Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:The synthesis of ultrafine, uniform, well-dispersed functional nanoparticles (NPs) under mild conditions in a controlled manner remains a great challenge. In biological systems, a well-defined biomineralization process is exploited, in which the control over NPs' size, shape and distribution is temporally and spatially regulated by a variety of biomolecules in a confined space. Inspired by this, we embedded proteins into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and explored a novel approach to synthesize metallic NPs by taking the synergy of protein-induced biomineralization process and space-confined effect of MOFs. The generation and growth of ultrafine metal NPs (Ag or Au) was induced by the entrapped lysozyme molecules and confined by the ZIF-8 pores. Due to the narrow size distribution and homogeneous spatial distribution of metal NPs, the as-synthesized NPs exhibit remarkably elevated catalytic activity. These findings demonstrate that MOFs can be loaded with specific proteins to selectively deposit inorganic NPs via biomimetic mineralization and these novel kinds of nanohybrid materials may find applications in catalysis, sensing and optics.

Abstract:A double solvent replacement method was employed for the synthesis of novel hybrid nanoflowers from boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) and the metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-53 in aqueous solutions under hydrothermal treatments. The strong binding ability of aluminum ions onto the surface of BNNSs determines the 3D flowerlike architectures of the BNNSs/MOFs hybrid, and the BNNSs act as a structure-directing template. The BNNSs/MOFs showed an enhanced catalytic activity in the acetalization of benzaldehyde with methanol owing to the facilitated diffusion process in the hierarchical architectures.

Abstract:The rational design of metal non-oxides is important for their catalytic application, which is however limited by the fact that the current synthetic strategies are short of effective control over formation reactions. Recently, the hybrids evenly integrating organic with inorganic molecules on a nanoscale significantly provided quasi-homogeneous reactions towards well-defined nanocatalysts of metal non-oxides, in which their structures and properties can be modulated in a wide range. Focusing on the nanostructures and the related catalytic behaviors, this feature article seeks to provide some control on the key structures and properties of metal non-oxides (e.g. carbides, nitrides, sulfides and selenides). It is thus anticipated to shed some light on the development of emerging materials for efficient catalysis, especially those used in energy utilization.

Abstract:<p>Nature is abundant with multi-functional and efficient catalysts such as redox enzymes which scientists wish to emulate with synthetic catalysts. One approach is to tune molecular catalysts through metal-organic ligands but there are grand challenges of molecular catalysts for real applications in energy field. Here we demonstrate a robust inorganic construct based on metal-metal oxide-carbon triple junction nanostructures (ZrO<sub>2</sub>/Pd/carbon) that mimics the functions of enzymes for highly efficient proton transport. The metal oxide tunes the local acidic environment of the metal and improves its ability for proton transport, efficient adsorption of substrate, and accelerated electron transfer. Using electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of benzaldehyde as a model reaction, we show that the intrinsic activity of the metal toward hydrogenation reaction is improved by over 200% on the triple junction nanostructured catalysts. This study demonstrates the potential of rational design of multicomponent nanostructured catalysts to achieve enzyme like properties in synthetic catalysts.</p>

Abstract:The development of novel processes for the preparation of precious metal-based supported catalysts with good catalytic activity and stability has long been a focus of catalytic research. Herein, we propose a novel and facile biosynthetic method to fabricate Ag/Fe 3 O 4 heterostructures at room temperature by employing magnetosome (Fe 3 O 4 @ magnetosome membrane) derived from magnetotactic bacteria as "microreactors". Ag nanoparticles with a uniform particle size distribution of about 10 nm in diameter can be grown at the interface of Fe 3 O 4 and magnetosome membrane in just a few minutes without any additives. Owing to the spatial domain-limiting effect of the magnetosome membrane, the surface of Ag nanoparticles is enriched with various defects (such as: twin crystal, lattice distortion and various types of point defects) and has a strong interfacial interaction with the Fe 3 O 4 . Accordingly, the Ag/Fe 3 O 4 heterostructure presents excellent catalytic activity and good high-temperature stability for CO oxidation. For the reduction of p-nitrophenol by NaBH 4 , the Ag/Fe 3 O 4 heterostructure also exhibits favorable activity and recovery stability. Our work provides a fresh and green pathway for the preparation of high-performance catalysts.
Facile Fabrication of Hierarchical MOF-Metal Nanoparticle Tandem Catalysts for the Synthesis of Bioactive Molecules.

