Abstract:In the context of recycling metal to embrace the sustainability challenge, this work proposes a geochemically-analogous process of metal recovery through mechanochemistry for the first time, to avoid the limitations of on-going methods and to establish an innovative technology philosophy. This work systematically investigates this geochemically-analogous process, to keep it green and to generalize it further. Copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), a typical copper-rich waste, is chosen as a case study in this work. Nearly 98% of the copper in the WPCBs can be recycled in the optimized conditions and 82.3% of the sulfur can be reused, by means of the process. Based on the experimental result, this paper purports a closed-loop route of copper recovery which follows the green chemistry principles (high yield, high atom economy and no secondary pollution). This route can be generalized into other second-hand resources that are rich in copper. Some other metals (e.g. lead) that are commonly present as corresponding sulfides in nature can be taken into consideration in this geochemically-analogous process as well.

Abstract:Recycling metals from wastes is essential to a resource-efficient economy, and increasing attention from researchers has. been devoted to this process in recent years, with emphasis on mechanochemistry technology. The mechanochemical method can make technically feasible the recycling of metals from some specific wastes, such as cathode ray tube (CRT) funnel glass and tungsten carbide waste, while significantly improving recycling efficiency. Particle size reduction, specific surface area increase, crystalline structure decomposition and bond breakage have been identified as the main processes occurring during the mechanochemical operations in the studies. The activation energy required decreases and reaction activity increases, after these changes with activation progress. This study presents an overall review of the applications of mechanoehemistry to metal recycling from wastes. The reaction mechanisms; equipment used, method procedures, and optimized operating parameters of each case, as well as methods enhancing the activation process are discussed in detail. The issues to be addressed and perspectives on the future development of mechanochemistry applied for metal recycling are also presented.

Abstract:Mechanochemistry is defined to describe the chemical and physicochemical transformation of substances during the aggregation caused by the mechanical energy. Mechanochemical technology has several advantages, such as simple process, ecological safety and the possibility of obtaining a product in the metastable state. It potentially has a prospective application in pollution remediation and waste management. Therefore, this paper aims to give an overall review of the mechanochemistry applications in waste management and the related mechanisms. Based on our study, the modification of fly ash and asbestos-containing wastes (ACWs) can be achieved by mechanochemical technology. Waste metal oxides can be transformed into easily recyclable sulfide by mechanochemical sulfidization. Besides, the waste plastics and rubbers, which are usually very difficult to be recycled, can also be recycled by mechanochemical technology.

Abstract:Under the goal of global sustainable development, the new energy vehicle industry is evolving rapidly, leading to a proliferation of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The recycling of LIBs is key to the sustainable development of the new energy industry, which is consistent with the concept of circular economy as well. And the green extraction of critical metals is the core part of the development. As an alternative to traditional pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, emerging mechanochemical technology provides a new approach for high efficiency and green recycling of critical metals from spent LIBs, as it has the advantages of easy operation, flexibility, and short processing time. This article reviews the state of the art of mechanochemical technology in the recycling of critical metals from spent LIBs. Based on numerous practices, a framework including mechanochemical activation, organic reaction, inorganic reaction, redox reaction, gas-solid reaction, and solid-phase synthesis was constructed. These practices have proved that mechanochemical technology can provide a greener and more sustainable solution for recycling critical metals from spent LIBs. The metals can be transformed into high-value metal products at room temperature and under ordinary pressure, leading to efficient recycling of critical metals and significant reduction of wastes.

Abstract:Mechanochemistry (MC) is a green, sustainable and easy scaling-up production modification technology, which has the advantages of short modification time, high reaction activity and no corrosion problems. MC shows great potential in pollutant control (removal/degradation of pollutants, solidification of heavy metals) and energy storage application (recovery of valuable metals, manufacture of nano energy storage materials). However. The application of MC in the above aspects haven't paid much attention and discussed insufficient. As a non/less-solvent technology, MC produces unique physicochemical properties during the synthesis process, directly modify or constrain materials. Meanwhile, MC recovers high value-added substances from spent energy storage equipment to realize waste recycling, which is in line with sustainable development goals. This paper reviews the application of MC for capture trace elements (TEs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by fly ash (FA), degradation of dioxins (PCDD/Fs) and solidification of heavy metals in FA, preparation of nano energy storage materials and recovery of valuable metals from spent energy storage devices based on the latest findings. This work highlights the potential applications of MC in the fields of environmental governance and energy storage, and provides insights into sustainable development goals. The current key bottlenecks and further research challenges are proposed.

