Abstract:Potable water and energy shortage have become global issues. With the limited water adsorption performance and regeneration conditions of traditional water adsorbents, innovation in water adsorbents have significant practical implications. Due to the abundant verities of adsorption sites and adjustable pore structures, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered promising water adsorbents with tailorable regeneration conditions, controllable absorption humidity range, and superior water capacity. Herein, the adsorption mechanism and strategies for water uptake MOFs are summarized. In addition, the recent advances of MOFs focused on atmospheric water harvesting, indoor humidity control, adsorption-driven heat pump, and industrial chemicals dehydration are reviewed, accompanied by an evolving prospect and possible challenges for the application implementation.

Abstract:Abstract: Removing harmful species from water is essential for the protection of the environment and human health. Among various treatment techniques, adsorption is particularly attractive because of its advantages of easy operation, high removal efficiency, environmental friendliness, and simple regeneration of the adsorbent. As the key factor of this technique, the choice of adsorbent is vital. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used as adsorbents for the removal of dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and metal ions from aqueous solutions because of their high porosity, structural diversity, and highly tunable pore shape/size and surface functionality. This work systematically reviews the recent progress on the application of different types of MOFs, e.g., ZIF, MIL, and UiO series, in the field of adsorption of these harmful species. Modification of novel MOF materials can greatly improve their adsorption performance. This review provides a direction for the rational design of MOF adsorbents to effectively remove various pollutants from water.

Abstract:Because the pollutants produced by human activities have destroyed the ecological balance of natural water environment, and caused severe impact on human life safety and environmental security. Hence the task of water environment restoration is imminent. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), structured from organic ligands and inorganic metal ions, are notable for their outstanding crystallinity, diverse structures, large surface areas, adsorption performance, and excellent component tunability. The water stability of MOFs is a key requisite for their possible actual applications in separation, catalysis, adsorption, and other water environment remediation areas because it is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the material structure during utilization. In this article, we comprehensively review state-of-the-art research progress on the promising potential of MOFs as excellent nanomaterials to remove contaminants from the water environment. Firstly, the fundamental characteristics and preparation methods of several typical water-stable MOFs include UiO, MIL, and ZIF are introduced. Then, the removal property and mechanism of heavy metal ions, radionuclide contaminants, drugs, and organic dyes by different MOFs were compared. Finally, the application prospect of MOFs in pollutant remediation prospected. In this review, the synthesis methods and application in water pollutant removal are explored, which provide ways toward the effective use of water-stable MOFs in materials design and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Environmental pollution, a major public health issue, has gained widespread attention worldwide. Developing efficient technologies for capturing harmful substances is imperative for a cleaner, healthier environment. As typical porous materials with high crystallinity and functional flexibility, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) promise, among others, applications in the elimination of environmental contaminants. However, most MOFs materials have low decontamination efficiency, impeding the practical and advanced application of MOFs. Therefore, researchers have attempted to modify MOFs to introduce new functionalities to parent frameworks for obtaining composites suitable for specific functional tasks for the adsorption or catalytic removal of harmful pollutants. These modified MOFs represent remarkable progress in MOFs research and warrant a comprehensive review. In the current review, we highlight the current progress related to the representative functional modification of MOFs materials for air and water pollutant treatment. The first section provides a brief overview of MOFs classification. Next, the modification approaches of MOFs materials are summarized. In the subsequent sections, the applications of some representative functional modifications of MOFs for air and water decontamination, along with the related data and underlying mechanism, are discussed. Moreover, the stability, reusability, and reproducibility of modification MOFs materials are presented. Along the way, the limitations, subsisting challenges, and possible future trends are discussed. This review may not only inspire the rational design of MOF-modified materials but also encourage further relevant research.

Abstract:Water contamination is an increasing concern to mankind because of the increasing amount of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. To purify the polluted water, various techniques have been used to remove hazardous components. Unfortunately, traditional cleanup techniques with a low uptake capacity are unable to achieve water purification. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently shown potential in effective water pollutant isolation in terms of selectivity and adsorption capacity over traditional porous materials. The high surface area and versatile functionality of MOFs allow for the development of new adsorbents. The development of MOFs in a range of water treatments in the recent five years will be highlighted in this review, along with assessments of the adsorption performance relevant to the particular task. Moreover, the outlook on future opportunities for water purification using MOFs is also provided.

