Abstract:Self-assembled manganese cobalt oxide (Mn0.5Co2.5O4) nanofibers sandwiched in graphene sheets (Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G) are successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal treatment and annealing process. Owning to the unique sandwich-like structures, rich active sites, and boosted electrical conductivity, Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G composite demonstrates superior electrochemical performance for potential supercapacitors. In a three-electrode system, it exhibits excellent cycling stability with a specific capacitance retention of 93.8% after 10 000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g(-1,) and achieves specific capacitances of 617 and 434 F g(-1) at the ultrahigh current densities of 30 and 40 A g(-1), respectively. For an asymmetric supercapacitor of Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G/AC, high energy densities of 36.8 and 13.6 W h kg(-1) are also achieved at power densities of 147.3 and 3755.8 W kg(-1), respectively. It is believed that the synthesized Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G composite can be a promising electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors, and the present synthetic strategy can be further extended for designing many other functional composites with desirable nanostructures and performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we described a simple two–step method for preparing needle-like CoNi2S4/CNT/graphene nanocomposite with robust connection among its ternary components. The prepared CoNi2S4/CNT/graphene nanocomposite has been thoroughly characterized by spectroscopic (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. Microscopy techniques (scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy) were employed to probe the morphological structures. The electrochemical properties of the as-prepared 3D architectures were investigated with three and two-electrode systems. In addition to its high specific capacitance (710Fg−1 at 20Ag−1), after charging–discharging for 2000 cycles, the electrode still maintained the capacity retention of about 82%. When used as the active electrode material for supercapacitors, the fabricated CoNi2S4–g–CNT nanostructure exhibited excellent specific capacitance and good rate capability, making it a promising candidate for next-generation supercapacitors.

Abstract:Three dimensional (3D) hierarchical network configurations are composed of NiCo2S4 nanotube @Ni-Mn layered double hydroxide (LDH) arrays in situ grown on graphene sponge. The 3D graphene sponge with robust hierarchical porosity suitable for as a basal growth has been obtained from a colloidal dispersion of graphene oxide using a simple directional freeze-drying technique. The high conductive NiCo2S4 nanotube arrays grown on 3D graphene shows excellent pseudocapacity and good conductive support for high-performance Ni-Mn LDH. The 3D NiCo2S4@Ni-Mn LDH/GS shows a high specific capacitance (C-sp) 1740 mF cm(-2) at 1 mA cm(-2), even at 10 mA cm(-2), 1267.9 mF cm(-2) maintained. This high-performance composite electrode proposes a new and feasible general pathway as 3D electrode configuration for energy storage devices.

Abstract:Transition-metal selenide electrodes have recently attracted increasing interest in supercapacitors resulting from their superior electrochemical performance, lower-cost, and environmental friendliness. Herein, we report a novel bimetallic Ni-Co selenide nanosheet/three-dimensional (3D) graphene/nickel foam binder-free electrode (NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs/3D G/NF) prepared via chemical vapor deposition followed by a simple two-step hydrothermal process in this paper. The NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs array vertically on 3D G/NF with a uniform and stable structure without using any chemical binders. This novel electrode is flexible, highly conductive, and exhibits an excellent specific capacitance of ∼742.4 F g-1 at 1 mA cm-2. Furthermore, with a 10-fold increase to 10 mA cm-2, it still retains 471.78 F g-1 and a high cycling stability of ∼83.8% of the initial retention after 1000 cycles at 10 mA cm-2, demonstrating that NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs/3D G/NF binder-free electrode has potential for energy storage application in high-performance supercapacitor fields.
Facile Synthesis of NiCo2S4/CNTs Nanocomposites for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

