Abstract:The construction of lightweight manipulators with a larger speed range is one of the major goals in the design of well-behaving industrial robotic arms. However, due to the flexibility involved with link deformation and the complexity of distributed parameter systems, modeling and control of flexible manipulators still remain a major challenge to robotic research. Mechatronic design treats the mechanical, electrical and control components of a flexible manipulator concurrently. The result is an global optimal design with controller parameters which result in the control problem and modeling accuracy no longer being critical for obtaining desired performance while the coupling effects among subsystems being taken into account automatically. The state-space equation for the generalized plant is derived, an H. controller is described that internally stabilizes the close-loop system, but minimizes all impacts from system uncertainties and disturbances. The responses for step-type disturbance and step input are carried out to show the system robustness. At last, numerical results to various cases are presented.

Abstract:For linear multivariable discrete-time control systems, a new design approach to robust optimal controllers is developed in this paper. By presenting a new design concept to select row characteristic functions for a multi-variable system, a robust decomposition method is built up to guarantee the normalization of the closed-loop transfer function matrix. The H-infinity robust stability and the optimal time domain indices for the closed-loop system are then achieved simultaneously by utilizing the 1-infinity optimal control approach in its decoupling equivalent system. Finally, optimization and robustness of this digital controller are verified by an on-line application in a paper-making control system for three different indices of quantity and moisture.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a fuzzy singularly perturbed model (FSPM) for the dynamics of a flexible-link manipulator. We extend the Takagi-Sugeno model to approximate the dynamics of the flexible-link manipulator by softly merging locally linear singularly perturbed models using membership functions. Based on the FSPM, a mixed H2/H∞ optimal and robust controller is developed for a flexible-link manipulator to achieve the suboptimal H2 control performance with a desired H∞ disturbance rejection constraint. Finally, an application example for a single-link manipulator shows the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control approach. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:Robotic manipulators are often coupled with joint flexibilities which will result in unwanted vibrations during the operation of the manipulators and must be controlled or suppressed. In this paper we first developed the dynamics of a single rigid-link flexible-joint robotic manipulator mathematically. In order to obtain an accurate dynamic model, we take into account of the system factors, such as, joint flexibility, damping and friction. Then an impedance controller was designed to perform accurate positioning as well as residual vibration suppression during the operation based on the precise dynamic model. Abstract:Under the integration optimization object, the beam shape and controller parameters were obtained by using an adaptive iterative algorithm with the accommodation of various geometrical constraints to consider the coupling between the controller and the mechanical structure of a flexible manipulator concurrently. The global optimization method was designed to combine the physical construction design with control algorithm by using the structure optimization as the outer-loop and the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control as inner-loop. The simulation work of a single link flexible beam was done. The simulation results showed that the integration method to consider the control law and the structure optimization synthetically is effective and feasible.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the control design for manipulator handling a flexible payload in the presence of input constraints. The dynamics of the system is described by coupled ordinary differential equation and a partial differential equation. Considering actuators saturation, the proposed control law applies a smooth hyperbolic function to handle the effect of the input constraints. The asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is proved by using semi group theory and extended LaSalle' s Invariance Principle. Simulation results show that the proposed controller is effective.

Abstract:The optimum design of parallel manipulators is an important and challenging problem. Currently, much of optimization work has been done over several criteria related to workspace, stiffness, dexterity and conditioning index. Relatively few papers have taken the control problem into consideration. In this paper, an optimal design method based on generalized natural frequency is proposed, which aims to expand the bandwidth for the control of large hydraulic Stewart platform. A Lagrangian formulation which considers the whole leg inertia is presented to obtain accurate equivalent inertia matrix, based on which, the influence of design parameters on generalized natural frequency is studied. Conclusion drawn from numerical examples, based on more accurate model, demonstrates that the leg inertia especially the piston part plays an important role on the dynamics, and five design parameters (diameters of the moving platform and the base, piston mass, effective driving area and fully retracted leg length) influence the frequency most.

