Abstract:Alkaline fuel cell technology has been reinvigorated since the recent rapid development and deployment of anion exchange membranes. Without the "acid-stability" requirement in low pH environments such as that of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, a much wider range of materials including noble metals, non-noble transition metals, and even metal-free electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media have been developed due to both thermodynamic and kinetic reasons. As compared to the rapidly increasing number of reports on the development of novel catalyst materials, the understanding of the reaction mechanisms of the various ORR electrocatalysts is quite insufficient, and the application and investigation in real alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AAEMFCs) is even scarcer. By reviewing the compositions, preparation methods, physiochemical properties and ORR performance of different categories of cathodic electrocatalysts that have emerged in the past few years, some common and intrinsic properties and factors that account for the superior activity of these materials may be extracted and summarized, which may further help to identify the reasons for the kinetic facility of the ORR in alkaline media. Some practical issues of utilization of the promising novel replacement materials for the state-of-the-art Pt-based cathodic electrocatalysts in AAEMFCs are pointed out. In addition to the progress on the development of novel materials with outstanding ORR activity, many and varied compositions and morphologies in one, two and three dimensions, scalable preparation technologies, low cost, and other unique properties, some feedback on the performance and especially the problems of their use as cathodes in AAEMFCs is urgently needed. Such feedback should provide guidelines for the design and manufacture of next-generation electrocatalysts and accelerate the application of AAEMFCs. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:Recent development of electrochemical technologies for renewable energy conversion and storage has enlightened the importance of tailoring the structures of catalytic materials at the nanoscale. In particular, the design and synthesis of nanocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have attracted great attention and been extensively studied. Remarkable progress has been made in improving the catalytic activity and stability of ORR catalysts by controlling and tuning the particle size, shape, composition and surface structures, as well as building up sophisticated composite nanostructures in core/shell and nanoporous configurations. Here a brief review is provided for the recent development of Pt-based nanocatalysts for the ORR. Instead of providing a complete list of the great amount of work reported in this topic, our focus is placed on fundamental understanding of the structure-property relationships of platinum-based nanomaterials, in particular alloy nanoparticles, in the electrochemical environment. The discussion is guided by correlations between well-defined extended surfaces and practical high-surface-area catalysts. Conclusions are made on challenges that remain and potential implications on other catalytic systems.

Abstract:Proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are one type of promising energy device with clean and high efficiency characteristics. The sluggish kinetic characteristics of cathode oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are still the bottleneck of the crucial skill. Until now, the exploitation of high ORR performance nanocatalysts has been the most effective strategy to the commercial of PEMFCs. Hence, more attention is paid to preciously tuning the surface/interface electronic structure and optimizing the intermediate species of adsorption energy of nanocatalysts to improve the ORR performance. Herein, performance-construction engineering is introduced in terms of surface strain, defect site (adsorption site/coordination number effect), and crystal facet for Pt-based catalysts. The physical synergy between Pt-based and carbon-based catalysts is also systematically reported focusing on ordered and mesoporous carbon, physical encapsulated carbon, metal carbides, carbon-containing polymer, etc. for ORR mainly in acidic environment. The understanding, construction, and application of the ORR active sites combined the carbon-based and platinum-based catalysts are deeply concluded in low-temperature PEMFCs, as well as part of high-temperature PEMFCs under acidic environment. The doping strategy and the strong interaction are highlighted introduced to enhance the intrinsic activity and the apparent activity. Furthermore, to study the complex active sites of catalysts and the corresponding compositional and structural evolution, the structure-activity relationships are further depicted coupled with the existing advanced in situ characterization technology. Finally, the potential prospects and challenges for the two types of electrocatalysts are summarized to shed a new light for the development of ORR catalysts in commercial applications.

