Abstract:The fundamental understanding of electrochemistry urges accurate knowledge of all interfacial properties at the molecular level, but the retrieval of such information is a real challenge. Optical spectroscopies facilitated by surface plasmon enhancement can shed light on this field, yet past studies relied on either highly inhomogeneous "hot spots" or planar plasmon modes with limited enhancement. Here we report an in situ sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy scheme using plasmonic nanogratings, which enable strong, coherent surface plasmon excitation even on planar electrodes. With two classical reactions, the gold oxidation and pyridine adsorption in water, we demonstrate the realization of coherent vibrational spectroscopy in the strong absorption region, revealing the polar orientation and ordering of interfacial species that are crucial toward the mechanistic understanding of electrochemical phenomena.

Abstract:High-resolution laser-induced fluorescence spectrum of a jet-cooled NiI molecule has been recorded in the near infrared and visible regions. The NiI molecule was produced by reacting laser-ablated nickel atom and methyl iodide (CH3I). Three electronic states have been identified that include the X 2Δ5/2 and two low-lying [13.9] 2Π3/2 and [14.6] 2Δ5/2 excited states. Molecular transition bands (v′,0) of the [13.9] 2Π3/2−X 2Δ5/2 system with v′=0, 4–9, and the (v′,0) bands of the [14.6] 2Δ5/2−X 2Δ5/2 system with v′=0–6 were observed and analyzed. Spectra of isotopic molecules confirmed the assignment of vibrational quantum number of the observed bands. Least squares fit of rotational transition lines yielded accurate molecular constants for the states studied. The bond length r0 measured for the X 2Δ5/2 is 2.3479 Å and the equilibrium bond length, re, for the [13.9] 2Π3/2 and [14.6] 2Δ5/2 are, respectively, 2.4834 and 2.5081 Å. With the use of a molecular orbital energy level diagram, we have examined the electronic configurations that give rise to the X 2Π3/2 ground state for NiF, NiCl, and NiBr, but the X 2Δ5/2 state for NiI. This work represents the first spectroscopic study of the NiI molecule.

Abstract:Infrared photodissociation spectra are measured for mass selected cation complexes with a chemical formula [MC7O6](+) (M = Fe, Co, Ni) formed via pulsed laser evaporation of metal target in expansions of helium gas seeded by CO. The geometries of the complexes are determined by comparison of the experimental spectra with the simulated spectra from density functional calculations. All of these complexes are identified to have [M(CO)(4)(C3O2)](+) structures involving a carbon suboxide ligand, which binds the metal center in an eta(1) fashion. The antisymmetric CO stretching vibration of C3O2 is slightly red-shifted upon coordination. The donor-acceptor bonding interactions between C3O2 and the metal centers are analyzed using the EDA-NOCV method. The results show that M <- C3O2 sigma donation is stronger than the M -> C3O2 pi back-donation in these cation complexes.

Abstract:Heteronuclear transition metal carbonyl cluster cations FeM(CO)8(+) (M = Co, Ni and Cu) and MCu(CO)7(+) (M = Co and Ni) are produced via a laser vaporization supersonic cluster ion source in the gas phase, which are each mass-selected and studied by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching frequency region. Their geometric and electronic structures are established by comparison of the experimental spectra with those derived from density functional theoretical calculations. The FeM(CO)8(+) (M = Co, Ni, Cu) complexes are determined to have eclipsed (CO)5Fe-M(CO)3(+) structures, and the MCu(CO)7(+) (M = Co, Ni) ions are characterized to have staggered (CO)4M-Cu(CO)3(+) structures. Natural bonding orbital analysis indicates that the positive charge is mainly distributed on the M(CO)3 fragment. The metal-metal interaction involves an σ-type (OC)4,5M→M(CO)3(+) dative bonding.

Abstract:The carbon chain cations, HC2n+1O+ (n = 2–5), are produced via pulsed laser vaporization of a graphite target in supersonic expansions containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The infrared spectra are measured via mass-selected infrared photodissociation spectroscopy of the CO “tagged” [HC2n+1O·CO]+ cation complexes in the 1600-3500 cm−1 region. The geometries and electronic ground states of these cation complexes are determined by their infrared spectra compared to the predications of theoretical calculations. All of the HC2n+1O+ (n = 2–5) core cations are characterized to be linear carbon chain derivatives terminated by hydrogen and oxygen, which have the closed-shell singlet ground states with polyyne-like carbon chain structures.

