Abstract:To obtain insight into the catalytic reaction mechanism of biodiesels over ZSM-5 zeolites, the pyrolysis and catalytic pyrolysis of methyl butanoate, a biodiesel surrogate, with H-type ZSM-5 (HZSM-5) were performed in a flow re-actor under atmospheric pressure. The pyrolysis products were identified and quantified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Kinetic modelling and experimental results revealed that H-atom abstraction in the gas phase was the primary pathway for methyl butanoate decomposition during pyrolysis, but dissociating to ketene and methanol over HZSM-5 was the primary pathway for methyl butanoate consumption during catalytic pyrolysis. The initial decomposition temperature of methyl butanoate was reduced by approximately 300 K over HZSM-5 compared to that for the uncatalyzed reaction. In addition, the apparent activation energies of methyl butanoate under catalytic pyrolysis and homogeneous pyrolysis conditions were obtained using the Arrhenius equation. The significantly reduced apparent activation energy confirmed the catalytic performance of HZSM-5 for methyl butanoate pyrolysis. The activation temperature may also affect some catalytic properties of HZSM-5. Overall, this study can be used to guide subsequent catalytic combustion for practical biodiesel fuels.
Abatement of n-Butane by Catalytic Combustion over Co-ZSM-5 Catalysts

Abstract:Catalytic combustion has become a promising technology to address the accelerating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. In this work, cobalt modified ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts (3-18 wt % Co) were prepared to investigate the combustion of n-butane (one typical model component of VOCs). The performances of catalysts were evaluated by conducting experiments in a flow tube reactor. XRD, BET, FT-IR, and XPS were also utilized to characterize their physicochemical properties. A significant enhancement of the catalytic activity was demonstrated in terms of the cobalt supported over ZSM-5, with an optimal cobalt loading of 7 wt %. The excellent catalytic activity of 7 wt % Co-ZSM-5 is mainly attributed to a higher concentration of active surface Co3+ species. Furthermore, DFT calculations indicated that the role of Co can enhance the activity by decreasing the activation barriers for C-H bond cleavage. In addition, the primary reaction mechanism of n-butane combustion on Co-ZSM-5 was also revealed.

Abstract:Despite thorough exploration of the acidity properties and pore structure effects of zeolite catalysts on catalytic conversion, a comprehensive understanding of how these factors influence reaction pathways is still lacking. Herein, three common zeolites (ZSM-5, ZSM-22 and ZSM-48) of different shapes and size dimensions were introduced into catalytic conversion of isobutane, with combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2 adsorption and desorption, solid-state 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR, ammonia temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) and pyridine adsorption infrared spectroscopy (Py-FTIR) to characterize their structure and acidity. And channels and topologies were associated with stability and catalytic activity. ZSM-5 performed best, showing the most active sites. Furthermore, ZSM-48 led to an increase in the propene yield by suppressing inhibitory secondary reactions in the monomolecular reaction pathway. Moreover, the amount of Brønsted acid sites (BASs) of ZSM-22 were a key factor in promoting light alkene formation. However, 1D channels contributed to the deactivation of ZSM-22 and ZSM-48. The detailed reaction pathways of zeolite catalysts with diverse pore structures and acidities are crucial for optimizing their catalytic performance.
Effects of post treatment of HZSM-5 zeolites on catalytic cracking of butene

Abstract:The structure and acidity of HZSM-5 zeolites were modified using different post treatment methods: alkaline treatment, steam treatment, and alkaline-steaming treatment. The catalytic performances of modified zeolites were tested in 1-butene catalytic cracking. Their physicochemical properties were characterized by N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and infrared spectroscopy with pyridine adsorption (Py-IR). The acidities of zeolites increased after the alkaline treatment, and as a result, the activity of butene cracking increased and the selectivity of propylene decreased. However, the deactivation rate of alkaline-treated zeolites had no significant change. There was a pronounced development of mesopores (5—20 nm) with a broad pore-size distribution in alkaline-treated ZSM-5 zeolites. Mesopores (2—4 nm) with a narrow distribution is observed after steaming treatment, while the mesopore volume is low. Zeolites after alkaline- and steaming-treatment showed two kinds of mesopore distributions, 2—4 nm (narrow) and 5—20 nm (broad). Due to the decrease of Br?nsted acidic sites, the selectivity of propylene increased over ZSM-5 zeolites with any of the post treatments; a relatively stable propylene yield was obtained after the reaction of 2.5 h (except for zeolites treated with high concentration of alkaline followed by steaming treatment).

