Abstract:ConspectusDeveloping next-generation colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals with high-quality optoelectronic properties and precise processability relies on achieving complete mastery over the surface characteristics of nanocrystals (NCs). This requires precise engineering of the ligand-NC surface interactions, which poses a challenge due to the complex reactivity of the multiple binding sites across the entire surface. Accordingly, recent progress has been made by strategically combining well-defined surface models with quantitative surface reactions to advance our understanding and manipulation of NC surface chemistry. Our lab has contributed to this progress by developing a size-dependent shape model of IV-VI NCs, gaining insights into their unique facet-specific chemistry, and developing a systematic ligand modification strategy for target applications. Furthermore, we have created well-defined facets in III-V NCs via a co-passivation strategy, addressing the previously lacking specific shapes.This Account is divided into three parts. First, we discuss the complexities involved in comprehensively understanding the nanocrystal surface structure at the atomistic level. We explain why we focused on well-defined NCs with a large exciton Bohr radius to explore facets, an essential aspect of surface heterogeneity across the entire NC. Second, we present our work on one of the most studied nanocrystals, IV-VI materials, and how facet-specific surface chemistry has led to a meaningful understanding and control of the NC's surface. We discovered a size-dependent facet distribution in IV-VI NCs and suggested facet-specific surface chemistry to improve the photophysical properties of NCs. We further modulate the electronic properties of NC assemblies for efficient optoelectronic applications. Third, we describe our recent success in achieving well-defined facets and their facet-specific chemistry in III-V NCs, which have yet to be explored as much as classical II-VI or IV-VI materials. We explain how controlling the surfaces in III-V NCs has been challenging. We present a precise growth platform for the geometric modulation of NCs, which can be further explored for shape-dependent exciton behavior and surface reactivities.Taken together, we present a compelling case for utilizing facet-specific chemistry as a platform for mechanistic investigation and morphology exploration, which can pave the way for developing high-quality and precisely designed NCs for optoelectronic technologies, unlocking new multidisciplinary applications.

Abstract:Since the discovery of metal chalcogenide complexes (MCCs) as capping ligands for colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) in 2009, the chemistry of inorganic ligands for NCs has provided a new paradigm for surface design of nanomaterials. Various inorganic anions including MCCs, metal-free chalcogenides, oxoanions/oxometallates, and halides/pseudohalides/halometallates have been employed to replace the original long-chain organic ligands on NCs. This ligand exchange can also be achieved through a two-step route using ligands stripping agents like HBF4. This review outlines recent advances in inorganically-capped colloidal NCs and details the ligand exchange process for NCs using MCCs and metal-free chalcogenides. The binding affinities of ligands to NC surface have been rationalized in terms of Pearson's hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) principle. We also demonstrate that inorganic ligands broaden the functionality of NCs by tailoring their electro-optical properties or generating new inorganic phases through chemical reactions between nanomaterials and their surface ligands. Especially promising are the electronic, optoelectronic, and thermoelectric applications of solution-processed, inorganically-capped colloidal NCs, which substantially outperform their organically-capped couterparts.

Abstract:Over the past thirty years, it has been consistently observed that surface engineering of colloidal nanocrystals (NC) is key to their performance parameters. In the case of lead chalcogenide NCs, for example, replacing thiols with halide anion surface termination has been shown to increase power conversion efficiency in NC-based solar cells. To gain insight into the origins of these improvements, we perform ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) on experimentally-relevant sized lead sulfide (PbS) NCs constructed with thiol or Cl, Br, and I anion surfaces. The surface of both the thiol- and halide-terminated NCs exhibit low and high-energy phonon modes with large thermal displacements not present in bulk PbS; however, halide anion surface termination reduces the overlap of the electronic wavefunctions with these vibration modes. These findings suggest that electron-phonon interactions will be reduced in the halide terminated NCs, a conclusion that is supported by analyzing the time-dependent evolution of the electronic energies and wavefunctions extracted from the AIMD. This work explains why electron-phonon interactions are crucial to charge carrier dynamics in NCs and how surface engineering can be applied to systematically control their electronic and phononic properties. Furthermore, we propose that the computationally efficient approach of gauging electron-phonon interaction implemented here can be used to guide the design of application-specific surface terminations for arbitrary nanomaterials.

