Abstract:Sawdust particles having sizes of 150-250 μm and 500-600 mum were pyrolyzed under nitrogen to produce char at 1000 degreesC in an entrained flow reactor. The residence time was estimated to be 1.6 and 5.2 s for large and small particle size ranges respectively. Scanning electron microscopy on char particles revealed that the larger particles retained the woody structure whereas smaller particles exhibited smoother surface structure due to melting phenomena. However, no significant ash evaporation was observed at the temperatures tested. The chars obtained from different particle sizes were crushed and gasified over a range of temperatures (700 degrees, 750 degrees, 800 degrees and 850 degreesC) in a thermo-gravimetric analyzer with CO2 to assess the underlying intrinsic kinetics. Activation energies for both the chars were found to be around 200 kJ/mol applying the shrinking core model. Despite the fact that the char particles showed significant difference in surface morphology, they showed similar kinetic behavior during gasification. The findings from this study lead to two major conclusions - a) evaporation of ash was minimal in case of entrained flow pyrolysis and b) gasification kinetics were similar for both the chars irrespective of residence time and particle size.
