Abstract:Famous as emerging inorganic-organic hybrid materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based composites have been displaying bright prospects in catalysis fields. It is desirable to develop highly efficient MOF-based catalysts with excellent activity, selectivity, and stability. The nanostructure of MOFs can bring dramatic effects on their inherent physical/chemical properties and the interaction with reaction substrates/intermediates. Therefore, it is applicable to promote the performance of MOF-based catalysts via nanostructure engineering. In this review, we focus on four classes of nanostructures, i.e., ultrathin nanostructure, hierarchically porous nanostructure, defective nanostructure, and MOF-shelled nanostructure (composite with MOF shell). Strategies for nanostructure engineering of MOF-based catalysts are summarized, their applications in thermo-catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis are overviewed, and the effects of nanostructure engineering on catalytic performance are discussed. We hope this review will be instructive for researchers in the rational and controllable construction of MOF nanostructures for catalytic performance promotions.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are constructed by periodically alternate metal ions with organic ligands, which offer structural diversity and a wide range of interesting properties as an attractive classification of crystalline porous materials. Integration of MOFs with other size-limited functional centers can supply new multifunctional composites, which exhibit both the properties of the components and new characteristics due to the combination of MOFs with the selected loadings. In recent years, integration of metal/metal oxide nanoparticles (MNPs) into MOFs to form the composite catalysts has attracted considerable attention due to the superior performance. In this review, the latest studies and up-to-date developments on the design and synthetic strategy of new MNP@MOF composite catalysts are specifically highlighted. Both the achievements and problems are evaluated and proposed, and the opportunities and challenges of MNP@MOF composite catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are one set of the most excellent supports for Pd nanoparticles (NPs). MOFs as the host mainly have the following advantages: (i) they provide size limits for highly dispersed Pd NPs; (ii) fixing Pd NPs is beneficial for separation and reuse, avoiding the loss of expensive metals; (iii) the MOFs skeleton is diversified and functionalized, which is beneficial to enhancing the interaction with Pd NPs and prolonging the service life of the catalyst. This review discusses the synthesis strategy of Pd@MOF, which provides guidance for the synthesis of similar materials. After that, the research advance of Pd@MOF in heterogeneous catalysis is comprehensively summarized, including C-C coupling reaction, benzyl alcohol oxidation reaction, simple olefin hydrogenation reaction, nitroaromatic compound reduction, tandem reaction, and the photocatalysis, with the emphasis in providing a comparison with the performance of other alternative Pd-containing catalysts. In the final section, this review presents the current challenges and which are the next goals in this field.
Flexible and Hierarchical Metal–Organic Framework Composites for High‐Performance Catalysis

Abstract:The development of porous composite materials is of great significance for their potentially improved performance over those of individual components and extensive applications in separation, energy storage, and heterogeneous catalysis. Now mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with macroporous melamine foam (MF) have been integrated using a one-pot process, generating a series of MOF/MF composite materials with preserved crystallinity, hierarchical porosity, and increased stability over that of melamine foam. The MOF nanocrystals were threaded by the melamine foam networks, resembling a ball-and-stick model overall. The resulting MOF/MF composite materials were employed as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the epoxidation of cholesteryl esters. Combining the advantages of interpenetrative mesoporous and macroporous structures, the MOF/melamine foam composite has higher dispersibility and more accessibility of catalytic sites, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:Combining metal nanoclusters (NCs) with functional supports provides excellent potential for exploring the host–guest interactions and rational design of highly active NC-based catalysts, while metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently shown unprecedented prospects for NC immobilization. Unlike other common supports, MOFs possess accurate and tunable framework structures that can be easily modified with various functional groups and serve as the perfect platform for optimizing the activity of immobilized NCs. With a further understanding of the NC–MOF interactions, the NC/MOF nanocomposites can be precisely designed to meet the specific requirements for efficient catalysis. In this review, the synthesis strategies of NC/MOF nanocomposites are first introduced. We have mainly focused on summarizing the enhanced activity of NC/MOF nanocomposites, along with the specific reasons for such increased activity. The improved catalytic activity of composites has been classified and discussed in detail (MOF-endowed protection and selectivity, MOF-assisted ligand engineering, MOF-promoted reactant enrichment, MOF-involved synergistic effect, and MOF-regulated microenvironment). Finally, the barriers and the possible future perspectives in this field are proposed, which are anticipated to provide some new insights into designing smart NC/MOF nanocomposites with elevated catalytic efficiency.