Abstract:The ever-expanding scale of industry and agriculture has led to the gradual increase of pollutants (e.g., heavy metal ions, synthetic dyes, and antibiotics) in water resources, and the ecology and wastewater are grave problems that need to be solved urgently and has attracted widespread attention from the research community and industry in recent years. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a type of organic-inorganic hybrid material with a distinctive 3D network crystal structure. Lately, MOFs have made striking progress in the fields of adsorption, catalytic degradation, and biomedicine on account of their large specific surface and well-developed pore structure. This review summarizes the latest research achievements in the preparation of pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and MOF derivatives for various applications including the removal of heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and other harmful substances in sewage. Furthermore, the working mechanisms of utilizing adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and membrane separation technologies are also briefly described for specific pollutants removal from sewage. It is expected that this review will provide inspiration and references for the synthesis of pristine MOFs as well as their composites and derivatives with excellent water treatment performance.

Abstract:With rapid population growth and increased water pollution, the global water situation is deteriorating. Due to this risk, it is now crucial to efficiently remove organic contaminants from water. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), due to their unique qualities including adjustable porosity, large pore volume, and excellent adsorption and regeneration properties have recently gained significant scientific interest in the field of water treatment. The knowledge mapping, classification, synthesis, and design of MOFs are described in this review of the literature in order to clarify the advancement of MOFs in the removal of organic contaminants from aqueous solutions. To generate fresh concepts for the use of MOFs in the treatment of organic pollutants, the mechanism of adsorption of organic pollutants in MOFs is described, the application trends of MOFs for the treatment of organic pollutants are reviewed, and the bottleneck issues and application prospects of MOFs are compiled.

Abstract:Water quality can have serious impacts on human health. One crucial issue of water pollution seriously affects our safety due to the continually emerging of discovered anthropogenic pollutants. The water treatment technologies are persistent improvement to adapt such new contaminants, which accelerates the evolution of materials science to explore solving the problems. Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) as the significant porous and multi-dimensional networks has been concerned for toxic pollutant elimination, especially probed the applications of outstanding layered 2D skeletons MOFs-based materials. The emphases of this review highlight the 2D MOFs-based materials used in water remediation and treatment strategies including adsorption and catalysis methods. Further, the prospects and challenges of 2D MOFs-based materials for water treatments applications would be surveyed meticulously for the future research and development.

Abstract:Rapid industrialization and agricultural development have resulted in the accumulation of a variety of harmful contaminants in water resources. Thus, various approaches such as adsorption, photocatalytic degradation and methods for sensing water contaminants have been developed to solve the problem of water pollution. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of coordination networks comprising organic-inorganic hybrid porous materials having organic ligands attached to inorganic metal ions/clusters via coordination bonds. MOFs represent an emerging class of materials for application in water remediation owing to their versatile structural and chemical characteristics, such as well-ordered porous structures, large specific surface area, structural diversity, and tunable sites. The present review is focused on recent advances in various MOFs for application in water remediation via the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of water contaminants. The sensing of water pollutants using MOFs via different approaches, such as luminescence, electrochemical, colorimetric, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques, is also discussed. The high porosity and chemical tunability of MOFs are the main driving forces for their widespread applications, which have huge potential for their commercial use.

Abstract:Water pollution is a long-standing problem in the natural environment. Various emerging organic and inorganic pollutants are major environmental contaminants in water bodies, such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs), industrial compounds, poly/perfluorinated compounds, and pesticides. The elimination of environmental contaminants in nature has been extensively investigated using a variety of classic physical, chemical and biological approaches, providing a solid base for advanced technology. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a newly discovered family of multifunctional porous materials with high porosity and excellent controllability, have demonstrated an undeniable power in water purification. In this review, we provide a valuable resource for researchers who intend to use the application of MOFs to remediate emerging contaminants (ECs) in bodies of water. Firstly, we briefly outline the traditional physical, chemical, and biological methods applied to remove a wide range of pollutants from water. Moreover, we summarize the application of MOFs as excellent adsorbents, catalysts, and enzyme immobilization carriers for treating pollutants in wastewater. And the challenges and perspectives in the current field were also discussed.

