Abstract:Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional allotrope of carbon with excellent chemical, mechanical, and electronic properties. Recent studies have revealed that using graphene or modified graphene as a catalyst support or metal-free catalyst can result in significant improvement in the catalytic activity, selectivity, reusability and tolerance due to the unique structure of graphene. This review summarized the recent progress on the pre-paration of the graphene-based catalysts and their application in traditional chemical reactions, electrochemical reactions and photochemical catalysis. The perspectives of achieving graphene-based catalysts with high catalytic performance have also been included.

Abstract:<p>Metal-organic framework nanosheets (MONs) as the emerging materials have been attracting great interest because the nanosheets possess a range of fascinating attributes including high surface areas and sufficient accessible active sites, and their nanoscale thicknesses are favorable for mass diffusion and transfer of substrates and products with respect to bulk metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This review first summarizes the synthetic methods of various MONs from top-down and bottom-up methods as well as their diverse composites with different components. Then, the catalytic applications of MON based nanocatalysts are discussed and the relationships among the composition, structure and catalytic performances are revealed. Finally, the challenges and future outlook about the synthesis of diverse MONs and their composites for heterogeneous catalysis are prospected.</p>

Graphene Nanosheets Decorated with Pd, Pt, Au, and Ag Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalysis Applications

Abstract:We report that noble metal nanopartcles (Pd, Pt, Au, and Ag) decorated-graphene nanosheets can be synthesized with the template of graphene oxide by a one-pot solution-based method. The resulting hybrid materials are characterized by transmission electronic microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy, which demonstrate that the metal nanoparticles have been uniformly deposited on the surfaces of graphene nanosheets. Our results in turn verify that the carboxylic groups of graphene oxide are statistically distributed on its whole sheet surface rather than just at its edges. The graphene-metal nanohybrids can be used as catalysts in the reduction of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) with NaBH4 in aqueous solution. Our results suggest that graphene is a superior substrate to support metals for applications in the heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Graphene, a two‐dimensional material, presents unprecedented opportunities for catalytic applications, attributable to its unique planar structure, outstanding optical transmittance, superior electronic conductivity and mobility, extensive specific surface area, and elevated chemical stability, coupled with its tunability. In recent years, graphene‐based catalysts have garnered significant research attention and interest. This review aims to elucidate recent advancements in the synthesis of graphene‐based catalysts. It encompasses discussions on heteroatom‐doped metal‐free graphene catalysts, graphene composite catalysts (including graphene/metal and graphene/metal oxide composites), and their applications in various catalytic domains such as electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and catalysis of organic reactions.

Abstract:Carbon nanofillers in general and graphene in particular are considered as promising potential candidates in catalysis due to their two-dimensional (2D) nature, zero bandwidth, single atom thickness with a promising high surface area: volume ratio. Additionally, graphene oxide via result of tunable electrical properties has also been developed as a catalytic support for metal and metal oxide nanofillers. Moreover, the possession of higher chemical stability followed by ultrahigh thermal conductivity plays a prominent role in promoting higher reinforcement of catalytically active sites. In this review we have started with an overview of carbon nanofillers as catalyst support, their main characteristics and applications for their use in heterogeneous catalysis. The review article also critically focusses on the catalytic properties originating from both functional groups as well as doping. An in-depth literature on the various reaction catalysed by metal oxide based nanoparticles supported on GO/rGO has also been incorporated with a special focus on the overall catalytic efficiency with respect to graphene contribution. The future research prospective in the aforementioned field has also been discussed.

Abstract:Benefiting from the large specific surface area, outstanding electronic, optical, thermal and mechanical properties of graphene, as well as the exceptional electronic band structure and good physicochemical stability of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), graphene/g-C3N4 hybrids present great potential in electrochemical and photochemical catalysis. In this review, we summarize recent research advances in synthesizing graphene/g-C3N4 hybrid-based catalysts, and their applications in energy conversion, environmental decontamination, and other fields. The current limitations and some future trends of graphene/g-C3N4 hybrid-based nanomaterials as advanced catalysts are also discussed.

