Abstract:As one of the most common chemical materials, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been prepared and widely used for many years. Among all the applications, the biomedical applications of TiO2 have motivated strong interest and intensive experimental and theoretical studies, owing to its unique photocatalytic properties, excellent biocompatibility, high chemical stability, and low toxicity. Advances in nanoscale science suggest that some of the current problems of life science could be resolved or greatly improved through applying TiO2. This paper presents a critical review of recent advances in the biomedical applications of TiO2, which includes the photodynamic therapy for cancer treatment, drug delivery systems, cell imaging, biosensors for biological assay, and genetic engineering. The characterizations and applications of TiO2 nanoparticles, as well as nanocomposites and nanosystems of TiO2, which have been prepared by different modifications to improve the function of TiO2, are also offered in this review. Additionally, some perspectives on the challenges and new directions for future research in this emerging frontier are discussed.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been prepared and widely used for many years. Owing to its unique photocatalytic properties, excellent strength and biocompatibility, high chemical stability, and low toxicity, TiO2 has been extensively used in biomedical applications. Advances in nanoscale science suggest that some of the current problems of life science could be resolved or greatly improved via utilization of TiO2. This chapter illustrated a critical review of current achievement of nano TiO2 in the biomedical field. This includes special insight into the role of nanostructured TiO2 as an implants material, drug delivery systems and antimicrobial agent in device related infections (DRI). The synthesis-characterization-properties-performance relationships of TiO2 in the respected application is emphasized in this chapter. The latest challenges and new directions for future research in this emerging frontier are also elaborated.

Abstract:Currently, titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are successfully employed in human food, drugs, cosmetics, advanced medicine, and dentistry because of their non-cytotoxic, non-allergic, and bio-compatible nature when used in direct close contact with the human body. These NPs are the most versatile oxides as a result of their acceptable chemical stability, lower cost, strong oxidation properties, high refractive index, and enhanced aesthetics. These NPs are fabricated by conventional (physical and chemical) methods and the latest biological methods (biological, green, and biological derivatives), with their advantages and disadvantages in this epoch. The significance of TiO2 NPs as a medical material includes drug delivery release, cancer therapy, orthopedic implants, biosensors, instruments, and devices, whereas their significance as a dental biomaterial involves dentifrices, oral antibacterial disinfectants, whitening agents, and adhesives. In addition, TiO2 NPs play an important role in orthodontics (wires and brackets), endodontics (sealers and obturating materials), maxillofacial surgeries (implants and bone plates), prosthodontics (veneers, crowns, bridges, and acrylic resin dentures), and restorative dentistry (GIC and composites).

Abstract:In modern research, nanotechnology is of great interest having certain advantageous and enormous applications in various fields. Among different metal oxides, titanium dioxide (Titania) stands out among metal oxides due to its advantageous properties such as being cost-effective, non-toxic, thermally and chemically stable, biocompatible, and having a suitable band gap for solar energy conversion. It exists in three allotropic forms and can be synthesized using chemical, physical, or biological methods, with biological approaches being particularly favored for their eco-friendliness and cost-effectiveness. The multifunctional characteristics of titania enables its use in diverse industrial and research applications, including food packaging, wastewater treatment, degradation of pollutants, energy storage, and more. The review provides an overview of synthesis methods and extensive applications of titania across different life sciences and industries. Abstract:In recent years, titanium dioxide (TiO2), one of the most vital and classical metal oxides, has been thoroughly investigated and extensively used in many fields of science and technology owing to its outstanding photo activity. TiO2-based nanosystems become the potential candidate which has been widely utilized in cancer therapy and antimicrobial field because of the high photo-therapeutic activity. In this review, the recent advances in TiO2-based nanosystems for cancer therapy, including photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT) and combination therapy with other strategies, are summarized. The photo-therapies of TiO2- based nanosystems could be promising alternative strategy for traditional cancer therapies due to the deeper penetration depth and the absence of phototoxicity in clinic. Meanwhile, the frontiers in TiO2-based nanosystems for bacteria-induced infectious diseases management are introduced and summarized here. This potential therapy could efficiently and effectively eliminate the bacteria, manage the infection, and avoid the microbial drug-resistance. Finally, the challenges for the future development of TiO2-based nanosystems in biomedical applications are concluded and discussed. Collectively, we think that TiO2-based nanosystems could be potentially applied in clinical fields to promote the improvement of cancer and infections treatments.

