Abstract:By the method of exciton dynamics, direct formulas were deduced about the relationship between the tunneling current and the position of the tip for both single and dimer adsorbates when the purely coherent memory function is independent of time, and the application environment for these practical models were discussed. In addition, they were also used to investigate the effect of the substrate’s thickness on the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) images and interpret the STM images of Au(110) for both 2×1 and 3×1 reconstructed surfaces. The results are in good agreement with experiments and other theory.

Abstract:Local density approximation within the framework of the density functional theory is applied to calculate the scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images of Ar atoms adsorbed on a graphite sheet (Ar/graphite system). It is found that the optimal site of adsorbed Ar atom is at the top of the centre of the carbon hexagon and its equilibrium distance from the graphite surface is about 3.20 Angstrom. We demonstrate that it is the hybridization of the C 2 p electronic states with the Ar 3 p and 4 s electronic states, which renders Ar atoms visible in the STM experiment.

Abstract:The inelastic scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been shown recently (Loth et al. Science 329, 1628 (2010)) to be extendable as to access the nanosecond, spin-resolved dynamics of magnetic adatoms and molecules. Here we analyze theoretically this novel tool by considering the time-resolved spin dynamics of a single adsorbed Fe atom excited by a tunneling current pulse from a spin-polarized STM tip. The adatom spin-configuration can be controlled and probed by applying voltage pulses between the substrate and the spin-polarized STM tip. We demonstrate how, in a pump-probe manner, the relaxation dynamics of the sample spin is manifested in the spin-dependent tunneling current. Our model calculations are based on the scattering theory in a wave-packet formulation. The scheme is nonpertubative and hence, is valid for all voltages. The numerical results for the tunneling probability and the conductance are contrasted with the prediction of simple analytical models and compared with experiments.

Abstract:As a fundamental and frequently referred concept in modern chemistry, the molecular orbital plays a vital role in the science of single molecules, which has become an active field in recent years. For the study of single molecules, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been proven to be a powerful scientific technique. Utilizing specific distribution of the molecular orbitals at spatial, energy, and spin scales, STM can explore many properties of single molecule systems, such as geometrical configuration, electronic structure, magnetic polarization, and so on. Various interactions between the substrate and adsorbed molecules are also understood in terms of the molecular orbitals. Molecular engineering methods, such as mode-selective chemistry based on the molecular orbitals, and resonance tunneling between the molecular orbitals of the molecular sample and STM tip, have stimulated new advances of single molecule science.

Abstract:Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) topographical images and inelastic electron tunneling spectra (IETS) of a cis-2-butene molecule adsorbed on a Pd(110) surface have been simulated by first-principles calculations. Calculations have eliminated the ambiguity between the STM image and the adsorption orientation caused by the symmetry of the system and local chemical environment. A combination of STM images and IETS spectra has been shown to be particularly useful in determining the configuration of the molecule on the surface.
Tracking Electron Dynamics of Single Molecules in Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Junctions with Laser Pulses

Abstract:On the basis of real-time simulations, we devise a method to extend the capability of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to track the electronic dynamics of molecules on a material's surface with the ultrafast temporal resolution of laser pulses. The intrinsic mechanism of visualization of electronic dynamics by measuring tunneling charge is attributed to the interference between the electronic oscillations stimulated by pump and probe pulses. The charge-transfer rate from molecule to the surrounding environment can be estimated with the decay time of electronic dynamics, which can also be detected by measuring the tunneling charge across the STM junction. Moreover, it is found that the tunneling charge can be varied precisely by changing the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the pulses, and this phase-dependence of tunnelling diminishes as the duration of incident laser pulses increases. The proposed scheme provides an alternative means for visualization of electron dynamics of single molecules by measuring tunnelling charges.
Efficient Method for Fast Simulation of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy with A Tip Effect

