Abstract:The synthetic routes and materials properties of polyethylene/clay nanocomposites are reviewed. Intercalated or exfoliated nanocomposites can be prepared by melt-intercalation and in-situ coordination polymerization. The well dispersion of nanoscale inorganic fillers in polyethylene matrix promotes several properties of the material including improved stiffness,increased flame retardancy and better gas barrier property.

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposites have been prepared using a pseudo-dispersion polymerization of MMA monomer in the presence of fluorinated surfactant-modified clay (10F-clay) in supercritical carbon dioxide. The nanocomposites are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis and show partially exfoliated/interealated structures as well as enhanced thermal stabilities, glass transition temperatures, and mechanical properties. It is also found that 10F-clay served not only as an inorganic filler but also as an effective stabilizer for PMMA polymerization in CO2. The nature of the stabilizing mechanisms is inferred from FTIR studies. This CO2-mediated route allows for a clean synthesis of nanocomposites with high yields without the need for extra surfactant to stabilize the system.
Influence of Clay and Predispersion Method on the Structure and Properties of Polystyrene (ps)‐clay Nanocomposites

Abstract:To prepare the polystyrene (PS)-clay nanocomposites via an in situ emulsion polymerization, a clay predispersion method, i.e. dispersing the organic clay in the emulsifier solution by the assistance of ultrasonic, was proposed in this study. The conventional method, pre-dispersing the organic clay into the monomer, was also presented for the comparison. The morphology analysis based on the X-ray Deflection (XRD) and Transmission Electronic Microscopy (TEM) results suggested that the more uniform clay dispersion in the final nanocomposites could be achieved through the new method. The inorganic clay (Na-MMT) and two organic clays (C-18-MMT and VC18-MMT) synthesized by exchanging inorganic cations with the trimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) and the vinylbenzyl-dimethyloctadecyl ammoniun chloride (VOAC) were chosen to investigate the influence of the clay surface modification on the properties of nanocomposites. The Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) results showed the storage modulus G's of the nanocomposites had different enhancements over that of the pure PS, especially when the temperature approached the glass transition temperature (T-g). The T(g)s of the nanocomposites, however, varied with the microstructure and the interactions between the polymer and the clay layers. The Na-MMT and VC18-MMT increased the T-g, while the T(g)s of PS/C-18-MMT nanocomposites were slightly lower than that of the pure PS. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 49:1937-1944, 2009. Abstract:Epoxy/clay nanocomposites with a high degree of exfoliation were achieved using a so-called "slurry-compounding" process with which the dispersed state of clay in water can be successfully transferred to an epoxy matrix. In this process sodium montmorillonite was first exfoliated and suspended in water. This suspension was further treated with acetone to form a clay-acetone slurry followed by chemical modification using silane. The modified slurry was then mixed extensively with epoxy to form epoxy/nanoclay composites. It has been shown that the morphologies of clay before and after curing are quite similar and the exfoliation process is termed "slurry compounding". Furthermore, the amount of organic modifier used is only 5 wt % of clay, in contrast to conventional organoclays which normally contain at least 25-45 wt % of organic surfactant. The resulting epoxy/nanoclay composites exhibit a high degree of clay exfoliation and a better thermal mechanical property.

Abstract:Epoxy/clay nanocomposites with a better exfoliated morphology have been successfully prepared using a so-called "slurry-compounding" process. The microstructures of the nanocomposites (epoxy/S-clays) were characterized by means of optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that clay was highly exfoliated and uniformly dispersed in the resulting nanocomposite. Characterizations of mechanical and fracture behaviors revealed that Young's modulus increases monotonically with increasing the clay concentration while the fracture toughness shows a maximum at 2.5 wt % of clay. No R-curve behavior was observed in these nanocomposites. The microdeformation and fracture mechanisms were investigated by studying the microstructure of arrested crack tips and the damage zone using TEM and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The initiation and development of microcracks are the dominant microdeformation and fracture mechanisms in the epoxy/S-clay nanocomposites. Most of the microcracks initiate between clay layers. The formation of a large number of microcracks and the increase in the fracture surface area due to crack deflection are the major toughening mechanisms.