Abstract:The catalytic chemistry of methyl acetate (MA) over zeolites was investigated theoretically at the M06-2X/6-311 + + G(d,p) level, and its chemical reaction rate constants were calculated by using the transition state theory. With particular interest in looking for feasible reactions of the protolytic cracking channels, the present study reveals that the ketene formation in the concerted mechanism and that of acetyloxy + CH3 are competitive reactions during MA consumption. Furthermore, comparisons between the catalytic and conventional pyrolysis of MA were carried out to demonstrate the benefits of introducing the catalysts to MA combustion. It is demonstrated that the energy barriers of the dissociation reactions for MA over H-ZSM-5 zeolites decrease significantly compared with the conventional pyrolysis of MA. Changes of production distributions were also observed between the catalytic pyrolysis and the conventional pyrolysis. The results also provides new insight into the mechanism of the MA catalytic pyrolysis that will guide the improvements in the engine combustion efficiency and in the control of volatile organic compounds, and will also help to improve the selectivity of the conversion of methanol to hydrocarbon and olefin products.
Catalytic combustion and kinetic characteristics of n-butanol with Pt/ZSM-5 particles in meso channel

Abstract:The catalytic reaction of n-butanol with Pt/ZSM-5 in a 4 mm quartz tube was experimentally analyzed.The effects of equivalence ratio and flow rate on the catalytic effect of butyl alcohol were compared and discussed.The combustion performance,including the conversation of n-butanol with temperature,product concentration,combustion efficiency,the apparent activation energy,was analyzed.The effect of flow rate on the catalytic combustion of butanol in the micro tube was small when the volume space velocity was less than 19080 h-1.Decrease of the equivalence ratio at a fixed flow rate yielded a higher catalytic performance toward the conversation of n-butanol,indicating that the adsorption of oxygen was the dominant factor for the reaction of n-butanol on the surface of Pt/ZSM-5.More intermediate products like acetaldehyde,dimethyl ether,carbon monoxide were detected when the equivalence ratio was 1;there was no carbon monoxide when the equivalence ratio was 0.3.Decrease of the equivalence ratio or the flow rate both yielded higher combustion efficiency.The apparent activation energy of the reaction of n-butanol with Pt/ZSM-5 was (110 ± 20) kJ/mol,and the apparent activation energy of the reaction was smaller at a low equivalence ratio or low flow rate.
Catalytic Cracking of 1-Butene to Propylene by Ag Modified HZSM-5

Abstract:Silver modified HZSM-5 (AgHZ) zeolite catalysts were prepared by ion exchange method and their catalytic properties in the 1-butene cracking reaction were measured. The catalysts were characterized by infrared spectroscopy with pyridine adsorption (Py-IR), N2 adsorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effects of Ag loading and steaming treatment on catalytic performances were studied. It is found that the activity of HZSM-5 (HZ) catalyst significantly decreases with the steaming time, whereas AgHZ catalysts show stable activity in the steaming time of 24–48 h and their activities increase with the Ag loading. When the steaming time is 24–48 h, the yield of propylene over HZ catalyst significantly decreases, whereas it is stable over AgHZ catalysts. The AgHZ catalysts with Ag loadings of 0.28%–0.43% (by mass) show similar propylene yields (~ 30%), which are higher than that over the AgHZ catalyst with a Ag loading of 0.55% (by mass). These results indicate that the steam-treated AgHZ catalysts with optimum Ag loadings have higher yield of propylene and are more stable than the steam-treated HZ catalyst. The regeneration stability measurement in butene cracking also shows that the AgHZ catalyst steam-treated under a suitable condition has better stability than the HZ catalyst.

