Abstract:In the past decade, the aprotic lithium–oxygen (LiO2) battery has generated a great deal of interest because theoretically it can store more energy than today's lithium-ion batteries. Although considerable research efforts have been devoted to the R&D of this potentially disruptive technology, many scientific and engineering obstacles still remain to be addressed before a practical device could be realized. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the fundamental understanding of the O2 electrochemistry in LiO2 batteries, including the O2 reduction to Li2O2 on discharge and the reverse Li2O2 oxidation on recharge and factors that exert strong influences on the redox of O2/Li2O2. In addition, challenges and perspectives are also provided for the future study of LiO2 batteries.

Abstract:Lithium oxygen battery has the highest theoretical capacity among the rechargeable batteries and it can reform energy storage technology if it comes to commercialization. However, many critical challenges, mainly embody as low charge/discharge round-trip efficiency and poor cycling stability, impede the development of Li-O2 batteries. The electrolyte decomposition, lithium metal anode corrosion and sluggish oxygen reaction kinetics at cathode are all responsible for poor electrochemical performances. Particularly, the catalytic cathode of Li-O2 batteries, playing a crucial role to reduce the oxygen during discharging and to decompose discharge products during charging, is regarded as a breakthrough point that has been comprehensive investigated. In this review, the progress and issues of electrolyte, anode and cathode, especially the catalysts used at cathode, are systematically summarized and discussed. Then the perspectives toward the developments of a long life Li-O2 battery are also presented at last.

Abstract:The widely used Li-ion batteries are insufficient for the rapid needs of high energy storage devices. Li-O-2 batteries are regarded as a promising candidate to meet the needs in the future. This technology has attracted tremendous attention and led to remarkable scientific advances. We consider aprotic Li-O-2 batteries in this review because they have drawn the most attention of scientific research. However, various challenges should be resolved, such as low rate capability, poor cyclability, and instability, before realizing this technology in practice. The mass transfer of O-2 and Li+ is a critical factor that affects the electrochemical performance of Li-O-2 batteries. In this review, we discuss the effects of aprotic electrolytes, porous structure, and operating conditions on the mass transfer, particularly the O-2 mass transfer. Fundamental advances in developing materials (e.g., organic electrolytes) and practical optimizations of the electrode structure and operating conditions are key to enhancing the mass transfer of O-2 and Li+. It is worthwhile to continue the research effort due to the benefits of Li-O-2 batteries. The research directions should be clarified to achieve breakthroughs in the future.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium–air (O2) batteries have received much attention due to their extremely high theoretical energy densities, which far exceeds that of current lithium-ion batteries. The considerable high energy densities come from (i) pure metal lithium as anode and (ii) the cathode oxidant, oxygen, which comes from the surrounding air. However, there are still many scientific and technical challenges especially nanomaterial challenges to overcome before it turns into reality. In this review, the fundamental principles and understanding of the electrochemical reaction in the aprotic lithium–air batteries are first presented. We emphasized on the discussion of the nanomaterial's issues which prevent their practical implementation, including the material status and challenges from cathode, electrolyte, anode and other components. These problems will be discussed in detail and possible solutions are also suggested. Finally, we explore future research directions in the field of aprotic rechargeable lithium–air batteries.

Abstract:The aprotic Li-O-2 battery has attracted considerable interest in recent years because of its high theoretical specific energy that is far greater than that achievable with state-of-the-art Li-ion technologies. To date, most Li-O-2 studies, based on a cell configuration with a Li metal anode, aprotic Li+ electrolyte and porous O-2 cathode, have focused on O-2 reactions at the cathode. However, these reactions might be complicated by the use of Li metal anode. This is because both the electrolyte and O-2 (from cathode) can react with the Li metal and some parasitic products could cross over to the cathode and interfere with the O-2 reactions occurring therein. In addition, the possibility of dendrite formation on the Li anode, during its multiple plating/stripping cycles, raises serious safety concerns that impede the realization of practical Li-O-2 cells. Therefore, solutions to these issues are urgently needed to achieve a reversible and safety Li anode. This review summarizes recent advances in this field and strategies for achieving high performance Li anode for use in aprotic Li-O-2 batteries. Topics include alternative counter/reference electrodes, electrolytes and additives, composite protection layers and separators, and advanced experimental techniques for studying the Li anode vertical bar electrolyte interface. Future developments in relation to Li anode for aprotic Li-O-2 batteries are also discussed.

