Abstract:A micro fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor with two holders in both sides of FBG which are packaged by tube is developed for strain measurement.The sensor structure consists of three parts:FBG,holder tube and tail fibre.The FBG sensors packaged by holder tube has the advantages of small size,variable sensitivity coefficient and high precision,which are applied in laboratory model test which has small strain and dimension restriction.Test results show that micro FBG strain sensor with enhanced sensitivity has the advantages of high sensitivity,low-noise,stable and reliable,it shows a good linear relationship in the range of standard distance,which is over 0.999.Fabrication process is simple,and it has very high practical value.

Abstract:In this paper,the copper slice packaging technique fo r FBG sensor was developed in consideration of bare optical fiber being fragilit y,and then the strain and temperature characteristics of the packaged FBG sensor were experimentally and theoretically studied.Compared with the experimental re sults of the bare FBG,the strain sensing property of the FBG sensor packaged by the copper slice is nearly the same as that of the bare FBG,however the temperat ure sensing ability of the packaged FBG sensor is improved and the temperature s ensitivity coefficient is 2.78 times as much as that of the bare FBG.The strain and temperature resolution of the packaged FBG sensor are 1 με and 0.03℃.The packaged FBG sensors can be used easily in engineering.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensors have been increasingly used to measure the strain of structures. For the material characteristic of optical fiber, FBG is usually clad with protective coatings in practical engineering. Existence of the protective layer absorbs a portion of strain of the monitored structure and contributes to the strain transfer error. To correct this error and improve the testing accuracy, theoretical analysis on strain transfer mechanism of a three-layered mechanical model with quadrate-packaged FBG sensor embedded in rectangular structure is conducted in this paper. Numerical simulation is adopted to verify the correctness and laboratory tests are planned to validate the effectiveness of the proposed strain transfer formula. Sensitivity of geometrical and material parameters that influence the strain transfer efficiency and optimum analysis is studied. Results indicate that the proposed strain transfer mechanism is feasible to modify the strain transfer error and improve the testing accuracy of the sensor embedded in rectangular structure, and sensitive parameters and optimum design are provided as well for the better use of FBG sensors in engineering.

Abstract:A long-gauge fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor with enhanced strain sensitivity is proposed, which is encapsulated with two T-shaped metal blocks. Its fabrication method is described briefly, and the strain sensitivity can be flexibly adjusted through changing its packaging method. A series of experiments are carried out to study the packaging and its sensing properties. The experimental results show that the strain and temperature sensitivity coefficient of the sensor are three times larger than the common FBG sensors. The linearity coefficients of the FBG sensor are larger than 0.999, and the relative error of the repeatability of all sensor samples is less than 1%. Through the stability test on the actual bridge, it is revealed that the long-term stability of the sensor is excellent, and the maximum error is less than 1.5%. In addition, the proposed FBG strain sensors are used to conduct a shear strengthening experiment on a reinforced concrete (RC) beam to verify its working performance. The experimental results show that the strain change and crack propagation of the RC beam are well monitored by the sensors during the loading process.

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of packaging material and structure of fiber Bragg grating sensor performance are investigated. The effects of thermal expansion coefficient of different embedding materials on the temperature sensitivities of the FBG sensors are studied both theoretically and experimentally with good agreement, which provides a means for selection of FBG packaging material to achieve desired temperature sensitivity. We also demonstrate a 4-point bending structured FBG lateral force sensor that measures up to 242N force with well-preserved reflection spectrum, whereas for 3-point bending structure, multiple-peaks start to occur when applied force reaches 72N.

Abstract:In our recent study, a structural health monitoring strategy based on distributed fiber optic sensing techniques has been proposed to utilize the strain responses throughout the full or some partial areas of structures to detect the arbitrary and unforeseen damage. However, to perform this strategy more effectively, there is an increasing demand for improving the ability of such sensors to measure small structural responses, especially for the cases such as damage identification based on ambient vibration tests, fatigue crack monitoring of steel structures and crack detection of reinforced concrete structures. This work puts forward a novel packaging design for long-gage fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors to enhance the measurement sensitivity of strain responses. The basic idea is to utilize two materials of different stiffness to package the in-tube optical fiber and impose the deformation within the gage length largely on the short-gage sensing part of FBG. Proof-tests indicate that the measurement sensitivity of the innovative FBG sensor can be artificially enhanced by adjusting the two recoating materials and their respective lengths. A series of tests are carried out to verify the ability of the improved sensors to detect small crack and measure slight vibration.

