Abstract:The Mu2e experiment will search for the neutrino-less conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. An observation would be the first signal of charged lepton flavor violation and de facto evidence for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The clean signature of the conversion process offers an opportunity for a powerful search: Mu2e will probe four orders of magnitude beyond current limits, with real discovery potential over a wide range of well motivated new physics models. This goal requires an integrated system of solenoids that will create the most intense muon beam in the world, and suppression of all possible background sources. The Mu2e components are currently being constructed, with the experiment planned to begin operations in the Fermilab Muon Campus within the next few years.

Abstract:The observation of lepton flavour violation (LFV) in the charged lepton sector would be an unambiguous sign of physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), and thus, it is the channel of choice for many BSM searches. LFV searches in muon decays in particular benefit from the fact that muons can be easily produced at high rates. There is a global effort to search for LFV at high-intensity muon sources to which the upcoming Mu3e experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) will contribute. The Mu3e Collaboration aims to perform a background-free search for the LFV decay $\mu^+\to e^+e^-e^+$ with an unprecedented sensitivity in the order of $10^{-15}$ in the first phase of operation and $10^{-16}$ in the final phase - an improvement over the preceding SINDRUM experiment by four orders of magnitude. The high muon stopping rates and low momenta of the decay electrons make high demands on momentum and time resolution and on the data acquisition. The innovative experimental concept is based on a tracking detector built from novel ultra-thin silicon pixel sensors and scintillating fibres and tiles as well as online event reconstruction and filtering in real time.

Abstract:The MEG II experiment searches for the Charged Lepton Flavour Violating (CLFV) decay $\mu\rightarrow e \gamma$. This decay is foreseen by the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics at non observable rates through neutrino oscillation. Observing it would be a clear signal of new physics (e.g. SUSY-GUT). After publishing the current upper limit to the Branching Ratio (BR) of this decay in 2016, BR($\mu^+\rightarrow e^+ \gamma)<4.2\times10^{-13}$, the MEG experiment started the upgrade of its detector in order to increase the sensitivity by a factor 10, starting the MEG II phase. The aim of this work is to report a description of the new detectors design and performances, to present the results obtained in the 2018 pre-engineering run with all the new MEG II detectors installed, and to report on the current status of the experiment and its future prospects.

Abstract:Neutrino masses provide evidence of lepton flavour violation, but no violation in the interactions among the charged leptons has been observed yet. Many models of Physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) predict Charged Lepton Flavour Violation (CLFV) in a wide spectrum of processes with rates in reach of upcoming experiments. The experimental searches that provide the current best limits on the CLFV searches are reviewed, with a particular emphasis on the muon-based experiments that give the most stringent constraints on BSM parameter space. The next generation of muon-based experiments (MEG-II, Mu2e, COMET, Mu3e) aim to reach improvements by many orders of magnitude w.r.t. the current best limits, thanks to several technological advancements. We review popular heavy BSM theories, and we present the calculations of the predicted CLFV branching ratios, focusing on the more sensitive $\mu\to e$ sector.

Abstract:The observation of lepton flavour violation (LFV) in interactions involving charged leptons would be an unambiguous sign of physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Given that muons can be produced at high intensities, searches for LFV with muons are particularly sensitive. In a global initiative, ongoing and upcoming experiments are aiming to discover physics beyond the Standard Model in the three golden muon LFV channels: $\mu\to e\gamma$, $\mu\to eee$ and $\mu$-to-$e$ conversion on nuclei. With innovative detector concepts and new muon beam lines, these experiments will be able to investigate muon LFV in the coming years with sensitivities improved by up to four orders of magnitude compared to past searches. The current status of muon LFV searches is discussed and the ongoing MEG II and DeeMe experiments as well as the upcoming Mu2e, COMET and Mu3e experiments are presented.

Abstract:The Mu2e experiment searches for the neutrino-less muon to electron conversion in the field of a nucleus, which is a charged lepton flavor violating process. The goal of the experiment is to reach a single event sensitivity of 2.8 x 10^{-17}, setting an upper limit on the muon conversion rate at 6.7 x 10^{-17}. This corresponds to a four order of magnitude improvement with respect to the existing limits.

