Abstract:Recovering valuable materials from waste streams is critical to the transition to a circular economy with reduced environmental damages caused by resource extraction activities. Municipal and industrial wastewaters contain a variety of materials, such as nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), lithium, and rare earth elements, which can be recovered as value-added products. Owing to their modularity, convenient operation and control, and the non-requirement of chemical dosage, electrochemical technologies offer a great promise for resource recovery in small-scale, decentralized systems. Here, we review three emerging electrochemical technologies for materials recovery applications: electrosorption based on carbonaceous and intercalation electrodes, electrochemical redox processes, and electrochemically induced precipitation. We highlight the mechanisms for achieving selective materials recovery in these processes. We also present an overview of the advantages and limitations of these technologies, as well as the key challenges that need to be overcome for their deployment in real-world systems to achieve cost-effective and sustainable materials recovery.

Abstract:With the rapid increase of new energy industry, the shortage of critical metals for new energy industry, such as Ni, Co, V, and Pt, has received global attention. The hazardous spent catalysts from traditional energy industry contain a series of critical metals, which should be safe disposal and even value-added utilized. However, the recovery of critical metals from these valuable wastes has not been well accepted. In this review, the characteristics and recycling necessity of spent catalysts are described in the start section, and then the current progress on stepwise recycling techniques of three typical spent catalysts are summarized, which are petroleum refining hydrogenation catalysts, platinum group metals catalysts and selective catalytic reduction catalysts. The regeneration and value-added utilization examples of these catalysts have been discussed and prospected. An overview of the advantage and disadvantage features of these techniques is presented, associating with the environmental assessment. At the end of the paper, the evolutions of metal elements and species of the recycling process are emphasized for rational designs and considerations from the mechanism of molecular level. The further perspective on the more practical value-added utilization is highlighted. This review set up a closed-loop conversion bridge from traditional energy wastes to new energy materials.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in electronic wastes (e-wastes) recycling for metal recovery because the fast depletion of worldwide reserves for primary resources is gradually becoming a matter of concern. E-wastes contain metals with a concentration higher than that present in the primary ores, which renders them as an apt resource for metal recovery. Owing to such aspects, research is progressing well to address several issues related to e-waste recycling for metal recovery through both chemical and biological routes. Base metals, for example, Cu, Ni, Zn, Al, etc., can be easily leached out through the typical chemical (with higher kinetics) and microbial (with eco-friendly benefits) routes under ambient temperature conditions in contrast to other metals. This feature makes them the most suitable candidates to be targeted primarily for metal leaching from these waste streams. Hence, the current piece of review aims at providing updated information pertinent to e-waste recycling through chemical and microbial treatment methods. Individual process routes are compared and reviewed with focus on non-ferrous metal leaching (with particular emphasis on base metals dissolution) from some selected e-waste streams. Future outlooks are discussed on the suitability of these two important extractive metallurgical routes for e-waste recycling at a scale-up level along with concluding remarks.

Abstract:<p>Wastewater treatment for heavy metals is currently transitioning from pollution remediation towards resource recovery. As a controllable and environment-friendly method, electrochemical technologies have recently gained significant attention. However, there is a lack of systematic and goal oriented summarize of electrochemical metal recovery techniques, which has inhibited the optimized application of these methods. This review aims at recent advances in electrochemical metal recovery techniques, by comparing different electrochemical recovery methods, attempts to target recycling heavy metal resources with minimize energy consumption, boost recovery efficiency and realize the commercial application. In this review, different electrochemical recovery methods (including E-adsorption recovery, E-oxidation recovery, E-reduction recovery, and E-precipitation recovery) for recovering heavy metals are introduced, followed an analysis of their corresponding mechanisms, influencing factors, and recovery efficiencies. In addition, the mass transfer efficiency can be promoted further through optimizing electrodes and reactors, and multiple technologies (photo-electrochemical and sono-electrochemical) could to be used synergistically improve recovery efficiencies. Finally, the most promising directions for electrochemical recovery of heavy metals are discussed along with the challenges and future opportunities of electrochemical technology in recycling heavy metals from wastewater.</p>