Abstract:To simplify strain transfer links and improve long-term strain transfer stability, a novel strain measuring method based on metallized bonding is proposed. The strain sensing structure is proposed, and the basic principle and technical process of metallized bonding technology are analyzed. According to the elastic mechanics control equation, the stress transfer model for the optimal selection of metallized bonding materials is established. Based on the stress transfer model, the influence of different bonding materials on strain sensing performance is analyzed in simulation, the simulation results prove the theoretical superiority of direct metallized bonding. To test the sensing property of direct metallized bonding, metal Pb was selected as the bonding material, a FBG was bonded directly onto a steel string with diameter of φ 7 mm, and tensile tests were carried on a material test system (MTS). The experimental results show that good linearity and repeatability exist between fiber Bragg grating (FBG) output central wavelength and tensile force, the linearity is better than 0.999; and the average strain transfer coefficient reaches 0.98, it is in good accordance with the theoretical value of 0.9828, which proves the correctness and feasibility of the theoretical model and bonding technical approach. The test results indicate that the FBG strain sensing method based on direct metallized bonding has superior strain measurement capability.

Abstract:Packaged FBG (optical fiber Bragg Grating) strain sensor with good properties of high durability, low cost and reliable installation is in the great need of practical long-term Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system for civil insfrastructures, especially for those under harsh environment, such as corrosion, high fatigue, etc. Aiming at the practical applications of FBG in such areas, 2 kinds of low cost strain sensors, prototype-packaged FBG sensor and embracing slice packaged FBG sensor, for steel rebar and small cable are developed. And their sensing properties of the sensors under dead load have been tested. The experimental results show good feasibility and advantages of such kinds of sensors for steel rebar or cable strain measurement for practical civil infrastructures under harsh conditions.

Abstract:This research focuses on a desensitization method to develop a wide-range FBG sensor for extra-large strain monitoring, which is an essential requirement in large scale infrastructures or for some special occasions. Under appropriate hypotheses, the strain transfer distribution of wide-range FBG sensor based on the shear-lag theory is conducted to improve the accuracy of extra-large strain measurements. It is also discussed how the elastic modulus of adhesive layer affects the strain transfer rate. Two prototypes in different monitoring ranges are designed and fabricated by two layers of steel pipe encapsulation. The presented theoretical model is verified by experimental results. Moreover, it is demonstrated that experimentation in regards to the calibration of the wide-range FBG sensor, improved the amplification coefficient up to 2.08 times and 3.88 times, respectively. The static errors are both calculated and analyzed in this experiment. The wide-range FBG strain sensor shows favourable linearity and stability, which is an excellent property of sensors for extra-large strain monitoring.
Optical FBG's Sensing Properties and Practical Application in Civil Infrastructures

Abstract:Sensing properties of the bare FBG have theoretically and experimentally been studied in this study, and then a temperature compensation method for FBG strain sensors was proposed. Due to the fragility of bare FBG, a technique of encapsulating bare FBG in a capillary steel tube was developed and the strain and temperature sensing properties of the encapsulated FBG were furthermore studied. With the consideration of the practical application in civil infrastructures, the technique of FBG to adhere or embed on steel and in reinforced concrete structures was studied. With successfully affixing and embedding bare FBGs and encapsulated FBGs sensors on a steel truss and in a reinforced concrete beam, respectively, the experiment of using the above FBG sensors to monitor the structural strain and deformation process. In order to verify the quasi-distribution sensing ability of FBG, the test that 3 bare FBGs were connected one by one and adhered on a steel truss was done and the independently sensing strain ability was found. Finally, FBGs strain sensors were successfully embedded in a reinforced concrete bridge to monitor the strain history and distribution under construction and in service. The measuring signals indicated that the embedded FBGs could precisely and long-term monitor the strain history, therefore, they can be employed to evaluate the fatigue life for the bridge.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are ideally suited for monitoring strain in civil structures, aircrafts, ocean engineering due to their low cost, reliable and high accuracy. A new encapsulation technology for FBG using polyurethane is proposed to help the sensor withstand large displacement in hash environment. This paper aims to provide experimental packaging procedures, calibration and field tests of developed FBG sensors for strain measurement. The principles, basic chemical reaction processes and prepare procedures of polyurethane are demonstrated. Suitable protective encapsulation to the bare fiber by polyurethane ensures that there is no relative slip at the interface. The encapsulated FBG sensor has good linearity from the result of calibration test conducted on a universal testing machine. Further the sensor is embedded into the freezing soil to evaluate the performance in severe environment. (C) 2018 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Packaging technique of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is studied. Two packaging schemes of FBG, FBG strain sensor packaged by I shaped steel pole and FBG temperature sensor packaged by steel tube, are proposed and demonstrated. They are embedded into a steel reinforced concrete beam in order to monitor the tension and compress strain and temperature. The result shows that concrete strain can be measured using packaged FBG strain sensors in the elastic phase of beam. Embedding technique of sensors is studied also, two embedding methods are proposed.

