Abstract:Object rotation is a classical data acquisition mode in microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to capture radiographs from different angles for high-resolution 3-D reconstruction. However, this mode encounters two primary limitations: first, an undesired tradeoff arises between the field-of-view (FOV) and the spatial resolution; second, the spatial resolution is compromised due to insufficient radial sampling in the frequency domain. In this article, we present a novel acquisition paradigm called multiple Source Translations micro-CT (mSTCT) to simultaneously improve FOV and spatial resolution. In mSTCT, the FOV is enlarged by extending the source translation distance and the spatial resolution is enhanced by refining the source sample spacing to increase the radial sampling in the frequency domain. Theoretically, mSTCT can enhance the FOV and spatial resolution to their physical limits. We formulate a central slice theorem for mSTCT to elucidate its fundamental principle. Subsequently, we derive a corresponding analytical algorithm without projection rebinning or stitching for reconstruction. The physical experiments conducted in this work validate the efficacy of mSTCT in terms of FOV extension and spatial resolution enhancement. As mSTCT is trivial to implement, it holds considerable promise for diverse scenarios demanding high-resolution and large FOV in nondestructive testing (NDT) applications.

Analytical reconstructions of full-scan multiple source-translation computed tomography under large field of views

Abstract:This paper is to investigate the high-quality analytical reconstructions of multiple source-translation computed tomography (mSTCT) under an extended field of view (FOV). Under the larger FOVs, the previously proposed backprojection filtration (BPF) algorithms for mSTCT, including D-BPF and S-BPF (their differences are different derivate directions along the detector and source, respectively), make some errors and artifacts in the reconstructed images due to a backprojection weighting factor and the half-scan mode, which deviates from the intention of mSTCT imaging. In this paper, to achieve reconstruction with as little error as possible under the extremely extended FOV, we combine the full-scan mSTCT (F-mSTCT) geometry with the previous BPF algorithms to study the performance and derive a suitable redundancy-weighted function for F-mSTCT. The experimental results indicate FS-BPF can get high-quality, stable images under the extremely extended FOV of imaging a large object, though it requires more projections than FD-BPF. Finally, for different practical requirements in extending FOV imaging, we give suggestions on algorithm selection.

DX2CT: Diffusion Model for 3D CT Reconstruction from Bi or Mono-planar 2D X-ray(s)

Abstract:Computational tomography (CT) provides high-resolution medical imaging, but it can expose patients to high radiation. X-ray scanners have low radiation exposure, but their resolutions are low. This paper proposes a new conditional diffusion model, DX2CT, that reconstructs three-dimensional (3D) CT volumes from bi or mono-planar X-ray image(s). Proposed DX2CT consists of two key components: 1) modulating feature maps extracted from two-dimensional (2D) X-ray(s) with 3D positions of CT volume using a new transformer and 2) effectively using the modulated 3D position-aware feature maps as conditions of DX2CT. In particular, the proposed transformer can provide conditions with rich information of a target CT slice to the conditional diffusion model, enabling high-quality CT reconstruction. Our experiments with the bi or mono-planar X-ray(s) benchmark datasets show that proposed DX2CT outperforms several state-of-the-art methods. Abstract:X-ray scatter remains a major physics challenge in volumetric computed tomography (CT), whose physical and statistical behaviors have been commonly leveraged in order to eliminate its impact on CT image quality. In this work, we conduct an in-depth derivation of how the scatter distribution and scatter to primary ratio (SPR) will change during the spectral correction, leading to an interesting finding on the property of scatter. Such a characterization of scatter's behavior provides an analytic approach of compensating for the SPR as well as approximating the change of scatter distribution after spectral correction, even though both of them might be significantly distorted as the linearization mapping function in spectral correction could vary a lot from one detector pixel to another. We conduct an evaluation of SPR compensations (SPRCs) on a Catphan phantom and an anthropomorphic chest phantom to validate the characteristics of scatter. In addition, this scatter property is also directly adopted into CT imaging using a spectral modulator with flying focal spot technology (SMFFS) as an example to demonstrate its potential in practical applications. For cone-beam CT (CBCT) scans at both 80 and 120 kVp, CT images with accurate CT numbers can be achieved after spectral correction followed by the appropriate SPRC based on our presented scatter property. In the case of the SMFFS based CBCT scan of the Catphan phantom at 120 kVp, after a scatter correction using an analytic algorithm derived from the scatter property, CT image quality was significantly improved, with the averaged root mean square error reduced from 297.9 to 6.5 Hounsfield units.
BPF Algorithms for Multiple Source-Translation Computed Tomography Reconstruction