Abstract:Co+(C2H2)n (n = 1-6) complexes produced with laser vaporization in a supersonic molecular beam are studied with infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and computational chemistry. Infrared spectra are measured in the C-H stretching region using the method of tagging with argon atoms to enhance the photodissociation yields. C-H stretch vibrations for all clusters studied are shifted to lower frequencies than those of the well-known acetylene vibrations from ligand → metal charge transfer interactions. The magnitude of the red shifts decreases in the larger clusters as the interaction is distributed over more ligands. Computational studies identify various unreacted complexes with individual acetylene ligands in cation-π bonding configurations as well as reacted isomers in which ligand coupling reactions have taken place. Infrared spectra are consistent only with unreacted structures, even though the formation of reacted structures such as the metal ion-benzene complex is highly exothermic. Large activation barriers are predicted by theory along the reaction coordinates for the n = 2 and 3 complexes, which inhibit reactions in these smaller clusters, and this situation is presumed to persist in larger clusters.

Abstract:Laser-ablated late transition metal atoms Cr through Ni react with CO2 molecules to give the insertion products OMCO, which have been isolated in solid argon. The insertion OMCO- molecular anions (Cr through Cu) were formed by electron capture and/or reaction with CO2-, and the addition MCO2- anions (M = Co, Ni, Cu) were produced by direct react:ion with CO2-. The excellent agreement between the observed frequencies and isotopic frequency ratios with those calculated by density functional theory supports these assignments.

Abstract:Laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectra of jet-cooled NiS molecules were recorded in the energy range of 12200–13550 cm−1. Four vibronic bands with rotational structure have been observed and assigned to the [12.4]3∑0−-X3∑0− transition progression. The relevant rotational constants, significant isotopic shifts, and (equilibrium) molecular parameters have been determined. In addition, the lifetimes of the observed bands have also been measured.

Abstract:Laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectra of NiO have been recorded in the wavelength region of 510–650 nm under supersonic molecular beam conditions. More than fifty bands have been observed and rotationally analyzed to determine the molecular constants. The excited states exhibit highly irregular variations in terms of isotopic shifts, vibrational intervals, and rotational constants. Twenty-six bands attributed to [Ω=0, 1]−X3Σ0− transitions have been tentatively grouped into five vibrational progressions. Furthermore, dispersed fluorescence and lifetimes of the strong bands have also been measured.

Abstract:Infrared spectra of mass-selected homoleptic nickel carbonyl cluster cations including dinuclear Ni2(CO)7(+) and Ni2(CO)8(+), trinuclear Ni3(CO)9(+) and tetranuclear Ni4(CO)11(+) are measured via infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching frequency region. The structures are established by comparison of the experimental spectra with simulated spectra derived from density functional calculations. The Ni2(CO)7(+) cation is characterized to have an unbridged asymmetric (OC)4Ni-Ni(CO)3(+) structure with a Ni-Ni single bond. The Ni2(CO)8(+) cation has a Ni-Ni half-bonded D3d structure with both nickel centers exhibiting an 18-electron configuration. The trinuclear Ni3(CO)9(+) cluster cation is determined to have an open chain like (OC)4Ni-NiCO-Ni(CO)4 structure. The tetranuclear Ni4(CO)11(+) cluster cation is determined to have a tetrahedral structure with two-center and three-center bridge-bonded carbonyl units. These nickel carbonyl cluster cations all involve trigonal pyramid like Ni(CO)4 building blocks that satisfy the 18-electron configuration of the nickel centers.

Abstract:Fe-Zn and Co-Zn heteronuclear carbonyl cation complexes are produced via a laser vaporization supersonic cluster source in the gas phase. The dinuclear FeZn(CO)(5)(+) and CoZn(CO)(7)(+) cation complexes are observed to be the most intense heterodinuclear carbonyl cation species in the mass spectra. The infrared spectra are obtained via mass selection and infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching frequency region. Their geometric and electronic structures are assigned with the support of density functional calculations. The FeZn(CO)(5)(+) complex is determined to have a (OC)(5)Fe-Zn structure with a Fe-Zn half bond. The CoZn(CO)(7)(+) ion is established to have a staggered (OC)(4)Co-Zn(CO)(3) structure involving a Co-Zn sigma single bond.