Abstract:Urban mining is essential for continued natural resource extraction. The recovery of rare and precious metals (RPMs) from urban mines has attracted increasing attention from both academic and industrial sectors, because of the broad application and high price of RPMs, and their low content in natural ores. This study summarizes the distribution characteristics of various RPMs in urban mines, and the advantages and shortcomings of various technologies for RPM recovery from urban mines, including both conventional (pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and biometallurgical processing), and emerging (electrochemical, supercritical fluid, mechanochemical, and ionic liquids processing) technologies. Mechanical/physical technologies are commonly employed to separate RPMs from nonmetallic components in a pre-treatment process. A pyrometallurgical process is often used for RPM recovery, although the expensive equipment required has limited its use in small and medium-sized enterprises. Hydrometallurgical processing is effective and easy to operate, with high selectivity of target metals and high recovery efficiency of RPMs, compared to pyrometallurgy. Biometallurgy, though, has shown the most promise for leaching RPMs from urban mines, because of its low cost and environmental friendliness. Newly developed technologies—electrochemical, supercritical fluid, ionic liquid, and mechanochemical—have offered new choices and achieved some success in laboratory experiments, especially as efficient and environmentally friendly methods of recycling RPMs. With continuing advances in science and technology, more technologies will no doubt be developed in this field, and be able to contribute to the sustainability of RPM mining.

Abstract:Recovering valuable materials from waste streams is critical to the transition to a circular economy with reduced environmental damages caused by resource extraction activities. Municipal and industrial wastewaters contain a variety of materials, such as nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), lithium, and rare earth elements, which can be recovered as value-added products. Owing to their modularity, convenient operation and control, and the non-requirement of chemical dosage, electrochemical technologies offer a great promise for resource recovery in small-scale, decentralized systems. Here, we review three emerging electrochemical technologies for materials recovery applications: electrosorption based on carbonaceous and intercalation electrodes, electrochemical redox processes, and electrochemically induced precipitation. We highlight the mechanisms for achieving selective materials recovery in these processes. We also present an overview of the advantages and limitations of these technologies, as well as the key challenges that need to be overcome for their deployment in real-world systems to achieve cost-effective and sustainable materials recovery.

Abstract:Waste recycling as secondary source has become important from the environmental perspective and the circular economy. In this context, any waste can become raw material to manufacture other products, such as nanoparticles. Thus, this study aims to provide a descriptive and critical view of metal recovery techniques and later use them as raw materials for nanoparticle synthesis. After scoping searches, an investigation was carried out and found a gap in the research on synthesizing nanoparticles from secondary sources. The possible technologies to recover metals are hydrometallurgical processes, pyrolysis, and bioleaching followed by purification processes. The advantages and disadvantages were discussed. Based on this analysis, hydrometallurgical processing was identified as the most suitable method and, consequently, the most used method for synthesizing nanoparticles. There is a difference in the size and shapes of nanoparticles synthesized by secondary sources and commercial salts.

Abstract:The number of spent batteries is enormous, causing tremendous environmental pressure and waste of resources. It is promising to recycle metal resources from spent batteries and prepare fresh electrode materials. This review systematically summarizes the current technologies (pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, and direct recovery) of recovering metal resources from spent batteries and the strategies of transforming recovered metal resources into electrode materials for various energy storage devices (lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, lead-acid batteries, Zn-air batteries, etc.). Herein, bibliometrics is used to summarize the research of the last 20 years in this field and future challenges are put forward. Moreover, it also predicts that the direct use of active materials from spent batteries and compounding them with low-cost commercial materials could be a potential alternative to synthesizing electrode materials. We expect this work could lay a foundation for the industrial application of recycling metal resources in spent batteries to prepare electrode materials.