Abstract:Noble metals are integral materials to chemical and electronics industries for their unmatched chemical inertness, electrical conductivity, and catalytic activity. However, the growing demand for noble metals such as Pt, Pd, and Au is outpacing the dwindling supply, and without new recycle strategies these critical noble metal resources will run out. Therefore, energy and resource efficient noble metal recycling technologies are critical to develop sustainable use of these scarce and valuable resources. Recently, electrification of chemical process units has been receiving justifiable attention as an easily scalable means of increasing energy and material sustainability in industry, particularly for chemical separations. In particular, the incorporation of redox-active materials has been met with great success for chemical energy storage and chemical separations due to enhanced charge transfer and easily tunable target ion interactions. Here, we introduce an electrochemically mediated platform for capture, release, and up-concentration of noble metal complexes from mining ore, electronic waste, and valuable elements in industrial manufacturing, where favorable charge transfer binding of noble metals to electrode bound redox sites enables selective capture of target noble metals over other common competitors – all with the flick of a switch. Highlights of our system are its high uptake (>200 mg/g), selectivity (>5 vs competing ions), energy efficiency ( 5000 reuse cycles), and scalability to flow system. Technoeconomic analysis of our system compared to current industrial separation technologies indicates economically significant improvements in capital and operating costs with our electrochemical noble metal recycling platform. By lowering the economic barrier of noble metal recycling, these critical materials can be sustainably used and reused for years to come.

Abstract:The increasing emission of electronic waste (e-waste) accelerates the depletion of natural metal resources and raises growing concerns for human health and environmental sustainability. Herein, the valuable metal recovery driven by the development of a circular economy has increasingly become a focal point in research. Recovering metals from e-waste can rationally allocate resources and significantly alleviate environmental issues; however, it remains challenging. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) provide an ideal alternative for these separation and recovery processes due to their green properties. This article reviews recent advances in the recovery of metals from e-waste using DESs, encompassing spent battery materials, printed circuit boards, lamp phosphor waste, and end-of-life permanent magnets. Recovery approaches involving redox/coordination leaching, solvent extraction, precipitation, and electrodeposition are discussed within the framework of DESs' unique solvent characteristics, eco-design principles, and technology features. Finally, challenges facing this emerging recovery technology are outlined while future prospects are also envisioned.

Abstract:Heavy metals-laden industrial wastewater represents both a threat to ecosystems and human health and, in some instances, a potential source of valuable metals however the presence of organic ligands that bind the metals in heavy metal complexes (HMCs) renders metal removal (and, where appropriate, recovery) difficult. Electrochemical-based oxidation and reduction processes represent a potentially promising means of degrading the organic ligands and reducing their ability to retain the metals in solution. In this state-of-the-art review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the current status on use of electrochemical redox technologies for organic ligand degradation and subsequent heavy metal removal and recovery from industrial wastewaters. The principles and degradation mechanism of common organic ligands by various types of electrochemical redox technologies are discussed in this review and consideration given to recent progress in electrode materials synthesis, cell architecture, and operation of electrochemical redox systems. Furthermore, we highlight the current challenges in application of electrochemical redox technologies for treatment of HMC-containing wastewaters including (i) limited understanding of the chemical composition of industrial wastewaters, (ii) constrained mass transfer process affecting the direct/indirect electron transfer, (iii) absence of approaches to convert recovered metal into high-value-added products, and (iv) restricted semi-or full-industrial-scale application of these technologies. Potential strategies for improvement are accordingly provided to guide efforts in addressing these challenges in future research.

Abstract:Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a hazardous waste but can also be a potential secondary resource for valuable metals, such as Zn and Fe. Given the increased awareness of carbon emission reduction, energy conservation, and environmental protection, hydrometallurgical technologies for the detoxification and resource use of EAFD have been developing rapidly. This work summarizes the generation mechanisms, compositions, and characteristics of EAFD and presents a critical review of various hydrometallurgical treatment methods for EAFD, e.g., acid leaching, alkaline leaching, salt leaching, and pretreatment-enhanced leaching methods. Simultaneously, the phase transformation mechanisms of zinc-containing components in acid and alkali solutions and pretreatment processes are expounded. Finally, two novel combined methods, i.e., oxygen pressure sulfuric acid leaching combined with composite catalyst preparation, and synergistic roasting of EAFD and municipal solid waste incineration fly ash combined with alkaline leaching, are proposed, which can provide future development directions to completely recycling EAFD by recovering valuable metals and using zinc residue.

Abstract:The number of spent batteries is enormous, causing tremendous environmental pressure and waste of resources. It is promising to recycle metal resources from spent batteries and prepare fresh electrode materials. This review systematically summarizes the current technologies (pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, and direct recovery) of recovering metal resources from spent batteries and the strategies of transforming recovered metal resources into electrode materials for various energy storage devices (lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, lead-acid batteries, Zn-air batteries, etc.). Herein, bibliometrics is used to summarize the research of the last 20 years in this field and future challenges are put forward. Moreover, it also predicts that the direct use of active materials from spent batteries and compounding them with low-cost commercial materials could be a potential alternative to synthesizing electrode materials. We expect this work could lay a foundation for the industrial application of recycling metal resources in spent batteries to prepare electrode materials.

