Abstract:ConspectusFuel cells are among the cutting-edge energy technologies. Their commercial development is still hindered by noble platinum (Pt) catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode, which not only determine the energy conversion efficiency and service life but also are closely related to the cost and broad application of fuel cells. Given the bright and enormous future of fuel cells, ORR catalysts should possess highly efficient performance yet meet the acceptable Pt costs for large-scale application. Extensive efforts are concentrated on the optimization of Pt-based nanostructures and upgradation of functional carriers to achieve the low-cost and high-activity Pt-based catalysts. By improving the Pt utilization and accessible surface, reducing Pt consumption and catalyst costs, accelerating mass exchange and electron transfer, alleviating the corrosion and agglomeration of carriers and Pt, accompanying with the assistance of robust yet effective functional supports, the service level and life of Pt-based electrocatalysts would be significantly improved and fuel cells could get into commercial market covering broader applications.In this Account, we focus on the recent development of Pt-based catalysts to figure out the problems associated with ORR catalysts in fuel cells. Recent development of Pt-based catalysts is discussed in different stages: (1) multiscale development of Pt-based nanostructures; (2) multielement regulation over Pt-based alloy composition; (3) upgradation of carbon and noncarbon support architectures; (4) development of integrated Pt-based catalysts for fuel cells. Finally, we propose some future issues (such as reaction mechanism, dynamic evolutions, and structure-activity relationship) for Pt-based catalysts, which mainly involve the preparation strategy of Pt-integrated catalysts (combination of Pt nanostructures with nanocarbons), performance evaluation (standard measurement protocols, laboratory-level rotating disk electrode (RDE) measurements, application-level membrane electrode assembly (MEA) service test), advanced interpretation techniques (spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and in situ monitoring), and cutting-edge simulation/calculations and artificial intelligence (simulation, calculations, machine learning, big data screening). This Account calls for the comprehensive development of multiscale, multicomponent, and high-entropy Pt-based alloy nanostructures, and novel and stable carriers, which provide more available options for rational design of low-cost and high-performance Pt-integrated ORR catalysts. More importantly, it will give an in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanism, dynamic development, and structure-performance relationship for Pt-based catalysts in fuel cells and related energy technologies.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts plays a central role in realizing a broad range of fuel cell application. Palladium (Pd)-nonmetal nanostructures, as a special class of Pd-based alloys, have exhibited diversified advantages for fuel cell reactions. In this minireview, the most recent progress in the synthesis of Pd-nonmetal nanostructures and their applications in fuel cells are reviewed. First, the merits and advantages of Pd-nonmetal nanostructures are clarified. Next, strategies for enhancing the performance of Pd-nonmetal nanostructures are summarized by demonstrating the most typical examples. It is expected that this review will generate more research interest in the development of more advanced Pd-nonmetal nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are of considerable interest for direct chemical-to-electrical energy conversion and may represent an ultimate solution for mobile power supply. However, PEMFCs today are primarily limited by the sluggish kinetics of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which requires a significant amount of Pt-based catalyst with a substantial contribution to the overall cost. Hence, promoting the activity and stability of the needed catalyst and minimizing the amount of Pt loaded are central to reducing the cost of PEMFCs for commercial deployment. Considerable efforts have been devoted to improving the catalytic performance of Pt-based ORR catalysts, including the development of various Pt nanostructures with tunable sizes and chemical compositions, controlled shapes with selectively displayed crystallographic surfaces, tailored surface strains, surface doping, geometry engineering, and interface engineering. Herein, a brief introduction of some fundamentals of fuel cells and ORR catalysts with performance metrics is provided, followed by a detailed description of a series of strategies for pushing the limit of high-performance Pt-based catalysts. A brief perspective and new insights on the remaining challenges and future directions of Pt-based ORR catalysts for fuel cells are also presented.

Abstract:Although oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts have been extensively investigated and developed, there is a lack of clarity on catalysts that can balance high performance and low cost. Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals are of special interest in the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) due to their excellent ORR activity and stability. This review summarizes the wide range of applications of Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals in cathode catalysts for PEMFCs and their unique advantages in the field of ORR. Firstly, we introduce the fundamental understanding of Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals, and highlight the difficulties and countermeasures in their synthesis. Then, the progress of theoretical and experimental studies related to the ORR activity and stability of Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals in recent years are reviewed, especially the integrated strategies for enhancing the stability of ORR. Finally, the challenges faced by Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals are summarized and future research directions are proposed. In addition, numerous design ideas of Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals as ORR catalysts are summarized, aiming to promote further development of commercialization of PEMFC catalysts while fully understanding Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals.