Abstract:In this paper, a new fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor with adjustable sensitivity is invented. The sensitivity adjustment, strain sensing, and temperature compensation principles of the sensor and the corresponding formulae are developed. The prototype sensor specimen is developed, and a series of tests are performed to investigate its strain sensitivity and temperature compensation characteristics. The results show that the strain sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted effectively by the correspondent L/LFBG parameter, with an acceptable discrepancy within ±5% of the theoretical value. The linearity, repeatability, and hysteresis were analyzed, and the errors were 0.98%, 1.15%, and 0.09%, respectively, with excellent performance. When the temperature difference was 20°C, through temperature compensation calibration, the error between the monitored strain and the actual strain was within 5% after temperature compensation correction, showing that this new type of FBG strain sensor can meet the strain monitoring needs of various engineering structures and provide reliable data acquisition.

Abstract:A novel fiber Bragg grating(FBG)high-temperature strain sensor with an effective temperature compensation structure is proposed and demonstrated.A new approach for encapsulation of FBG with high-temperature strain sensing structure is presented,which can realize the high-precision measurement of the strain which is achieved around 250 ℃.The experimental results show that the proposed non-gel encapsulation method of FBG with high-temperature strain sensing structure has excellet stability and repeatability.It is applicable to measure the contact-type and high-precision strain of large machinery in about 250 ℃ environment and furthermore,this structure is simple and thus it is able to achieve mass production.Therefore,it has excellect practical value for the engineering application in high-temperature environment.The strain sensitivity obtained in our experiment is about 369.4 pm/N,while the linearity is R2=0.999 2.

Abstract:A novel long gauge strain Fiber Bragg Grating sensor (LG FBG sensor) has been proposed. Pretension technique and packaging method were proposed and demonstrated. Two kinds of long gauge strain FBG sensors were made, which can measure the average strain in 10cm gauge and 20cm gauge, respectively. Calibration test is conducted to obtain the strain coefficient and temperature coefficient of the sensor. Comparison tests have been carried out, and the results verify the feasibility of the proposed sensor.

Abstract:Encapsulation technique is most important for bare fiber Bragg gratings to be applied in practical infrastructures, especially the ones under harsh environment. In this paper, firstly, the basic theory of encapsulation techniques of FBG strain sensors is studied, which is the base of the design of FBG strain sensors. Then, the optimization design of the embedment encapsulated FBG strain sensor as an example, is introduced. In order to incorporate the mechanical properties of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and the sensing properties of FBG, a new kind of composites encapsulated FBG strain sensor, named as FRP-OFBG bar, has been developed and its size is advised as a strain sensor. Finally, the mechanical theory has been tested by the practical RC beams with installed encapsulated FBG strain sensors and FRP-OFBG.
Static Pure Strain Sensing Using Dual-Comb Spectroscopy with FBG Sensors.

Abstract:We propose a method to precisely characterize the optical response of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor for static strain sensing by using dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS). By digitally post-correcting the mutual noise between the two combs, a robust and pure strain sensing system is achieved by compensating for the temperature-induced frequency shift of the FBG sensor. The comb-resolved radio-frequency (RF) spectra generated by DCS are obtained. Meanwhile, the stability of the central Bragg frequency of the FBG-reflected spectrum in the RF domain is 0.315 kHz, which is better than the difference of repetition rate (1 kHz). A reference FBG is used for detecting and compensating for the temperature-induced central frequency drift. Finally, a spectral sensitivity of 0.85 pm/µɛ with 0.8 µɛ static strain resolution is achieved.
An Ultra-High-Resolution Fbg Static-Strain Sensor for Geophysics Applications

Abstract:We report an ultra-high-resolution static-strain measurement with a pair of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), one for strain sensing and the other for compensating the error due to temperature disturbance and source drift. The difference between the two FBGs' Bragg wavelengths is evaluated by utilizing a cross-correlation algorithm. The mechanism of noise suppression by the cross-correlation algorithm is quantitatively analyzed and the factor that determines the ability of noise suppression of this algorithm is revealed. The temperature dependence is further subtracted by using a vector operation. When no strain is applied, an ultra-high wavelength resolution corresponding to 2.6 n epsilon was obtained, which gives the ultimate performance of the measurement system. With a variable strain applied with a piezo-stage, a resolution of 17.6 n epsilon was demonstrated. This is the first demonstration, to the best of our knowledge, that a real-static strain down to 10 n epsilon is measured, providing a powerful technique for the measurement in geophysics application.

Abstract:A new fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor that can measure temperature, vibration, and strain is proposed in this article. The structure of this sensor is designed and optimized via theoretical analysis and the finite-element method (FEM). With an innovatively designed L-shaped cantilever (LSC), this designed sensor can better balance the vibration measurement sensitivity and the resonant frequency. The strain measurement structure is designed as a hollow square so that the reaction force of the sensor for the measured object is only 2.76×10 -3 N/ με, which ensures that the strain distribution of the measured object is not affected. The designed sensor can significantly amplify the measured strain with a measurement sensitivity (5.44 pm/ με) that is four times greater than that of the bare FBGs. This article uses single-mode FBGs inscribed by a femtosecond laser (FS-FBG) to make the sensors, and the sensing performance is analyzed. The results show that this FS-FBG-based sensor can withstand temperatures up to 1100 °C.