Abstract:Proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are of considerable interest for direct chemical-to-electrical energy conversion and may represent an ultimate solution for mobile power supply. However, PEMFCs today are primarily limited by the sluggish kinetics of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which requires a significant amount of Pt-based catalyst with a substantial contribution to the overall cost. Hence, promoting the activity and stability of the needed catalyst and minimizing the amount of Pt loaded are central to reducing the cost of PEMFCs for commercial deployment. Considerable efforts have been devoted to improving the catalytic performance of Pt-based ORR catalysts, including the development of various Pt nanostructures with tunable sizes and chemical compositions, controlled shapes with selectively displayed crystallographic surfaces, tailored surface strains, surface doping, geometry engineering, and interface engineering. Herein, a brief introduction of some fundamentals of fuel cells and ORR catalysts with performance metrics is provided, followed by a detailed description of a series of strategies for pushing the limit of high-performance Pt-based catalysts. A brief perspective and new insights on the remaining challenges and future directions of Pt-based ORR catalysts for fuel cells are also presented.

Abstract:The high cost and poor reliability of cathodic electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which requires significant amounts of expensive and scarce platinum, obstructs the broad applications of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The principles of ORR and the reasons for the poor stability of Pt-based catalysts are reviewed. Moreover, this paper discusses and categorizes the strategies for enhancing the stability of Pt-based catalysts in fuel cells. More importantly, it highlights the recent progress of Pt-based stability toward ORR, including surface-doping, intermetallic structures, 1D/2D structures, rational design of support, etc. Finally, for atomic-level in-depth information on ORR catalysts in fuel cells, potential perspectives are suggested, such as large-scale preparation, advanced interpretation techniques, and advanced simulation. This review aims to provide valuable insights into the fundamental science and technical engineering for practical Pt-based ORR electrocatalysts in fuel cells.

Abstract:The global practical implementation of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) heavily relies on the advancement of highly effective platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). To achieve high ORR performance, electrocatalysts with highly accessible reactive surfaces are needed to promote the uncovering of active positions for easy mass transportation. In this critical review, we introduce different approaches for the emerging development of effective ORR electrocatalysts, which offer high activity and durability. The strategies, including morphological engineering, geometric configuration modification via supporting materials, alloys regulation, core-shell, and confinement engineering of single atom electrocatalysts (SAEs), are discussed in line with the goals and requirements of ORR performance enhancement. We review the ongoing development of Pt electrocatalysts based on the syntheses, nanoarchitecture, electrochemical performances, and stability. We eventually explore the obstacles and research directions on further developing more effective electrocatalysts.

Abstract:As one of the core reactions in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics is too sluggish to limit the performance of PEMFC. Platinum (Pt) based catalysts for promoting cathodic ORR not only determine the power and service life of fuel cells, but also are strongly associated with the cost. Inspired by the concept of high entropy alloy (HEA), many researchers have developed a series of Pt-based HEAs that can enhance the oxygen reduction activity, thereby increasing the utilization of Pt and reducing costs. In this account, the latest advances on HEA-based catalysts are systematically summarized, with focus on preparation method, material design and electrocatalytic performance. In addition, the challenges in this research field are also put forward, and a series of directions to be explored from the perspectives of component selection, size optimization, morphology control, hierarchical structure, and carrier up-gradation are proosed, which provides a design idea for a new generation of Pt-based HEA catalyst.

Abstract:One of the challenges in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is developing cost-effective, active and stable catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Platinum alloy-based catalyst materials have drawn great attention and been intensively investigated for the excellent activity property, with some of them already exceeding 2020 DOE target for the ORR activity. In the meantime, the electrochemical stability of these Pt alloys remains a challenge to be overcome. This review first highlights important understandings of ORR pathways and mechanisms and then proceeds to summarize recent research progresses on development of Pt alloy catalyst materials. Current obstacles in Pt alloy catalyst research are discussed, with the stability issue being specifically emphasized and a theoretical model being developed for depicting the stability property. This review also provides perspectives of future research directions in this field.