Abstract:Multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that possess permanent porosity are promising catalysts in organic transformation. Herein, we report the construction of a hierarchical MOF functionalized with basic aliphatic amine groups and polyvinylpyrrolidone-capped platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs). The post-synthetic covalent modification of organic ligands increases basic site density in the MOF, and simultaneously introduce mesopores to create a hierarchically porous structure. The multifunctional MOF is capable of catalyzing a sequential Knoevenagel condensation-hydrogenation-intramolecular cyclization reaction. The unique selective reduction of nitro group to intermediate hydroxylamine by Pt NPs supported on MOF, followed by intramolecular cyclization with cyano group to afford an excellent yield (up to 92%) to the uncommon quinoline N-oxides over quinolines. The hierarchical MOF and polyvinylpyrrolidone capping agent on Pt NPs synergistically facilitate the enrichment of substrates, and thus lead to high activity in the reduction-intramolecular cyclization reaction. The bioactivity assay indicates that the synthesized quinoline N-oxides evidently inhibit the proliferation of lung cancer cells. Our findings demonstrated the feasibility of MOF-catalyzed direct synthesis of bioactive molecules from readily available compounds under mild conditions.

Abstract:The fixation of metal nanoparticles into zeolite crystals has emerged as a new series of heterogeneous catalysts, giving performances that steadily outperform the generally supported catalysts in many important reactions. In this outlook, we define different noble metal-in-zeolite structures (metal@zeolite) according to the size of the nanoparticles and their relative location to the micropores. The metal species within the micropores and those larger than the micropores are denoted as encapsulated and fixed structures, respectively. The development in the strategies for the construction of metal@zeolite hybrid materials is briefly summarized in this work, where the rational preparation and improved thermal stability of the metal nanostructures are particularly mentioned. More importantly, these metal@zeolite hybrid materials as catalysts exhibit excellent shape selectivity. Finally, we review the current challenges and future perspectives for these metal@zeolite catalysts.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold great promise as porous matrixes for the incorporation of Au nanoparticles (NPs) because of their rationally designed framework structures. Unfortunately, the as-synthesized bulk MOFs usually vary in the range of micrometer or sub-micrometer size, rendering extremely longer molecular diffusion distance of chemical species. 2D MOF nanosheets with extended lateral dimensions and nanometer thickness are expected to implement fast kinetics and effectively lower mass-transfer barriers during embedding Au NPs process and sequential catalytic reactions. In this study, a novel 2D nanosheet of mixed-ligand Ni(II) MOF (referred to NMOF-Ni) is successfully fabricated. With the merits of well-defined micropores and functional oxygen-decorated inner walls, the incorporation of quite monodisperse ultrasmall Au nanoparticles of around 1 nm into NMOF-Ni has been achieved for the first time. The resulting nanocomposites exhibit remarkable catalytic performance and good size selectivity toward aqueous reduction reactions of nitrophenol, taking advantage of ultrasmall Au and 2D nanosheet nature, as well as the intact microporosity of host matrix. The present encouraging findings might shed light on new ways to develop high-performance heterogeneous catalysts by using of 2D MOF nanosheets with functional cavities as hosts for homogeneous distribution of ultrasmall Au NPs.

Abstract:Rational hybridization of two-dimensional (2D) nano materials with extrinsic species has shown great promise for a wide range of applications. To date, rational design and engineering of heterostructures based on 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been rather limited. Herein, we report an efficient strategy to construct noble metal/2D MOF heterostructures, featuring the utilization of surface oxygen sites from uncoordinated MOF ligands. The incorporation of highly dispersed noble metal nanoparticles (e.g., Pt and Pd) with modulated electronic structure is enabled on a surfactant-free MOF surface. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the 2D Ni-MOF@Pt hybrid with well-defined interfaces is applied to boost the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and delivers decent electrocatalytic activity under both acidic and alkaline conditions. The present results are expected to provide new insights into furnishing MOFs with extended functionalities and applications.

Abstract:The precise control of the size, morphology, surface chemistry, and assembly process of each component is important to construction of integrated functional nanocomposites. We report here the fabrication of multifunctional microspheres which possess a core of nonporous silica-protected magnetite particles, transition layer of active gold nanoparticles, and an outer shell of ordered mesoporous silica with perpendicularly aligned pore channels. The well-designed microspheres have high magnetization (18.6 emu/g), large surface area (236 m(2)/g), highly open mesopores (approximately 2.2 nm), and stably confined but accessible Au nanoparticles and, as a result, show high performance in catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (with conversion of 95% in 12 min), styrene epoxidation with high conversion (72%) and selectivity (80%), especially convenient magnetic separability, long life and good reusability. The unique nanostructure makes the microsphere to be a novel stable and approachable catalyst system for various catalytic industry processes.

