For perovskite bulk films in the micrometer range, defects and structural disorder readily form at the surface and affect device performance. Through concerted efforts to optimize processing techniques, high-quality perovskite thin films can now be fabricated with monolayer-like polycrystalline grains or even single crystals. Surface defects, therefore, remain the major obstacle to progress, pushing surface studies to the forefront of perovskite research. Hence, research towards fundamental understanding of perovskite surfaces and how they can affect the materials properties is crucial to further improving the perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.In Chapter 2, surface energies will be shown to play an important role in affecting the phase stability of perovskite materials. Thermodynamic and crystallographic analyses revealed that enhanced contribution of the surface energy and lattice contraction contribute to the superior stability of colloidal quantum dots (CQDs). This approach provides a new route for achieving stable formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) perovskite solar cells. Later on, in Chapter 3, a conjugated small molecule ITIC was introduced into the FAPbI3 CQDs perovskite solar cells to further enhance the power conversion efficiency of the devices.In Chapter 4, I will show that in lead halide perovskites, how their “soft” nature renders them highly responsive to the external field, allowing for extended depth scale affected by the surface. By taking advantage of this unique feature of perovskites, I demonstrate a methodology for property manipulation of perovskite thin films based on secondary grain growth, where tuning of the surface induces the internal property evolution of the entire perovskite film. While in conventional microelectronic techniques secondary grain growth generally involves harsh conditions such as high temperature and straining, it is easily triggered in a perovskite thin film by a simple surface post-treatment, producing enlarged grain sizes of up to 4 μm. The resulting photovoltaic devices exhibit significantly enhanced power conversion efficiency and operational stability over a course of 1000 h and an ambient shelf stability of over 4000 h while maintaining over 90% of its original efficiency.Surface trap-mediated non-radiative charge recombination is a major limit to achieving high-efficiency metal-halide perovskite photovoltaics. The ionic character of perovskite lattice has enabled molecular defect passivation approaches via interaction between functional groups and defects. However, a lack of in-depth understanding of how the molecular configuration influence the passivation effectiveness is a challenge to rational molecule design. In Chapter 5, the chemical environment of a functional group that is activated for defect passivation was systematically investigated with theophylline, caffeine and theobromine. When N-H and C=O were in an optimal configuration within the molecule, hydrogen-bond formation between N-H and I assisted the primary C=O binding with the antisite Pb defect to maximize surface-defect binding. A stabilized power conversion efficiency of 22.6% of photovoltaic device was demonstrated with theophylline treatment.

Abstract:The combination of the quantum confinement effect of quantum dots (QDs) and unique photoelectric properties of perovskite semiconductors make perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) a promising candidate for photoelectric devices. To truly unlock their potential, a deep understanding of structure‐property relationship is paramount. Among the various factors influencing this relationship, the role of surface ligands cannot be overstated. The polarity, conductivity, stability, and interaction effects of these ligands with QD surfaces create complicated ligand‐QDs relationships, which greatly influences the successful synthesis of QDs. In essence, the surface chemistry of ligands serves as a critical determinant in shaping the properties of both the resulting QDs and QD‐based devices. To address this, our paper introduces an innovative approach to studying ligands, utilizing their inherent functional groups as a classification criterion. It is begun by discussing the types of surface defects of PQDs and the functional groups used for passivation, emphasizing the importance of analyzing ligands based on their functional groups. Then the passivation mechanisms of ligands with various functional groups and their impact on enhancing QD performance are delved into. Ultimately, this paper summarizes and offers several design principles and rules for PQDs surface ligands that can be applied in most scenarios.