Abstract:Herein, porous NiCo2S4/CNTs nanocomposites were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method followed by the sulphurization process using different sulfide sources. By comparing two different sulfur sources, the samples using thioacetamide as sulfide source delivered more remarkable electrochemical performance with a high specific capacitance of 1765 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and an admirable cycling stability with capacitance retention of 71.7% at a high current density of 10 A g−1 after 5000 cycles in 2 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device was successfully fabricated with the NiCo2S4/CNTs electrode as the positive electrode and graphene as the negative electrode. The device provided a maximum energy density of 29.44 W h kg−1 at a power density of 812 W kg−1. Even at a high power density of 8006 W kg−1, the energy density still reaches 16.68 W h kg−1. Moreover, the ASC presents 89.8% specific capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at 5 A g−1. These results reveal its great potential for supercapacitors in electrochemical energy storage field.
Hierarchical 3D All-Carbon Composite Structure Modified with N-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots for High-Performance Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have shown enormous potential for portable electronic devices. Herein, hierarchical 3D all-carbon electrode materials are prepared by assembling N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) on carbonized MOF materials (cZIF-8) interweaved with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors. In this ternary electrode, cZIF-8 provides a large accessible surface area, CNTs act as the electrical conductive network, and N-GQDs serve as highly pseudocapactive materials. Due to the synergistic effect and hierarchical assembly of these components, N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT electrodes exhibit a high specific capacitance of 540 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) in a 1 m H2SO4 electrolyte and excellent cycle stability with 90.9% capacity retention over 8000 cycles. The assembled supercapacitor possesses an energy density of 18.75 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 108.7 W kg(-1). Meanwhile, three supercapacitors connected in series can power light-emitting diodes for 20 min. All-solid-state N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT flexible supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 14 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 89.3 W kg(-1), while the capacitance retention after 5000 cycles reaches 82%. This work provides an effective way to construct novel electrode materials with high energy storage density as well as good cycling performance and power density for high-performance energy storage devices via the rational design.

Abstract:One of the most challenging issues in developing supercapacitor technology is the rational design and synthesis of active electrode materials, at the nanoscale, with favorable morphologies, reasonable porous structure, and excellent conductivity. By transforming a two-dimensional (2D) graphene sheet into a crumpled ball shape, a novel three-dimensional (3D) graphene structure with a large surface area and aggregation-resistant properties has been proposed as an active material in supercapacitors to address the issues associated with the restacking of 2D graphene sheets. To further improve the mass transport/electron transfer and address the issue of limited contact spots between the crumpled graphene balls (CGBs) or between the CGBs and the current collector, we report here a unique hierarchical nanohybrid with porous carbon nanotube (CNT)-networks decorated CGBs (p-CNTn/CGBs), which not only greatly improves the affinity for bridging the active material and the current collector but also maintains favorable features for supercapacitor applications, such as a large surface area, 3D hierarchical nanostructure, excellent electrical conductivity, and outstanding aggregation-resistance. The performance established on the p-CNTn/CGBs far exceeded the bare CGB and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) counterparts in terms of specific capacitance and rate capabilities.

Abstract:Three-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride functionalized graphene composites (g-C3N4@G) were grown using a simple one-step hydrothermal reduction. The super-capacitive properties of the as-formed 3D g-C3N4@G were evaluated in a symmetrical supercapacitor. It is found that the 3D g-C3N4@G exhibit a high specific capacitance of 264 F g(-1) and good cycling stability.

Abstract:Recently, carbon nanotubes (CNT)-based interconnected architectures exhibit promising prospects in supercapacitors due to their flexibility and high electrical conductivity. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected network structure combined with conductive carbon nanotubes interpenetrating MOFs-derived Co-Ni-S composite spheres (Co-Ni-S/CNTs) was synthesized. Such 3D interconnected architecture significantly leads to a favorable electronic structure, fast charge-transfer capacity, and more pseudocapacitive. The Co-Ni-S/CNTs-based hybrid electrode exhibits an extraordinary specific capacitance of 540.6C g−1 at 1 A g−1 and competitive rate performance (capacity retention rate of 69.9% when the current density increases to 10 times). Subsequently, a hybrid supercapacitor is assembled using Co-Ni-S/CNTs as the positive electrode and commercial activated carbon as negative electrode. The device delivers a high energy density of 63.5 W h kg−1 at 800 W kg−1 and keeps 83.0% initial capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. The encouraging performances demonstrate the significant contribution of the 3D interconnected architecture for the future energy storage.

