Abstract:Efficient and stable water purification is essential for the protection of water resources. Current adsorbents based on metal-organic frameworks face limitations of restricted active sites and single adsorption objects. In this study, we developed a cost-effective and environmentally friendly Tea-L-CDs@Ce-UiO-66-F4 composites by growing Tea and L-tryptophan carbon dots (Tea-L-CDs) over Ce-UiO-66-F4 MOF, and the interaction force was enhanced by hydrogen bonding (-F/O/N...H-O-, -F/O/N...H-N-, etc.) to achieve universal adsorption. In detail, the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of the adsorbent for trypan blue (TB), congo red (CR), and CR (adjust pH) was 773.4, 1428.6, and 4761.9 mg/g. The universal experiment showed that the composites exhibited excellent qm for alizarin red S (ARS, 662.7 mg/g) and rhodamine B (RdB, 374.0 mg/g). Meanwhile, Tea-L-CDs@Ce-UiO66-F4 composites maintained good anti-interference ability (salt solution, temperature, etc.). Remarkably, the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for dyes exceeded 97 % of qm within 1 min of contact time. The adsorption performance of synthetic material for TB, CR, ARS, and RdB is better than most of the adsorbents, especially the qm for TB is higher than any adsorbent previously reported. Besides, this adsorbent had excellent storage stability in the air for 30 days. Based on this nanomaterial, we successfully developed an automated dye filtration and contamination assessment system for blocking dye-attached adsorbent and online detection of dye residues after water purification. Thus, the synthesized Tea-L-CDs@Ce-UiO-66-F4 composites, with universal adsorption, high efficiency, and good storage stability, hold great potential for wastewater purification.
Silver-containing Cation Exchange Resin: Synthesis and Application

Abstract:Cation exchange resins are widely used for water softening and demineralization all over the world. Deposition, metabolism, and growth of bacteria and fungi on the resin beads cause capacity and performance losses, especially during repeated use in cyclic and long-term operations. Over the last decades, modification of different materials by silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has demonstrated to present significant opportunities in mitigating biofouling problems. The paper deals with a novel facile technique of introducing silver colloids (AgC) into cation exchange resin, providing the formation of silver micro- and nano-inclusions on the cation resin beads. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements have confirmed a spherical shape and uniform distribution of AgC (50 – 1000 nm) on the surface of the resin. To evaluate the antibacterial and fungicidal properties of AgC on the cation resin beads, we have used Aureobasidium sp., Penicillium sp., and Staphylococcus aureus cultures. AgC coating has proved to efficiently prevent bacteria/biofilm growth on the cation resin beads and thereby significantly increase the service life of the cation exchange resin, especially in hot climatic conditions. Possible antibiofouling mechanisms of the modified nanocomposite cationite have been discussed. Since 2020, the modified silver-containing cationite has been successfully utilized for water softening systems of boiler equipment in Uzbekistan, demonstrating the suitability of the suggested facile coating technique for reducing fouling of cation-exchange resin.

Removal of Fluoride from Geothermal Water by Waste-Synthesized Al(OH)3-HAP@ZMS Composite Adsorbent: Sorption Capability and Mechanism

Abstract:The use of industrial and biological waste to synthesize adsorbent materials for the treatment of high fluorinated geothermal water is a cost-effective way to address the fluorine pollution problem while also reusing waste resources. In this study, modified hydroxyapatite-loaded zeolite molecular sieve composites (Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS) were synthesized using fly ash and shell as precursors, which were then cation doped and compound modified to ensure adsorption while remaining cost-effective. When the material ratio of ZMS to Al(OH) 3 -HAP was 1:6, the best adsorption material was obtained. Under the optimum adsorption conditions (dosage = 6 g/L, T = 50 °C), Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS achieved a removal rate of 92.5% and an adsorption capacity of 1.56 mg/g for 10 mg/L F − solution and can reduce the F − concentration to below the national standard concentration of 1 mg/L. The fitting of kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic data revealed that F − adsorption by Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich model, confirming that the adsorption process was primarily chemisorption and multilayer adsorption. The adsorption processes included electrostatic attraction, ion exchange between -OH and F − , complexation of fluoro-aluminum, and co-precipitation of Ca 2+ with F − . At the same time, Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS demonstrated good anti-interference performance in natural waters against co-existing ions and some heat resistance. Therefore, the composite adsorbent Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS, as an effective and environmentally friendly low-cost adsorbent, is expected to achieve the practical engineering application of geothermal water defluoridation in Guanzhong, maximizing the dual benefits of "fluoride remove" and "waste resource reuse."