Abstract:A kinetic study of n-butanol catalytic combustion over the Pt/ZSM-5 was performed in a fixed-bed combustor at ambient pressure and temperature range in 390-470 K. The Power Law model and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) model were constructed to characterize the n-butanol catalytic oxidation. The reaction orders of n-butanol and O-2 were -0.24 and 1, respectively. Five pathways rate expressions were selected to predict the reaction rate for L-H model. The sum of the squared differences between the experimental data and the fitted data indicated that surface reaction and oxygen adsorption were probably rate-determining steps. The reliability of the rate expressions was affirmed by comparing the experimental and the fitted rates.

Abstract:ZSM-5 has emerged as a promising catalyst for iso-butane catalytic cracking due to its unique pore structures and abundant acid sites. And the optimization of catalytic performance has attracted more and more attention. Herein, a series of Pt and Mn-embedded Pt-xMn@HZSM-5 catalysts with different Mn complexes were successfully synthesized via the one-pot hydrothermal method (x refers to the Mn/Pt ratio). The ligand effects of both ethylenediamine and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt on the nature of target samples in terms of crystallinity, porosity, morphology, metal state, and acidity, were investigated in detail. It has been demonstrated that ethylenediamine served as a ligand enabled Pt-xMn@HZSM-5 more metal nanoparticles and acid sites, thereby delivering improved catalytic performance and high yields of ethylene, propylene and BTX (benzene, toluene, and xylene) for iso-butane catalytic cracking.

Abstract:ZSM-5/ZSM-48 composite zeolite was synthesized via an one-pot method by using mixed templates of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and 1,6-hexamethylenediamine (HDA), and its catalytic performance was tested in methanol-to-olefin reaction (MTO), butene conversion and co-reaction of methanol with butene. The results show that the amount of added CTAB plays a vital role in the synthesis of ZSM-5/ZSM-48 composite zeolite. The increase in the amount of CTAB in the synthesis gels leads to an increase in the content of zeolite with MFI structure, a higher specific surface area, more Al atoms located at channel intersections and more acid sites than ZSM-48 synthesized by the conventional method with HDA as a template. The catalytic results show that ZSM-5/ZSM-48 composite zeolite gives much higher propene selectivity in MTO reaction, butene conversion and co-reaction compared with ZSM-5, ZSM-48 and their mechanical mixtures due to that the combined effect of catalyst acidity and pore structure promotes the olefin-based cycle and inhibits the aromatization and hydride transfer reactions.

Abstract:A comparative study on the effects of SiO2 modification and mesoporous structures on catalytic performances over ZSM-5 zeolites in MTA conversion both theoretically and experimentally was done. Experimental results showed that hierarchical pores increased the production of aromatics. However, DFT calculation proved that energy barriers for producing aromatics over mesoporous ZSM-5 were larger than that of parent ZSM-5 due to decreasing acid strength after alkali treatment which significantly influenced rate-determining step. Furthermore, diffusion behaviors of toluene were studied by Molecular Dynamics. Larger pores led to the improvement of diffusion behaviors over hierarchical ZSM-5 owing to the decrease of collision frequency between molecules. Therefore, the formation of aromatics was mainly determined by diffusion limitation over hierarchical ZSM-5. The lowest BTX selectivity was obtained over SiO2 deposited mesoporous ZSM-5 due to decreasing acid strength and blockage of pore mouth. Additionally, the deactivation of ZSM-5 serial catalysts in MTA was attributed the formation of insoluble coke. Moreover, the introduction of mesopores and silylation on external surface alleviated the deactivation of catalysts.