Abstract:Abstract Today, Pt/C catalysts are widely used in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The practical applications of PEMFCs still face many limitations in the preparation of advanced Pt‐based catalysts, including high cost, limited life‐time, and insufficient power density. A kinetically sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is primarily responsible for these issues. The development of advanced Pt‐based catalysts is crucial for solving these problems when the large‐scale application of PEMFCs is to be realized. Herein, we demonstrate the design principle of advanced Pt‐based catalysts with an emphasis on theoretical understandings to practical applications. Generally, three main strategies (including strain effect, electronic effect, and ensemble effect) that governing the initial activity of Pt‐based electrocatalysts are elaborated in detail in this review. Recent advanced Pt‐based ORR catalysts are summarized and we present representative achievements to further reveal the relationship of excellent ORR performance based on theoretical mechanisms. Then we focus on the preparation standards of membrane electrode assembles and testing protocols in practice. Finally, we predict the remaining challenges and present our perspectives with regards to design strategies for improving ORR performance of Pt‐based catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Over the past decade, substantial resources have been devoted to developing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The high cost and insufficient durability of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts are the main factors delaying the commercialization of high-efficiency fuel cells. Development of new catalysts with enhanced activity and durability would have a transformative effect on fuel cells and related energy devices. Catalyst design for ORR requires creation of catalytic sites with high ORR activity, but these sites must also have good accessibility for transport of reactants (oxygen, protons, electrons) and products (water). They must also have high durability, with lifetimes of up to 30,000 hours required for heavy duty vehicle applications. The most successful ORR catalysts for PEMFCs are PtM/C, i.e., nanoparticles of Pt alloys with a base metal (e.g., Co, Ni) dispersed on a nanostructured carbon catalyst support. Tuning properties of both the PtM nanoparticles and the C support is necessary to achieve high performance and durability. In recent years, intermetallic PtM nanoparticles in which Pt and M occupy distinct sites in a highly ordered structure have emerged as a leading candidate for PEMFC applications. However, development of nanostructured carbon supports with improved control of morphology and pore properties is needed to fully reap the benefits of advanced intermetallic nanoparticle catalysts. Herein, we report recent advances in development of both intermetallic PtM nanoparticles and nanostructured carbon supports with controlled morphology and pore seize distribution. By combining novel nanostructured materials synthesis with advanced characterization and fuel cell testing, we demonstrate a path to produce highly active catalysts with sufficient durability to meet the challenging requirements of heavy duty trucking applications.

Abstract:Although oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts have been extensively investigated and developed, there is a lack of clarity on catalysts that can balance high performance and low cost. Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals are of special interest in the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) due to their excellent ORR activity and stability. This review summarizes the wide range of applications of Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals in cathode catalysts for PEMFCs and their unique advantages in the field of ORR. Firstly, we introduce the fundamental understanding of Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals, and highlight the difficulties and countermeasures in their synthesis. Then, the progress of theoretical and experimental studies related to the ORR activity and stability of Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals in recent years are reviewed, especially the integrated strategies for enhancing the stability of ORR. Finally, the challenges faced by Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals are summarized and future research directions are proposed. Abstract:The development of ordered Pt-based intermetallic compounds is an effective way to optimize the electronic characteristics of Pt and its disordered alloys, inhibit the loss of transition metal elements, and prepare fuel cell catalysts with high activity and long-term durability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This paper reviews the structure–activity characteristics, research advances, problems, and improvements in Pt-based intermetallic compound fuel cell catalysts for the ORR. First, the structural characteristics and performance advantages of Pt-based intermetallic compounds are analyzed and explained. Second, starting with 3d transition metals such as Fe, Co, and Ni, whose research achievements are common, the preparation process and properties of Pt-based intermetallic compound catalysts for the ORR are introduced in detail according to element types. Third, in view of preparation problems, improvements in the preparation processes of Pt-based intermetallic compounds are also summarized in regard to four aspects: coating to control the crystal size, doping to promote ordering transformation, constructing a “Pt skin” to improve performance, and anchoring and confinement to enhance the interaction between the crystal and support. Finally, by analyzing the research status of Pt-based intermetallic compound catalysts for the ORR, prospective research directions are suggested.Graphical abstract