Abstract:An effective method was used to make clay exfoliated successfully. This modified clay hybrid (denoted as E-MMT) was directly used as a filler to improve the mechanical properties of the polymer. E-MMT/epoxy nanocomposites were prepared through an in situ polymerization process. It was found that the Vicker's hardness and the impact intensity of nanocomposites increased effectively. Compared with the pristine epoxy, the Vicker's hardness and impact strength of the 1wt.% E-MMT/epoxy nanocomposites were greatly improved by 36.4% and 110%, respectively. The mechanisms of the significant improvements were also discussed.

Abstract:The unmodified clay has been fully exfoliated in epoxy resin with the aid of a novel ultrafine full-vulcanized powdered rubber. Epoxy/rubber/clay nanocomposites with exfoliated morphology have been successfully prepared. The microstructures of the nanocomposites were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the unmodified clay was fully exfoliated and uniformly dispersed in the resulting nanocomposite. Characterizations of mechanical properties revealed that the impact strength of this special epoxy/rubber/clay nanocomposite increased up 107% over the neat epoxy resin. Thermal analyses showed that thermal stability of the nanocomposite was much better than that of epoxy nanocomposite based on organically modified clay.

Abstract:Polymer/clay nanocomposites consisting of epoxy matrix filled with silicate clay particles were investigated. These particles consist of 1 nm thick platelets or layers with an aspect ratio in the range of 100–1000. Recent and ongoing research has shown that dramatic enhancements can be achieved in stiffness and thermal properties in these nanocomposites with small amounts of particle concentration. The resulting nanocomposite properties are intimately related to the microstructure achieved in processing these materials. The ideal situation of full exfoliation, dispersion and orientation is not usually achieved. A more common case is partial exfoliation and intercalation. The latter is a process whereby the polymer penetrates the interlayer spaces of the clay particles, causing an increase in layer spacing (d-spacing). A three-phase model, including the epoxy matrix, the exfoliated clay nanolayers and the nanolayer clusters was developed. The region consisting of matrix with exfoliated clay nanolayers or platelets was analyzed by assuming near uniform dispersion and random orientation. The properties of intercalated clusters of clay platelets were calculated by a rule of mixtures based on a parallel platelet system. The Mori–Tanaka method was applied to calculate the modulus of the nanocomposite as a function of various parameters, including the exfoliation ratio, clay layer and cluster aspect ratios, d-spacing, intragallery modulus, matrix modulus and matrix Poisson's ratio. With appropriate parameters obtained from experiments, model predictions were in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:A novel approach assisted with solvent was developed to disperse clay into epoxy matrix. The dispersion of clay was examined by means of optical microscopy (OM), wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Batches of cured samples containing 1–3wt.% silane-modified clay (SMC) were prepared and their thermal/mechanical properties were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile and fracture tests. Improvements on storage modulus, Young’s modulus and fracture toughness were achieved with incorporation of SMC clay. The fracture surfaces of the nanocomposites were imaged by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the toughening mechanisms.

Abstract:To improve the performance/cost ratio of epoxy/clay nanocomposites, epoxy resin was reinforced with crude clay with the help of a silane modifier. The epoxy/crude clay nanocomposites were produced through a recently developed “slurry compounding” approach. The microstructure of the nanocomposites was characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thermal mechanical properties were studied with dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It has been shown that only 5wt% of silane modifier is required to facilitate the dispersion and exfoliation of crude clay in epoxy matrix. The storage moduli and thermal stability were improved with the addition of crude clay.

Abstract:Epoxy–clay nanocomposites were synthesized using two organoclays cured with different chemicals at different temperatures. Interlayer distance of the clay layers and curing process were investigated by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectra. The clay treated with facilitated curing agent, 2,4,6-tris[(dimethylamino)methyl]phenol, can exfoliate at all curing conditions, but for the other clay treated with low-speed curing agent, p,p′-diaminodiphenylmethane, exfoliation of the clay layers does not occur. It was found that the relative curing speed between the interlayer and extralayer was the most important factor determining clay exfoliation. Exfoliated epoxy–clay nanocomposites can be prepared if the curing speed of the interlayer is higher than that of the extralayer, irrespective of the curing agent and temperature used. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microstructure and Exfoliation Mechanism of Clay Particles of Epoxy/Clay Nanocomposites under External Shearing Force