Abstract:Fuel cells, whose energy source can be hydrogen, formic acid, methanol, or ethanol, have received considerable attention in recent years because of their environmentally friendly characteristics. A high Pt loading is often required to achieve a practical power density in fuel cells, thus leading to high costs and limited applications. Meanwhile, the high Pt loading promotes aggregation during cycling under harsh electrocatalytic conditions, which reduces the surface area of the catalyst and leads to a decrease in catalytic activity. The formation of alloy or intermetallic nanocrystals via the addition of non-precious metals along with precious metals is one strategy to effectively reduce the cost. Due to the electronic and geometric effects introduced by the non-precious metals, the catalytic performance of these bimetallic nanocrystals can be retained or even improved. Compared to the metallic alloy nanocrystals, the intermetallic ones are more stable in critical catalytic conditions. Due to their highly ordered structures, Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals are widely used as electrode materials for various electrocatalytic reactions in fuel cells, and they show high stability against oxidation and etching. PtCo intermetallic nanocrystals have attained performances that exceed the 2020 target of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for Pt activity and stability for the cathode reaction of fuel cells (oxygen reduction reaction). Decreasing the size of intermetallic compounds to the nanometer scale can significantly increase their active site densities due to the large specific surface area. However, the preparation of intermetallic nanocrystals is more complicated than that of alloys. Therefore, to further improve the electrocatalytic properties of intermetallic nanocrystals, an in-depth study of the factors affecting the electrocatalytic properties of nanocrystals is necessary. This review summarizes recent advances in Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals. First, we highlight the controlled synthesis strategies, including direct liquid-phase synthesis, the thermal annealing approach, and chemical vapor deposition. Of these strategies, direct liquid-phase synthesis is the most common approach to prepare the intermetallic nanocrystals. Second, the diverse potential applications of different electrocatalytic reactions are summarized. The reactions include the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), as well as the oxidation reactions of formic acid (FAOR), methanol (MOR), and ethanol (EtOR). Of these reactions, ORR is the most important, and it has been widely studied. Some advanced characterization techniques and machine learning research based on density functional theory (DFT) are also mentioned. Finally, the challenges and the future perspectives of intermetallic nanocrystals are outlined.
Engineering nanoporous and solid core-shell architectures of low-platinum alloy catalysts for high power density PEM fuel cells

Abstract:Low-platinum (Pt) alloy catalysts hold promising application in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis of proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Although significant progress has been made to boost the kinetic ORR mass activity at low current densities in liquid half-cells, little attention was paid to the performance of Pt-based catalysts in realistic PEMFCs particularly at high current densities for high power density, which remains poorly understood. In this paper, we show that, regardless of the kinetic mass activity at the low current density region, the high current density performance of the low-Pt alloy catalysts is dominantly controlled by the total Pt surface area, particularly in low-Pt-loading H2-air PEMFCs. To this end, we propose two different strategies to boost the specific Pt surface area, the post-15-nm dealloyed nanoporous architecture and the sub-5-nm solid core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) through fluidic-bed synthesis, both of which bring in comparably high mass activity and high Pt surface area for large-current-density performance. At medium current density, the dealloyed porous NPs provide substantially higher H2-air PEMFC performance compared to solid core-shell catalysts, despite their similar mass activity in liquid half-cells. Scanning transmission electron microscopy images combined with electron energy loss spectroscopic imaging evidence a previously unreported "semi-immersed nanoporous-Pt/ionomer" structure in contrast to a "fully-immersed core-shell-Pt/ionomer" structure, thus favoring O2 transport and improving the fuel cell performance. Our results provide new insights into the role of Pt nanostructures in concurrently optimizing the mass activity, Pt surface area and Pt/Nafion interface for high power density fuel cells.

Abstract:The past 30 years have seen progress in the development of Pt-based nanocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction, and some are now in production on a commercial basis and used for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) for automotives and other applications. Further improvements in catalytic activity are required for wider uptake of PEFCs, however. In laboratories, researchers have developed various catalysts that have much higher activities than commercial ones, and these state-of-the-art catalysts have potential to improve energy conversion efficiencies and reduce the usage of platinum in PEFCs. There are several technical issues that must be solved before they can be applied in fuel cell vehicles, which require a high power density and practical durability, as well as high efficiency. In this Review, the development history of Pt-based nanocatalysts and recent analytical studies are summarized to identify the origin of these technical issues. Promising strategies for overcoming those issues are also discussed.

Abstract:Low-noble metal electrocatalysts are attracting massive attention for anode and cathode reactions in fuel cells. Pt transition metal alloy nanostructures have demonstrated their advantages in high performance low-noble metal electrocatalysts due to synergy effects. The basic of designing this type of catalysts lies in understanding structure-performance correlation at the atom and electron level. Herein, design threads of highly active and durable Pt transition metal alloy nanocatalysts are summarized, with highlighting their synthetic realization. Microscopic and electron structure characterization methods and their prospects will be introduced. Recent progress will be discussed in high active and durable Pt transition metal alloy nanocatalysts towards oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation, with their structure-performance correlations illustrated. Lastly, an outlook will be given on promises and challenges in future developing of Pt transition metal alloy nanostructures towards fuel cells catalysis uses.