Multidentate Passivation Crosslinking Perovskite Quantum Dots for Efficient Solar Cells

Abstract:The surface ligand chemistry is vital to diminish surface defects and improve the electronic coupling of perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) toward emerging applications in optoelectronic devices. Herein, we report a "surface surgery treatment" of PQDs using multidentate ligands, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), for resurfacing PQDs. The results reveal that the EDTA could not only peel the suspended Pb2+ ions from the PQD surface but also effectively passivate the surface defects of PQDs by occupying I- vacancies. Meanwhile, the EDTA could also crosslink PQDs as a charger bridge to improve the electronic coupling of PQDs. Consequently, the charge carrier transport within the PQD solid films is substantially improved with suppressed nonradiative recombination, boosting the efficiency of up to 15.25% in inorganic PQD solar cells (PQDSCs), among the highest efficiencies of inorganic PQDSCs realized by regulating surface ligands of PQDs. This work provides a distinctive understanding of the surface functionalization of PQDs to improve their optoelectronic properties for application in highperformance optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) and perovskite magic sized clusters (PMSCs) exhibit interesting size- and composition-dependent optoelectronic properties that are promising for emerging applications including photovoltaic solar cells and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Much work has focused on developing new synthesis strategies to improve their structural stability and property tunability. In this paper, we review recent progress in the synthesis and characterization of PQDs and PMSCs, with a focus on the impact of different molecular ligands on their surface passivation and interconversion. Moreover, the effect of capping ligands on ion exchange during synthesis and doping is discussed. Finally, we present some perspectives on challenges and opportunities in fundamental studies and potential applications of both PQDs and PMSCs.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have demonstrated considerable promise across various optoelectronic applications. Surface passivation serves as a pivotal strategy to obtain high‐quality perovskite materials, either in a manner of bulk thin film or nanocrystal, with superior optoelectronic properties and stability. The current research focus in this regard primarily revolves around the use of organic molecules to passivate the surface of perovskites. However, organic passivation molecules always suffer from chemical instability and weak secondary bonding modes, resulting in an unstable surface passivation motif. Inorganic materials, possessing more stable chemical structures and stronger chemical bonding than their organic counterparts, offer the opportunities to construct more robust passivation for the perovskite surfaces. Herein, in this review, we summarized and assessed recent advancements in inorganic surface passivation strategies for perovskite materials and devices, ranging from nanocrystals to bulk films. By discussing the mechanisms behind various inorganic passivation strategies, we aim to offer mechanistic insights and guidelines for future developments of more targeted surface passivation approaches tailored for perovskite materials and devices.

Abstract:In contrast to conventional colloidal quantum dots (CQDs), management of insulating ligands on perovskite CQDs is challenging because their ionic bonds are highly vulnerable to polar solvents. Consequently, there have been only a few examples of perovskite CQD solar cells incorporating relatively robust inorganic perovskite of which optoelectronic properties are not ideal for photovoltaic devices. Here, we report efficient and stable CQD solar cells based on formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI3) CQDs realized by rational surface regulation. Tailoring polarity of antisolvents for the post-synthetic process enabled effective removal of the insulating ligands on FAPbI3 CQDs while preserving perovskite cores. Owing to the enhanced inter-dot electrical coupling, a power-conversion efficiency of 8.38% was demonstrated. Furthermore, the FAPbI3 CQDs-based devices showed superior stability over those of bulk FAPbI3 devices. Thermodynamic and crystallographic analyses revealed that enhanced contribution of the surface energy and lattice contraction contribute to their superior stability.

Abstract:Metal-trihalide perovskite quantum dots combine the unique semiconducting properties of bulk perovskites with the controllable exciton dynamics benefiting from the quantum confinement effect. Composition- and size-adjustable electronic and optical properties of perovskites convert into a variety of applications. Here, we start from a brief introduction to perovskite quantum dots, followed by a detailed description of the synthesis methods and surface modification/passivation strategies of these nano-sized particles. Then, we review the applications of perovskite quantum dots including light-emitting diodes, photovoltaics, catalysis, sensing, bioimaging, and lasers. Finally, we develop outlooks for promising futures toward the commercial application of perovskite quantum dots.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are currently attracting a great deal of attention for their excellent photovoltaic properties, with a maximum photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.5%, comparable to that of silicon-based solar cells. However, PSCs suffer from energy level mismatch, a large number of defects in perovskite films, and easy decomposition under ultraviolet (UV) light, which greatly limit the industrial application of PSCs. Currently, quantum dot (QD) materials are widely used in PSCs due to their properties, such as quantum size effect and multi-exciton effect. In this review, we detail the application of QDs as an interfacial layer to PSCs to optimize the energy level alignment between two adjacent layers, facilitate charge and hole transport, and also effectively assist in the crystallization of perovskite films and passivate defects on the film surface.