Abstract:Different processing methods such as magnetical stirring, high-speed emulsifying and homogenizing and ball milling,were used to homogenously disperse the clay agglomerates and facilitate their exfoliation in epoxy/clay nanocomposites. The mechanical properties and effect of external shearing force on the exfoliation of organic clay modified with organic amine, quaternary ammonium salts and the combination of quaternary ammonium salts and meta-xylylenediamine (MXDA) were investigated. It was found that, for the general stirring, only partially exfoliated structure for the small clay particles or the external layers of large clay agglomerates were obtained. While the fine exfoliation for the external and central layers can be easily achieved by exerting vigorous shearing force, and the catalytic role of acid primary alkylammonium is not the key influencing the exfoliation of clay in epoxy matrix. The impact strength And flexural strength of epoxy/clay nanocomposites can be dramatically improved, which was about 50% and 8% higher than those of the pristine epoxy, respectively. The degree of exfoliation of clay particles will be substantially determined by the pulverization of the clay agglomerates. The smaller the size of clay particles, the better the dispersion and exfoliation of clay layers are, and a simultaneous outward shift of the external and central layers occurs.
A novel method for preparation of exfoliated UV-curable polymer/clay nanocomposites

Abstract:The half adduct of isophorone diisocyanate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (IPDI-HEA), as a reactive organic modifier, was used to functionalize Na-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) clay. Unlike the electronic interaction in the conventional cation-exchange method, the driving force for the organic modification came from the chemical reaction between IPDI-HEA and framework hydroxyl groups on the surface of clay. With high degree of organic modification (48%), the d-spacing of clay layer was greatly enlarged to 3.32nm, and the clay became more organophilic. After in situ photopolymerization among the IPDI-HEA grafted MMT clay, monomers and oligomers, the exfoliated polymer/clay nanocomposites were obtained. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to detect the structure and morphology of the clay dispersed in the polymer matrix. Compared with the pure polymer materials, the exfoliated polymer/clay nanocomposites exhibited enhancements in mechanical and thermal properties.
EFFECT OF CURING AGENTS AND CURING CONDITIONS ON INTERCALATION AND EXFOLIATION BEHAVIOR OF EPOXY/CLAY NANOCOMPOSITE

Abstract:Effects of curing agents, curing conditions, and curing degree on intercalation and exfoliation behavior of epoxy/clay nanocomposites were investigated. Epoxy was cured with five curing agents, DETA, DDM, DMP-30 and two modified amines, with different curing speeds at various temperatures (from low to high). Curing degree and distance between layers of clay were measured by FTIR, XRD and TEM respectively. It was found that it was easy to intercalate clay in epoxy resin, while clay exfoliation in epoxy resin was dependent more on the curing conditions than on curing agents. Under certain curing conditions when curing speed of interlayer epoxy resin is faster than that of extralayer and fully reaches curing, exfoliation easily takes place with all these curing agents and epoxy/clay nanocomposites can be prepared. At the same time, the distance between clay layers increased from 17.5Å to about 100Å. When the curing temperature was too low, diffusion speed of the epoxy resin and the curing agents can influence the clay exfoliation. When the curing temperature was too high, epoxy was cured too rapidly, such that the high viscosity and the resultant mechanical forces will stop the exfoliation process. Only under properly temperatures when the curing speed of the interlayer epoxy is higher than that of the extralayer epoxy can exfoliation take place.

Abstract:Poly(propylene) (PP)/clay nanocomposites have been prepared via a novel reactive compounding approach, in which an epoxy based masterbatch consisting of 20 wt.-% clay was introduced to poly(propylene) with the aid of a maleic anhydride grafted PP (MAPP). The masterbatch was prepared using a recently developed "slurry compounding" technique. After melt compounding, most clay particles have been exfoliated and dispersed into small stacks with several clay layers. WAXD data shows that the dispersion of clay is better at low clay content or high MAPP content. Due to the novelty of the preparation process and complication of the system, the tensile properties of nanocomposites exhibit some unique tendencies with varying the content of MAPP or masterbatch. It is believed that the yield strength and Young's modulus can be dramatically improved after minimizing the excess of unreacted epoxy and optimizing the dispersion of clay.