Abstract:This review provides an update on the rational integration of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal active species and their synergistic cooperations in specific electrocatalysis, including the integration of metal nanostructures via surface anchoring, space confining, and MOF coating, as well as the integration of atomically dispersed metal sites either with the metal nodes/linkers or within the pores of MOFs. Electrocatalysis is a highly promising technology widely used in clean energy conversion. There is a continuing need to develop advanced electrocatalysts to catalyze the critical electrochemical reactions. Integrating metal active species, including various metal nanostructures (NSs) and atomically dispersed metal sites (ADMSs), into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) leads to the formation of promising heterogeneous electrocatalysts that take advantage of both components. Among them, MOFs can provide support and protection for the active sites on guest metals, and the resulting host‐guest interactions can synergistically enhance the electrocatalytic performance. In this review, three key concerns on MOF‐metal heterogeneous electrocatalysts regarding the catalytic sites, conductivity, and catalytic stability are first presented. Then, rational integration strategies of MOFs and metals, including the integration of metal NSs via surface anchoring, space confining, and MOF coating, as well as the integration of ADMSs either with the metal nodes/linkers or within the pores of MOFs, along with their recent progress on synergistic cooperation for specific electrochemical reactions are summarized. Finally, current challenges and possible solutions in applying these increasingly concerned electrocatalysts are also provided.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new stable class of hybrid materials synthesized, regulated and decorated by rational incorporating organic bridging ligands and metal ions with well-defined coordination geometry have become promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis in industrial applications. Compared with homogeneous catalysts, MOF catalysts can be easily recycled and reused for several times; while compared with traditional heterogeneous catalysts, they possess tunable size and catalytic centers via exchange or modification of their components. This review will sketch typical successful MOF-catalyzed reactions and summarize various catalytic centers, including the open metal sites, bifunctional acid-base sites in MOFs, as well as catalytic centers introduced to MOFs via PSM. The periodic order and site isolation of the catalytic struts in MOFs eliminate the multimolecular catalyst deactivation pathways to extend the catalytic centers' functional lifetime and facilitate the studies of their activities and reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, detailed discussion on how the catalytic centers play the roles in the catalytic reactions and how to control the activity and selectivity of them will be given via typical reported examples. Abstract:Zeolites, characterized by their highly porous structure, have become integral to modern industry and environmental science due to their broad applications in adsorption, separation, and catalysis. Recent advancements in zeolite synthesis, particularly through hydrothermal methods and the incorporation of metal nanoparticles, have significantly expanded their utility. This review delves into the innovative strategies for encapsulating metal nanoparticles within zeolite matrices, enhancing catalytic reactions' efficiency, selectivity, and durability. Challenges such as nanoparticle agglomeration and catalyst deactivation are addressed through hierarchical zeolite encapsulation, which provides a novel route for the development of multifunctional materials. By examining methods ranging from in situ encapsulation to post-synthetic recrystallization, this review highlights the versatility and potential of metal@zeolite catalysts in various applications, including organic synthesis, pollutant treatment, and energy conversion. The review underscores the importance of optimizing the interaction between metal nanoparticles and the zeolite framework to achieve superior catalytic performance, offering new directions for research in catalytic science and industrial process optimization.

Abstract:Heterometallic nanoparticles (NPs) have been emerging as a type of important catalyst. Bimetallic NPs with alloyed and core-shell structures have higher activities than monometallic counterparts in catalysis due to the synergistic effects between the two metals. Compared to the straightforward synthesis of bimetallic alloy NPs, the preparation strategies for bimetallic core-shell NPs are flexible and diversified. In addition, synergistic catalysis over trimetallic and multimetallic NPs has also received considerable interest in recent years. In this feature article, we provide an overview of the recent developments of heterometallic NPs for improved catalytic performance.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of distinctive porous crystalline materials constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers. Owing to their structural diversity, functional adjustability, and high surface area, different types of MOF-based single metal sites are well exploited, including coordinately unsaturated metal sites from metal nodes and metallolinkers, as well as active metal species immobilized to MOFs. Furthermore, controllable thermal transformation of MOFs can upgrade them to nanomaterials functionalized with active single-atom catalysts (SACs). These unique features of MOFs and their derivatives enable them to serve as a highly versatile platform for catalysis, which has actually been becoming a rapidly developing interdisciplinary research area. In this review, we overview the recent developments of catalysis at single metal sites in MOF-based materials with emphasis on their structures and applications for thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. We also compare the results and summarize the major insights gained from the works in this review, providing the challenges and prospects in this emerging field.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) supported metal nanoparticles (MNPs) (MNPs@MOFs) composites, as a class of effective functional materials, have been extensively explored because of the synergetic effect of MOFs and MNPs. Lots of synthesized methods are developed to synthesize MNPs@MOFs composites. These strategies can be generally divided into four main synthesis strategies: ship‐in‐the‐bottle, bottle‐around‐the‐ship, one‐pot, and sandwich assembly approaches. In this review, the recent synthesized strategies are discussed and summarized for the design and fabrication of different MNPs@MOFs composites. Then, the catalytic applications of some MNPs@MOFs composites are presented. Lastly, the challenges and future perspectives are also pointed out in this hot research filed.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (H-MOFs) with micro-, meso- and macropores have emerged as a popular class of crystalline porous materials that have attracted extensive interests, and they have been studied in diverse applications, especially in heterogeneous catalysis. The hierarchical structures enable sufficient diffusion and accessibility to the active sites of the molecules and permit the encapsulation of catalytic guest molecules to exploit more possibilities with enhanced catalytic performance. In this review, we have summarized the recent representative developments of H-MOFs in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, which includes oxidation reaction, hydrogenation reaction, and condensation reaction. Emphasis is placed on the multiple functions of hierarchical structures, and the catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, recyclability, etc. of the industrial utility of H-MOFs. Finally, the prospects and challenges of H-MOFs in heterogeneous catalysis and the remaining issues in this field are presented.