Abstract:<p>Wastewater treatment for heavy metals is currently transitioning from pollution remediation towards resource recovery. As a controllable and environment-friendly method, electrochemical technologies have recently gained significant attention. However, there is a lack of systematic and goal oriented summarize of electrochemical metal recovery techniques, which has inhibited the optimized application of these methods. This review aims at recent advances in electrochemical metal recovery techniques, by comparing different electrochemical recovery methods, attempts to target recycling heavy metal resources with minimize energy consumption, boost recovery efficiency and realize the commercial application. In this review, different electrochemical recovery methods (including E-adsorption recovery, E-oxidation recovery, E-reduction recovery, and E-precipitation recovery) for recovering heavy metals are introduced, followed an analysis of their corresponding mechanisms, influencing factors, and recovery efficiencies. In addition, the mass transfer efficiency can be promoted further through optimizing electrodes and reactors, and multiple technologies (photo-electrochemical and sono-electrochemical) could to be used synergistically improve recovery efficiencies. Finally, the most promising directions for electrochemical recovery of heavy metals are discussed along with the challenges and future opportunities of electrochemical technology in recycling heavy metals from wastewater.</p>

Abstract:Efficient metal recovery from industrial wastewater facilitates addressing of the environmental hazards and resource requirements of heavy metals. The conventional electrodeposition recovery method is hampered by the limitations of interfacial ion transport in charge-transfer reactions, creating challenges for simultaneous rapid and high-quality metal recovery. Therefore, we proposed integrating a transient electric field (TE) and swirling flow (SF) to synchronously enhance bulk mass transfer and promote interfacial ion transport. We investigated the effects of the operation mode, transient frequency, and flow rate on metal recovery, enabling determination of the optimal operating conditions for rapid and efficient sequential recovery of Cu in TE&SF mode. These conditions included low and high electric levels of 0 and 4 V, a 50% duty cycle, 1 kHz frequency, and 400 L·h −1 flow rate. The kinetic coefficients of TE&SF electrodeposition were 3.5−4.3 times and 1.37−1.97 times that of single TE and SF electrodeposition, respectively. Simulating the deposition process under TE and SF conditions confirmed the efficient concurrence of interfacial ion transport and charge transfer under TE and SF synergy, which achieved rapid and high-quality metal recovery. Therefore, the combined deposition strategy is considered an effective technique for reducing metal pollution and promoting resource recycling.

Abstract:The global shortage of zinc mines makes the extraction of zinc from zinc-containing wastes a hot research topic. Most kinds of steel mill dust (SMD) cannot be directly returned to the ironmaking and steelmaking processes due to their zinc content. A large amount of SMD produced during steelmaking has become a major challenge for steel plants due to environmental pollution, health issues and land scarcity. Lots of processes for recovering metals from SMD have been developed to comprehensively utilize them and solve these environmental problems. Zinc in SMD can be recovered by these technologies, and the residue can be used as raw material for ironmaking. In this work, the sources and characteristics of SMD from different processes were analyzed firstly. Then, the mechanisms of physical, hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and pyrometallurgy–hydrometallurgy combined processes for SMD disposal are presented, and these methods are compared in terms of energy consumption, process complexity and industrial application. Finally, suggestions and prospects for utilization of SMD are put forward.

Abstract:Mechanochemistry with solvent-free and environmentally friendly characteristics is one of the most promising alternatives to traditional liquid-phase-based reactions, demonstrating epoch-making significance in the realization of different types of chemistry. Mechanochemistry utilizes mechanical energy to promote physical and chemical transformations to design complex molecules and nanostructured materials, encourage dispersion and recombination of multiphase components, and accelerate reaction rates and efficiencies via highly reactive surfaces. In particular, mechanochemistry deserves special attention because it is capable of endowing energy materials with unique characteristics and properties. Herein, the latest advances and progress in mechanochemistry for the preparation and modification of energy materials are reviewed. An outline of the basic knowledge, methods, and characteristics of different mechanochemical strategies is presented, distinguishing this review from most mechanochemistry reviews that only focus on ball-milling. Next, this outline is followed by a detailed and insightful discussion of mechanochemistry-involved energy conversion and storage applications. The discussion comprehensively covers aspects of energy transformations from mechanical/optical/chemical energy to electrical energy. Finally, next-generation advanced energy materials are proposed. This review is intended to bring mechanochemistry to the frontline and guide this burgeoning field of interdisciplinary research for developing advanced energy materials with greener mechanical force.