Abstract:Water pollution remains a serious problem for aquatic organism and human beings. Developing an efficient material which can simultaneously remove and convert pollutants into low or no harmful compounds is an essential issue. Targeting at this goal, a multifunctional and amphoteric wastewater treatment material of Co-MOF and functionalized cellulose-based composite (CMC/SA/PEI/ZIF-67) was designed and prepared. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sodium alginate (SA) were selected as support to construct an interpenetrating network structure and made it crosslinked with polyethyleneimine (PEI) for further in situ growth of ZIF-67 with good dispersion. The material was characterized using an appropriate set of spectroscopic and analytical techniques. When applied in the adsorption of heavy metal oxyanions with no adjustment of pH, the adsorbent could completely decontaminate Cr(VI) at both low and high initial concentrations with good reduction rates. The adsorbent maintained good reusability after five cycles. Meanwhile, the cobalt species of CMC/SA/PEI/ZIF-67 can activate peroxymonosulfate to generate high oxidizing substances (such as SO 4 ˉ · and ·OH ˉ radicals) to degrade cationic rhodamine B dye within 120 min, thus indicating the amphoteric and catalytic nature of our CMC/SA/PEI/ZIF-67 adsorbent. The mechanism of the adsorption and catalytic process was also discussed based with the assistance of different characterization analysis.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have been extensively studied in the removal of pollutants in wastewater. However, MOFs, which are usually in powder form, suffer from complex separation that hinder their practical application. Herein, a composite adsorbent material, (wood aerogel), has been successfully fabricated through in-situ anchoring of ZIF-67 rhombic dodecahedron on the wood aerogel obtained by selectively removing lignin and hemicellulose from natural wood. WA with lamellar structure provided sufficient attachment sites for ZIF-67, and the content of ZIF-67 in the composite reached 32.65 wt%. ZIF-67 with 1 μm in grain size maintained its crystallinity when it was introduced to the surface of WA. The effects of pH, contact time, initial concentration, temperature, coexisting ions and humic acid on tetracycline (TC) adsorption were investigated. The composite showed excellent TC adsorption capacity (273.84 mg·g−1 at 298 K), which was comparable to most previously reported adsorbents. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model described the adsorption process well. Adsorption thermodynamic studies implied that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, the possible adsorption mechanism was proposed. The TC removal efficiency dropped from 94.09% to 80.27% after 3 cycles, revealing the composite could be recycled. The leaching of cobalt was measured to be within the permissible range, indicating that no serious secondary contamination would be caused during using the composite. The superior adsorption performance coupled with compressibility, light weight and facile separation gave the potential to effectively remove TC from water.

Abstract:This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the implementation of ZIF‐8 and its composites for the removal of dyes from wastewater. Various synthesis methods, structural characteristics and dye adsorption performance of ZIF‐8 and its composites are discussed. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism is also discussed in details. The presence of dyes in wastewater poses a significant environmental challenge due to their permanence toxicity and potential to harm ecosystems. Because of their high porosity and adjustable characteristics, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have become attractive materials for effective dye removal. Among various MOFs, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have garnered significant attention, especially ZIF‐8, for its excellent stability, significant porosity, adjustable pore size and remarkable adsorption capacity. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the implementation of ZIF‐8 and its composites for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. The various synthesis methods, structural characteristics and dye adsorption performance of ZIF‐8 and its composites are discussed. Furthermore, impact of the different factors such as pH, temperature, dye concentration, contact time etc. were also highlighted. Moreover, the detailed adsorption mechanism was also discussed. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives in the production of materials based on ZIF‐8 for the removal of dyes were also presented.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks with highly porous structures, especially their ability to form composites with various functional smart materials, can be employed as an efficient adsorbent in water refinement. Composite MOFs, combining MOF with other functional materials, can address some observed weaknesses of MOFs such as low stability in aqueous and acidic-base media, low thermal and chemical stability, and low absorption capacity. This paper focuses on the study of MOF composites and their applications for the removal of inorganic toxic compounds containing heavy metals, iodine, phosphate, nitrites, and chlorides from wastewater using adsorption and degradation techniques. MOF composites based on carbon compounds, nanoparticles, and polymers are introduced. In addition, the absorption mechanism and role of each portion of the composite for the absorption of analyte molecules are described. It is shown that physical adsorption, electrostatic interaction, coordination bond, ion exchange, and hydrogen bond play a significant role in trapping ions inside the composite structure.