Abstract:Developing passivation strategies to achieve highly efficient and stable red quantum dots holds significant importance for the application of perovskite luminescent materials. Here, we introduce a kind of small molecule passivating ligands during the synthesis of perovskite quantum dots, which exhibit stronger anchoring interactions with the quantum dot surface and passivate surface vacancy defects. Based on this, we have achieved CsPbI3 quantum dots with a Photoluminescence Quantum Yield (PLQY) close to 100% and applied them in light‐ emitting diodes (LEDs), resulting in LEDs with an EQE as high as 19.8%.

Abstract:Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have captured a host of researchers' attention due to their unique properties, which have been introduced to lots of optoelectronics areas, such as light-emitting diodes, lasers, photodetectors, and solar cells. Herein, the authors aim at reviewing the achievements of PQDs applied to solar cells in recent years. The engineering concerning surface ligands, additives, and hybrid composition for PQDSCs is outlined first, followed by analyzing the reasons of undesired performance of PQDSCs. Subsequently, a novel overview that PQDs are utilized to improve the photovoltaic performance of various kinds of solar cells, is provided. Finally, this review is summarized and some challenges and perspectives concerning PQDs are also discussed.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently emerged as an ideal candidate for next-generation photovoltaic applications. While promising, many challenges stand between PSCs and widespread application, including moisture, thermal and UV stability, photocurrent hysteresis behavior, flexibility, and large-scale productions. Meanwhile, quantum dot materials have attracted intensive research interest within past decades owing to their fantastic optical, electrical and optoelectrical properties, such as size-dependent energy band gaps derived from quantum confinement, high photon absorption coefficient, and multiple exciton generation. Their facile solution synthesis, tunable energy-level structures, and variable surface chemistry via ligand engineering make quantum dots (QDs) attractive for a variety of significant functions in PSCs. In this review, we summarize how a variety of QD materials (e.g., carbon, graphene, metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal selenides, metal tellurides, black phosphorus, organic/inorganic halide perovskites, etc.) can be applied in PSCs. We detail that QDs can play diverse roles in PSCs, including light harvesters, electron and hole transporters, additives into perovskite and charge transport layers, and interfacial modifiers. Particularly, the introduction of QD materials into PSCs enables the growth of high-quality perovskite films with larger grain sizes and reduced trap-state density due to the strong chemical interaction between QDs and perovskites, yielding high efficiency of stable PSCs. The size-dependent energy band gaps of QDs enable enhanced energy-level alignment for efficient charge transfer in PSCs. Moreover, the incorporation of QDs capped with highly hydrophobic ligands can enhance the long-term moisture stability of PSCs. Additionally, the photoluminescence property of QDs can be used to convert UV-radiation into harvestable visible light to improve the photocurrent and photostability of PSCs. The different characteristics and functions of QDs in PSCs are then discussed. Finally, insight into the further development of QD materials in PSCs is outlined.

Abstract:Quantum dots are promising semiconductor nanocrystals in the field of photocatalysis owing to their unique properties in contrast to bulk semiconductors. Surface ligands, the molecules or ions connected to quantum dots, are indispensable components for intact colloidal quantum dots. They play important roles to influence various physical and chemical properties of quantum dots. Therefore, understanding the structure of surface ligands and their specific mechanism for the photocatalytic process of quantum dots is of great significance. In this paper, the typical classification, the common characterization techniques and the function of surface ligands are first reviewed in brief. This provides a general understanding of the surface ligands, which is the prerequisite to revealing their possible impact on the photocatalytic processes. Influences of surface ligands of quantum dots on photocatalysis are then discussed in detail from four aspects: adjustment of band energy structure, charge transfer and separation process, surface reaction process as well as photocatalytic stability. In the end, we summarize the current research progress and potential research directions in this field, which could give the readers clues for future study.