Abstract:Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) is a widely used state-of-the-art instrument employed to study the morphological structures of objects in various fields. However, its small field-of-view (FOV) cannot meet the pressing demand for imaging relatively large objects at high spatial resolutions. Recently, we devised a novel scanning mode called multiple source translation CT (mSTCT) that effectively enlarges the FOV of the micro-CT and correspondingly developed a virtual projection-based filtered backprojection (V-FBP) algorithm for reconstruction. Although V-FBP skillfully solves the truncation problem in mSTCT, it requires densely sampled projections to arrive at high-resolution reconstruction, which reduces imaging efficiency. In this paper, we developed two backprojection-filtration (BPF)-based algorithms for mSTCT, i.e., S-BPF (derivatives along source) and D-BPF (derivatives along detector). D-BPF can achieve high-resolution reconstruction with fewer projections than V-FBP and S-BPF. Through simulated and real experiments conducted in this paper, we demonstrate that D-BPF can reduce source sampling by 75% compared with V-FBP at the same spatial resolution, which makes mSTCT more feasible in practice. Meanwhile, S-BPF can yield more stable results than D-BPF, which is similar to V-FBP.

Abstract:Objective To analyze and discuss how the scanning parameters influence the quality of dual source CT(DSCT) images by the various settings and the corresponding scans.Methods Testees were scanned with corresponding settings of scanning parameters in SOMATOM Definition DSCT produced by SIEMENS and then the results were analyzed and discussed.Results Parameters in relation with the quality of DSCT images could be influenced by the settings of corresponding scanning parameters.Conclusion The settings of scanning parameters have close relationship with the quality of DSCT images,and sometimes one kind of setting can improve image quality in one field but depress image quality in another field,so all factors should be considered synthetically.[Chinese Medical Equipment Journal,2008,29(2):102-104]
Simulation on system configuration for stationary head CT using linear carbon nanotube x-ray source arrays

Abstract:Purpose: The invention of carbon nanotube (CNT) x-ray source arrays has enabled the development of novel imaging systems, including stationary tomosynthesis and stationary computed tomography (CT) with fast data acquisition, mechanically robust structures, and reduced image blur from source-detector motion. In this work, we report the results of simulation studies of potential system configurations for a stationary head CT (s-HCT) using linear CNT x-ray sources and detector arrays. Approach: We explored s-HCT configurations that utilize one, two, and three linear CNT source arrays. Simulations were implemented using three digital phantoms with both CPU and GPU computing. Sinogram coverage was used for qualitative evaluation of the CT projection collection efficiency for each configuration. A modified low-contrast Shepp-Logan (SL) phantom was implemented for image quality assessment using quantitative metrics. Different iterative reconstruction (IR) methods were compared with both qualitative and quantitative assessments. Results: Sinogram coverage of s-HCT configurations was sensitive to the number of CNT source arrays and geometry. The simulations suggest that a s-HCT configuration with three planes gives near complete sinogram coverage. Such a configuration enables accurate reconstruction of the low-contrast SL phantom and considerably diminished artifacts caused by the system geometry. Conclusions: An optimized s-HCT system configuration with three linear CNT x-ray source arrays is feasible. IR algorithms can diminish artifacts caused by sparse and asymmetrical scans. The proposed s-HCT system configuration is currently under construction.
Analysis of the off-focal source in transmission geometry x-ray systems