Abstract:MOF composites with selective, eminent adsorption ability, recycling performance, low cost, and green sustainable approaches as effective environmental adsorbents, have acquired increasing attention, specifically for wastewater treatment. Organic contaminants are easily released into the water through various man-made activities such as numerous synthetic pesticides and detergents, food additives, pharmaceuticals, insecticides, dyes, natural and synthetic fibers, waste solvents, and volatile organic compounds. All of them are dangerous and resistant to different ways of degradation. Since even extremely small amounts of these contaminants in water lead to many problems in the environment and human health, water purification of these impurities has been of great interest to scientists in recent decades. Various strategies have been devised to prevent their environmental malicious effects, and in the case of wastewater purification, a lot of research is underway to find better ways for this purpose. The use of MOF composites on a commercial scale is still a long way off, but researchs clearly demonstrates their promise for treating water contaminated by organic compounds. Thus, this review focuses on studying and summarizing adsorptive and degradative removal of different organic toxic impurities such as dyes, pharmaceuticals, and organic solvents as well as organic volatile compounds by using MOFs composites. In addition, challenges in further development of MOF composites are discussed. According to this study, MOF composites play a pivotal role in the adsorption and removal of polluting agents from wastewater. Combining MOFs with other functional materials can reduce the disadvantages of individual components.

Abstract:The abuse of ciprofloxacin (CIP) has caused considerable worry because it not only seriously contaminates the environment but also endangers the ecology. Thus, effective antibiotic wastewater treatment technologies should be explored. In this paper, Hypericum residues were first pretreated with acidic deep eutectic solvents (DES) to remove lignin and hemicellulose (DH1 and DH2). Then, zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67) were loaded on the wood to obtain four composites (collectively referred to as DH/ZIF), which were used for CIP removal from wastewater. The enlarged pore size of the wood's provided sufficient attachment sites for ZIF-8 and ZIF-67, which facilitated the efficient adsorption of CIP by the composites. The adsorption of CIP by all four composites (DH1/ZIF-8, DH2/ZIF-8, DH1/ZIF-67, DH2/ZIF-67) was above 1400 mg/g. The results of characterization, data fitting and parameterization suggest that pore filling, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions and π-π stacking are the main mechanisms of CIP adsorption. In summary, DESs show great potential and broad utility in modifying waste biomass and compounding it with MOF to remove antibiotic contaminants.

Abstract:The use of antibiotics and dyes has resulted in severe water pollution and health risks; therefore, it is urgent to remove them from water sources. Among the most common methods for removing harmful water contaminants, adsorption and photodegradation are the most economical, simple, and reusable. Due to their high porosity, adjustability, and crystal structure, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the effective adsorbents and photocatalysts. A typical MOF material is zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/67 (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67), comprising essentially of the metal atoms Zn and 2-methylimidazole (2- MIM). ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 have unique properties that make them efficient in water treatment due to high adsorption capacities and being good hosts for photocatalytic materials. In this article, a review study of the design and methods of synthesis of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 composites is presented. An introduction to the current research on the role of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 compounds as adsorbents and photocatalysts for wastewater pollution removal is provided. In this review study, we aim to supply a mechanistic perspective on the use of ZIF-8/67 composites in wastewater purification and present novel visions for the development of extremely effective ZIF-8/67-based adsorbents and photocatalysts. To unlock the full potential of ZIF-8/67 composites in dye and antibiotic removal and water recycling, current difficulties will be discussed in detail.

Abstract:Water pollution has become one of the most worrisome environmental problems due to its harmful to human health and environmental safety. Thus, the design and development of robust and porous materials for detection and removal of pollutants from wastewater is extremely significant. Herein, a water-stable urea-containing 3D Cd-based metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Cd(L)0.5(bpe)0.5(H2O)]·x(solv)} n (MOF-1) (H4L = 5,5′-(((1,4-phenylenebis(azanediyl))bis(carbonyl))bis(azanediyl))diisophthalic acid) was prepared using urea-functionalized tetracarboxylate H4L ligand. The activated MOF-1 (MOF-1a) showed fast, sensitive, selective, and recyclable discrimination of nitrofurazone (NFZ) and nitrofurantoin (NFT) antibiotics, 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) explosive, as well as Cr2O7 2− by strong luminescence quenching and obvious red-shift of maximum emission. Unfortunately, MOF-1a has low adsorption capacity for the above pollutants owing to its small pore. To improve this disadvantage, MOF-1 crystals were in situ grown on the macroporous melamine foam (MF) by a facile one-pot solvothermal method, generating a MOF-1@MF composite with stability and high voids. The MOF-1@MF exhibited rapid, enhanced, and recyclable adsorption capacity toward NFZ, NFT, TNP, and Cr2O7 2− in water or even aqueous solutions with different pH values. Combination of the accessible functional sites in MOF-1 and macroporous structure of MF makes MOF-1@MF composite stand out as an excellent adsorbent in wastewater treatment. This work not only presents a water-stable MOF for selective recognition of NFZ, NFT, TNP, and Cr2O7 2−, but also provides a facile one-pot strategy to prepare MOF-based composites for high-performance removal of above pollutants from water, promoting their practical application in water quality monitoring and wastewater purification.