Highly Orientated Perovskite Quantum Dot Solids for Efficient Solar Cells

Abstract:Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) emerge as competitive optoelectronic materials for photovoltaic applications due to their ideal bandgap energy, high defect tolerance and solution processability. However, the highly dynamic surface and unperfect cubic structure of PQDs generally result in unfavorable charge carrier transport within the PQD solids and serious nonradiative recombination. Herein, the highly orientated PQD solid is demonstrated using precursor engineering accompanied by a chemical stripping treatment (CST). A combination of systematically experimental studies and theoretical calculations is conducted to fundamentally understand the resurfacing of PQDs using the CST approach. The results reveal that highly ordered PQDs could result in a high orientation of PQD solids, significantly promoting the charge carrier transport within the PQD solids. Meanwhile, the ideal cubic-structured PQD with an iodine-rich surface dramatically decreases surface trap states, thereby substantially diminishing trap-assisted nonradiative recombination. Consequently, the inorganic PQD solar cell (PQDSC) delivers a power conversion efficiency of up to 16.25%. This work provides a feasible avenue to construct highly orientated PQD solids with improved photophysical properties for high-performance optoelectronic devices. Abstract:Manipulating the separation and transfer behaviors of charges has long been pursued for promoting the photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation based on II-VI quantum dot (QDs), but remains challenging due to the lack of effective strategies. Herein, a facile strategy is reported to regulate the recombination and transfer of interfacial charges through tuning the surface stoichiometry of heterostructured QDs. Using this method, it is demonstrated that the PEC cells based on CdSe-(SexS1-x)(4)-(CdS)(2) core/shell QDs with a proper S-surface/Cd-surface ratio exhibits a remarkably improved photocurrent density (approximate to 18.4 mA cm(-2) under one sun illumination), superior to the PEC cells based on QDs with Cd-rich or excessive S-rich surface. In-depth electrochemical and spectroscopic characterizations reveal the critical role (hole traps) of surface S atoms in suppressing the recombination of photogenerated charges, and further attribute the inferior performance of excessive S-rich QDs to the impeded charge transfer from QDs to TiO2 and electrolyte. This work puts forward a simple surface engineering strategy for improving the performance of QDs PEC cells, providing an efficient method to guide the surface design of QDs for their applications in other optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Lead halide-based perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have recently emerged as an important class of nanocrystal (NC) materials for optoelectronic and photoelectrochemical applications. Thanks to their intriguing features including tunable band gap, narrow emission, high charge carrier mobility, remarkable light-absorbing factors, and long charge diffusion length, there has been a surge in research on lead halide-based PQDs and their applications. In this review, we showcase the fundamentals of PQDs and two principal applications including PQD solar cells (PQDSCs) and photocatalytic conversion. First, a thorough discussion on PQDSCs, their structure, surface treatment, and interface engineering along with their recent progress are presented. It is highlighted that the improvement of the efficiency of PQDSCs from below 10% to beyond 16% in a matter of a few years has turned them into promising candidates for future SC applications. Subsequently, the application of PQDs in photocatalytic reactions such as hydrogen production, CO2 reduction, and organic compounds’ degradation is summarized. Not to mention that, despite the remarkable properties of PQDs in SCs and photocatalysis, the inferior stability of PV devices based thereon under operation as well as their poor tolerance under air, water, light, and heat impede their widespread application. For this, the practical efforts and possible solutions are extensively addressed. Finally, an outlook is provided, addressing further merits, and demerits of each application as well as prospective opportunities.

