is 1-LO phonon assisted emission of free excitons. Low threshold ultraviolet stimulated emissions (SE) were obtained for our powder samples at room temperature. Picosecond time-resolved PL measurements detected a bi-exponential decay behavior which is strongly dependent on the excitation intensity: the slow decay term decreased faster than the fast decay term as the excitation intensity increased and the emission decays were dominated by the fast one. We also found that the emission decays decreased super-linearly before the appearance of the SE. This behavior may be used to deduce the threshold of SE or lasing.

Abstract:Two ZnO nanostructures with multisegment structure have been synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method on a silicon substrate. The top size of the nanostructures can reduce to 10-30 nm, which is beneficial to field emission applications. Scanning and transmission electron microscope methods are applied to analyze the morphology and microstructure of the nanostructures. Cathodoluminescence study shows that the ZnO nanostructures have core-shell luminescent structure that will affect significantly the mechanical and electrical properties of the ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:Vertically well-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays with highly crystalline wurtzite structures were synthesized on ITO glass substrates by a two-step hydrothermal method, and then, annealed at different temperatures and under different atmospheres. Photoluminescence spectra showed a near-band-edge (NBE) emission peak and an intense broad visible emission band for as-grown and annealed samples. These visible emission bands exhibited dependences on post-annealing conditions and excitation energies. Emission shifting in the visible region was investigated and explained in terms of the presence of defects. Based on these findings, we demonstrate that the visible emission in these materials can be tailored by controlling the defects in ZnO. Under different annealing conditions, it is possible to manipulate the emission in the visible region, which has important implications for the production of optoelectronic devices.