Abstract:In supercapacitor applications, the energy storage capacitance and rate performance of graphene are severely weakened by the restacking of graphene sheets, which is a great challenge to overcome for fully exploring its supercapacitive properties. If one of the current strategies for promoting the ion diffusion of graphene is employed alone, only a limited improvement of supercapacitive performance of graphene can be achieved. Here, we combine three carbon allotropes into an all-carbon structure, and improve the ion diffusion and mitigate graphene restacking using combination of three strategies, including creating in-plane holes, self-assembling into three-dimensional (3D) structure, and adding spacers between graphene sheets. Thus a 3D hybrid-structured ternary-carbon (holey graphene/carbon nanotube/hollow carbon nano-onion, denoted as HG-CNT-HCNO) is synthesized as supercapacitor electrode material through a facile and effective one-step hydrothermal method. The synergistic effect of strategies and the different dimensional carbon allotropes endows the 3D structure with hierarchical porous structure, improved electron/ion transport, and increased energy storage sites. Consequently, the HG-CNT-HCNO exhibits high specific capacitance of 236.5 F g(-1), ultrahigh rate capability (capacitance retention of 97.9% as the current density increases from 0.5 to 40 A g(-1)), and high electrochemical stability. Furthermore, the device with organic electrolyte shows high energy and power densities of 71.3 Wh kg(-1) and 7.5 kW kg(-1), respectively, demonstrating a high energy storage performance. The ternary-carbon structure may open up a new avenue for electrode performance optimization in the future energy storage systems by involving different dimensional carbon nanomaterials.
Constructing nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots embedded in CNT supported layered (Ni0.5Co0.5)3V2O8 self-supporting film for high-performance supercapacitor

Abstract:To improve the electrochemical performance of positive electrode materials, constructing graded nanostructures is a worthwhile approach. This study successfully synthesized nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQD) modified (Ni0.5Co0.5)3V2O8 on a carbon nanotube (CNT) substrate to construct self-supporting electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors. The (Ni0.5Co0.5)3V2O8 nanosheets were successfully wrapped onto the CNT surface through a solution impregnation process, which increased the specific surface area and interlayer spacing of the material. Furthermore, the electrochemical properties of the electrode material underwent significant enhancement due to the synergistic interplay between metal ions and the numerous redox centers. The embedding of the NGQD enriched the materials with active sites and further improved its specific capacity without compromising the structure intergrity of the layer configuration. Using CNT as the substrate ensured the self-supporting nature of the electrode. Consequently, the (Ni0.5Co0.5)3V2O8/NGQD@CNT composite exhibits an ultra-high specific capacitance of 3018.2 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and 2332 F g-1 at 10 A g-1. The asymmetric supercapacitor constructed with (Ni0.5Co0.5)3V2O8/NGQD@CNT and activated carbon (AC) presented an impressive energy density of 160.2 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 800 W kg-1. After 8000 charge-discharge cycles, the capacity retention rate was 78.5 %, with a Coulo mbic efficiency consistently above 98 %.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) NiCo2O4 nanosheet-coated three-dimensional graphene network (3DGN), which is then used as an electrode for high-rate, long-cycle-life supercapacitors. Using the 3DGN and nanoporous nanosheets, an ultrahigh specific capacitance (2173 F g(-1) at 6 A g(-1)), excellent rate capability (954 F g(-1) at 200 A g(-1)) and superior long-term cycling performance (94% capacitance retention after 14 000 cycles at 100 A g(-1)) are achieved.