Various nanoparticles (NPs), with a range of size, shape, composition, and structure, have shown good potential to catalyze the sluggish cathodic and anodic reactions. In contrast to NPs, one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials such as nanowires (NWs), and nanotubes (NTs), exhibit additional advantages associated with their anisotropy, unique structure, and surface properties. The prominent characteristics of NWs and NTs include fewer lattice boundaries, a lower number of surface defect sites, and easier electron and mass transport for better electrocatalytic activity and lower vulnerability to dissolution, Ostwald ripening, and aggregation than Pt NPs for enhanced stability. An overview of recent advances in tuning 1D nanostructured Pt-based, Pd-based, or 1D metal-free nanomaterials as advanced electrocatalysts is provided here, for boosting fuel-cell reactions with high activity and stability, including the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). Low-Coordination Trimetallic PtFeCo Nanosaws for Practical Fuel Cells

Abstract:Developing high-performance catalysts for fuel cell catalysis is the most critical and challenging step for the commercialization of fuel cell technology. Here 1D trimetallic platinum-iron-cobalt nanosaws (Pt3 FeCo NSs) with low-coordination features are designed as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for practical fuel cell catalysis. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of Pt3 FeCo NSs (10.62 mA cm-2 and 4.66 A mg-1 Pt at 0.90 V) is more than 25-folds higher than that of the commercial Pt/C, even after 30 000 voltage cycles. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the strong inter-d-orbital electron transfer minimizes the ORR barrier with higher selectivity at robust valence states. The volcano correlation between the intrinsic structure featured with low-coordination Pt-sites and corresponding electronic activities is discovered, which guarantees high ORR activities. The Pt3 FeCo NSs located in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) also achieve very high peak power density (1800.6 mW cm-2 ) and competitive specific/mass activities (1.79 mA cm-2 and 0.79 A mg-1 Pt at 0.90 ViR-free cell voltage) as well as a long-term lifetime in specific H2 O2 medium for proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells, ranking top electrocatalysts reported to date for MEA. This work represents a class of multimetallic Pt-based nanocatalysts for practical fuel cells and beyond.

Abstract:Depositing Pt atoms on nanoscale two-dimensional (2D) substrates resulting in the exposure of specific crystal facets is an effective strategy for reducing the Pt content without compromising the catalytic property. Herein, the Pd/PtCu core/shell nanoplates exhibit substantially improved ORR and MOR mass activities, 8.3 and 3.3 times higher than those of commercial Pt. The present work highlights the important role of designing a 2D core/shell nano-structure in enhancing fuel cell electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Nanostructured Pd-based electrocatalysts have a large impact on cost, performance, and durability in the development of fuel cells. This review article provides an overview of recent advances in Pd-based electrocatalysts with a well-defined structure that can be applied for alcohol oxidation and oxygen reduction in an alkaline medium in direct alcohol fuel cells. These Pd-based catalytic materials include Pd electrocatalysts with different morphologies, monodisperse bimetallic Pd-based nanoparticles with different compositions and Pd-based nanoparticles with a well-controlled shape. Emphasis is placed on the atomic-level design of the nanoparticles' structure, and the origin of their electrochemical activity. The ways to enhance the electrocatalytic performance and design principles for Pd-based catalysts are discussed. This will help to shed light on the future development of non-Pt catalysts for fuel cells and accelerate the commercialization of fuel cell technology.