Abstract:In recent years, non-Pt-based ORR catalysts have been developing rapidly and have achieved performance comparable to or even surpassing Pt precious metal catalysts in specific reactions, offering new possibilities for Pt-based catalyst replacement and showing great promise for application. This paper reviews the recent research progress of non-Pt-based fuel cell ORR catalysts. The latest research progress of non-Pt-based ORR SACs (including single metal active site ORR SACs, multi-metal active site ORR SACs, and non-Pt-based noble metal catalyst ORR SACs), non-metallic ORR catalysts, alloy-based ORR catalysts, high-entropy alloy ORR catalysts, and other non-Pt-based fuel cell ORR catalysts are presented in detail. This paper discusses in detail the synthesis methods, characterization means, optimization of performance, and application prospects of these non-Pt-based ORR catalysts. In addition, this review details the excellent performance of these catalysts in terms of compositional and structural controllability, electrical conductivity, and chemical stability, as well as their ability to exhibit ORR activity comparable to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. This field is full of opportunities and challenges. In summary, non-Pt-based fuel cells show great potential in ORR. With the continuous improvement of preparation and characterization technologies, catalysts have broad application and market prospects. In addition, the development trend of non-precious metal fuel cell catalysts is reviewed.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are considered a promising power source for electric vehicles and stationary residential applications. However, current PEMFCs have several problems that require solutions, including high cost, insufficient power density, and limited performance durability. A kinetically sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is primarily responsible for these issues. The development of advanced Pt-based catalysts is crucial for solving these problems if the large-scale application of PEMFCs is to be realized. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the development of PtM alloy (M = Fe, Co, Ni, etc.) catalysts with an emphasis on ordered PtM intermetallic catalysts, which exhibit significantly enhanced activity and stability. In addition to exploring the intrinsic catalytic performance in traditional aqueous electrolytes via engineering nanostructures, morphologies, and crystallinity of PtM particles, we highlight recent efforts to study catalysts under real fuel cell environments by the membrane electrode assembly (MEA).

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has gradually been in the limelight in recent years because of its great application potential for fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Therefore, significant issues are increasingly focused on developing effective and economical ORR electrocatalysts. This review begins with the reaction mechanisms and theoretical calculations of ORR in acidic and alkaline media. The latest reports and challenges in ORR electrocatalysis are traced. Most importantly, the latest advances in the development of ORR electrocatalysts are presented in detail, including platinum group metal (PGM), transition metal, and carbon-based electrocatalysts with various nanostructures. Furthermore, the development prospects and challenges of ORR electrocatalysts are speculated and discussed. These insights would help to formulate the design guidelines for highly-active ORR electrocatalysts and affect future research to obtain new knowledge for ORR mechanisms.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells require oxygen reduction catalysts with high activity and stability. Pt based alloy materials are most widely applied ORR catalyst due to its high intrinsic activity, but usually suffer from rapid deactivation as a result of particle agglomeration, detachment, Ostwald ripening and/or Pt dissolution. Here we investigate the degradation of the PdPt alloys via in situ X-ray absorption fine structure, Δ μ analysis, identical location-electron microscopy and DFT calculations. We conclude that the origin of high activity and stability of the PdPt catalyst stems from the oxidation resistance of metallic Pt, forming mainly surface adsorbed O species at high potentials. Two stage degradation process are observed, showing an evolution of dynamic surface dependent ORR performance along with the deactivation process. The careful design of Pt alloy structure leads to controlled surface oxygen behaviours. This opens a new way to increase the lifespan of fuel cells and improve the Pt utilization efficiency.