Abstract:Organic ligands are essential in the growth of monodisperse colloidal inorganic nanocrystals and can be leveraged to create a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Inorganic nanocrystals coated with surfactant-like organic molecules have a vast range of properties that arise from the combination of the individual components. In this Review, we discuss the role that the tails of the organic ligands play in the synthesis and properties of colloidal nanocrystals, particularly the collective effects of the organic ligands on the surface. Ligand–ligand interactions influence the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the nanocrystals, as well as alter their colloidal stability. These interactions should inform the conceptualization of new nanocrystal syntheses as they influence the surface energy of the colloid, and these interactions should play a role in subsequent assembly strategies to prepare nanocrystal superlattices, which are driven by interparticle interactions.

The unified electronic nature of nanomaterial surface science

Abstract:The properties of inorganic nanomaterials in adsorption, catalysis, and photoluminescence are commonly affected or dominated by particle size, surface ligand, and ligand coverage; however, it has been long remaining challenging to generally understand underlying physical and chemical principles with a unified model. In this review the electronic-level principle that can unify the structure-property relationships concerning nanomaterial surface science is systematically illustrated, based on a chemisorption model through competitive orbital redistribution from bulk energy bands into surface chemisorption bonds. The physical nature of enhanced surface reactivity by size reduction lies in weakening lattice confinement on surface atomic orbitals and amplifying the effects of other structural factors such as defects. Nanoscale cooperative chemisorption (NCC) model reveals the general physical principles driving size- and coverage-dependent ligand-nanomaterial interactions owing to orbital competitions between bulk energy bands and surface adsorption bonds. NCC theory can interpret the impacts and trends of ligand-induced surface effects on electronic states, bonding strength, and the emission energy and quantum yield of both surface fluorescence like ligand-capped Au nanoclusters and bulk intraband fluorescence like CdSe quantum dots. Competitive orbital redistribution provides a new electronic perspective to unify the physical principles driving nanomaterial surface science.

Abstract:Quantum dot (QD) surface chemistry is an emerging field in semiconductor nanocrystal related research. Along with size manipulation, the careful control of QD surface chemistry allows modulation of the optical properties of a QD suspension. Even a single molecule bound to the surface can introduce new functionalities. Herein, we summarize the recent advances in QD surface chemistry and the resulting effects on optical and electronic properties. Specifically, this review addresses three main issues: (i) how surface chemistry affects the optical properties of QDs, (ii) how it influences the excited state dynamics, and (iii) how one can manipulate surface chemistry to control the interactions between QDs and metal oxides, metal nanoparticles, and in self-assembled QD monolayers.

Abstract:Assembly of nanoparticles is a promising route to fabricate devices from nanomaterials. Colloidal crystals are well-defined three-dimensional assemblies of nanoparticles with long-range ordered structures and crystalline symmetries. Here, we use a solvent evaporation induced assembly method to obtain colloidal crystals composed of polyhedral sodium rare earth fluoride nanoparticles. The building blocks exhibit the same crystalline orientation in each colloidal crystal as indicated in electron diffraction patterns. The driving force of the oriented assembly is ascribed to the facet-selected capping of oleic acid molecules on {110} facets of the nanoparticles, and the favorable coordination behavior of OA molecules is explained by the steric hindrance determined adsorption based on the studies of the surface atomic structure of nanocrystals and molecular mechanics simulation of OA molecules. The capping ligands also provide hydrophobic interactions between nanoparticles and further direct the oriented assembly process to construct a face-centered cubic structure. These results not only provide a new type of building block for colloidal crystals, but also clarify the important role of surface ligands, which determine the packed structure and orientations of nanoparticles in the assemblies.

Abstract:In this review, we highlight the role of halogenated compounds in the colloidal synthesis of nanostructured semiconductors. Halogen-containing metallic salts used as precursors and halogenated hydrocarbons used as ligands allow stabilizing different shapes and crystal phases, and enable the formation of colloidal systems with different dimensionality. We summarize recent reports on the tremendous influence of these compounds on the physical properties of nanocrystals, like field-effect mobility and solar cell performance and outline main analytical methods for the nanocrystal surface control.

Abstract:Colloidal nanocrystals are solution-grown, nanometre-sized, inorganic particles that are stabilized by a layer of surfactants attached to their surface. The inorganic cores possess useful properties that are controlled by their composition, size and shape, and the surfactant coating ensures that these structures are easy to fabricate and process further into more complex structures. This combination of features makes colloidal nanocrystals attractive and promising building blocks for advanced materials and devices. Chemists are achieving ever more exquisite control over the composition, size, shape, crystal structure and surface properties of nanocrystals, thus setting the stage for fully exploiting the potential of these remarkable materials.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) have emerged as next-generation semiconductor materials with outstanding optical and optoelectronic properties. Because of the high surface-to-volume ratio, the optical and optoelectronic performance and the colloidal stability of LHP NCs largely depend on their surface chemistry, especially the ligands and surface termination. On one hand, the capping ligands improve the colloidal stability and luminescence; on the other hand the highly dynamic binding nature of ligands is detrimental to the colloidal stability and photoluminescence of LHP NCs. In addition, the surface functionalization with desired molecules induces new functionalities such as chirality, light harvesting, and triplet sensitization through energy/electron transfer or use as X-ray detectors. In this review, we present the current understanding of an atomic view of the surface chemistry of colloidal LHP NCs, including crystal termination, vacancies, and different types of capping ligands. Furthermore, we discuss the ligand-induced functionalities, including photocatalysis and chirality.