Abstract:This work is a computer simulation of the control of a flexible robot arm. The dynamic equations for a single-link flexible robot arm have been derived rigorously. This arm has two degrees of freedom in rotation and one in translation so that the workspace is three-dimensional. The payload is simulated by attaching additional mass to the arm at a specified location. The governing equations of the plant and the measurements are nonlinear. The process of control is divided into two stages: coarse control and fine control. Based on the optimal control theory, a linear observer is constructed for fine control. The numerical results are presented here.

Abstract:The integrated optimal design of mechanical and control system is discussed in terms of the performance requirement and configuration for the single arm flexible manipulator. By combination of dynamics of flexible structure and control theory, a PD feedback control system, which minimizes the settling time, has been designed. Then, the viable region of poles of the PD closed-loop control system is decided according to overshoot and the settling time, and an integrated optimal model of structure and control of single arm manipulator is presented. Finally, the parameters of structure and control system are simultaneously optimized with respect to objective function including the moment of inertia and the control effort of system.

Abstract:This paper addresses the design and properties of an intelligent optimal control for a nonlinear flexible robot arm that is driven by a permanent-magnet synchronous servo motor. First, the dynamic model of a flexible robot arm system with a tip mass is introduced. When the tip mass of the flexible robot arm is a rigid body, not only bending vibration but also torsional vibration are occurred. In this paper, the vibration states of the nonlinear system are assumed to be unmeasurable, i.e., only the actuator position can be acquired to feed into a suitable control system for stabilizing the vibration states indirectly. Then, an intelligent optimal control system is proposed to control the motor-mechanism coupling system for periodic motion. In the intelligent optimal control system a fuzzy neural network controller is used to learn a nonlinear function in the optimal control law, and a robust controller is designed to compensate the approximation error. Moreover, a simple adaptive algorithm is proposed to adjust the uncertain bound in the robust controller avoiding the chattering phenomena. The control laws of the intelligent optimal control system are derived in the sense of optimal control technique and Lyapunov stability analysis, so that system-tracking stability can be guaranteed in the closed-loop system. In addition, numerical simulation and experimental results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Abstract:k]A design and optimization approach of dynamic and control performance for a two-DOF planar manipulator was proposed. After the kinematic and dynamic analysis, several advantages of the mechanism were illustrated, which made it possible to obtain good dynamic and control performances just through mechanism optimization. Based on the idea of design for control (DFC), a novel kind of multi-objective optimization model was proposed. There were three optimization objectives: the index of inertia, the index describing the dynamic coupling effects and the global condition number. Other indexes to characterize the designing requirements such as the velocity of end-effector, the workspace size, and the first mode natural frequency were regarded as the constraints. The cross-section area and length of the linkages were chosen as the design variables. NSGA-II algorithm was introduced to solve this complex multi-objective optimization problem. Additional criteria from engineering experience were incorporated into the selecting of final parameters among the obtained Pareto solution sets. Finally, experiments were performed to validate the linear dynamic structure and control performances of the optimized mechanisms. A new expression for measuring the dynamic coupling degree with clear physical meaning was proposed. The results show that the optimized mechanism has an approximate decoupled dynamics structure, and each active joint can be regarded as a linear SISO system. The control performances of the linear and nonlinear controllers were also compared. It can be concluded that the optimized mechanism can achieve good control performance only using a linear controller.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to study the controller design of flexible manipulator. Flexible manipulator system is a nonlinear, strong coupling, time-varying system, which is introduced elastodynamics in the study and complicated to control. However, due to the flexible manipulator, system has a significant advantage in response speed, control accuracy and load weight ratio to attract a lot of researchers. Design/methodology/approach - Since the order of flexible manipulator system is high, designing controller process will be complex, and have a large amount of calculation, but this paper will use the dynamic surface control method to solve this problem. Findings - Dynamic surface control method as a controller design method which can effectively solve the problem with the system contains nonlinear and reduced design complexity. Originality/value - The authors assume that the dynamic parameters of flexible manipulator system are unknown, and use Radial Basis Function neural network to approach the unknown system, combined with the dynamic surface control method to design the controller.