Abstract:<p>The research of titanium-based nanomaterials (Ti-based NMs) has gradually expanded from the fields of photocatalysis, electronics, energy, and engineering to biomedicine in recent years. As a non-toxic transitional metal, Ti has been used to construct various nanomaterials with unparalleled structural, compositional, and physicochemical features combined with multitudinous alluring properties. These excellent and unique properties endow Ti-based NMs that have broad biomedical application potential. Ti-based NMs mainly include titanium oxides, titanium carbides, titanium nitrides, titanium sulfides, titanium hydrides, titanium-organic coordination compounds, and their nanocomposites. In this review, we mainly summarize the preparation, surface modification, and their recent progress of Ti-based NMs in cancer theranostics. The application of Ti-based NMs has gradually expanded from the simple drug delivery systems to versatile platforms for multiple therapies, including photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and sonodynamic therapy (SDT), etc. To significantly improve the therapeutic efficiency of tumors and reduce the side effects compared with the single therapy, Ti-based NMs have been widely used in combination therapy. Moreover, the single/multi-modal imaging based on Ti-based NMs are also briefly introduced, as well as the strategies to enhance the diagnostic effectiveness. This review highlights the theranostic applications of Ti-based NMs with various composition, structure, and size. To promote the pre-clinical transformation of Ti-based NMs, the toxicity evaluation is also systematically discussed. In addition, the future challenge and perspective are briefly summarized.</p>

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) are one of the topmost widely used metallic oxide nanoparticles. Whether present in naked form or doped with metals or polymers, TiO2 NPs perform immensely important functions. However, the alteration in size and shape by doping results in improving the physical, chemical, and biological behaviour of TiO2 NPs. Hence, the differential effects of various TiO2 nanostructures including nanoflakes, nanoflowers, and nanotubes in various domains of biotechnology have been elucidated by researchers. Recently, the exponential growth of research activities regarding TiO2 NPs has been observed owing to their chemical stability, low toxicity, and multifaceted properties. Because of their enormous abundance, plants, humans, and environment are inevitably exposed to TiO2 NPs. These NPs play a significant role in improving agricultural attributes, removing environmental pollution, and upgrading the domain of nanomedicine. Therefore, the currently ongoing studies about the employment of TiO2 NPs in enhancement of different aspects of agriculture, environment, and medicine have been extensively discussed in this review.

Abstract:As an important inorganic material,titanium dioxide gets more and more attention and is used in various fields,especially in the biomedical field.This paper summarizes the main synthesis methods of titanium dioxide nanomaterial and its applications in cancer therapy area.The titanium dioxide nanomaterial can be prepared by gas,liquid and solid phase methods.Among them,we mainly introduce liquid phase methods including sol-gel method,hydrothermal method,solvothermal,and microemulsion method.We also further describe the principles of photodynamic therapy and photoacoustic treatment in cancer treatments and applications.Finally,we get the conclusions and have an outlook at the application of titanium dioxide nanomaterials in biomedicine.

Abstract:Large volumes of titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) are produced globally for a variety of uses. The physicochemical characteristics of TiO2 nanoparticles differ from those of their fine particle (FP) analogues, potentially modifying their bioactivity. The majority of the research included here has addressed the respiratory system and demonstrated the significance of inhalation as the main method of exposure to TiO2 NP in the workplace. TiO2 NPs have the potential to move from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and lung to systemic organs, albeit this appears to happen at a slow rate. Additionally, research has been conducted on other human exposure pathways. TiO2 nanoparticulate carriers can be injected intravenously to enter the human body and be used in nanomedicine. Intravenous exposure to TiO2 NPs can result in pathological lesions in the brain, kidneys, liver, and spleen. Additionally, as we have demonstrated here, the majority of these effects might result from the use of extremely high concentrations of TiO2 NPs. Despite the rising manufacturing and usage of TiO2 NPs, there is also a dearth of epidemiological data on this topic. Lung tumors have been documented in long-term rat inhalation trials, however. This study outlines the present state of knowledge about the general and green synthesis methods of TiO2 nanoparticles with applications in medicine.