Abstract:For x-ray tubes in lab based computed micro-tomography systems, off-focal x rays are those emitted from the source but not produced at the primary focal spot of the electron beam. They can be attributed to both electron and photon scatter within the x-ray tube. Off-focal x rays can represent a significant fraction of the total x-ray flux and lead to artefacts in the radiographs, and reconstructed tomographic volumes, degrading contrast and resolution. Therefore, they are an undesirable feature in industrial and medical x-ray CT scanners. In this work, a general model of an x-ray tube with a transmission target has been developed in TOPAS, a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation extension to GEANT4. MC simulations enable: (1) the analysis of the origin of various types of off-focal x rays; (2) quantification of the prevalence of each type for a specific tube geometry and (3) replication and understanding of experimental results affected by off-focal x rays. Our MC analysis herein shows that the amount of off-focal x rays can represent up to 25% of total x-ray flux. The most prevalent off-focal x rays were found to be the x rays created by the electrons back-scattered from the target into the aperture and generating x rays.

Design of the Multi-Sources Static CT System and Its Dual-Energy Monte Carlo Simulation

Abstract:Current medical CTs obtain projection data at different angles by rotating the gantry. However, the gantry rotation introduces vibrations, which cause the blurring of the reconstruction images. Moreover, the limited speed of the gantry rotation limits the possibility of shorter scan time, which makes the clear cardiac imaging difficult. In order to solve the above problems, the multi-sources static CT system is proposed. Instead of rotating the gantry that mounted with the source and detectors, the static CT system uses three line-array sources to avoid any movement during the scan. A Monte Carlo dual-energy thorax CT simulation based on this static CT system is performed. The dual-energy reconstruction and material decomposition results are represented. The good imaging results verify the feasibility of the proposed static CT system. The potential problems and limits of the static CT as well as the further researches are discussed.
Energy-Guided Diffusion Model for CBCT-to-CT Synthesis

Abstract:Cone Beam CT (CBCT) plays a crucial role in Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART) by accurately providing radiation treatment when organ anatomy changes occur. However, CBCT images suffer from scatter noise and artifacts, making relying solely on CBCT for precise dose calculation and accurate tissue localization challenging. Therefore, there is a need to improve CBCT image quality and Hounsfield Unit (HU) accuracy while preserving anatomical structures. To enhance the role and application value of CBCT in ART, we propose an energy-guided diffusion model (EGDiff) and conduct experiments on a chest tumor dataset to generate synthetic CT (sCT) from CBCT. The experimental results demonstrate impressive performance with an average absolute error of 26.87$\pm$6.14 HU, a structural similarity index measurement of 0.850$\pm$0.03, a peak signal-to-noise ratio of the sCT of 19.83$\pm$1.39 dB, and a normalized cross-correlation of the sCT of 0.874$\pm$0.04. These results indicate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art unsupervised synthesis methods in accuracy and visual quality, producing superior sCT images.

Abstract:For a linear scanning mode—multiple Source Translation Computed Tomography (mSTCT)—when extending a large field-of-view (FOV) with a high geometry magnification, we propose some practical filtered backprojection type reconstruction algorithms. More specially, we formulate a fan-beam Differentiation, Hilbert transform, and Backprojection reconstruction formula for STCT, whose filter is along the detector rather than the source (referred to as D-DHB) to avoid acquiring large amounts of projections, and then generalize it to the cone-beam scene. On the one hand, we apply D-DHB in the full-scan mSTCT (F-mSTCT) mode. On the other hand, we eliminate the unstable position-dependent backprojection weight in the D-DHB formula by introducing an additional weight function. In fact, the backprojection weight of analytical algorithms with filtering along the detector implies the distance between the reconstructed point and the X-ray source focus. Especially where the extended FOV is very close to the source trajectory, removing the position-dependent backprojection weight can avoid some intolerable artifacts around the reconstructed image and improve computation efficiency without losing more accuracy. To meet the requirement of extremely extended FOV imaging, we fully evaluated our two methods from different aspects of the experiments. The results, overall, reveal that our methods are the most practical for mSTCT.

