Abstract:The aim of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is to detect damage and provide safety evaluation. In order to extend the measurement range of common FBG strain sensors, a novel design method of coefficient-adjustable FBG strain sensors has been created and two types of high qualified FBG strain sensors, the slice base and cylinder base, are also developed. Theoretical analysis and experiments have been conducted, and results show that the sensors based on this design method are suitable for practical applications.

Abstract:In this paper, a new fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor with adjustable sensitivity is invented. The sensitivity adjustment, strain sensing, and temperature compensation principles of the sensor and the corresponding formulae are developed. The prototype sensor specimen is developed, and a series of tests are performed to investigate its strain sensitivity and temperature compensation characteristics. The results show that the strain sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted effectively by the correspondent L/LFBG parameter, with an acceptable discrepancy within ±5% of the theoretical value. The linearity, repeatability, and hysteresis were analyzed, and the errors were 0.98%, 1.15%, and 0.09%, respectively, with excellent performance. When the temperature difference was 20°C, through temperature compensation calibration, the error between the monitored strain and the actual strain was within 5% after temperature compensation correction, showing that this new type of FBG strain sensor can meet the strain monitoring needs of various engineering structures and provide reliable data acquisition.

Abstract:As the strain sensing element of a structural health monitoring, the study and the application of the fibre-optic bragg grating (FBG) have been widely accepted. The accuracy of the FBG sensor is highly dependent on the physical and the mechanical properties of the strain interface transferring characteristics among the layers of bare optical fibre, protective coating, adhesive layer and host material. In this paper, firstly, the general expression of the multilayer interface strain transferring mechanism is derived. Secondly, based on the defined average strain, the error-modified equation of the FBG sensor is obtained. Finally, in the light of the embedded tube-packaged FBG and the fibre reinforced polymer-optical fibre bragg grating (FRP-OFBG) strain sensors, developed in the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), the corresponding strain transferring laws have been studied, and the corresponding error modification coefficients have also been given, which are validated by experiments. The research results provide theories for the development and application of the embedded FBG sensors.

Abstract:Packaged FBG (optical fiber Bragg Grating) strain sensor with good properties of high durability, low cost and reliable installation is in the great need of practical long-term Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system for civil insfrastructures, especially for those under harsh environment, such as corrosion, high fatigue, etc. Aiming at the practical applications of FBG in such areas, 2 kinds of low cost strain sensors, prototype-packaged FBG sensor and embracing slice packaged FBG sensor, for steel rebar and small cable are developed. And their sensing properties of the sensors under dead load have been tested. The experimental results show good feasibility and advantages of such kinds of sensors for steel rebar or cable strain measurement for practical civil infrastructures under harsh conditions.

Abstract:The application of adhered FBG strain sensor is affected by interface strain transfer and error modification. In his paper, firstly, based on the characterstics of forces and damage, the fundamental hupotheses are given, and the general expression of interface transferring mechanism is derived. After that, united form of the characteristic value-λ for the general equation is geven for the multi-layer coatings. Finally, according to the error-modified equation of adhered FBG sensor, the relationships the error rate η against the shear modulus and the thckness of the glue are given. With regard to the glue applied in engineering (thickness is from 4mm to 60mm, shear modulus is from 30MPa to 200MPa), the error rate η is about 5~10%, and the correction coefficient k is about 1.05~1.11. Hence, the error modification must be considered when adhered FBG strain sensors are used in civil engineering.

Abstract:For the purpose of improving the sensitivity of the fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based strain sensor. A novel FBG-based strain sensor with high sensibility was designed by means of a flexible hinge bridge displacement magnification structure. This sensor can be used to accurately measure the strain of a mechanical structure surface. In this paper, the strain sensitization amplification factor of the sensor was calculated by using the flexible matrix method and the strain energy theory. The magnification had been verified by using simulation analysis and experimental results, and the error between theoretical calculation and simulation analysis was less than 7%. The result shows that the strain sensitivity of the sensor is 10.84 pm/με, which is about 10 times to that of the bare FBG sensor. This sensor is sensitive to micro-strain, so it can be well applied to health monitoring of a mechanical system.

Abstract:We get the binary Taylor expansions of the effective refractive index and period of fiber Bragg grating (FBG), verify theoretically that the temperature-strain and strain-temperature cross sensitivities are the same, and make a conclusion that the thermo-optical coefficient and the elasto-optical coefficient are both proportional to the square of the effective refractive index. The calculation equations of temperature and strain are listed, and the method of calculation is expatiated. The wavelengths of FBG under different temperatures and strains are measured, and the cross sensitivity coefficients of temperature-strain and strain-temperature are -1.4743x10(-6) nm/(degrees C.mu epsilon) and -1.3948x10(-6) nm/(mu epsilon.degrees C). We place the FBG hydrostatic leveling instrument on the open-air balcony for one day, monitor the wavelength changes of FBG, and then calculate and get a more accurate solution to the changes of liquid depth in the hydrostatic level instrument. The experimental results show that using the calculation equations of temperature and strain can improve the measurement accuracy of FBG.