Abstract:Exploring advanced electrocatalysts to accelerate the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is a promising route to alleviate the current challenges of fossil fuel exhaustion and environment pollution. Herein, a carbon-supported highly dispersed PtNi nanocatalyst (Pt0.61Ni/C) with low platinum content of 2.76 wt % was prepared simply based on galvanic replacement for a high-efficiency ORR process. It presents a mass activity of times of the conventional Pt-based catalyst at 0.9 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) and a remarkable durability and methanol tolerance. The acidic fuel cell with such cathode catalyst (Pt0.61Ni/C) presents a striking performance with maximum power density up to 1.1 W cm(-2) at 80 degrees C. Due to the extremely low platinum loading in the whole fuel cell, its Pt utilization (0.093 g(Pt) kW(-1)) is the highest reported ever in H-2/O-2 fuel cells. Such impressive performance of Pt0.61Ni/C makes the obtained Pt0.61Ni/C catalyst a very promising alternative to conventional Pt-based catalysts for their large-scale application in future.
The Recent Progress of Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts Used at Fuel Cell Level

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are gaining significant interest as an attractive substitute for traditional fuel cells, with higher energy density, lower environmental pollution, and better operation efficiency. However, the cathode reaction, i.e., the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), is widely proved to be inefficient, and therefore an obstacle to the widespread development of PEMFCs. The requirement for affordable highly-efficient ORR catalysts is extremely urgent to be met, especially at fuel cell level. Unfortunately, most previous reports focus on the ORR performance at rotating disk electrodes (RDE) level instead of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) level, making it harder to evaluate ORR catalysts operating under real vehicle conditions. Obviously, it is extremely necessary to develop an in-depth understanding of the structure-activity relationship of highly-efficient ORR catalysts applied at MEA level. In this work, an overview of the latest advances in ORR catalysts is provided with an emphasis on their performance at MEA level, hoping to cover the novel and systemic insights for innovative and efficient ORR catalyst design and applications in PEMFCs. This paper reviews the latest progress of ORR electrocatalysts at the MEA or PEMFC level from the aspects of noble metal-based catalysts, non-noble metal-based catalysts, carbon-based catalysts, and single-atom catalysts, aiming to provide in-depth insights into the design of ORR catalysts for hydrogen fuel cells in practical applications.image

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been considered by many countries and enterprises because of their cleanness and efficiency. However, due to their high cost and low platinum utilization rate, the commercialization process of PEMFC is severely limited. The cathode catalyst layer (CCL) plays an important role in manipulating the performance and lifespan of PEMFCs, which makes them one of the most significant research focuses in this community. In the CCL, the intrinsic activity and stability of the catalysts determine the performance and lifetime of the catalyst layer. In this paper, the composition and working principle of the PEMFC and cathode catalyst layer are briefly introduced, focusing on Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs). The research progress of Pt-based catalysts in the past five years is particularly reviewed, mainly concentrating on the development status of emerging Pt-based catalysts which are popular in the current research field, including novel concepts like phase regulation (intermetallic alloys and high-entropy alloys), interface engineering (coupled low-Pt/Pt-free catalysts), and single-atom catalysts. Finally, the future research and development directions of Pt-based ORR catalysts are summarized and prospected.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been extensively investigated as an invariable cathode reaction and the main rate-determining step in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). To date, various PtM (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu)-based nanocrystals with size, shape, composition and structure control have shown the great potential to catalyze this sluggish cathodic reaction. Recent design principles for engineering PtM (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu)-based multimetallic nanostructures to make them highly active and stable for ORR are reviewed. After a simple description of the ORR mechanism and a general introduction to recent important progress in the controlled synthesis of monodisperse PtM nanoparticles (NPs) for improving the ORR activity, current efforts and achievements in synthetically tuning the catalytically performance of PtM-based multimetallic nanocrystals for getting highly efficient catalysts to enhance both the activity and stability of ORR are highlighted. These typical highly active and stable catalysts include new structure-controlled PtM (M = Fe, Co) NPs, PtM (M = Fe, Cu)-based core/shell NPs, novel PtFe and PtNi-based nanowires (NWs), three-dimensional (3D) Pt3Ni nanoframes, graphene-supported PtFe NPs, and surface-doped PtNi octahedra. These recently developed Pt-based multimetallic nanocrystals with particular characteristics will offer new opportunities to achieve the real-world fuel cell-based electronic vehicle application.
