Abstract:The perovskite La0.6Sr0.4Co0.8Cu0.2O3−δ (LSCCu) oxide is synthesized by a modified Pechini method and examined as a novel cathode material for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs) based upon functional graded anode. The perovskite LSCCu exhibits excellent ionic and electronic conductivities in the intermediate-to-low-temperature range (400–800°C). Thin Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SDC) electrolyte and NiO–SDC anode functional layer are prepared over macroporous anode substrates composed of NiO–SDC by a one-step dry-pressing/co-firing process. A single cell with 20μm thick SDC electrolyte on a porous anode support and LSCCu–SDC cathode shows peak power densities of only 583.2mWcm−2 at 650°C and 309.4mWcm−2 for 550°C. While a cell with 20μm thick SDC electrolyte and an anode functional layer on the macroporous anode substrate shows peak power densities of 867.3 and 490.3mWcm−2 at 650 and 550°C, respectively. The dramatic improvement of cell performance is attributed to the much improved anode microstructure that is confirmed by both SEM observation and impedance spectroscopy. The results indicate that LSCCu is a very promising cathode material for LT-SOFCs and the one-step dry-pressing/co-firing process is a suitable technique to fabricate high performance SOFCs.

Abstract:LSCF/CGO composite cathodes decorated with small amount (less than 1wt%) of nano CuO particles has been synthesized by infiltration technique. The area specific resistance (ASR) of the LSCF/CGO at 500°C has been significantly reduced by the CuO infiltration from 15.5Ωcm2 and 0.62Ωcm2 to 3.9Ωcm2 and 0.32Ωcm2 at 500°C and 650°C respectively. The redox reaction of Cu2+/Cu1+ at the interface of CuO and LSCF/CGO has been assigned as the main reason for the improvement. Lattice parameter change of LSCF at 500°C has been detected by High Temperature XRD, indicating partial diffusion of Cu2+ into the lattice of LSCF, and formation of a new Cu containing compound. The performance stability of the infiltrated samples has been investigated by aging at 500°C and 650°C for 150hours in stagnant air. A slight degradation of the catalytic property was observed during the aging process. The degradation may be attributed to three factors: (i) the coarsening of CuO nanoparticles, (ii) segregation of the SrO due the lattice change and (iii) instability of the new Cu2+ contained compounds.
Enhanced Electrochemical Performance and Operating Stability of La0.8Sr0.2Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ Fiber Cathode Via Gd0.2Ce0.8O1.9-δ Coating for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract:The low catalytic activity and poor long-term stability of cathode at intermediate temperatures are one of the bottlenecks hindering the application of solid oxide fuel cells. In this work, the highly active and robust La0.8Sr0.2Co0.2Fe0.8O3-delta (LSCF) nanofibers based composite cathodes with core-shell structure is prepared applying electrospinning combined with sol-gel method. Owing to the favorable oxygen ion transport capability of Gd0.2Ce0.8O1.9-delta (GDC) nanoparticle coating layer, the GDC coated LSCF nanorods composite cathode with GDC:LSCF mass ratio of 0.51:1 obtains the optimal electrochemical performance, reaching a polarization impedance of 0.03 omega cm2 at 800 degrees C. Meanwhile, the composite cathode exhibits no obvious degradation for constant operating 200 h. Remarkably, XPS and Raman characterizations imply that the applying of GDC coating inhibits the formation of SrO and SrCrO4 during the long-term operating in Cr containing atmosphere, thereby endowing the higher long-term operation stability and Cr poisoning tolerance to LSCF based cathode.

Abstract:Recently, Fe-based perovskite oxides, such as Ln(1-x)Sr(x)FeO(3-delta) (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) have been proposed as potential alternative electrode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), due to their good phase stability, electrocatalytic activity, and low cost. This work presents the catalytic effect of BaCO3 nanoparticles modified on a cobalt-free La0.8Sr0.2FeO3-delta-Gd0.2Ce0.8O2-delta (LSF-GDC) composite cathode at an intermediate-temperature (IT)-SOFC. An electrochemical conductivity relaxation investigation (ECR) shows that the K-chem value of the modified LSF-GDC improves up to a factor of 17.47, demonstrating that the oxygen reduction process is effectively enhanced after surface impregnation by BaCO3. The area-specific resistance (ASR) of the LSF-GDC cathode, modified with 9.12 wt.% BaCO3, is 0.1 omega.cm(2) at 750 degrees C, which is about 2.2 times lower than that of the bare cathode (0.22 omega.cm(2)). As a result, the anode-supported single cells, with the modified LSF-GDC cathode, deliver a high peak power density of 993 mW/cm(2) at 750 degrees C, about 39.5% higher than that of the bare cell (712 mW/cm(2)). The single cells based on the modified cathode also displayed good performance stability for about 100 h at 700 degrees C. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of BaCO3 nanoparticles for improving the performance of IT-SOFC cathode materials.