Abstract:Water purification from As(III)-contaminated groundwater is difficult but highly needed. Herein, a new polylactic acid ZIF-8 biocomposite nanofiber mat (ZIF-8@PLA/NFM) was fabricated using an electrospinning technique for As(III) decontamination. The active component, ZIF-8 nanoparticles, are uniformly embedded in sustainable PLA fibers and can be rapidly contacted by As(III), achieving fast kinetics and high utilization of nanoparticles. The removal experiments show that the ZIF-8@PLA/NFM can effectively remove As(III), especially in combination with H 2 O 2 . The 50%-ZIF-8@PLA/NFM with 1 mM H 2 O 2 reduced 1000 μg/L As(III) to less than 10 μg/L in just 5 min through the synergy of oxidation and adsorption. The maximum sorption capacity for As(III) on 50-ZIF-8@PLA/NFM was 11.61 ± 0.99 mg/g, which increased to 39.25 ± 3.84 mg/g with the addition of H 2 O 2 . It performed well in the pH range of 4–9. The combination of H 2 O 2 broadened its effective pH operating range (3–10) as well as enhanced interference resistance, enabling deep removal of As(III) across a wide range of water environments. The As(III)-spiked natural water (100 μg/L) could be purified to drinking standard level by ZIF-8@PLA/NFM within 60 min. In combination with H 2 O 2 , the removal efficiency was reduced by only 1.5% at the fifth reuse. Macroscopic experiments and microscopic characterization suggest that the adsorption follows the inner-sphere complexes mechanism. The study provides a novel approach for the fabrication of efficient, easy-to-use, and sustainable MOFs-based biocomposite for As(III) decontamination.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, we prepared Zn-MOFs as an ordinary, low-cost, and efficiency method taking advantage of zinc( ii ) acetate monohydrate and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid in microwave-assisted ball milling. The Zn-MOFs were measured via scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetry. We explored its use as a photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride and Congo red from aqueous solutions. The results demonstrate that the kinetic model was appropriate for the removal of organic pollutants. In general, it is feasible, inexpensive, and effective to use metal organic framework (MOF) to treat waste liquid. Therefore, our findings indicate that Zn-MOFs have broad application vista in wastewater purification.

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF) particles are one of the most promising adsorbents for removing organic contaminants from wastewater. However, powder-type MOF particles face challenges in terms of utilization and recovery. In this study, a novel bead-type adsorbent was prepared using activated carbon based on the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (AC-ZIF-8) and a regenerated cellulose hydrogel for dye removal. AC-ZIF-8 particles with a large surface area were obtained by carbonization and chemical activation with KOH. The AC-ZIF-8 powders were efficiently immobilized in hydrophilic cellulose hydrogel beads via cellulose dissolution/regeneration. The prepared AC-ZIF-8/cellulose hydrogel (AC-ZIF-8/CH) composite beads exhibit a large specific surface area of 1412.8 m 2 /g and an excellent maximum adsorption capacity of 565.13 mg/g for Rhodamine B (RhB). Moreover, the AC-ZIF-8/CH beads were effective over a wide range of pH, temperatures and for different types of dyes. These composite beads also offer economic benefits through desorption of dyes for recycling. The AC-ZIF-8/CH beads can be produced in substantial amounts and used as fillers in a fixed-bed column system, which can purify the continuous inflow of dye solutions. These findings suggest that our simple approach for preparing high-performance adsorbent beads will broaden the application of dye adsorbents, oil–water separation, and catalysts.