Abstract:Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) is an indispensable tool to provide attenuation-based, high-resolution 3-D images in scientific research. However, its current available configuration limits the size of objects that can be imaged. Previously, we have proposed a multiple source translation computed tomography (mSTCT) imaging geometry to extend the field-of-view (FOV) of micro-CT, and developed a corresponding reconstruction algorithm called virtual projection-based filtered back-projection (V-FBP). V-FBP achieves high-resolution reconstructions when the source is densely sampled but fails if the source is coarsely sampled. In this article, to achieve high-resolution reconstruction at a low source sampling rate, we propose a full-scan multiple-STCT (F-mSTCT) scanning configuration, which allows for a simple and effective weighting function to deal with data redundancy and truncation simultaneously. Based on this concept, we develop a weighted FBP (W-FBP) algorithm. The numerical and physical experiments demonstrate that W-FBP is able to reconstruct high-resolution images at a low source sampling rate, and can reduce 1/2–3/4 projections compared with V-FBP at the same resolution.

Abstract:A classic-optics-based grating-based attenuation-refraction-scattering radiographic & computed tomographic experimental system with a conventional X-ray tube has been built to synchronously reconstruct the distributions of the linear attenuation coefficient, refractive index gradient and generalized scattering parameter of a tested sample in only one computed tomographic scanning process. System optimization and a fusion method of three kinds of images are presented to show desirable structures of the sample. Some preliminary experimental results proved that our system can obtain most comprehensive physical characteristics of the sample.
Energy-angle Correlation Correction Algorithm for Monochromatic Computed Tomography Based on Thomson Scattering X-ray Source

Abstract:The necessity for compact and relatively low cost x-ray sources with monochromaticity, continuous tunability of x-ray energy, high spatial coherence, straightforward polarization control, and high brightness has led to the rapid development of Thomson scattering x-ray sources. To meet the requirement of in-situ monochromatic computed tomography (CT) for large-scale and/or high-attenuation materials based on this type of x-ray source, there is an increasing demand for effective algorithms to correct the energy-angle correlation. In this paper, we take advantage of the parametrization of the x-ray attenuation coefficient to resolve this problem. The linear attenuation coefficient of a material can be decomposed into a linear combination of the energy-dependent photoelectric and Compton cross-sections in the keV energy regime without K-edge discontinuities, and the line integrals of the decomposition coefficients of the above two parts can be determined by performing two spectrally different measurements. After that, the line integral of the linear attenuation coefficient of an imaging object at a certain interested energy can be derived through the above parametrization formula, and monochromatic CT can be reconstructed at this energy using traditional reconstruction methods, e.g., filtered back projection or algebraic reconstruction technique. Not only can monochromatic CT be realized, but also the distributions of the effective atomic number and electron density of the imaging object can be retrieved at the expense of dual-energy CT scan. Simulation results validate our proposal and will be shown in this paper. Our results will further expand the scope of application for Thomson scattering x-ray sources.
[Dosimetry of Translating Scanning Beam Irradiation].

Abstract:BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES:It was difficult to get a good tissue dose distribution using fixed field irradiation technique in large field. But the translating scanning beam irradiation can make it. This study was designed to create a treatment method and to evaluate the dosimetry of translating scanning beam irradiation and the clinical indications.MATERIALS & METHODS:The dosage parameter was measured under the status of the translating scanning beam irradiation in the cobalt radiotherapy machine using a translating scanning beam irradiation device which was developed by Zhejiang Cancer Hospital and Zhejiang University. The ionization chamber method was used in the dosage measurement.RESULTS:(1) The translating scanning beam irradiation can increase the percentage depth dose. (2) The dosage homogeneous distribution is better in the translating scanning beam irradiation than fixed field irradiation. (3) There is no problem in dosage connection between two closed fields in one target volume. (4) The moving penumbra was produced in the translating scanning beam irradiation.CONCLUSIONS:According to the dosage distribution property of translating scanning beam irradiation, it has some obvious advantages in big fields irradiation (for example: total spinal cord, half body, and total body irradiation).
Thomson Scattering X-ray Source: a Novel Tool for Monochromatic Computed to Mography