Abstract:: Catalytic cracking of butene to propylene was carried out in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor over HZSM-5 catalysts modified by nickel and phosphorus. The structure and acidity of catalysts were measured by N2 adsorption, NH3-TPD and XPS. The results revealed that surface area and strong acid sites both decreased with increasing phosphorus loadings. The increment of phosphorus loadings reduced the butene conversion but enhanced the propylene selectivity and catalyst stability.
Preparation of Mo2C/HZSM-5 and Its Catalytic Performance for the Conversion of N-Butane into Aromatics

Abstract:The preparation of α-MoC1−x/HZSM-5 and β-Mo2C/HZSM-5 from the carburisation of MoO3/HZSM-5 by n-C4H10/H2 were investigated. It is found that α-MoC1−x/HZSM-5 can be produced from the carburisation of MoO3/HZSM-5 by n-C4H10/H2 between 813 and 973 K. The treatment of α-MoC1−x/HZSM-5 with H2 above 873 K leads to the production of β-Mo2C/HZSM-5. The aromatisation of n-C4H10 was investigated using Mo2C/HZSM-5 as the catalyst. It shows that n-butane is mainly cracked on HZSM-5, while the production of aromatics is significantly promoted when Mo2C is loaded on HZSM-5. The optimal molybdenum loading is in the range of 3–6 wt.% and α-MoC1−x/HZSM-5 has better aromatisation performance than β-Mo2C/HZSM-5. On the other hand, when Mo2C is supported on HZSM-5, the activity and durability of Mo2C for the aromatisation of n-butane are greatly improved, the acidity of HZSM-5 is also helpful for the aromatisation performance of Mo2C/HZSM-5. The effect of temperature on the aromatisation of n-butane indicates that the acidity of HZSM-5 plays predominant role in the activation of n-butane at low reaction temperatures while both Mo2C and HZSM-5 contribute to the aromatisation of n-butane at high reaction temperatures.
Catalytic Study of Methanol-to-Propylene Conversion over Nano-Sized HZSM-5

Abstract:Methanol-to-propylene conversion was carried out in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor over nano-sized HZSM-5 zeolites. The HZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized with different Si/Al ratio and silicon sources, and treated with NaOH. The structural property, morphology, and acidity of catalysts were measured by XRD, N2 adsorption, FE-SEM, TEM, and NH3-TPD. The results indicate that the increment of Si/Al ratio decreased the acidity of catalysts and then improved propylene selectivity, while silicon sources had slight impact on the acidity but affected the product distribution. The desilication after alkali treatment could increase intracrystalline mesopores and enhance propylene selectivity. Keywords—Alkali treatment, HZSM-5, methanol-to-propylene, synthesis condition.

Abstract:Room temperature activation of methane over a Zn modified H-ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst was investigated by solid-state NMR spectroscopy in combination with other spectroscopic methods and DFT theoretical calculations. We found for the first time that the activation of methane resulted in the preferential formation of surface methoxy intermediates at room temperature, which mediated the formation of methanol and its further conversion to hydrocarbons. Experimental and theoretical calculation results demonstrated that an oxygen-containing dizinc cluster center in an open shell was responsible for homolytic cleavage of the C-H bond of methane at room temperature, leading to the formation of methyl radicals. The zeolite matrix readily trapped the methyl radicals by forming the surface methoxy intermediates for further selective conversion. In parallel to the homolytic cleavage pathway, heterolytic dissociation of methane was also observed on isolated Zn2+ ions at room temperature, which gives rise to zinc methyl species.

Abstract:A series of HZSM-5 zeolites are fabricated to make it cross-link with an external ultrathin siliceous layer by chemical liquid deposition and the corresponding thickness is measured by TEM and XPS analysis. In situ FTIR experiments disclose that the external surface acidic sites of HZSM-5 zeolite can be covered even by siliceous monolayer (0.7 ∼ 1.3 nm, HZ5-S1). In comparison to parent HZSM-5, the catalytic cracking performance of n-butane over the modified zeolites are evidently enhanced. In particular, the n-butane conversion rate per Brønsted acid site over the HZ5-S2 (16.02 min−1) at 550 °C is 2.82 times than that over the HZSM-5 (5.68 min−1). Meanwhile, the diffusion properties of n-butane over the zeolites are quantified by in situ FTIR spectroscopic analysis. Negative correlation between steady-state diffusivity and n-butane conversion rate per Brønsted acid site can be found, which unravels the origin of the progressive decrease in the catalytic stability. Under comparable conditions, more advantages can be greatly achieved by HZ5-S1 catalyst in the catalytic activity and the yields to light olefins due to the benign diffusivity and the elimination of external surface acidic sites. This study can provide a guidance for the understanding of diffusion intensification and the rational design of superior catalyst for the catalytic cracking reactions of alkanes.