Abstract:We report a "one-pot" method for the direct synthesis of an organosilica shell/silica core nanoreactor confined with ultra-small metal (Au, Pd, and Ru) nanoparticles. The nano-reactor confined with Au nanoparticles showed high activity towards styrene oxidation using O2 as the oxidant under 1 atm pressure and could be stably recycled without deterioration of both conversion and selectivity. The strategy could be adapted onto other nanostructures with little modification to obtain yolk-shell nanoreactors for catalysis application.

Abstract:A facile, efficient, and general strategy is developed for the fabrication of a new class of nanohybrids consisting of nitrogen-doped graphene functionalized with metal nitride nanoparticles. The graphene decorated with titanium nitride nanoparticles is explored for multifunctional electrocatalytic applications, i.e., as a low-cost counter electrode for I(3)(-) reduction in dye-sensitized solar cells and for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) oxidation in dehydrogenase enzyme-based biosensors.

Abstract:The preparation and stabilization of nanoparticles are becoming very crucial issues in the field of so-called "nanocatalysis". Recent developments in supramolecular self-assembled porous materials have opened a new way to get nanoparticles hosted in the channels of such materials. In this paper, a new approach towards monodisperse and thermally stable metal nanoparticles by confining them in ordered mesoporous materials is presented, and three aspects are illustrated. Firstly, the recent progress in the functional control of mesoporous materials will be briefly introduced, and the rational tuning of the textures, pore size, and pore length is demonstrated by controlling supramolecular self-assembly behavior. A novel synthesis of short-pore mesoporous materials is emphasized for their easy mass transfer in both biomolecule absorption and the facile assembly of metal nanocomposites within their pore channels. In the second part, the different routes for encapsulating monodisperse nanoparticles inside channels of porous materials are discussed, which mainly includes the ion-exchange/conventional incipient wetness impregnation, in situ encapsulation routes, organometallic methodologies, and surface functionalization schemes. A facile in situ autoreduction route is highlighted to get monodisperse metal nanoparticles with tunable sizes inside the channels of mesoporous silica. Finally, confinement of mesoporous materials is demonstrated to improve the thermal stability of monodisperse metal nanoparticles catalysts and a special emphasis will be focused on the stabilization of the metal nanoparticles with a low Tammann temperature. Several catalytic reactions concerning the catalysis of nanoparticles will be presented. These uniform nanochannels, which confine monodisperse and stable metal nanoparticles catalysts, are of great importance in the exploration of size-dependent catalytic chemistry and further understanding the nature of catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Carbon supported bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) hold great potential in developing high-performance catalyst and adsorbent. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy including a conventional hydrothermal method, Ni2+ mediated dopamine polymerization and postcalcination treatment for the synthesis of C-CoNi/Al2O3 bimetallic composites. Remarkably, high annealing treatment favors the construction of sandwich-like nanostructures and the formation of outer bimetallic CoNi NPs. The sheet-like nanostructures with magnetic properties of CoNi NPs possess a relatively large surface area and can be easily collected and recovered from reaction solution with an external magnet. Benefiting from compositional and sheets-like structural advantages, these C-CoNi/Al2O3 nanosheets manifest the better catalytic and adsorption properties toward 4-NP reduction and Histidine-rich protein adsorption compared with other Co-based composites such as Co/Al2O3, C-Co/Al2O3. Such an effective strategy could be extended to large-scale synthesis of uniform and stable multi-metallic composites.

Abstract:The ability to conduct the self-assembly of nanometer-scale building blocks is the core issue in achieving "bottom-up" fabrications of desired superstructures. However, the general fabrication strategy of a superstructure at an ultrathin nanoscale is not yet fully developed. Herein, we report a facile synthesis route for 3d transition metal layered double hydroxide (LDH) based laminar superstructuresviaa concise hydrothermal process. The LDH laminar superstructures are further decorated by noble metal clusters to form a new kind of 2-dimensional nanoreactor, which presents outstanding catalytic performance under mild conditions. It is suggested that dodecyl sulfate anions play a key role in the self-assembly of well-defined laminar superstructures, which provide a confinement effect and enhance the activity and selectivity of the catalytic process. The fabrication of an as-prepared nanoreactor reveals a new strategy to tailor the performance of catalysts with high selectivity.