Abstract:For the sake of local monitoring of long-term health monitoring for large civil infrastructure, firstly, the basic sensing principle of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and the temperature compensation techniques are studied. Secondly, the packaged FBG sensors and smart composite fiber reinforced polymer-optical fiber Bragg grating (FRP-OFBG) bars have been studied and developed. Thirdly, multi-layer strain transfer mechanics and error modification have also been studied. Finally, The FBG monitoring system has been set up and the practical bridges under construction and in service have been monitored by FBG. The research results show that FBG is proper for local monitoring of structural health monitoring.

Abstract:FBG strain sensors are more and more accepted in the area of structural health monitoring, especially in civil infrastructures. However, due to the fact that FBG senses both strain and temperature simultaneously. And moreover the wavelength shift induced by 1 degrees C is almost equivalent to that induced by 10 mu epsilon. So temperature compensation for FBG strain sensors of long-term structural monitoring is indispensable. In this paper, based on the FBG's strain and temperature sensing principles, the techniques of dual FBGs temperature compensation and the environmental temperature compensation are brought forward. The experiment of cement paste curing monitored by dual FBGs was carried out. And the advantage of the technique of dual FBGs temperature compensation are proved, which is proper for long-term structural monitoring system for civil infrastructures.

Abstract:ABSTRACTAn optoelectronic oscillator (OEO)‐based strain sensor with extended measurement range is proposed and demonstrated. The OEO is embedded with an electrical phase shifter (EPS) to cancel out the strain‐induced phase shift real‐timely via a phase‐locked loop scheme. Theoretically, the control voltage of the EPS is linear to the strain applied on the sensing fiber, leading to a simple and straightforward frequency demodulation. Thanks to the real‐time close‐loop interrogation, the mode‐hopping‐free frequency shift range can exceed one free spectrum range, thus, the measurement range of the sensor is extended. The obtained strain measurement range is up to 2762 με. The achieved strain resolution is 0.86 με. Abstract:A new fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor that can measure temperature, vibration, and strain is proposed in this article. The structure of this sensor is designed and optimized via theoretical analysis and the finite-element method (FEM). With an innovatively designed L-shaped cantilever (LSC), this designed sensor can better balance the vibration measurement sensitivity and the resonant frequency. The strain measurement structure is designed as a hollow square so that the reaction force of the sensor for the measured object is only 2.76×10 -3 N/ με, which ensures that the strain distribution of the measured object is not affected. The designed sensor can significantly amplify the measured strain with a measurement sensitivity (5.44 pm/ με) that is four times greater than that of the bare FBGs. This article uses single-mode FBGs inscribed by a femtosecond laser (FS-FBG) to make the sensors, and the sensing performance is analyzed. The results show that this FS-FBG-based sensor can withstand temperatures up to 1100 °C.
New kind of FBG-based crack (large strain) sensor

Abstract:Optical Fiber Bragg Grating (OFBG) is now widely accepted as smart sensor due to its advantages of electric-magnetic resistance, small size, distributed sensing, durability, and so on. However, to our great regret, the bare FBG can only stand 3000-5000 mu epsilon, which can not satisfy the need of practical strain monitoring of infrastructures, especially for the damage detection, such as crack and large strain. In this paper, new technique of sensitivity-decreasing of FBG strain sensor has been brought forward and a new kind of FBG-based crack sensor is also developed. The novel FBG-based crack sensor (also named large FBG strain sensor) can detect 100,000 mu epsilon at maximum, just like 20mm crack at the calibration length of 20 centimeter, and the accuracy can reach 0.01 mm. The new kind of crack sensor is proper for high accuracy crack detection for long-term structural health monitoring of infrastructures.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensors have been increasingly used to measure the strain of structures. For the material characteristic of optical fiber, FBG is usually clad with protective coatings in practical engineering. Existence of the protective layer absorbs a portion of strain of the monitored structure and contributes to the strain transfer error. To correct this error and improve the testing accuracy, theoretical analysis on strain transfer mechanism of a three-layered mechanical model with quadrate-packaged FBG sensor embedded in rectangular structure is conducted in this paper. Numerical simulation is adopted to verify the correctness and laboratory tests are planned to validate the effectiveness of the proposed strain transfer formula. Sensitivity of geometrical and material parameters that influence the strain transfer efficiency and optimum analysis is studied. Results indicate that the proposed strain transfer mechanism is feasible to modify the strain transfer error and improve the testing accuracy of the sensor embedded in rectangular structure, and sensitive parameters and optimum design are provided as well for the better use of FBG sensors in engineering.