Abstract:The ineffective control of the release of pollutants into water has led to serious water pollution. Compared with conditions in the past, the polluting components in aquatic environments have become increasingly complex. Some emerging substances have led to a new threat to the safety of water. Therefore, developing cost-effective technologies for the remediation of water pollution is urgently needed. Adsorption has been considered the most effective operational unit in water treatment processes and thus adsorption materials have gained wide attention. Among them, metal organic frameworks (denoted as MOFs) have been rapidly developed in recent years due to their unique physicochemical performance. They are characterized by larger porosity and larger specific surface area, easier pore structure designing, and comfortable structural modification. In many fields such as adsorption, separation, storage, and transportation, MOFs show a better performance than conventional adsorption materials such as active carbon. Their performance is often dependent on their structural distribution. To optimize the use of MOFs, their fabrication should be given more attention, without being limited to conventional preparation methods. Alternative preparation methods are given in this review, such as diffusion, solvent thermal, microwave, and ion thermal synthesis. Furthermore, developing functionalized MOFs is an available option to improve the removal efficiencies of a specific contaminant through pre-synthetic modification and post-synthesis modification. Post-synthesis modification has become a recent research hotspot. The coupling of MOFs with other techniques would be another option to ameliorate the remediation of water pollution. On one hand, their intrinsic drawbacks may be reduced. On the other hand, their performance may be enhanced due to their interaction behaviors. Overall, such coupling technologies are able to enhance the performance of an individual material. Because the excellent performance of MOF materials has been widely recognized and their developments have received wide attention, especially in environmental fields, in the present work we provide a review of fabrication of MOFs so as to motivate readers to deepen their understanding of the use of MOFs.

In this minireview, adsorptive removal of organic substances, by using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), for our safe environment will be discussed. For example, removal of (i) pharmaceuticals/personal care products, pesticides, and dyes from water; (ii) S- or N-containing compounds from liquid fuel; and (iii) volatile organic compounds from air will be summarized. Abstract:<p>Heavy metals pollution in water is a global environmental issue, which has threatened the human health and environment. Thus, it is important to remove them under practical water environment. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with water-stable properties have attracted wide interest with regard to the capture of hazardous heavy metal ions in water. In this review, the synthesis strategy and postsynthesis modification preparation methods are first summarized for water-stable MOFs (WMOFs), and then the recent advances on the adsorption and photocatalytic reduction of heavy metal ions in water by WMOFs are reviewed. In contrast to the conventional adsorption materials, WMOFs not only have excellent adsorption properties, but also lead to photocatalytic reduction of heavy metal ions. WMOFs have coupling and synergistic effects on the adsorption and photocatalysis of heavy metal ions in water, which make it more effective in treating single pollutants or different pollutants. In addition, by introducing appropriate functional groups into MOFs or synthesizing MOF-based composites, the stability and ability to remove heavy metal ions of MOFs can be effectively enhanced. Although WMOFs and WMOF-based composites have made great progress in removing heavy metal ions from water, they still face many problems and challenges, and their application potential needs to be further improved in future research. Finally, this review aims at promoting the development and practical application of heavy metal ions removal in water by WMOFs.</p>

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a key focus in water treatment and monitoring due to their unique structural features, including extensive surface area, customizable porosity, reversible adsorption, and high catalytic efficiency. While numerous reviews have discussed MOFs in environmental remediation, this review specifically addresses recent advancements in modifying MOFs to enhance their effectiveness in water purification and monitoring. It underscores their roles as adsorbents, photocatalysts, and in luminescent and electrochemical sensing. Advancements such as pore modification, defect engineering, and functionalization, combined synergistically with advanced materials, have led to the development of recyclable MOF-based nano-adsorbents, Z-scheme photocatalytic systems, nanocomposites, and hybrid materials. These innovations have broadened the spectrum of removable contaminants and improved material recyclability. Additionally, this review delves into the creation of multifunctional MOF materials, the development of robust MOF variants, and the simplification of synthesis methods, marking significant progress in MOF sensor technology. Furthermore, the review addresses current challenges in this field and proposes potential future research directions and practical applications. Abstract:Water pollution is an increasingly serious environmental problem because many pollutants have carcinogenic effects on humans and aquatic organisms. Metal organic framework (MOF), made up of metal ions and multifunctional organic ligands, has been one of the most concerned materials because of its adjustable and regular pore structure. MOFs have always shown attractive advantages in membrane separation and adsorption technologies, among which water-stable MOFs are particularly prominent in wastewater treatment (WWT) applications. This review systematically summarizes the application of MOF membranes in membrane filtration, membrane pervaporation and membrane distillation. Also, the adsorption mechanisms of heavy metals, dyes and antibacterials in wastewater have been concluded. In order to tap the full application potential of pristine MOFs in sustainable wastewater treatment, current challenges are discussed in detail and future research directions are proposed.