Abstract:Proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are one type of promising energy device with clean and high efficiency characteristics. The sluggish kinetic characteristics of cathode oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are still the bottleneck of the crucial skill. Until now, the exploitation of high ORR performance nanocatalysts has been the most effective strategy to the commercial of PEMFCs. Hence, more attention is paid to preciously tuning the surface/interface electronic structure and optimizing the intermediate species of adsorption energy of nanocatalysts to improve the ORR performance. Herein, performance-construction engineering is introduced in terms of surface strain, defect site (adsorption site/coordination number effect), and crystal facet for Pt-based catalysts. The physical synergy between Pt-based and carbon-based catalysts is also systematically reported focusing on ordered and mesoporous carbon, physical encapsulated carbon, metal carbides, carbon-containing polymer, etc. for ORR mainly in acidic environment. The understanding, construction, and application of the ORR active sites combined the carbon-based and platinum-based catalysts are deeply concluded in low-temperature PEMFCs, as well as part of high-temperature PEMFCs under acidic environment. The doping strategy and the strong interaction are highlighted introduced to enhance the intrinsic activity and the apparent activity. Furthermore, to study the complex active sites of catalysts and the corresponding compositional and structural evolution, the structure-activity relationships are further depicted coupled with the existing advanced in situ characterization technology. Finally, the potential prospects and challenges for the two types of electrocatalysts are summarized to shed a new light for the development of ORR catalysts in commercial applications.
PtFe Nanoalloys Supported on Fe‐Based Cubic Framework as Efficient Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract:The metal precursor confinement strategy enhances the dispersion of metal precursors on the surface of the support and restricts the size growth through electrostatic adsorption characteristics. The synergistic interaction between PtFe alloy nanoparticles and the FeNC support facilitates efficient and stable cathode catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. While Pt‐based binary alloys hold promising potential as cathode catalysts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) due to their desirable properties compared with monometallic counterparts, their weak interactions with carbon support make them challenging for practical cell implementation. Here, the PtFe alloys are uniformly deposited onto the surface of Fe‐Nx‐enriched nanocubes (FeNC) via surface confinement and internal vapor phase etching. The combined action of PtFe alloy and FeNC support acts as the electronic structure modulator resulting in the optimized intermediate adsorption (revealed by density function theory calculations), thereby boosting intrinsic activity to oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and simultaneously enhancing their interactions. The resultant Pt1Fe1 @ Fe0.5NC‐900 catalyst with a low Pt loading (0.065 mgPt cm−2) exhibits excellent mass activity and stability toward ORR in acidic media. When incorporated into a PEMFC, it delivers a superior peak power density of 1.05 W cm−2 and satisfactory stability performance.

Nitrogen Doped Titania Stabilized Pt/C Catalyst Via Selective Atomic Layer Deposition for Fuel Cell Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:The electrochemical dissolution of platinum (Pt) based nanoparticles and the consequent Pt active sites losses and particle aggregation have become a critical stability issue for the commercial proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Herein, nitrogen doped titania (N-TiO2) stabilized Pt low-coordinated sites on a commercial Pt/C catalyst is achieved by simply coupling selective atomic layer deposition of TiO2 and following nitrogen doping process. Selectively deposited N-TiO2 on Pt nanoparticles keeps the exposure of Pt sites on (111) facets and increases the reduction states of Pt, which results in 1.7 times improvement of mass activity than commercial Pt/ C. Besides, N-TiO2 stabilized commercial Pt/C catalyst exhibits outstanding durability enhancement, showing only a 14.0% loss of mass activity after 30,000 potential cycles of rotating disk electrode tests and 91.7% retention after durability tests in humid fuel cell condition. The shielding role of N-TiO2 could effectively inhibit the degradation of low-coordinated sites on Pt nanoparticles and maintain Pt size distribution, which is a promising strategy to prolong the lifetime of commercial Pt/C catalysts.
Atomically dispersed single iron sites for promoting Pt and Pt<sub>3</sub>Co fuel cell catalysts: performance and durability improvements

Abstract:Significantly reducing platinum group metal (PGM) loading while improving catalytic performance and durability is critical to accelerating proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) for transportation. Here we report an effective strategy to boost PGM catalysts through integrating PGM-free atomically-dispersed single metal active sites in the carbon support toward the cathode oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). We achieved uniform and fine Pt nanoparticle (NP) (similar to 2 nm) dispersion on an already highly ORR-active FeN4 site-rich carbon (FeN4-C). Furthermore, we developed an effective approach to preparing a well-dispersed and highly ordered L1(2) Pt3Co intermetallic nanoparticle catalyst on the FeN4-C support. DFT calculations predicted a synergistic interaction between Pt clusters and surrounding FeN4 sites through weakening O-2 adsorption by 0.15 eV on Pt sites and reducing activation energy to break O-O bonds, thereby enhancing the intrinsic activity of Pt. Experimentally, we verified the synergistic effect between Pt or Pt3Co NPs and FeN4 sites, leading to significantly enhanced ORR activity and stability. Especially in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with a low cathode Pt loading (0.1 mg(Pt) cm(-2)), the Pt/FeN4-C catalyst achieved a mass activity of 0.451 A mg(Pt)(-1) and retained 80% of the initial values after 30 000 voltage cycles (0.60 to 0.95 V), exceeding DOE 2020 targets. Furthermore, the Pt3Co/FeN4 catalyst achieved significantly enhanced performance and durability concerning initial mass activity (0.72 A mg(Pt)(-1)), power density (824 mW cm(-2) at 0.67 V), and stability (23 mV loss at 1.0 A cm(-2)). The approach to exploring the synergy between PGM and PGM-free Fe-N-C catalysts provides a new direction to design advanced catalysts for hydrogen fuel cells and various electrocatalysis processes.