Abstract:On the basis of Bardeens perturbation theory on electron tunneling and inspired by Paz et al.s study, a new expression for the tunneling current between the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tip and sample has been obtained, and it provides us with an efficient method to simulate STM images. The method can be implemented in any code of first-principles computing software, which offers the wave functions of the tip and sample, calculated independently at the same footing, as input. By calculating the integral with fast Fourier transform (FFT), simulating the STM image of a given sample surface by a database of different tips on a PC turns out to be not a time-consuming work. Compared with Paz et al.s method, our method abandons the application of the vacuum Green function and possesses better computing efficiency, fewer parameters, and more reasonable simulated results especially at lower computing cost. Simple tipsample systems, such as HH and Pd2Ag2, are taken as benchmarks to test our method. The topographic images of a CO molecule adsorbed on a Cu(111) surface obtained by using a tungsten tip and a CO-terminated tip are also simulated, and the simulated results are in good agreement with the experimental ones.

Abstract:The theory of inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) and motions of single adsorbed atoms and molecules on metal surfaces induced by vibrational excitation with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is reviewed. The theory of STM-IETS is described using the adsorbate-induced resonance model. Elementary processes of how an adsorbate overcomes the potential barrier along the reaction coordinate (RC) by inelastic tunneling current are described with a focus on direct excitation of the RC mode by coherent and incoherent vibrational ladder climbing and an indirect one through anharmonic coupling to a mode excited by tunneling electrons. Action spectroscopy of single molecule motions is also discussed. The latter allows a direct access to the vibrational density of states, which can not be otherwise observed in the STM-IETS because of a competition between the elastic and inelastic tunneling currents.

Comparative Studies on the Constant-height and Constant-current STM Images of W, Mo, Pt and Pd Tips

Abstract:The constant height and constant current Scanning Tunneling Microscopy(STM) images of W, Mo, Pt and Pd tips were simulated respectively by the method of exciton dynamics. The results show that, for the constant current STM images, the spacial resolution is independent of the types of the tips' materials; but for the constant height STM images, the spacial resolution of the current densities is strongly dependent on the types of the tips' materials. The spacial resolution of the current density of the Pd tip is better than that of W and Mo tips, and the spacial resolution of the current density of the Pt tip is worse than that of W and Mo tips.

Abstract:Scanning tunneling microscope (STM) provides an atomic-scale characterization tool. To this end, high-resolution measurements and accurate simulations must closely cooperate. Emerging experimental techniques, e.g., substrate spacers and tip modifications, suppress metallic couplings and improve the resolution. On the other hand, development of STM simulation methods was inactive in the past decade. Conventional simulations focus on the electronic structure of the substrate, often overlooking detailed descriptions of the tip states. Meanwhile, the overwhelming usage of periodic boundary conditions ensures effective simulations of only neutral systems. In this Perspective, we highlight the recent progress that takes the effects of both tip and substrate into account under either Tersoff-Hamann or Bardeen's approximation, which provides an accurate analysis of measured high-resolution STM results, uncovers underlying concepts, and rationally designs experimental protocols for important chemical systems. We hope this Perspective will stimulate broad interest in advanced STM simulations, highlighting the way forward for STM investigations that involve complex geometrical and electronic structures.

Abstract:The electronic structure of tungsten tip of (111) surface under external electric fields is studies by using discrete variational-local density functional method. The tunneling orbitals(TOs) and the charge distributions of the tip are calculated and analysed in detail under different conditions. The results show that the components of TOs are sensitive to the polarity, amplitude of the external electric field and the distances between tip and sample. It is found that although 5dz2 has some contribution to TOs, it is not dominant, which differs from the previous theoretical calculations. The dominating contributions are from 5dxz and 5dyz orbitals under positive bias voltages. However, under negative bias voltages, TOs are made of many orbitals including 6s orbital. Our results can explain the phenomenon in STM experiments that the resolution of STM images will be changed using the same tip when the polarity of the electric field is reversed, and can also predict that if one uses tungsten tip of (111) surface, the inverted STM images should be observed.