Abstract:Core-shell-structured La0.8Sr0.2Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ@Gd0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (LSCF@GDC) composite materials are synthesized and sintered as the SOFC cathodes by screen-printing method. The durability of core-shell-structured LSCF@GDC composite cathodes are evaluated through constant current polarizations (CCP) process at 750 °C and the results indicate that the core-shell-structured LSCF@GDC composite cathode (nanorod, 0.6) possesses an excellent long-term stability. In addition, molecular dynamics (MD) model is developed and applied to simulate the interaction between LSCF and GDC particles. According to the simulation results, compressive stress is generated at the cathode-electrolyte interface by the coated GDC layer. Combining with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) refinement results, it's revealed that the lattice strains are introduced in LSCF lattices because of the compressive stress. Furthermore, XPS results show that the core-shell-structured LSCF@GDC composite cathode (nanorod, 0.6) possess a better inhibition ability for Sr surface segregation. This study provides a possible way to suppress Sr surface segregation.

Abstract:Sintering aids were commonly used to densify the gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC). In this study, 2 mol% Co(N-O-3)2 center dot 6H(2)O was used as the sintering aid, GDC interlayers with 2 mol% Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2) O (Co-GDC) were sintered at 1150 degrees C, 1200 degrees C, 1250 degrees C and 1350 degrees C, respectively. The Co-GDC interlayer sintered at 1150 degrees C was porous, but only closed pores existed when the Co-GDC interlayers were sintering above 1250 degrees C. The initial ohmic resistances of the cells with Co-GDC interlayers sintered at 1150 degrees C, 1250 degrees C and 1350 degrees C were 0.259, 0.266 and 0.299 Omega cm(2) . After the cells running for 100 h, the ohmic resistances were 0.289, 0.262 and 0.297 Omega cm(2) in turn. The cell with Co-GDC interlayers sintered above 1250 degrees C showed high stability due to the constant ohmic resistance and stable triple phase boundaries (TPBs) of cathode, which were proved by impedance, distribution of relaxation time (DRT) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Sr migration was fully prevented by the Co-GDC interlayer sintered above 1250 degrees C after the cell operating for 100 h as showed by Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), which was helpful for the long-term stability of the solid oxide fuel cell.

Abstract:Symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells (SSOFCs) could be alternative energy conversion devices due to their simple fabrication process and low cost. Herein, perovskite La0.6Ce0.1Sr0.3Fe0.95Ru0.05O3-d (LCSFR) was synthesized and evaluated as a high-performance electrode for SSOFCs based on the electrolyte of La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-d (LSGM). LCSFR retains their stable perovskite crystal structure in both reducing and oxidizing atmospheres, though a minor amount of LaSrFeO4 phase is present under reducing conditions. Morphology investigation shows that homogeneously dispersed Ru metallic nanoparticles are exsolved on the surface of LCSFR after being reduced. The polarization resistance (Rp) of LCSFR-CGO (Ce0.9Gd0.1O2-d) is about 0.11 U,cm2 at 800 degrees C in air, while the value of Rp for LCSFR-CGO in wet H2 (3% H2O) increases up to 0.32 U,cm2. The symmetrical LCSFR-CGO|LSGM|LCSFR-CGO cell demonstrates a performance with an open circuit potential (OCV) of 1.07 V and a maximum peak power density of 904 mW/cm2 at 800 degrees C using wet H2 as the fuel. Abstract:The La0.6Sr0.4Fe03.5-Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95-delta (LSF-GDC) support with large straight open pores was formed by the phase inversion tape method, and used as a cathode for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) comprising GDC electrolyte and Ni-GDC anode. La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-delta (LSC) nano-particles were deposited deeply inside the cathode using the impregnation method. The single cell with the LSC-modified cathode exhibited a maximum power density of 726 mW cm(-2) at 750 degrees C, much higher than the one with the un-modified cathode (298 mW cm(-2)). The polarization resistance determined with the impedance spectroscopy was 0.025 Omega cm(2) for the former, which was one order of magnitude smaller than that for the latter. It is concluded that the presence of large straight open pores in the phase inversion-derived cathode allows for easy impregnation of catalytically active nano -particles, enlarging the triple-phase-boundaries for oxygen reduction reaction and hence enhancing the electrochemical performance of the cathode-supported SOFCs.