Abstract:In recent years, FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) has been accepted as a new kind of sensing element for structural health monitoring (SHM) in civil infrastructures. Cost of FBG fabrication, high-quality FBG demodulation system, practical encapsulation (package) techniques and indirect FBG-based sensors, and practical applications are the cores for FBG to be widely popularized in infrastructures. In this paper, firstly, the FBG fabrication and demodulation system are briefly introduced and the practical needs from infrastructure are pointed out; Secondly, the practical encapsulation (package) techniques and indirect FBG based sensors from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), have been conducted; Thirdly, some practical applications, taken as examples, are carried out; Finally, the future studies and problems are also set forth. Researches and practical applications show that FBG sensors have become one of the key sensors in SHM instead of some conventional electrical sensors.

Abstract:Static strain can be detected by measuring a cross-correlation of reflection spectra from two fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). However, the static-strain measurement resolution is limited by the dominant Gaussian noise source when using this traditional method. This paper presents a novel static-strain demodulation algorithm for FBG-based Fabry-Perot interferometers (FBG-FPs). The Hilbert transform is proposed for changing the Gaussian distribution of the two FBG-FPs' reflection spectra, and a cross third-order cumulant is used to use the results of the Hilbert transform and get a group of noise-vanished signals which can be used to accurately calculate the wavelength difference of the two FBG-FPs. The benefit by these processes is that Gaussian noise in the spectra can be suppressed completely in theory and a higher resolution can be reached. In order to verify the precision and flexibility of this algorithm, a detailed theory model and a simulation analysis are given, and an experiment is implemented. As a result, a static-strain resolution of 0.9 nε under laboratory environment condition is achieved, showing a higher resolution than the traditional cross-correlation method.

An Ultra-High-Resolution Fbg Static-Strain Sensor for Geophysics Applications

Abstract:We report an ultra-high-resolution static-strain measurement with a pair of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), one for strain sensing and the other for compensating the error due to temperature disturbance and source drift. The difference between the two FBGs' Bragg wavelengths is evaluated by utilizing a cross-correlation algorithm. The mechanism of noise suppression by the cross-correlation algorithm is quantitatively analyzed and the factor that determines the ability of noise suppression of this algorithm is revealed. The temperature dependence is further subtracted by using a vector operation. When no strain is applied, an ultra-high wavelength resolution corresponding to 2.6 n epsilon was obtained, which gives the ultimate performance of the measurement system. With a variable strain applied with a piezo-stage, a resolution of 17.6 n epsilon was demonstrated. This is the first demonstration, to the best of our knowledge, that a real-static strain down to 10 n epsilon is measured, providing a powerful technique for the measurement in geophysics application.
A Temperature and Strain Sensor Based on a Cascade of Double Fiber Bragg Grating

Abstract:Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have become a promising sensor element for measuring temperature, strain and other parameters. However, there exists a cross-sensitivity between temperature and strain. An all-fiber sensing system composed of gold-plated FBGs and acrylic FBGs has been proposed and fabricated, which can achieve simultaneous measurement of axial strain and temperature. Using a spectrometer to monitor the shift in the transmission spectrum in real time, the strain and ambient temperature applied to the sensor can be measured conveniently. The experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity of a gold-plated FBG is 3.2 times of that of an acrylate-plated FBG, which can distinguish the temperature changes efficiently. In other words, its sensitivity is increased 2.2 times compared with ordinary fiber grating. The strain sensitivity of gold-plated FBG and acrylate-plated FBG is the same, which is 1.19 pm/mu epsilon. The sensor has the advantages of having a simple structure and high sensitivity and can be used to monitor the running state of rail traffic.

Abstract:One of the most significant limitations of FBG sensors is their dual sensitivity to temperature and strain. Many methods have reported to avoid this problem by using a tapered fiber grating for the strain measurement free from temperature influence. But all of them are based on the measurement of the reflected power from the tapered fiber grating (TFG). In fact, they have abandoned the major advantage that the measured information is encoded in light wavelength instead of light intensity of FBG sensors, and the revolution of these sensors is begin to depend on the light power fluctuation, connection loss and many other elements. All of these would enlarge the cost of the sensing system. On the basis of the theory calculation and experiment, we demonstrate the feasibility to make a temperature-independent strain sensor by measuring the bandwidth of the reflected light from the tapered fiber grating. In this paper, we also present a novel demodulating method based on a scanning FBG. In the experiment, a PZT is used to make the reflected wavelength of FBG scanned from short wavelength to long wavelength to measure the bandwidth of the reflected light from TFG. From the experimental results, it could be seen that the influences of the light power fluctuation and connection loss are eliminated thoroughly. This simple and low-cost sensor approach has a considerable potential, particularly application for strain sensing in the smart structures.

Abstract:To meet the needs of the displacement monitoring in Structural Health Monitoring system,based on the principle of FBG and according to the needs of the practical displacement monitoring in the infrastructure,a new kind of FBG displacement gauge with simple structure,high accuracy,temperature self-compensation was proposed which is able to meet the needs of the displacement monitoring of the structure for a long time.Some calibration has also been done on the sensitivity coefficient.The results show that the movement of the FBG's wavelength is well linear to the displacement and the sensor also has good repeatability.Compared with the precision of the detector,the precision of the sensor is 0.08mm,while the correlation coefficient is up to 0.999.