Abstract:For the first time, this work presents Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) immobilized on a metal- organic framework (MOF) by a sequential deposition- reduction method. The small-size Au@Ag NPs reveal the restriction effects of the pore/surface structure in the MOF. The modulation of the Au/Ag ratio can tune the composition and a reversed Au/Ag deposition sequence changes the structure of Au-Ag NPs, while a posttreatment process transforms the core-shell NPs to a AuAg alloy. Catalytic studies show a strong bimetallic synergistic effect of core shell structured Au@Ag NPs, which have much higher catalytic activities than alloy and monometallic NPs.

Abstract:Noble metal catalysts excel in many applications due to their high chemical stability and unique plasmonic and catalytic properties. However, noble metals in the form of nanoparticles tend to aggregate easily and have high costs, which limit their actual applications. Developing catalysts with minimal noble metal usage and optimal activity is urgently needed. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are composed of organic ligands and metal ions/clusters via coordination bonds, which inherently possess structural diversity, high specific surface area, and other important properties. With the rapid development of MOFs and MOF-based composite materials, they have been used to design and synthesize nanostructures and nanomaterials with high catalytic activity. The preparation, characterization, and application of MOF-based composite materials combining noble metals have attracted significant interest. Incorporation of noble metal nanoparticles into MOF structures is an effective method to eliminate the agglomeration problems of noble metals and the instability of MOFs. By utilization of the synergistic effects and properties of metal nanoparticles and MOFs, composite materials exhibit enhanced catalytic performance over each component. This review focuses on the synthesis strategies and catalytic performance studies of noble metal catalysts supported on MOFs.

Abstract:The unique characteristics of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Covalent-Organic Frameworks (COFs), such as structural tunability, high specific surface area, and highly organized pores, have led to their widespread applicationin catalysis. Notably, it is possible to significantly enhance the catalytic characteristics of MOFs or COFs byelaborately integrating them togther to overcome the flaws in individual MOFs and COFs, which has been receiving more and more attention. This review starts with a brief overview of the current development of MOF/COF-based catalyst and relative synthetic approaches, followed by a comprehensive and systematic analysis of their applications in photocatalysis, thermocatalysis and electrocatalysis, involving photocatalytic water splitting, photocatalytic redox reaction and photocatalytic degradation, conventional thermocatalytic redox reaction, , as well as electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction. After the above discussion, the prospects and challenges of MOF/COF composites are also proposed.

Abstract:Composites incorporating metal nanoparticles (MNPs) within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have broad applications in many fields. However, the controlled spatial distribution of the MNPs within MOFs remains a challenge for addressing key issues in catalysis, for example, the efficiency of catalysts due to the limitation of molecular diffusion within MOF channels. Here we report a facile strategy that enables MNPs to be encapsulated into MOFs with controllable spatial localization by using metal oxide both as support to load MNPs and as a sacrificial template to grow MOFs. This strategy is versatile to a variety of MNPs and MOF crystals. By localizing the encapsulated MNPs closer to the surface of MOFs, the resultant MNPs@MOF composites not only exhibit effective selectivity derived from MOF cavities, but also enhanced catalytic activity due to the spatial regulation of MNPs as close as possible to the MOF surface.

Abstract:<p>Metal-organic framework nanosheets (MONs) as the emerging materials have been attracting great interest because the nanosheets possess a range of fascinating attributes including high surface areas and sufficient accessible active sites, and their nanoscale thicknesses are favorable for mass diffusion and transfer of substrates and products with respect to bulk metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This review first summarizes the synthetic methods of various MONs from top-down and bottom-up methods as well as their diverse composites with different components. Then, the catalytic applications of MON based nanocatalysts are discussed and the relationships among the composition, structure and catalytic performances are revealed. Finally, the challenges and future outlook about the synthesis of diverse MONs and their composites for heterogeneous catalysis are prospected.</p>

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles, also called porous coordination polymers, are a major part of nanomaterials science, and their role in catalysis is becoming central. The extraordinary variability and richness of their structures afford engineering synergies between the metal nodes, functional linkers, encapsulated substrates, or nanoparticles for multiple and selective heterogeneous interactions and activations in these MOF-based nanocatalysts. Pyrolysis of MOF-nanoparticle composites forms highly porous N- or P-doped graphitized MOF-derived nanomaterials that are increasingly used as efficient catalysts especially in electro- and photocatalysis. This review first briefly summarizes this background of MOF nanoparticle catalysis and then comprehensively reviews the fast-growing literature reported during the last years. The major parts are catalysis of organic and molecular reactions, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and views of prospects. Major challenges of our society are addressed using these well-defined heterogeneous catalysts in the fields of synthesis, energy, and environment. In spite of the many achievements, enormous progress is still necessary to improve our understanding of the processes involved beyond the proof-of-concept, particularly for selective methane oxidation, hydrogen production, water splitting, CO<sub>2</sub> reduction to methanol, nitrogen fixation, and water depollution.