Abstract:Under the goal of global sustainable development, the new energy vehicle industry is evolving rapidly, leading to a proliferation of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The recycling of LIBs is key to the sustainable development of the new energy industry, which is consistent with the concept of circular economy as well. And the green extraction of critical metals is the core part of the development. As an alternative to traditional pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, emerging mechanochemical technology provides a new approach for high efficiency and green recycling of critical metals from spent LIBs, as it has the advantages of easy operation, flexibility, and short processing time. This article reviews the state of the art of mechanochemical technology in the recycling of critical metals from spent LIBs. Based on numerous practices, a framework including mechanochemical activation, organic reaction, inorganic reaction, redox reaction, gas-solid reaction, and solid-phase synthesis was constructed. These practices have proved that mechanochemical technology can provide a greener and more sustainable solution for recycling critical metals from spent LIBs. The metals can be transformed into high-value metal products at room temperature and under ordinary pressure, leading to efficient recycling of critical metals and significant reduction of wastes.

Abstract:The unique chemical and physical properties of metals mean that they are extensively utilized by industry in a huge variety of applications, including electronics, materials, industrial catalysts and chemicals. The increased consumer demand from a growing population worldwide with rising aspirations for a better life has resulted in concerns over the security of supply and accessibility of these valuable elements. As such, there is a growing need to develop alternative methods to recover them from waste repositories, current or historic, both for hazard avoidance and potentially, as a new source of metals for industry. Phytoextraction (the use of plants for the recovery of metals from waste repositories) is a green and novel technique for metal recovery, which, if done with the goal of resource supply rather than hazard mitigation, is termed “phytomining”. The ability for plants to form metallic nanoparticles as a consequence of phytoextraction could make the recovered metal ideally suited for utilization in green chemical technologies, such as catalysis. This review focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to elemental sustainability and highlights important aspects of metal lifecycle analysis, metal waste sources (including mine tailings), phytoextraction and potential green chemical applications that may result from the integration of these approaches.

Abstract:Electronic waste (e-waste), including waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), has caused global concern owing to its potential environmental pollution and rich resource content. Previous studies have indicated that urban mining for metals recycling can decrease energy consumption and pollutants emission compared to the extraction of metals from natural minerals. During the production of PCBs, a large amount of spent tin stripping solution (TSS) is simultaneously generated, containing the significant amounts of metal ions and residue nitric acid. In this study, the coprocessing of waste PCBs and spent TSS at room temperature was proposed and investigated, with the aim of developing an environmentally sound process to address these problems. This coprocessing approach proved to be effective. 87% of the Sn-Pb solder, 30% of the Cu, 29% of the Fe, and 78% of the Zn was leached from waste PCBs with spent TSS after 2 h, at room temperature. Moreover, approximately 87% of the electronic components were dismantled from waste PCBs. About 99% of the Sn, Pb, Fe, Cu, and Zn were recovered from the leaching solutions by chemical precipitation. The proposed green process has substantial advantages over traditional recovery methods of heating waste PCBs, in terms of both material and energy efficiency.

Abstract:The continuous dumping of industrial solid wastes into the immediate environment is incommodious since these waste materials cause pollution and serious hazards to human health. In addition, these solid wastes are complex and consist of toxic chemical substances, heavy metals, and valuable metals, hence warranting treatment before disposal. Bioleaching is a green and sustainable technology for the solubilization and mobilization of metals from solid matrices. The leaching efficacy is contingent on the types and physiology of the organisms, the elemental content of the solid wastes, and the presence of appropriate bioprocess parameters at optimum conditions. Extremophilic microbes, including thermophiles, acidophiles, alkaliphiles, and halophiles, are recognized as excellent biological agents for the efficient bioextraction of metals from industrial solid wastes due to their aptitude for survival under harsh bioleaching conditions. Therefore, this review provides insights into the employability of extremophilic microorganisms as a biofactory for the recovery of valuable metals from various industrial solid wastes. More so, it discusses the sustainability of the bioleaching technique in terms of its life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis.

Abstract:With the new round of technology revolution and lithium-ion batteries decommissioning tide, how to efficiently recover the valuable metals in the massively spent lithium iron phosphate batteries and regenerate cathode materials has become a critical problem of solid waste reuse in the new energy industry. In this paper, we review the hazards and value of used lithium iron phosphate batteries and evaluate different recycling technologies in recent years from the perspectives of process feasibility, environment, and economy, including traditional processes such as mechanical milling, magnetic separation, and flotation, as well as pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes. This paper also introduces the highly promising salt electrolysis and direct regeneration restoration technologies, and we pay special attention to simple and efficient new methods for lithium replenishment restoration, which will provide new insights for a wide range of researchers to implement in-depth experiments.