Abstract:Based on the collision of intense laser and relativistic electrons, a Thomson scattering X-ray source can produce quasi-monochromatic X-ray pulses with high brightness in tens of keV or even higher energy regime, which can eliminate the beam hardening effect encountered in computed tomography (CT) by using polychromatic X-rays generated through Bremsstrahlung and make it possible to relate the reconstructed linear attenuation coefficients to the composition of a material. In this paper, we demonstrate the capacity of quantitative CT measurement based on the Tsinghua Thomson scattering X-ray source (TTX) and the potential of anatomical segmentation using quantitative linear attenuation coefficient analysis. A peanut sample (Arachis hypogaea L.) was selected for this study. According to the reconstructed CT image, all anatomical structures except for the testa (the seed coat) of peanut were identified clearly in terms of the shape and size, and the reconstructed linear attenuation coefficients of cotyledon show high similarities with the theoretical value. After quantitative analysis of the reconstructed linear attenuation coefficients, the hull can be peeled off the core at the threshold of 0.31 cm(-1). Our results pave the way toward fundamental researches and practical applications based on quantitative CT at the TTX.
Experimental Demonstration of X-Ray Fluorescence CT Using a Spatially Distributed Multi-Beam X-Ray Source

Abstract:X-ray fluorescence computed tomography (XFCT) is a high-sensitivity imaging modality for high-atomic elements such as gadolinium (Gd) or gold (Au). In order to improve the contrast of x-ray fluorescence (XRF) signals in the raw projection data, common XFCT systems use single-pixel x-ray spectrometers to record XRF photons stimulated by the pencil-beam x-ray source and achieve line-by-line scan of the whole object by translating the x-ray source or the object. However, this kind of design results in waiting time of the translation device. One improvement would be to replace the traditional x-ray tube with a spatially distributed multi-beam x-ray source and scan the whole object by switching the exposure of each focus. In this study, we present a design of the XFCT system using a spatially distributed multi-beam source, and a XFCT imaging experiment was performed to investigate its feasibility. Each cold cathode of the x-ray source used in this study was made of carbon nanotubes, and each focus was independently controlled by the electronic control system. The incident beam was collimated by a pinhole array to produce a pencil-beam source. The object scanned by the system was a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) cylinder (8 cm in diameter) with Gd (20 mg/ml) and I (100 mg/ml) insertions. Results show that the distribution of iodine (I) and Gd in a PMMA phantom was successfully reconstructed, but the imaging performance was limited by the collimation and exposure mode of the current distributed x-ray source. The practicality of the current distributed x-ray source used for XFCT scan and further optimization of the proposed system are discussed according to the experimental results.

Abstract:In conventional computed tomography (CT) system, generally, the X-ray source moves along a circular or spiral trajectory to achieve volume coverage. However, the gantry rotation increases the manufacturing complexity and dominantly limits the temporal resolution. Recently, a new concept of symmetric-geometry computed tomography (SGCT) was explored, where the sources and detectors are linearly distributed in a stationary configuration. The movements of source and detector are no longer needed in the data acquisition of SGCT, which has the advantage of increasing the scanning speed and simplifying the system construction. In this work, we investigate the there-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction of SGCT, in which the special scanning trajectory is of interest (i.e., tilting straight-line scan). Based on the analysis of imaging geometry and projection data representation, a tilting straight-line analytic reconstruction (TSLA) method is proposed for 3D tomography. The preliminary results of 3D simulated phantoms show that TSLA algorithm for SGCT can reach a reconstruction accuracy which is comparable to that of the helical multidetector CT using PI-original method. On the other hand, with no rotation involved, SGCT can offer fast CT scan and it has the potential in many 3D tomography applications where scanning speed is critical.