Abstract:This work represents a combination of mechanochemistry with eco-friendly low-cost natural organic acids to recover metal ions from spent lithium-ion battery (LIB) cathode materials. The effects of various reaction parameters on the metal extraction efficiency during the mechanochemical process were investigated. The results showed that under the optimal recovery conditions, that is, 2 mL of H2O2, mass ratio of LiCoO2 (LCO) to alginic acid of 1:10, rotation speed of 500 rpm, and grinding time of 4 h, the recovery efficiencies of Li and Co were 97.58 and 98.59%, respectively. The reaction mechanism of the mechanochemical process was discussed and verified. LCO combines with alginic acid and converts into water-soluble alginate under the action of a mechanical force and a reducing agent, and the metal ions are extracted and recovered in the subsequent water leaching process. In addition, the preliminary environmental and economic evaluation of the recycling process was assessed. The mechanochemical route proposed in this work can achieve green, efficient, and low-cost recovery of cathode scrap, which is a prospective guideline for the future industrial recycling of spent LIBs.

A Novel Route for Copper Recovery from Waste Printed Circuit Boards Via Mechanochemistry

Abstract:This paper mainly introduces a novel route for copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) via mechanochemistry. Copper in the crust is most commonly present as copper-iron-sulfide and copper-sulfide minerals (about 80%) and there exist many methods to extract copper from cooper ores in mineral engineering. It seems an alternative to transform the metallic components in obsolete materials to their corresponding compounds common in nature. By means of mechanochemistry, copper and sulfur were verified to form into copper sulfide in the model experiment, where, meanwhile, the optimal ball milling time was determined (20 minutes). In the real experiment, WPCB fragments and sulfur were mixed and ground for 20 minutes, no copper was detected by XRD analysis but copper sulfide was left. After leaching in sulfuric acid (3M) and hydrogen peroxide (30 wt%), the yield of copper reached nearly 95% and, also, resin was conserved for further utilization. This paper, for the first time, reports the green recovery route combining mechanical activation and sulfurization and may provide an alternative in other studies of metal recovery.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Molten salt is an excellent medium for chemical reaction, energy transfer, and storage. Molten salt innovative technologies should be developed to recover metals from secondary resources and reserve metals from primary natural sources. Among these technologies, molten salt electrolysis is an economic and environment-friendly method to extract metals from waste materials. From the perspective of molten salt characteristics, the application of molten salts in chemistry, electrochemistry, energy, and thermal storage should be comprehensively elaborated. This review discusses further directions for the research and development of molten salt electrolysis and their use for metal recovery from various metal wastes, such as magnet scrap, nuclear waste, and cemented carbide scrap. Attention is placed on the development of various electrolysis methods for different metal containing wastes, overcoming some problems in electrolytes, electrodes, and electrolytic cells. Special focus is given to future development directions for current associated processing obstacles.</p>

Abstract:Electronic waste is widespread across the globe comprises wide range of elements, growing exponential recent years and even categorized as hazardous if the elements like lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, and hexavalent chromium etc. are present beyond the permissible quantities. They may also be important secondary resources if processed in eco-friendly manner for secured supply of contained metals. Bio-extraction of metals from E-waste with microbes such as bacteria and fungi is being increasingly explored to meet the twin objectives of resource recycling and pollution mitigation. This review focuses on the biological extraction techniques including an assessment has been made to quantify the different E-waste and their metal compositions, microbes used, metal leaching efficiency etc. and proposes that the biological recovery allows the cycling of metals by a process close to natural biogeochemical cycles reducing the demand for resources such as ores, energy, or landfill space.

Abstract:The increasing accumulation of rock waste obtained due to ore processing and its environmental impacts, such as acid mine drainage and elevated concentrations of heavy metals in soils, necessitates the transformation of mining technologies based on the concept of circular waste management. The research is aimed at improving the parameters of the mechanical activation effect produced on technogenic georesources, as well as at expanding the application scope of disintegrators in the field of using the partial backfill of the mined-out space when developing stratified deposits. In this regard, the research purpose was to substantiate the parameters of extracting metals from enrichment tailings using their mechanochemical activation to ensure cyclic waste management. The research involved the application of three-dimensional interpolation methods used for processing the data and the graphical representation. As a result, the following was found to be characteristic of the waste of the Sadonsky mine management. The degree of extracting zinc from pre-activated tailings increases logarithmically when the H2SO4 concentration and the NaCl proportion decrease 3.5 times. The degree of extracting lead from the activated tailings increases according to the Fourier law when decreasing the NaCl mass concentration, and an optimal range of the H2SO4 (0.38-0.51%) proportion decreases six times. One of the key results of the research is the justification of expanding the scope of applying disintegrators in the case of a directed activation influence exerted on the components of the stowing strips. The obtained results expand the understanding of the mechanism of the influence of the mechanochemical activation of dry tailings on the reactivity unevenness when extracting several metals from them.