Abstract:Performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is hindered by the sluggish catalytic kinetics on the surfaces of cathode materials. It has recently been reported that improved electrochemical activity of perovskite oxides can be obtained with the cations or the oxides of some metallic elements at the surface. Here, we used a cost-effective plasma glow charge method as a generic tool to deposit nano-size metallic particles onto the surface of SOFC materials. Ni nano-scale patterns were successfully coated on the La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (LSCF) surface. The microstructure could be well controlled. The kinetics of oxygen exchange on the modified LSCF surface was promoted significantly, confirmed by electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR) measurement.

Abstract:The commercialization of Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) has always been limited by the poor catalytic activity and the severe degradation of cathode in the intermediate and low operating temperature. Here we report a Gd0.8Ce0.2O1.9-delta (GDC) coated La0.8Sr0.2Co0.2Fe0.8O3-delta (LSCF) composite cathode material, which can significantly improve the electrochemical performance and durability of LSCF cathode. The effects of different GDC coating thickness on the electrochemical performance and long-term working stability of LSCF cathode are investigated, and the optimal coating thickness is established. The polarization impedance of GDC coated LSCF (LSCF@GDC) cathode with 9 nm of GDC coating is 0.08 U cm(2) at 800 degrees C, which is only one quarter of that of the raw LSCF cathode, and the degradation rate of constant current polarization with 100 mA cm(-2) is only 0.42%/100 h at 700 degrees C, which is far less than that of the raw LSCF cathode. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show that the degree of Sr segregation decreases with the increase of the thickness of the coated GDC layer. Abstract:La0.8Sr0.2Co0.5Fe0.5O3−δ (LSCF) cathodes infiltrated with electrocatalytically active Pd and (Gd,Ce)O2 (GDC) nanoparticles are investigated as high performance cathodes for the O2 reduction reaction in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). Incorporation of nano-sized Pd and GDC particles significantly reduces the electrode area specific resistance (ASR) as compared to the pure LSCF cathode; ASR is 0.1Ωcm2 for the reaction on a LSCF cathode infiltrated with 1.2mgcm−2 Pd and 0.06Ωcm2 on a LSCF cathode infiltrated with 1.5mgcm−2 GDC at 750°C, which are all significantly smaller than 0.22Ωcm2 obtained for the reaction on a conventional LSCF cathode. The activation energy of GDC- and Pd-impregnated LSCF cathodes is 157 and 176kJmol−1, respectively. The GDC-infiltrated LSCF cathode has a lower activation energy and higher electrocatalytic activity for the O2 reduction reaction, showing promising potential for applications in IT-SOFCs.
Improving the Stability of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ Electrode for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells by Introducing Sintering Inhibitors

Abstract:In this study, nano-sized Al2O3 and Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 (GDC) particles are added to La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF) cathode material as sintering inhibitors for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) to improve the stability of the cell performance. Studies reveal that as the amount of the inhibitors increases, the sintering activation energy of the composite LSCF sample increases, resulting in retarded sintering kinetics indicated by the suppressed grain size of the sintered composite LSCF cathode. Long-term durability tests show that due to the enhanced stability of the microstructure of the composite LSCF cathode, the composite cathode exhibits improved performance stability. Furthermore, both the Al2O3 and GDC additions can improve the hardness and elastic modulus of the cathode, while the electrical conductivity of both cathodes exceed 100 S/cm and can still meet the requirements for the SOFC in the operation temperature range of 600–800 °C. In light of the boosted electrochemical durability of the Al2O3-added LSCF cathode and much lower cost of Al2O3 compared to the rare-earth element based GDC materials, LSCF cathode with a proper amount of the nano-sized Al2O3 inhibitors is a good solution to enhance the mechanical property, electrochemical durability of LSCF cathode for the SOFCs at low cost.

Abstract:La2NiO4+δ (LNO) impregnated La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF) cathodes were prepared and the effects of the impregnation on the electrical conductivity and oxygen surface exchange property were studied to reveal the enhancement mechanism of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activities. Results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) with distribution of relaxation times (DRT) deconvoluting and electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR) indicate that LNO impregnation into LSCF cathodes enhances the oxygen diffusion process and oxygen surface exchange property. The optimal ORR catalytic activity is achieved after LNO impregnation for two times on the LSCF scaffold (LNO2-LSCF). LNO2-LSCF cathodes also have outstanding performance for their compromise thermal expansion coefficients (TEC) and conductivities.