Abstract:Huge amounts of manganese-rich solid residues are yearly produced worldwide by industrial electrolysis, calling for advanced methods of recycling in the context of the circular economy. Here, we review manganese recycling with focus on ore reserves, electrolytic production, residue stockpiling and environmental impact, reducing the amount of residue and improving metal separation, and recycling the residues. Diposal techniques include dry disposal, wet disposal and fire roasting disposal. Residues can be recycled in buildings, functional materials and fertilizers.

Abstract:The recycling of used lithium-ion batteries has become a growing concern. As a large number of rare metal elements are present in waste lithium-ion batteries, recycling them can significantly improve resource utilization and reduce the material cost of battery production. The process of recycling used lithium-ion batteries involves three main technology parts: pretreatment, material recovery, and cathode material recycling. Pretreatment includes discharge treatment, uniform crushing, and removing impurities. Material-recovery technology mainly involves traditional pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical technologies, as well as the developing biometallurgy technology. Analysis of existing data shows that pretreatment technology is crucial for the recycling of used lithium-ion batteries. Hydrometallurgical technology and pyro-hydrometallurgical technology are expected to be the most suitable industrialization technology paths in the future, with biometallurgical technology and direct recycling technology providing a low-pollution development direction. This article summarizes the different pretreatment techniques and valuable metal-recovery pathways. The advantages and disadvantages of each method were evaluated. The economic costs, environmental benefits, and degree of industrialization of each method were assessed. The possible development directions of various methods are summarized to provide reference for future research.

Abstract:Recycling metals from wastes is essential to a resource-efficient economy, and increasing attention from researchers has. been devoted to this process in recent years, with emphasis on mechanochemistry technology. The mechanochemical method can make technically feasible the recycling of metals from some specific wastes, such as cathode ray tube (CRT) funnel glass and tungsten carbide waste, while significantly improving recycling efficiency. Particle size reduction, specific surface area increase, crystalline structure decomposition and bond breakage have been identified as the main processes occurring during the mechanochemical operations in the studies. The activation energy required decreases and reaction activity increases, after these changes with activation progress. This study presents an overall review of the applications of mechanoehemistry to metal recycling from wastes. The reaction mechanisms; equipment used, method procedures, and optimized operating parameters of each case, as well as methods enhancing the activation process are discussed in detail. The issues to be addressed and perspectives on the future development of mechanochemistry applied for metal recycling are also presented.
Innovative Techniques for Electrolytic Manganese Residue Utilization: A Review

Abstract:Electrolytic Manganese Residue (EMR) is a secondary material generated during the process of manganese production, poses significant environmental challenges, including land consumption and contamination threats to soil and water bodies due to its heavy metal content, soluble manganese, ammonia nitrogen, and disposal issues. This review thoroughly examines EMR, emphasizing its metallurgical principles, environmental impacts, and sustainable treatment methods. We critically analyze various approaches for EMR management, including resource recovery, utilization of construction materials, and advanced treatment techniques to mitigate its environmental challenges. Through an extensive review of recent EMR-related literature and case studies, we highlight innovative strategies for EMR valorization, such as the extraction of valuable metals, conversion into supplementary cementitious materials, and its application in environmental remediation. Our findings suggest that integrating metallurgical principles with environmental engineering practices can unlock EMR’s potential as a resource, contributing to the circular economy and reducing the environmental hazards associated with its disposal. This study aims to deepen the understanding of EMR’s comprehensive utilization, offering insights into future research directions and practical applications for achieving sustainable management of electrolytic manganese waste. Finally, we propose some recommendations to address the issue of EMR, intending to offer guidance for the proper disposal and effective exploitation of EMR.

Abstract:Waste integrated circuits, with underlying resource attributes and environmental risks, are complex in composition. Current processes suffer from high resource inputs, excessive pollutant emissions and incomplete treatment of varied species. Therefore, a comprehensive resource recycling and safe disposal process integrated with precious metal enrichment, non-metal resource utilization, and organic detoxification was proposed. The copper and non-metals from waste ICs served as in-situ precious metal collector, slagging former and reducing agent for alternative to partial chemical inputs. Batch experiments indicated that optimized parameters enabled the recycling efficiencies of 94.3 %, 96.8 % and 98.4 % for copper, gold and silver, respectively. Meanwhile, oxide component, yielded as silicate slag, was synthesized into glass ceramics via high-temperature sintering. Furthermore, organic conversion process revealed that high-temperature smelting catalyzed bromine removal and contaminant detoxification, with decomposed reductive hydrocarbons facilitating metal capture in turn. And the capture mechanism was disclosed form thermodynamics and microdroplet motion perspectives. As process evaluation indicates, proposed recycling route allows remarkable reductions in negative environmental response and economic investment. In this work, metal recycling, waste minimization and pollutant detoxification were attained synergistically without residue, which contributes a novel insight into the disposal of comparable e-wastes.