Abstract: The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for charged lepton flavor violation via the coherent conversion process mu- N --> e- N with a sensitivity approximately four orders of magnitude better than the current world's best limits for this process. The experiment's sensitivity offers discovery potential over a wide array of new physics models and probes mass scales well beyond the reach of the LHC. We describe herein the preliminary design of the proposed Mu2e experiment. This document was created in partial fulfillment of the requirements necessary to obtain DOE CD-2 approval.

Abstract:We briefly overview some theoretical aspects of charged lepton flavour violation in rare muon transitions and decays. Relying on the effective field theory approach (model-independent), we discuss the probing power of charged lepton flavour violation processes regarding the new physics scale, especially in what concerns muon-electron conversion in nuclei. We then illustrate how these processes can provide valuable information (allowing to constrain, falsify - or conversely to learn about the underlying new physics properties) for a few examples of well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. We finally comment on how leptonic CP violation should be carefully considered upon studies of charged lepton flavour violation in extensions of the Standard Model featuring heavy sterile fermions.

Study of charged Lepton Flavor Violation in electron muon interactions

Abstract:With the improvement of muon acceleration technology, it has received great interest to exploit high-energy muon beams for collision or target experiments. We investigate possible charged Lepton Flavor Violation (cLFV) processes mediated by an extra massive neutral gauge boson Zprime in electron muon interactions, either at a proposed electron muon collider or in a fixed target experiment with high-energy muon beam hitting electrons in the target. Based on Monte Carlo calculations and fast detector simulations, we study in detail our signal and possible backgrounds, giving the sensitivity results of cLFV signals at the 90% confidence level. Compared with current and prospective limits set by other experiments, electron muon interactions demonstrate significant advantages in the cLFV coupling strength sensitivity with tau in the final states. In addition, a special cLFV coupling combination, lambda_emu * lambda_mumu, can also be probed in our proposal.

General Signals for Charged Lepton Flavor Violating Decays

Abstract:We explore the most general phenomenology of charged lepton flavor violating (CLFV) decays of muon and tau leptons to the three body final states $(\bar{e}ee, \bar{\mu}\mu\mu, \bar{e}\mu\mu, \bar{\mu}\mu e,\bar{\mu}ee, \bar{e}e\mu)$. By constructing a complete basis of operators at each dimension, we derive the most general amplitudes for these decay processes. By considering constraints from unitarity and LEP, we show that operators of mass dimension 6 and 7 are the most likely to be observed in next generation experiments. Focusing on these dimensions, we compute the results of unpolarized (spin-averaged) decays parameterized in terms of the invariant masses of the daughter particles. For the $\mu \rightarrow \bar{e}ee$ decay, we also compute the differential decay rate for polarized decays, in anticipation of the experimental search Mu3e, which expects to have a muon beam with $\sim 90\%$ polarization. To determine the extent to which the operators may be distinguished experimentally, we plot the differential distributions for each operator, showing that the differential distributions leave only a few possible degenerate explanations. These results are adapted to treat $\ell\to \ell' \nu \bar{\nu}$, where the angular distribution of the outgoing charged lepton has enhanced distinguishing power. With many Standard Model extensions predicting these CLFV decays, these results will better enable upcoming searches to identify and/or constrain physics beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract:Muon lepton flavor processes are reviewed in connection with search for physics beyond the standard model. Several methods to distinguish different theoretical models are discussed for $\mu \to e \gamma$, $\mu \to 3 e$, and $\mu - e$ conversion processes. New calculation of the $\mu - e$ conversion rate is presented including a Higgs boson mediated effect in the supersymmetric seesaw model.

Fractionary Charged Particles Confronting Lepton Flavor Violation and the Muon's Anomalous Magnetic Moment

Abstract:In light of the recent result published by the Fermilab Muon $(g-2)$ experiment, we investigate a simple model that includes particles of fractional electric charges: a colour-singlet fermion and a scalar with charges $2/3e$ and $1/3e$, respectively. The impact of these particles on the anomalous muon's magnetic moment is examined, particularly the restrictions on their Yukawa couplings with the light leptons. Given that lepton flavor violation processes impose stringent constraints on certain scenarios beyond the Standard Model, we asses the one-loop contribution of the new particles to $(g-2)$ in order to identify regions in the parameter space consistent with the Fermilab results and compatible with the current and projected limits on the branching ratio $Br(\mu \rightarrow e \gamma)$. Taking into account the current lower bound for the masses of fractionary charged particles, which is around 634 GeV, we show that the mass of the scalar particle with fractional charge must exceed 1 TeV. In particular, we present some estimatives for double production of the colour-singlet fermion at the 14 TeV LHC. Finally, we also study the validity of our model in light of the QCD lattice results on the muon $(g-2)$.