Abstract:3, 5, and 12-nm Co nanoparticles were synthesized via thermo-decomposition. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) were used to probe the structures of these nanoparticles. Simulations were carried out to compare the EXAFS profiles of three different crystalline phases of Co. The results of EXAFS and XANES suggested that the reactivity of these nanoparticles towards their environment is inversely proportional to their size. Sharp decreases in the amplitude of EXAFS of these nanoparticles were observed, which could be attributed to the existence of the disorder in those crystalline nanostructures.

Abstract:We present measurements of the optical spectra on Na0.7CoO2 single crystals. The optical conductivity shows two broad interband transition peaks at 1.6 eV and 3.1 eV, and a weak midinfrared peak at 0.4 eV. The intraband response of conducting carriers is different from that of a simple Drude metal. A peak at low but finite frequency is observed, which shifts to higher frequencies with increasing temperature, even though the dc resistivity is metallic. The origin of the interband transitions and the low-frequency charge dynamics have been discussed and compared with other experiments.

Abstract:Laser ablation of transition metal targets with concurrent 4 K codeposition of CO2/Ne mixtures produces metal independent infrared absorptions at 1658.2 and 1421.6 cm(-1) due to CO2- and CO2+. Additional metal independent absorptions at 2130.8 and 1274.4 cm(-1), and at 1852.4, 1189.2, and 679.2 cm(-1) increase on annealing to 8 K. Isotopic substitution shows that both band sets involve two equivalent CO2 subunits. Based on density functional theory calculations of structures and vibrational frequencies, the 2130.8 and 1274.4 cm(-1) bands are assigned to the C2O4+ cation with C-2h symmetry, and the 1852.4, 1189.2, and 679.2 cm(-1) bands are assigned to the C2O4+ anion with D-2d symmetry. Evidence is also obtained for (CO2-)(CO2)(x)(x = 1,2) anion complexes. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The infrared spectra of mass-selected Ni(O-2)n(+) (n = 2-4) and their argon-tagged complexes are measured by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the gas phase. The experimental spectra provide distinctive patterns allowing the determination of their geometric and electronic structures by comparison with the simulated vibrational spectra from density functional theory calculations. The [Ni(O-2)(2)Ar-2](+) cation complex was determined to have D(2)h symmetry involving a Ni(O-2)(2)(+) core ion with two equivalent superoxide ligands side-on bound to a Ni3+ cation center. The higher Ni(O-2)(3)(+) and Ni(O-2)(4)(+) cation complexes were determined to have structures with a chemically bound Ni(O-2)(2)(+) core ion that is weakly coordinated by neutral O-2 molecule(s).

Abstract:Nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements on NiO and CoO show that strong dipole-forbidden d-d excitations appear within the Mott gap at large wave vectors. These dominant excitations are highly anisotropic, and have [001] nodal directions for NiO. Theoretical analyses based on a novel, energy-resolved Wannier function (within the local density approximation+Hubbard U) show that the anisotropy reflects the local exciton wave functions and local point-group symmetry. The sensitivity to weak symmetry breaking in particle-hole wave functions suggests a wide application to strongly correlated systems.

Abstract:Dynamic processes of CO2 are experimentally studied in intense femtosecond laser fields with laser intensity varying from 1 1013 W/cm2 to 6 1014 W/cm2. When the laser intensity is below the ionization threshold, a coherent rotational wave-packet is formed for CO2 at room temperature through nonadiabatic rotational excitation. The evolution of the wave-packet leads to transient alignment. The field-free alignment revives periodically after the laser pulse is over. The revival structure can be modified by a second laser pulse for the rotational wave-packet through precisely adjusting the time delays between the two laser pulses. When the laser intensity excesses the ionization threshold, ionization and Coulomb explosion occur. The atomic ions Cm+ (m = 13) and On+ (n = 13) observed in the experiment exhibit highly anisotropic angular distributions relative to the laser polarization. Using two linearly polarized laser pulses with crossed polarization, we conclude that the anisotropic angular distribution results from dynamic alignment, in which the rising edge of the laser pulse aligns the neutral CO2 along the laser polarization direction prior to ionization.