Abstract:In this paper, a geometrical optimization and reducers selection method is proposed for robotic manipulators design, which considers the flexibility of links and joints simultaneously. The Lagrangian approach is employed in deriving the dynamic model of a two-DOF manipulator. Timoshenko model is used to discretize the dynamic model. Two criteria, i.e. maximization of fundamental frequency and minimization of self-weight/load ratio, are utilized to optimize the manipulators. The NSGA-II (Fast Elitist Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms) is employed to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. The results indicate that simultaneous consideration of the joints and the links flexibility is very necessary for manipulators optimal design. Finally, several optimal combinations are provided and the effectiveness of the optimization is proved.

Abstract:Modern industries, e.g., semiconductor packaging, imposes increasing stringent requirement on equipment with very high acceleration and high precision. Traditionally, arm linkage and drive mechanism are first designed followed by control design. The integrated design method is proposed as a preferable technique of the traditional one. In this paper, a general framework of the integrated design method for a point-to-point control is presented. The dynamic model for a flexible planar two-link manipulator is derived by the finite element method. The PD control strategy is applied in the closed-loop system. The structural parameters and control parameters are optimized simultaneously by solving the integrated design problem. The differential evolution (DE) technique, a global optimization technique, is used to solve the optimal design problem. A simulation shows the integrated design method gives improved system performance.

Abstract:A flexible-link manipulator is a complex plant with high nonlinearity, and the equations of motion of a flexible-link manipulator have infinite dimensions. Hence, the control problems for a flexible-link manipulator are challenging tasks, seeking a control strategy which is independent of precise plant mathematical model is of practical meanings. In this paper a novel data-based fuzzy adaptive control strategy for a flexible-link manipulator is presented, and procedures for designing a fuzzy adaptive controller are described based on the collected experiment data. Good result is observed in the fuzzy adaptive control experiment of a flexible-link manipulator, the vibration suppression and precision positioning performance is achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, a dynamic hybrid control method is proposed for constrained flexible manipulators. Based on the assumed mode method, the authors derive the dynamical equations of a constrained two-link flexible manipulator. They then divide it into a slow subsystem and a fast subsystem via a singular perturbation method. For the slow subsystem, the authors present a hybrid position/force control method based on force feedback. For the fast subsystem, they design a controller based on optimal theory. Simulation results prove the effectiveness of this method

Abstract:To obtain the required articular velocities as lower as possible for the given kinematics of the moving platform, this paper focuses on this kind of articular velocities optimization of 6-DOF parallel manipulators. Based on the inverse kinematic analysis, the H∞ norm of the weighted Jacobian matrix was adopted as the performance index to minimize the articular velocities, and then the optimal design problem was formulated to find a manipulator geometry that minimized the global performance index with the constraints of the workspace and structural parameters limits. Since the optimal design problem is a constrained nonlinear optimization problem without explicit analytical expressions, the genetic algorithm was applied to numerically solve the problem. Simulation results indicate that the articular velocities of the optimal manipulators can be the minimum while the kinematic requirements of the moving platform are satisfied.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of the existence and structure of time-optimal control for models derived from Lagrange equations of motion of mechanical systems involving links. The condition which ensures the existence of time-optimal control is demonstrated. The study conducted in this paper involves a highly nonlinear mathematical model of a two-degree-of-freedom mechanical system. However, the procedure and the results presented in this paper can be extended to mechanical systems with any finite number of degrees of freedom.

Abstract:In this paper, a design procedure for simultaneous position and force control is developed, using singular perturbation method, for a two-link flexible manipulator in contact with an environment in this paper. The dynamic equation of a constrained two-link flexible manipulator is divided into slow subsystem and fast subsystem. The slow subsystem describes the movement and the force exerted on the object, which can be viewed as rigid manipulator, on the other hand the fast subsystem indicates the elastic vibration of the flexible manipulator. We designed an adaptive slow-controller for trajectory and force tracking control. For the fast subsystem, a robust optimal controller is presented to suppress the elastic vibration. Then by combining the slow controller and the fast controller, the composite control is constructed. Some results of numerical simulations are presented to show the effectiveness of this design procedure.