Abstract:A series of gelatinized starch–clay nanocomposites which exhibit intercalated and exfoliated structures have been developed. Various nanoclay dispersions were prepared (either by standard mixing or through the use of ultrasonics) prior to their combination with a high amylose content starch using high-speed mixing and extrusion technology. Intercalated and exfoliated type structures were observed in the sheet extruded nanocomposites using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Due to the hydrophilic nature of the gelatinized starch nanocomposite a novel preparatory technique was developed to produce nano scale sections for TEM. A range of plasticiser levels were used in conjunction with different unmodified nanoclays (sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) and fluorohectorite (Na-FHT)) having different cationic exchange capacities. It was shown that an optimum level of both plasticiser and nanoclay existed to produce a gelatinized starch film with the highest levels of exfoliation, resulting in superior properties. The use of ultrasonics was only advantageous in terms of clay dispersions at medium clay concentrations in the Na-MMT nanocomposites and higher clay concentrations in the Na-FHT, most probably due to the difference in cationic exchange capacity; however when the level of clay, water and starch was optimised an exfoliated structure was produced via standard mixing which exhibited comparable improvements in mechanical properties to ultrasonically treated samples.

Abstract:The preparation of ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM)/organoclay nanocomposites was studied by melt blending method. The maleic anhydride modified EPDM oligomer (EPDM-MA) was used as a compatibilizer. The effect of organoclay on structure of nanocomposites was evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The absence of basal plane peak in XRD results and homogeneously dispersed clay platelets in EPDM matrix, which is shown by TEM photograph suggests that the EPDM clay nanocomposits are exfoliated. The mechanical and thermal properties of nanocomposites were examined to evaluate the influence of the organoclay on the physical properties. The results show remarkable improvement relative to that of EPDM without clay. To prepare EPDM-clay nanocomposites by a straightforward method, a second process was implemented. It was found that the properties of nanocomposites prepared by both methods are nearly the same; however the second method has lower cost and it is industrially more practical.

Abstract:A newly developed kind of layered clay, rectorite (REC), has been used to yield intercalated or exfoliated thermoplastic polyurethane rubber (TPUR) nanocomposites by melt-processing intercalation. Because of the swollen layered structure of REC, similar to that of montmorillonite, organic rectorites (OREC) can also be obtained through ion-exchange reaction with two different quaternary ammonium salts (QAS1, QAS2) and benzidine (QAS3). The microstructure and dispersibility of OREC layers in TPUR matrix were examined by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, which revealed not only that the composites with lower amounts of clay are intercalation or part exfoliation nanocomposites, but also that the mechanical properties of the composites were substantially enhanced. The maximum ultimate tensile strength for TPUR/OREC nanocomposites appeared at 2 wt % OREC loading. With increasing OREC contents, the tear strength of the composites increased significantly. Abstract:The ammonium intercalated montmorillonite (A-MMT), especially acid treated montmorillonite (H-S-A-MMT), which experienced silane grafting treatment, exhibited highly exfoliation state in poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) matrix. It can be explained that the shear stress was transferred effectively from molten polymer to clay layers during melting processing due to the enhanced polymer-clay interaction by the grafted silane, leading to the slippage and peeling of clay sheets. Furthermore, the equilibrium melting point reduction of highly exfoliated nanocomposite calculated by the Hoffman-Weeks formula exhibited great miscibility between clay and polymer, which was proved by the Nishi-Wang equation.

Abstract:Polymer/clay nanocomposites exhibit desirable performance and multifunctional properties. The ideal dispersion and exfoliation of clay layers in polymeric matrixes is a significant drawback that affects its application. In this study, a novel extruder generating a continuous elongation flow was used to fabricate the representative polypropylene (PP)/organic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposites and then compare with the twin-screw extruder (TSE). Phase morphology, dynamic rheological properties, and mechanical properties were characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, rotational rheometer and impact tests. The morphology and rheological behavior of the nanocomposites evidenced that ideal intercalation or/and exfoliation dispersion of OMMT in PP matrixes can be achieved under continuous elongation flow. Thus, the double-side exfoliation of the OMMT platelets combined with the pulling/diffusion process under an elongation flow is leading to an effective strengthening and toughening of PP better than that in the TSE.