Abstract:The catalytic stability of ZSM-5 zeolite in butene aromatization was improved by the treatment of ZSM-5 zeolite with sodium hydroxide solution of appropriate concentration. By characterizing pore structures, the acidity of the catalyst and the coke amount, we found that alkali-treatment of ZSM-5 led to a formation of new mesopores resulting from a preferential removal of silicon species, while the intrinsic micropores remained unchanged. As for the acidity, the amount and properties of acid sites exhibited a slight change on the alkali-treated ZSM-5 zeolites. In addition, the alkali-treatment to ZSM-5 zeolite led to only a little reduction in the amount of coke during the butene aromatization. But a portion of coke was deposited in the newly created mesopores because of the alkali-treatment and the formation of coke in the micropores was found to be reduced. These changes can suppress the channel blockage of ZSM-5 zeolite by the coke deposits during butene aromatization. The variation of the coking location was the main reason for the favorable enhancement in the reaction stability during butene aromatization.

Abstract:H-ZSM-5 zeolite is a typical catalyst for methanol-to-olefins (MTO) conversion. Although the performance of zeolite catalysts for MTO conversion is related to the actual location of acid sites in the zeolite framework, the catalytic roles of the acid sites in different pore channels of the H-ZSM-5 zeolite are not well understood. In this study, the MTO reaction network, involving the aromatic cycle, alkene cycle, and aromatization process, and also the diffusion behavior of methanol feedstock and olefin and aromatic products at different acid sites in the straight channel, sinusoidal channel, and intersection cavity of H-ZSM-5 zeolite was comparatively investigated using density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamic simulations. The results indicated that the aromatic cycle and aromatization process occurred preferentially at the acid sites in the intersection cavities with a much lower energy barrier than that at the acid sites in the straight and sinusoidal channels. In contrast, the formation of polymethylbenzenes was significantly suppressed at the acid sites in the sinusoidal and straight channels, whereas the alkene cycle can occur at all three types of acid sites with similar energy barriers and probabilities. Consequently, the catalytic performance of H-ZSM-5 zeolite for MTO conversion, including activity and product selectivity, can be regulated properly through the purposive alteration of the acid site distribution, viz., the location of Al in the zeolite framework. This study helps to elucidate the relation between the catalytic performance of different acid sites in the H-ZSM-5 zeolite framework for MTO conversion, which should greatly benefit the design of efficient catalyst for methanol conversion.The aromatic cycle and aromatization reaction of MTO conversion over H-ZSM-5 zeolite occurred preferentially in the intersection cavities, whereas the alkene cycle occurred with the same probability in the intersection cavities, straight channels, and sinusoidal channels.

Abstract:Aromatization of methanol over co-impregnated La/Zn/HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst was studied. The selectivity of aromatics and BTX (benzene, toluene, and xylene) reached 64.0% and 56.6%, respectively, using La/Zn/HZSM-5 at 437 °C, 0.1 MPa and methanol WHSV (weight hourly space velocity)0.8 h−1. Catalytic results showed that the La species was a very good promoter, increased selectivity of aromatics, and prolonged the catalyst lifetime on stream. The effects of the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio in zeolite, Zn and La loading, WHSV, reaction temperature, water content in the feed and H2 pretreatment of catalysts on the catalytic performance were studied in detail. Characterizations of the catalysts by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), NH3-TPD (temperature programmed desorption), SEM (scanning electron micrograph), N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD (X-ray diffraction) and XRF (X-ray fluorescence), were carried out to understand the structure and discuss the aromatization performance of La/Zn/HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst.