Abstract:To find sustainable water solutions, the development of high capacity, scalable robust adsorbents and mechanistic insight about their performance offers the potential to effectively address the global challenges of water scarcity and water contamination. We herein rationally design Zr-cluster defective MOF-808 (MOF-808def) with exposed carboxyl groups, a robust zirconium metal–organic framework (Zr-MOF), exhibiting high adsorption capacity (qmax ∼ 296 mg·g−1) coupled with high selectivitity for tetracycline (TC) antibiotics, outperforming other water-stable MOFs, commercial and inorganic nano-adsorbents. MOF-808def functions well across a wide range of contaminant concentrations (from trace to high-concentration) and even in harsh conditions (e.g., high acidity and salinity). Both experimental and simulation results indicate that the mechanism of adsorption involves both physisorption and chemisorption via hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions (EIs) and C-O-C covalent bonding via esterification. Computational studies confirm that hydrogen bonding plays a key role in strong guest–host interactions between TCs and MOF-808def. Further, defects resulting from missing-Zr-clusters in MOF-808def are confirmed to enhance adsorption performance. Specifically, the defect sites present exposed carboxyl groups from MOF-808def linker ligands that selectively react with –OH groups (phenol and tertiary alcohol moieties) in TC via esterification. These defects drive highly selective adsorption even at low concentrations of TCs (e.g., 500 ppb). Aiming for more than enhanced performance, economic estimation and scalable engineered reactor tests revealed that MOF-808def and its nano-composites are free of environmental risks and offer promise for sustainable water treatment at pilot scale. The use of defect-engineering rationales is a molecule-level design concept that could be generally useful for the development of the next generation of MOF-based nano-adsorbents for sustainable water treatment applications.

Abstract:The protection and regeneration of the water environment is currently one of the most critical concerns for the sustainable development of human society. To solve the water crisis, the use of capacitive deionization (CDI) technology to extract fresh-water that is suitable for human consumption from abundant surface-water is a feasible solution. In this work, a cobalt benzimidazole frameworks (ZIF-9) derived carbon composites with a unique quasi-microcubic morphology is synthesized and used the as-prepared materials as an electrode material for the CDI. Interestingly, the ZIF-9 derived carbon composites exhibit an impressive desalination capacity of 55.4 mg g-1 and can be reused. Measurements in surface-water (Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Slender West Lake, Initial rainwater, Rain water) show that this CDI technology based on ZIF-9 derived carbon composites not only has a strong adsorption effect on metal ions but also can remarkably kill microorganisms. The results show that the technology can effectively kill bacteria (Escherichia coli and Bacillus) and algae with 95% and 91.7% inhibition rates, respectively. This work provides a valuable example for the use of metal-organic framework-derived carbon composites as high-performance electrode materials of CDI and opens a new direction for promoting the application of CDI in surface-water.

Abstract:The inherent toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of dyes that are discharged into aquatic ecosystems, harming the health of humans and animals. ZIF-8 based composites are regarded as good adsorbents for the breakdown of dyes in order to remove or degrade them. In the course of this research, metal-organic framework materials known as ZIF-8 and its two stable composites, ZIF-8/BiCoO3 (MZBC) and ZIF-8/BiYO3 (MZBY), were produced via a hydrothermal process and solvothermal process, respectively, for the dangerous Congo red (CR) dye removal from the solution in water using adsorption method. According to the findings, the most significant amount of CR dye that could be adsorbed is onto MZBC, followed by MZBY and ZIF-8. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was used effectively to match the data for adsorption behavior and was confirmed using the Langmuir isotherm equation. There is a possibility that the pH and amount of adsorbent might influence the adsorption behavior of the adsorbents. According to the experiment results, the technique featured an endothermic adsorption reaction that spontaneously occurred. The higher adsorption capability of MZBC is because of the large surface area. This results in strong interactions between the functional groups on the surface of MZBC and CR dye molecules. In addition to the electrostatic connection between functional group Zn-O-H on the surface of ZIF-8 in MZBC and the -NH2 or SO3 functional group areas in CR molecules, it also includes the strong π-π interaction of biphenyl rings.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a prominent class of materials due to their large surface area and customized structures. This gives them specificity and high adsorption capacity while they lack mechanical strength and reusability. Integrating MOFs with polysaccharide matrix may retain MOF characteristics along with imparting structural integrity. In the present study, zirconium MOF-based fenugreek composite (FG/Zr-AIPA) beads were synthesised by a single droplet method and utilised for removal of Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III) from aqueous solution. The structure, morphology and composition of beads were evaluated by FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, FESEM, EDX, XPS and zeta potential analysis. Adsorption isotherm, kinetics and thermodynamics were studied for Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III) adsorption. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm study revealed that all the metal ions were adsorbed through a monolayer chemisorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was 344.43, 270.02 and 223.21 mg g −1 for Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III), respectively, based on the Langmuir isotherm study. The thermodynamics study revealed that the interaction between the metal ions and the composite beads was spontaneous and endothermic. The FG/Zr-AIPA composite beads exhibited good reusability for the removal of Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III). The results open new possibilities for the preparation of polysaccharide MOF-based composite beads which exhibit substantial potential for water treatment applications.