Abstract:A hybrid nanocomposite (NCO-CNF) with 3D hierarchical porous nickel cobalt-oxide (NCO) nanosheets structure was successfully constructed on the surface of the N-doped carbon nanofiber (CNF) through the combination of electrospinning, hydrothermal and heat-treatment process, where the CNF as a structural scaffold and excellent conductor to improve the conduction of electrons and effectively prevent aggregation of NCO-CNF nanosheets. Thus, generating a synergistic electrochemical enhancement through maximize utilization of two components and strong coupling interaction between 1D CNF and 2D NCO nanosheets. The resultant NCO-CNF delivered outstanding specific capacitance as high as 343 F g−1 in three electrode system. Furthermore, the obtained NCO-CNF can as the positive electrode while the CNF serves as the negative electrode to assemble the solid asymmetric supercapacitor and the energy density of NCO-CNF//CNF is up to 44.8 Wh kg−1 (44.8 μWh cm−2). This work leaves more strategies for utilizing effectively 2D nanomaterials and carbon fiber.

Abstract:We present a simple one-step solvothermal method for in situ growth of nickel cobalt sulfide (NiCo2S4) nanoparticles on the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets and carbon nanotube (CNT) without adding any surfactant. The NiCo2S4@rGO@CNT structure was fabricated successfully with the hydrothermal method. When serving as an electrochemical supercapacitor electrode material, the NiCo2S4@rGO@CNT delivers a highly improved specific capacitance of 1242.51 F g(-1) at the current density of 2.0 A g(-1), as compared with that of pure NiCo2S4 (519.51 F g(-1)) counterpart. Its durability is mainly owing to the synergistic effects of NiCo2S4, rGO and CNT, further presenting potential applications in energy storage.

Abstract:MnO2/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)–embedded carbon nanofibers (CNFs) nanocomposites (MnO2/CNTs–CNFs) have been prepared using electrospinning and in situ redox deposition technique. The as-prepared nanocomposites were directly employed as freestanding electrodes to evaluate the electrochemical properties. Results showed that the nanoscopic MnO2 deposits were incorporated uniformly into the CNTs–embedded CNFs network structure, which hold a great promise for high-performance supercapacitor applications. Compared to the pure CNFs substrate, the improved electric conductivity of CNTs–embedded CNFs substrate enabled a better utilization of MnO2 coating, thus resulting in higher specific capacitance (374F/g) and better rate capability (53.4%). Excellent capacitance retention of 94% of the initial capacitance after 1000cycles was achieved on the freestanding MnO2/CNTs–CNFs nanocomposites electrode. The specific capacitance was found to increase significantly with the increase in the electrolyte temperature, which offered an insight into the practical supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:In this study, a pulse-mode electrochemical deposition technique was employed to deposit dense and homogeneous Ni nanoparticles on the three-dimensional graphene network (3DGN) as the catalysts for growing the vertical aligned one-dimensional carbon nanofibers (CNFs) to fabricate the full-carbon hybrid nanoarchitecture of CNFs/3DGN for the supercapacitors. When tested as electrode for a supercapacitor, the CNFs/3DGN hybrid nanoarchitecture demonstrated to possess a large surface area and showed an excellent specific capacitance of 59.28 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.17 mA cm(-2), also displayed good cycle stability with capacitance retention of 93.9% after 10,000 cycles in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Abstract:Transition metal oxide nanostructures are one of current investigation focuses for supercapacitors. We herein report a novel and facile approach to fabricate Co3O4 nanosheet arrays on 3D porous graphene/nickel foam. A graphene layer with the sharp edges and wrinkles is obtained on nickel foam by an electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The 2D thin Co3O4 nanosheets are further grown on the 3D porous graphene/nickel foam substrate through a hydrothermal synthesis, forming a 3D hierarchically porous architecture. The as-fabricated thin Co3O4 nanosheet array on graphene/nickel foam delivers a high specific capacitance of 3533 F g(-1) at a current of 1 A g(-1). The array electrode still shows a specific capacitance of 2222 F g(-1) even at a high rate (20 A g(-1)), demonstrating its prominent rate capability. Furthermore, the array electrode also exhibits the excellent electrochemical cycling stability with a specific capacitance of 2459 Fri after 2000 cycles at a current of 8 A g(-1). The superior pseudocapacitive performance of the array electrode can be attributed to its unique structure characteristics. The thin Co3O4 nanosheet array electrode with superior pseudocapacitive performance reveals the promising potential as a high-performance electrode for supercapacitors. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