A Comparative Study of Z′ Mediated Charged Lepton Flavor Violation at Future Lepton Colliders

Abstract:Abstract Charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) represents a transition between charged leptons of different generations that violates lepton flavor conservation, which is a clear signature of possible new physics beyond the standard model. By exploiting a typical example model of extra Z′ gauge boson, we perform a detailed comparative study on CLFV searches at several future lepton colliders, including a 240 GeV electron-positron collider and a TeV scale muon collider. Based on detailed signal and background Monte-Carlo studies with fast detector simulations, we derive the potentials in searching for Z′ mediated CLFV couplings with eμ, eτ and μτ of different future colliders. The results are compared with the current and prospect limits set by either low-energy experiments or the high-energy LHC experiments. The sensitivity of the τ related CLFV coupling strength at future lepton colliders will be significantly improved in comparison to the current best constraints and the prospect constraints for the μτ channel.

Abstract:Lepton flavor violating processes are highly suppressed in the Standard Model. Therefore, if observed, lepton flavor violation would be a clear indication of new physics beyond the Standard Model. We study the process $e^+e^-\to\tau\mu$ at tree-level in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory both on the $Z$-pole and at higher center-of-mass energies. We show that the constraints derived from the future circular $e^+e^-$ colliders FCC-ee and CEPC, are complementary to those obtained from low-energy tau decays at BaBar and Belle, as well as projections from Belle-II.

A Robust Search for Lepton Flavour Violating Axions at Mu3e

Abstract:We propose a search at Mu3e for lepton flavor violating axion(-like) particles in $\mu\to 3e + a$ decays. By requiring an additional $e^+e^-$ pair from internal conversion, one can circumvent the calibration challenges which plague the $\mu \to e+a$ channel for axions lighter than 20 MeV. Crucially, the corresponding reduction in signal rate is to a large extent compensated for by Mu3e's ability to resolve highly collimated tracks. For phase I of Mu3e, we project a sensitivity to decay constants as high as $6\times 10^9$ GeV which probes uncharted parameter space in scenarios of axion dark matter. The sensitivity to axions which couple primarily to right-handed leptons can be further improved by leveraging the polarisation of the muon beam.

Abstract:New mu-to-e conversion searches aim to advance limits on charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) by four orders of magnitude. By considering P and CP selection rules and the structure of possible charge and current densities, we show that rates are governed by six nuclear responses. To generate a microscopic formulation of these responses, we construct in non-relativistic effective theory (NRET) the CLFV nucleon-level interaction, then embed it in a nucleus. We discuss previous work, noting the lack of a systematic treatment of the various small parameters. Because the momentum transfer is comparable to the inverse nuclear size, a full multipole expansion of the response functions is necessary, a daunting task with Coulomb-distorted electron partial waves. We perform such an expansion to high precision by introducing a simplifying local electron momentum, treating the full set of 16 NRET operators. Previous work has been limited to the simplest charge/spin operators, ignored Coulomb distortion (or alternatively truncated the partial wave expansion) and the nucleon velocity operator, which is responsible for three of the response functions. This generates inconsistencies in the treatment of small parameters. We obtain a "master formula" for mu-to-e conversion that properly treats all such effects and those of the muon velocity. We compute muon-to-electron conversion rates for a series of experimental targets, deriving bounds on the coefficients of the CLFV operators. We discuss the nuclear physics: two types of coherence enhance certain CLFV operators and selection rules blind elastic mu-to-e conversion to others. We discuss the matching of the NRET onto higher level EFTs, and the relation to mu-to-e conversion to other CLFV tests. Finally we describe a publicly available script that can be used to compute mu-to-e conversion rates in nuclear targets.