Graphene is a two-dimensional material consisting of a single atomic layer formed by the hybridization of the s and p orbitals of carbon atoms. It exhibits stable physical and chemical properties and has an easily controllable structure, making it an ideal carrier for MNCs. When metal nanoclusters (MNCs) are loaded on a graphene substrate, the MNCs can form a stable binding site on the graphene substrate. Furthermore, the construction of a defective structure on the graphene substrate enables the formation of robust interactions between the metal atoms of the MNCs and the substrate, facilitating the rapid establishment of electron conduction pathways and markedly enhancing the electrocatalytic performance. This paper presents a review of the applications of metal nanoclusters supported on graphene skeletons in the field of the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Firstly, we briefly introduce the reaction mechanism of the CO2RR, then we systematically discuss the synthesis strategies, properties and applications of metal nanoclusters in electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction from both experimental and theoretical perspectives, and lastly, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of metal nanocluster catalysts supported on carbon materials.

Abstract:A facile, efficient, and general strategy is developed for the fabrication of a new class of nanohybrids consisting of nitrogen-doped graphene functionalized with metal nitride nanoparticles. The graphene decorated with titanium nitride nanoparticles is explored for multifunctional electrocatalytic applications, i.e., as a low-cost counter electrode for I(3)(-) reduction in dye-sensitized solar cells and for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) oxidation in dehydrogenase enzyme-based biosensors.

Abstract:Graphene (GN) is an emerging carbon material that may soon find practical applications. With its unusual properties, GN is an ideal platform for constructing a series of GN-based functional nanomaterials. Among them, GN/noble metal hybrids become one of the families of composite materials with extraordinary properties by combining the advantages of noble metal nanostructures and GN. The recent progress in the synthesis of GN/noble metal hybrids is presented first, such as in situ solution based methods, electrochemical deposition methods, self-assembly and other methods. Then, the applications of these novel GN/noble metal hybrids in fuel cells are summarized and discussed. Future research trends and challenges of design and synthesis of GN/noble metal hybrids are proposed.

Abstract:The rational design of metal non-oxides is important for their catalytic application, which is however limited by the fact that the current synthetic strategies are short of effective control over formation reactions. Recently, the hybrids evenly integrating organic with inorganic molecules on a nanoscale significantly provided quasi-homogeneous reactions towards well-defined nanocatalysts of metal non-oxides, in which their structures and properties can be modulated in a wide range. Focusing on the nanostructures and the related catalytic behaviors, this feature article seeks to provide some control on the key structures and properties of metal non-oxides (e.g. carbides, nitrides, sulfides and selenides). It is thus anticipated to shed some light on the development of emerging materials for efficient catalysis, especially those used in energy utilization.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenation of nitroarenes is a type of important reaction to get corresponding amines, the development of catalysts with outstanding catalytic performance is in urgent need. In this review, we summarize the breakthroughs in the development of supported metal catalysts in the past few decades, including the use of different metals and supports, improved metal utilization efficiency, adjustment of the structure, and the interaction. We focus on how to develop and innovate the structure of the catalyst, aiming at the contradiction between conversion and selectivity in selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes, from the perspective of the structure and the interaction to construct a kind of catalyst with low noble metal loading and high activity, stabilize the active components, and design and fabricate hybrid nanostructured catalysts with desired activity and selectivity. The development process and the catalytic performance of metal‐2D semiconductor hybrid nano‐structure catalyst are also discussed and provide a theoretical and practical basis for the precise design of supported metal catalysts.

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles (NPs) supported on porous materials have shown great advantages in many catalytic application fields. Supported metal NPs are receiving extensive attention due to their significant contribution in a wide range of current and future applications, and this is arguably one of the fastest growing research fields. In this review, we highlight various types of metal catalysts that possess great potential in several catalytic reactions. The major focus has been on metal oxides, nanoporous metals and metal NPs supported on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and zeolites. Special attention has been given to the synthesis strategies and application of the NPs supported on MOFs and zeolites, which are considered highly interesting and rapidly expanding areas in heterogeneous catalysis. Finally, the prospects of these catalysts have been included in the concluding remarks.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Famous as emerging inorganic-organic hybrid materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based composites have been displaying bright prospects in catalysis fields. It is desirable to develop highly efficient MOF-based catalysts with excellent activity, selectivity, and stability. The nanostructure of MOFs can bring dramatic effects on their inherent physical/chemical properties and the interaction with reaction substrates/intermediates. Therefore, it is applicable to promote the performance of MOF-based catalysts via nanostructure engineering. In this review, we focus on four classes of nanostructures, i.e., ultrathin nanostructure, hierarchically porous nanostructure, defective nanostructure, and MOF-shelled nanostructure (composite with MOF shell). Strategies for nanostructure engineering of MOF-based catalysts are summarized, their applications in thermo-catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis are overviewed, and the effects of nanostructure engineering on catalytic performance are discussed. We hope this review will be instructive for researchers in the rational and controllable construction of MOF nanostructures for catalytic performance promotions.