Abstract:Abstract: Including the shape and size effect, the controllable doping, hetero-composite and surface/interface are the prerequisite of colloidal nanocrystals for exploring their optoelectronic properties, such as fluorescence, plasmon-exciton coupling, efficient electron/hole separation, and enhanced photocatalysis applications. By controlling soft acid-base coordination reactions between cation molecular complexes and colloidal nanocrystals, we showed that chemical thermodynamics could drive nanoscale monocrystalline growth of the semiconductor shell on metal nano-substrates and the substitutional heterovalent doping in semiconductor nanocrystals. We have demonstrated evolution of relative position of Au and II-VI semiconductor in Au-Semi from symmetric to asymmetric configuration, different phosphines initiated morphology engineering, oriented attachment of quantum dots into micrometer nanosheets with synergistic control of surface/interface and doing, which can further lead to fine tuning of plasmon-exciton coupling. Therefore, different hydrogen photocatalytic performance, Plasmon enhanced photocatalysis properties have been achieved further which lead to the fine tuning of plasmon-exciton coupling. Substitutional heterovalent doping here enables the tailoring of optical, electronic properties and photocatalysis applications of semiconductor nanocrystals because of electronic impurities (p-, n-type doping) control. Abstract:The presence of surface ligands not only plays a key role in keeping the colloidal integrity and non-defective surface of metal halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), but also serves as a knob to tune their optoelectronic properties for a variety of exciting applications including solar cells and light-emitting diodes. However, these indispensable surface ligands may also deteriorate the stability and key properties of PQDs due to their highly dynamic binding and insulating nature. To address these issues, a number of innovative surface chemistry engineering approaches have been developed in the past few years. Based on an in-depth fundamental understanding of the surface atomistic structure and surface defect formation mechanism in the tiny nanoparticles, a critical overview focusing on the surface chemistry engineering of PQDs including advanced colloidal synthesis, in-situ surface passivation, and solution-phase/solid-state ligand exchange is presented, after which their unprecedented achievements in photovoltaics and other optoelectronics are presented. The practical hurdles and future directions are critically discussed to inspire more rational design of PQD surface chemistry toward practical applications.

Abstract:Many physical and chemical properties of nanocrystals are closely related to their surface structures.Studies on the surface structure control of nanocrystals and related theories are hot and frontier research topics recently.In this review,we introduce the supersaturation control strategy and its application in the surface structure control of nanocrystals ranging from ionic,molecular,metallic,metal oxide,to metal-organic frameworks crystals.Deduced from thermodynamics,it can be found that the surface energy of nanocrystals is directly proportional to the supersaturation of growth units.The relationship between supersaturation and surface energy provides an important theoretical basis for the controlled synthesis of nanocrystals with specific surface structure.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has received extraordinary attention recently due to its burgeoning role in biomedical science. The materials composing the nanoparticles produce fascinating and diverse functionalities as a result of their exceptionally small size. In fact, even seemingly insignificant changes in particle size can have profound effects on these properties. Thus size control, both during synthesis and in particle suspensions, is a sine qua non for functionality. This can be accomplished by masking the particle surface with a multitude of different ligands. Not only can surface ligands constrain the growth of nucleation, they can also direct the shape of crystallization. However no single ligand can do everything. Fortunately ligands are essentially fungible and can be exchanged at various times to confer the desired properties to the particle. This can include protecting the particle from harsh aqueous conditions, such as pH extremes, maximizing optical properties for diagnostics or shielding the particle from potentially hostile conditions found in the body. Because these moieties interact ubiquitously with various biological materials, particularly proteins, there needs to be a rationalized design of surface ligands. The design of the ligand can have crucial effects on biodistribution as well as evasion of biological defenses. Ligands can even be designed to provide new functionality in response to various environmental stimuli to improve their therapeutic or diagnostic capabilities. Considering the importance of ligands then on this emerging field, this review will thoroughly consider the ligand design for the various steps of nanodevelopment, from synthesis and assembly through biomedical translation.