Abstract:Concerns regarding water contamination are escalating due to the increasing presence of all types of pollutants in water sources, which pose serious health risks to humans and wildlife, disrupt ecosystems, and compromise the safety of drinking water. Addressing water contamination requires stringent regulations and increased public awareness, but especially, it requires the development of highly effective new technologies to decontaminate those aquatic environments that have been already polluted over the past few decades. Since the emergence of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), their use has been proposed in a multitude of fields, given their unique physicochemical properties, and one of the fields where a realistic application can be expected in the near future is water remediation. In particular, oxamidato-based biological MOFs (bioMOFs) have demonstrated, in recent years, unique properties such as extraordinary robustness, crystallinity and water- and pH-stability as well as very easy functionalisation, which situates them among the best adsorbents for this environmental purpose. In this review, we have summarised the most remarkable results of oxamidato-based bioMOFs in the field of water remediation. Moreover, on the basis of the reported results, we dare to suggest the real possibilities of application, in relevant real-world environments, for these and other MOFs, as well as the main obstacles that will need to be overcome, aiming to widening the range of applicability of MOFs and making solid headway towards sustainable development.

Abstract:Water is one of essential resources of modern society. Employing cost-effective technologies to treat water and wastewater is of vital importance for household uses, industries and the environment. Water-stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising innovative materials for water treatment, due to their versatility and properties such as large internal surface area, designable pore sizes, and chemical functionalities. In highly porous MOFs, metal center(s)/cluster(s) and organic ligands are linked with coordination bonds. This review paper presents the most recent developments in the industrial-scale synthesis of MOFs and applications in water purification. MOFs can be fabricated by several approaches; the microwave assisted continuous flow synthesis technologies can lead to higher production yields. The fabricated MOFs are then purified by the organic solvent and/or the solid separation, and activated by a few technologies (e.g., supercritical CO2). Process safety in production, reactors design, and process optimization are important in production. The shaping techniques for MOFs on supporting materials via surface grafting/coating or embedment can be used to fabricate the MOFs-based materials with the better stability suitable for industrial applications. MOFs demonstrate much better performances than the commercially available materials in adsorption, filtration, sensing, and catalysis. Toxicity from MOFs is mainly due to the chemicals involved in the production and nano-size effects on human cells. Mitigation strategies like environmental-friendly processes for fabrication of MOFs and shaping using polymer are suggested. Various advantages from MOFs make them suitable for water treatment in the near future.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Clean water is necessary in all areas of life, especially for our body. Fluoride in water has serious negative effects on human health and the environment. Effectively repairing fluoride-polluted water remains a critical mission. The adsorption mechanism and the evaluation on potential practical applications for fluoride removal by different MOFs are elucidated. Finally, future research opportunities and prospects of MOF-based materials for fluoride removal are proposed.

Abstract:The application of defect-engineered metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is gaining momentum during the decontamination of wastewater. Some of the defects introduced by the engineering processes into the MOFs include missing linkers, surfaces vacancies and missing clusters. These unsaturated coordination sites provide additional adsorption active sites and create more pore spaces that facilitate diffusion and mass transfer during the adsorptive removal of pollutants from wastewater. In this paper, the applications of water and chemically stable defective MOFs during adsorption of pollutants in wastewater are explored. The defective MOFs reviewed in this paper include Material of Institute Lavoisier series (MIL), University of Oslo series (UiO), Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks series (ZIF) and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology series (HKUST-1). Recent studies on the applications of these defective MOFs are highlighted with the aim of providing insights into their adsorption performance and clearly show the merits of such excellent adsorbents during wastewater decontamination. In addition, challenges and future perspectives of using defect-engineered MOFs during adsorption of pollutants from wastewater are also addressed in this paper.