Abstract:The reaction and adsorption of organic molecules at electrode-electrolyte interfaces have been intensively studied to understand the fundamental processes at the electrochemical interface. Electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM) has been recognized as a powerful tool to investigate potential-induced structural transition and reaction at the solid/liquid interface with atomic and molecular resolution. This review article presents some recent progress in ECSTM application for exploring potential-dependent chemical reactions and phase transitions. Details of the molecular adsorption structure and structural transition controlled by electrode potential are revealed by high resolution STM images. The ability to control the adlayer structure is important for modulating the structure and function of the electrode surfaces.

Abstract:While Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) has evolved as an ideal tool to study surface chemistry at the atomic scale, the identification of adsorbed species is often not straightforward. This paper describes a way to reliably identify H2O, CO and O-2 on the TiO2 anatase (101) surface with STM. These molecules are of a key importance in the surface chemistry of this and many other (photo-) catalytic materials. They exhibit a wide variety of contrasts in STM images, depending on the tip condition. With clean, metallic tips the molecules appear very similar, i.e., as bright, dimer-like features located in the proximity of surface Ti-5c atoms. However, each species exhibits a specific response to the electric field applied by the STM tip. It is shown that this tip adsorbate interaction can be used to reliably ascertain the identity of such species. The tip adsorbate interactions, together with comparison of experimental and calculated STM images, are used to analyse and revisit the assignments of molecular adsorbed species reported in recent studies.

Abstract:Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) has been a unique and powerful tool in the study of molecular systems among various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. This benefits from the local probing ability for the atomically resolved structural and electronic characterization by the STM tip. Moreover, by using the STM tip one can modify a given structure and thus control the physical and chemical properties of molecules at a single-molecule level. The rapid developments in the past 30 years have extended the functions of STM far beyond characterization. It has shown the flexibility to combine STM with other techniques by making use of the advantages of the STM tip, demonstrating important applications in the growing nanotechnology. Here we review some recent progresses in our laboratory on single molecule chemistry by taking advantage of tip-assisted local approaches, such as the identification of specific orbitals or states of molecules on surfaces, tip-induced single-molecule manipulation, atomically resolved chemical reactions in photochemistry and tip-induced electroluminescence. We expect more joint techniques to emerge in the near future by using the unique advantages of STM tip, providing more powerful tools for the growing requirements of new materials design and the mechanism of chemical reactions at the molecular scale.
Theory of Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy of a Magnetic Adatom on a Metallic Surface

Abstract:A comprehensive theory is presented for the voltage, temperature, and spatial dependence of the tunneling current between a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and a metallic surface with an individual magnetic adatom. Modeling the adatom by a nondegenerate Anderson impurity, a general expression is derived for a weak tunneling current in terms of the dressed impurity Green function, the impurity-free surface Green function, and the tunneling matrix elements. This generalizes Fano's analysis to the interacting case. The differential-conductance lineshapes seen in recent STM experiments with the tip directly over the magnetic adatom are reproduced within our model, as is the rapid decay, \sim 10Å, of the low-bias structure as one moves the tip away from the adatom. With our simple model for the electronic structure of the surface, there is no dip in the differential conductance at approximately one lattice spacing from the magnetic adatom, but rather we see a resonant enhancement. The formalism for tunneling into small clusters of magnetic adatoms is developed.

Abstract:The precise tuning of local spin states in adsorbed organometallic molecules by a mechanically controlled scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip has become a focus of recent experiments. However, the underlying mechanisms remain somewhat unclear. We investigate theoretically the STM tip control of local spin states in a single iron(II) porphyrin molecule adsorbed on the Pb(111) substrate. A combined density functional theory and hierarchical equations of motion approach is employed to simulate the tip tuning process in conjunction with the complete active space self consistent field method for accurate computation of magnetic anisotropy. Our first principles-based simulation accurately reproduces the tuning of magnetic anisotropy realized in experiment. Moreover, we elucidate the evolution of geometric and electronic structures of the composite junction and disclose the delicate competition between the Kondo resonance and local spin excitation. The understanding and insight provided by the first-principles-based simulation may help to realize more fascinating quantum state manipulations.