Abstract:Breakthroughs in the field of nanotechnology, especially in nanochemistry and nanofabrication technologies, have been attracting much attention, and various nanomaterials have recently been developed for biomedical applications. Among these nanomaterials, nanoscale titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) has been widely valued in stomatology due to the fact of its excellent biocompatibility, antibacterial activity, and photocatalytic activity as well as its potential use for applications such as dental implant surface modification, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, drug delivery carrier, dental material additives, and oral tumor diagnosis and treatment. However, the biosafety of nano-TiO2 is controversial and has become a key constraint in the development of nano-TiO2 applications in stomatology. Therefore, in this review, we summarize recent research regarding the applications of nano-TiO2 in stomatology, with an emphasis on its performance characteristics in different fields, and evaluations of the biological security of nano-TiO2 applications. In addition, we discuss the challenges, prospects, and future research directions regarding applications of nano-TiO2 in stomatology that are significant and worthy of further exploration.

Abstract:Background: Recent developments in nanotechnology have provided efficient and promising methods for the treatment of diseases to achieve better therapeutic results and lower side effects. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials are emerging inorganic nanomaterials with excellent properties such as low toxicity and easy functionalization. TiO2 with special nanostructures can be used as delivery vehicles for drugs, genes and antigens for various therapeutic options. The exploration of TiO2-based drug delivery systems shows great promise for translating nanotechnology into clinical applications; Methods: Comprehensive data on titanium dioxide were collected from reputable online databases including PubMed, GreenMedical, Web of Science, Google Scholar, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, and National Intellectual Property Administration; Results: In this review, we discuss the synthesis pathways and functionalization strategies of TiO2. Recent advances of TiO2 as a drug delivery system, including sustained and controlled drug release delivery systems were introduced. Rigorous long-term systematic toxicity assessment is an extremely critical step in application to the clinic, and toxicity is still a problem that needs to be closely monitored; Conclusions: Despite the great progress made in TiO2-based smart systems, there is still a great potential for development. Future research may focus on developing dual-reaction delivery systems and single-reaction delivery systems like redox and enzyme reactions. Undertaking thorough in vivo investigations is necessary prior to initiating human clinical trials. The high versatility of these smart drug delivery systems will drive the development of novel nanomedicines for personalized treatment and diagnosis of many diseases with poor prognosis.

Abstract:The emergence of nanomaterials as an exciting class of materials is the main reason for the high demand for nanoparticle utility and practical applications in the modern era. At present, the green synthesis process has proved to be the most advanced method in the production of nanoparticles. In green synthetic method, plant or its part is used for bioreduction of metal ions to their elemental form. Nanoparticles manufactured by this method are simple, accessible, eco-friendly and available at low cost and can be easily scaled up for larger operations. For this reason, in the modern era, their application is being done in areas like biosensors, lithium ion batteries, water purification, electrocatalysis, coating, photo-thermal therapies, drug delivery, etc. Among the different metal and metal oxide nanoparticles TiO2 is one of the most promising nanoparticles due to their unique structural chemical and morphological properties. Green synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles by using extract of different biological agent is one of the most growing areas of research. Phytochemicals, enzymes, and proteins, all bioactive components, play an essential role in the production of nanoparticles. The potentiality of titania (TiO2) to operate as an antibacterial and photocatalytic agent is one of the topics that has garnered the most interest from the scientific community. This review provides an overview of different available green synthesis method for the fabrication of TiO2 nanoparticles and also highlighted the different industrial applications of TiO2.

Abstract:Photodynamic therapy(PDT) is one of the latest biomedical technologies used for treatment of various neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. However, there still exist some well-known problems regarding its efficacy, e.g. effective concentration of the drug at the desired sites, the irradiation light dosimetry and biocompatibility of the photosensitizer. The introduction of nanotechnology and nanomaterial like biocompatible nano-titania(i.e., nano-TiO 2 ) may facilitate to solve some of these problems. In this study we have explored the possibility of combining tetra sulphonatophenyl porphyrin(TSPP) with nano-titania(PT) for efficient PDT with least adverse effects. The spectroscopic properties of these nano-composites were characterized by using fluorescence and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic study. The singlet oxygen quantum yield was determined by using 2,5-diphenyl-3,4-benzofuran(DPBF), while the effect of nano TiO 2 with TSPP on the synovial fibroblast cells from human(HSC) and rat models(RSC) were investigated by confocal laser microscopy and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay. Our results suggest that nano TiO 2 with TSPP can be readily utilized for effective PDT treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis(RA).