Abstract:<p>Surfaces and heterojunction interfaces, where defects and energy levels dictate charge-carrier dynamics in optoelectronic devices, are critical for unlocking the full potential of perovskite semiconductors. In this progress report, chemical structures of perovskite surfaces are discussed and basic physical rules for the band alignment are summarized at various perovskite interfaces. Common perovskite surfaces are typically decorated by various compositional and structural defects such as residual surface reactants, discrete nanoclusters, reactions by products, vacancies, interstitials, antisites, etc. Some of these surface species induce deep-level defect states in the forbidden band forming very harmful charge-carrier traps and affect negatively the interface band alignments for achieving optimal device performance. Herein, an overview of research progresses on surface and interface engineering is provided to minimize deep-level defect states. The reviewed subjects include selection of interface and substrate buffer layers for growing better crystals, materials and processing methods for surface passivation, the surface catalyst for microstructure transformations, organic semiconductors for charge extraction or injection, heterojunctions with wide bandgap perovskites or nanocrystals for mitigating defects, and electrode interlayer for preventing interdiffusion and reactions. These surface and interface engineering strategies are shown to be critical in boosting device performance for both solar cells and light-emitting diodes.</p>

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are important candidates for next-generation thin-film photovoltaic technology due to their superior performance in energy harvesting. At present, their photoelectric conversion efficiencies (PCEs) are comparable to those of silicon-based solar cells. PSCs usually have a multi-layer structure. Therefore, they face the problem that the energy levels between adjacent layers often mismatch each other. Meanwhile, large numbers of defects are often introduced due to the solution preparation procedures. Furthermore, the perovskite is prone to degradation under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. These problems could degrade the efficiency and stability of PSCs. In order to solve these problems, quantum dots (QDs), a kind of low-dimensional semiconductor material, have been recently introduced into PSCs as charge transport materials, interfacial modification materials, dopants and luminescent down-shifting materials. By these strategies, the energy alignment and interfacial conditions are improved, the defects are efficiently passivated, and the instability of perovskite under UV irradiation is suppressed. So the device efficiency and stability are both improved. In this paper, we overview the recent progress of QDs' utilizations in PSCs.

Abstract:Perovskite quantum dot solar cells (PQDSCs), as the promising candidate for the next generation of solar cell, have garnered the significant attention over the past decades. However, the performance and stability of PQDSCs are highly dependent on the properties of interfaces between the perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) and the other layers in the device. This work provides a brief overview of PQDSCs, including the synthesis of PQDs, the characteristics and preparation methods of PQDs, the photoelectric properties as the light absorption layer and optimization methods for PQDSCs with high efficiency. Future directions and potential applications are also highlighted.

Abstract:In recent years, academic research on perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has attracted remarkable attention, and one of the most crucial issues is promoting the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and operational stability of PSCs. Generally, modification of the electron or hole transport layers between the perovskite layers and electrodes via surface engineering is considered an effective strategy because the inherent structural defects between charge carrier transport layers and perovskite layers can be reshaped and modified by adopting the functional nanomaterials, and thus the charge recombination rate can be naturally decreased. At present, large amounts of available nanomaterials for surface modification of the perovskite films are extensively investigated, mainly including nanocrystals, nanorods, nanoarrays, and even colloidal quantum dots (QDs). In particular, as unique size-dependent nanomaterials, the diverse quantum properties of colloidal QDs are different from other nanomaterials, such as their quantum confinement effects, quantum-tunable effects, and quantum surface effects, which display great potential in promoting the PCE and operational stability of PSCs as the charge carriers in perovskite layers can be effectively tuned by these quantum effects. However, preparing QDs with a neat and desirable size remains a technical difficulty, even though the present chemical engineering is highly advanced. Fortunately, the rapid advances in laser technology have provided new insight into the precise preparation of QDs. In this review, we introduce a new approach for preparing the QDs, namely pulsed laser irradiation in colloids (PLIC), and briefly highlight the innovative works on PLIC-prepared QDs for the optimization of PSCs. This review not only highlights the advantages of PLIC for QD preparation but also critically points out the challenges and prospects of QD-based PSCs.