Abstract:Solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) can electrochemically convert CO2 to CO at the gas-solid interface with a high current density and Faradaic efficiency, which has attracted increasing attentions in recent years. Exploring efficient catalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) at the cathode is a grand challenge for the research and development of SOEC. Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-delta (SFM) is one kind of promising cathode materials for SOEC, but suffers from insufficient activity for CO2RR. Herein, Gd0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (GDC) nanoparticles were infiltrated onto the SFM surface to construct a composite GDC-SFM cathode and improve the CO2RR performance in SOEC. The current density over the GDC infiltrated SFM cathode with a GDC loading of 12.8 wt% reaches 0.446 A cm(-2) at 1.6V and 800 degrees C, which is much higher than that over the SFM cathode (0.283 A cm(-2)). Temperature-programmed desorption of CO2 measurements suggest that the infiltration of GDC nanoparticles significantly increases the density of surface active sites and three phase boundaries (TPBs), which are beneficial for CO2 adsorption and subsequent conversion. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicate that the polarization resistance of 12.8 wt% GDC-SFM cathode was obviously decreased from 0.46 to 0.30 Omega cm(2) after the infiltration of GDC nanoparticles. Abstract:Individual intermediate temperature SOFC fuel cells are made by spreading nanometric sized La_(0.6)Sr_(0.4)Co_(0.2)Fe_(0.8)O_3(LSCF) on a combined anode/electrolyte plate.The process of pulverized LSCF's phase formation,and the structural property of LSCF cathodes in individual SOFC cells were studied by X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electronic(SEM) and transmission electronic microscopy.The effect of the synthesizing technology,of the original powder used and that of the sintering temperature,as well as other factors,on crystallization and catalytic activation of LSCF's cathodes have been studied.Results indicate that with the glycine-nitrate process,single phase LSCF perovskite can be obtained at 650℃;by ball milling the original powder for 3 hours prior to sintering,perfect crystals and crystalline structures can be obtained;LSCF's activation property reduces with rising sintering temperature.The cathode assumes a rather satisfactory structure and has a good oxygen reduction zone in sintered at 1000℃.Figs 4,table 1 and refs 13.

Abstract:A dense, conformal, thin-film coating of Pr0.75Sr0.2MnO3−δ (PSM) and PrSrCoMnO6–δ (PSCM) on a state-of-the-art La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (LSCF)-based cathode for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) has drastically enhanced the electro-catalytic activity and stability of the cathode, suggesting that they are excellent electro-catalysts for surface modification of SOFC cathodes. The catalyst coating is introduced by a low-cost, one-step solution infiltration process.

Abstract:The performance of the SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3−δ(SCF)–La0.45Ce0.55O2−δ(LDC) composite cathodes was studied in this paper. The composite cathodes were prepared by screen-printing, and then sintered at 1200°C for 2h. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cathodic polarization test were carried out to investigate the electrochemical properties of the composite cathodes. The results showed that the composite cathodes had superior electrochemical performance compared to that of the pure SCF cathodes. Through optimizing the structures of composite cathodes, the cathodic overpotential of triple-layer SCF–LDC composite cathodes was only 23mV at 0.3Acm−2. The specific ohmic resistance, charge transfer resistance and gas phase diffusion resistance of the triple-layer SCF–LDC cathodes were the lowest for the SCF–LDC composite cathodes, and they were 0.1Ωcm2, 0.01Ωcm2 and 0.1Ωcm2 respectively at 800°C. The changes were attributable to the enlargement of triple phases boundary (tpb) and enhancement of the adhesion between electrode and electrolyte by adding LDC to the cathode material.

Abstract:Solution impregnated La0.8Sr0.2Co0.8Ni0.2O3+Gd-doped CeO2 (LSCN+GDC) cathodes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC) are prepared and their electrochemical properties are evaluated and compared with the conventional LSCN cathodes. The results indicate that the cathode performance can be enhanced by the presence of the nanosized microstructure produced with the solution impregnation method. It is determined that the amount of LSCN loading in the LSCN+GDC composite cathode needs to be higher than 35wt% in order to achieve a performance superior to that of the conventional LSCN cathode. The optimum amount of LSCN loading is in the range of 45–55wt% with an activation energy near 1.32eV for oxygen reduction. At temperatures between 600 and 750°C, the polarization resistance of the 55wt% LSCN loaded LSCN+GDC cathode is in the range of 1.07 and 0.08Ωcm2, which is only about one half of that for the conventional cathode.