Abstract:Nanoparticle/metal-organic frameworks (MOF) based composites have recently attracted significant attention as a new class of catalysts. Such composites possess the unique features of MOFs (including clearly defined crystal structure, high surface area, single site catalyst, special confined nanopore, tunable, and uniform pore structure), but avoid some intrinsic weaknesses (like limited electrical conductivity and lack in the "conventional" catalytically active sites). This review summarizes the developed strategies for the fabrication of nanoparticle/MOF composites for catalyst uses, including the strategy using MOFs as host materials to hold and stabilize the guest nanoparticles, the strategy with subsequent MOF growth/assembly around pre-synthesized nanoparticles and the strategy mixing the precursors of NPs and MOFs together, followed by self-assembly process or post-treatment or post-modification. The applications of nanoparticle/MOF composites for CO oxidation, CO₂ conversion, hydrogen production, organic transformations, and degradation of pollutants have been discussed. Superior catalytic performances in these reactions have been demonstrated. Challenges and future developments are finally addressed.

Abstract:Metal species with different size (single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) show different catalytic behavior for various heterogeneous catalytic reactions. It has been shown in the literature that many factors including the particle size, shape, chemical composition, metal-support interaction, and metal-reactant/solvent interaction can have significant influences on the catalytic properties of metal catalysts. The recent developments of well-controlled synthesis methodologies and advanced characterization tools allow one to correlate the relationships at the molecular level. In this Review, the electronic and geometric structures of single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles will be discussed. Furthermore, we will summarize the catalytic applications of single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles for different types of reactions, including CO oxidation, selective oxidation, selective hydrogenation, organic reactions, electrocatalytic, and photocatalytic reactions. We will compare the results obtained from different systems and try to give a picture on how different types of metal species work in different reactions and give perspectives on the future directions toward better understanding of the catalytic behavior of different metal entities (single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) in a unifying manner.

Abstract:This review discusses the synthesis, characterization, catalytic applications, mechanisms, current advances, challenges, and environmental consequences of Graphene oxide-based ferrite nanocomposites. The synthesis described the strategies used to synthesize these nanocomposites. The structural characterization was discussed using XRD, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy techniques and how it could learn about their chemical composition and bonding. Morphological characterization said the results obtained on the nanostructure of these nanocomposites. The catalytic application phase is concerned with their use in photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and magnetic catalysis, as well as the synergistic impact and the extra suitable electron switch pathways. The assessment also highlighted emerging developments in synthesis, novel catalytic applications, and capacity applications. The challenges and destiny directions discussed the importance of particular synthesis, management, balance, enhancement, and scalability. Compared to the sustainability, economic viability, and ecological effect, the environmental and monetary issues section underlined the significance of environmentally pleasant manufacturing and massive-scale viability.

Abstract:Exploring highly active and low-cost electrocatalysts is essential to the development of sustainable and efficient energy conversion technologies. 2D nanomaterials with unique electronic structure and physicochemical properties have great potential in constructing advanced electrocatalysts. 2D carbonaceous graphene and its analogs (e.g., reduced graphite oxide, carbon nanosheets) have been extensively studied in this field, while there recently has been considerable attention focusing on other 2D metal-free nanomaterials (e.g., g-C3N4, h-BN). Here, the recent advances of 2D metal-free nanomaterials beyond graphene and its analogs toward a wide range of electrocatalysis applications are reviewed. The strategies for constructing advanced 2D metal-free nanomaterial-based electrocatalysts are discussed in terms of surface engineering and interface engineering. Finally, perspectives on the challenges and future directions of these unique material systems in the electrocatalysis area are provided.