Abstract:Rechargeable aprotic Li–O2 batteries are one of the most promising next‐generation battery technologies that can deliver extremely high energy density. In the past decades, this technology has attracted worldwide attention, and considerable progress has been achieved. However, numerous critical scientific challenges remain to be solved for practical applications. A specific discussion of recent progress from the perspective of the stable aprotic Li–O2 system with high energy efficiency is presented. The discussion is highlighted on the reaction mechanisms on air cathode, stability of cell components in semi‐open surroundings, and improvement of battery performance by catalyst design. Challenges and perspectives are also presented. This study provides an intensive understanding of aprotic Li–O2 batteries and offers an important guideline for developing reversible and high‐efficiency Li–O2 batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal for rechargeable aprotic Li–O2 batteries is considered one of the most fascinating anode materials that can deliver high theoretical specific capacity, low density, and low negative electrochemical potential. Although lithium-metal anodes have been studied extensively for decades, the cycling performance of rechargeable aprotic Li–O2 batteries based on lithium-metal anodes is rather poor because of the unresolved security issues related to lithium dendrites and contaminant (O2, H2O) crossover from cathode to anode. Here, the critical issues and challenges facing lithium-containing anodes associated with the security, stability, and efficiency are analyzed. Moreover, the latest research progress and strategies used to improve the performance of aprotic Li–O2 batteries based on lithium-containing anode are reviewed. Perspectives toward the development of highly stable lithium-containing anodes are also presented.

Abstract:Aprotic Li-O2 batteries represent promising alternative devices for electrical energy storage owing to their extremely high energy densities. Upon discharge, insulating solid Li2O2 forms on cathode surfaces, which is usually governed by two growth models, namely the solution model and the surface model. These Li2O2 growth models can largely determine the battery performances such as the discharge capacity, round-trip efficiency and cycling stability. Understanding the Li2O2 formation mechanism and controlling its growth are essential to fully realize the technological potential of Li-O2 batteries. In this review, we overview the recent advances in understanding the electrochemical and chemical processes that occur during the Li2O2 formation. In the beginning, the oxygen reduction mechanisms, the identification of O2-/LiO2 intermediates, and their influence on the Li2O2 morphology have been discussed. The effects of the discharge current density and potential on the Li2O2 growth model have been subsequently reviewed. Special focus is then given to the prominent strategies, including the electrolyte-mediated strategy and the cathode-catalyst-tailoring strategy, for controlling the Li2O2 growth pathways. Finally, we conclude by discussing the profound implications of controlling Li2O2 formation for further development in Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable Li-O2 batteries have been extensively investigated as one of most promising alternative for next-generation rechargeable batteries. In this review, notable progress of Li-O2 batteries is discussed. The development process from carbon cathode, which was initially used in Li-O2 batteries, to carbon-free catalysts, which are employed to avoid side reactions between carbon-based cathode and Li2O2, soluble catalysts, and dual-redox mediators, is discussed. The challenges encountered in different stages are evaluated, and innovative directions for further studies of Li-O2 batteries are also discussed.

Abstract:Rechargeable aprotic Li-O-2 batteries that can deliver extremely high energy density have attracted worldwide attention. However, the practical use of this promising technology is hindered by an unsatisfactory cycling life and inferior energy efficiency (high discharge/charge voltage gap), although significant progress has been made in this area in the last decade. Recent reports indicate that soluble catalysts or redox mediators dissolved in aprotic electrolytes can catalyze Li2O2 decom-position and reduce the voltage gap between O-2 reduction reaction and O-2 evolution reaction. Here, a specific review on a series of suitable soluble catalysts for Li-O-2 batteries is provided. This review will highlight the underpinning chemistry and electrochemistry mechanisms of Li-O-2 batteries, as well as the recent progress and challenges of soluble catalysts, with the aim of motivating researchers to further explore applications in Li-O-2 cells and other energy storage and conversion systems.

Abstract:The rechargeable lithium-oxygen (Li–O 2 ) batteries have been considered one of the promising energy storage systems owing to their high theoretical energy density. As an alternative to Li−O 2 batteries based on lithium peroxide (Li 2 O 2 ) cathode, cycling Li−O 2 batteries via the formation and decomposition of lithium hydroxide (LiOH) has demonstrated great potential for the development of practical Li−O 2 batteries. However, the reversibility of LiOH-based cathode chemistry remains unclear at the fundamental level. Here, we review the recent advances made in Li−O 2 batteries based on LiOH formation and decomposition, focusing on the reaction mechanisms occurring at the cathode, as well as the stability of Li anode and cathode binder. We also provide our perspectives on future research directions for high-performance, reversible Li−O 2 batteries.

Abstract:Li-ion and related battery technologies will be important for years to come. However, society needs energy storage that exceeds the capacity of Li-ion batteries. We must explore alternatives to Li-ion if we are to have any hope of meeting the long-term needs for energy storage. One such alternative is the Li-air (O2) battery; its theoretical specific energy exceeds that of Li-ion, but many hurdles face its realization.[1-5] One spin-off of the recent interest in rechargeable Li-O2 batteries, based on aprotic electrolytes is that it has highlighted the importance of understanding the fundamental electrochemistry at the positive electrode within the battery.[6-15] The challenges of obtaining efficient, reversible charge and discharge are well-documented in the field. Here, we describe how our recent studies into the electrochemical mechanism of O2 reduction to form Li2O2 at the positive electrode might allow us to design new strategies to overcome these limitations;[16]For example, exploiting the effect of solvent donor number, Fig. 1. Abstract:Aprotic lithium-oxygen battery has arguably become one of the most active new frontiers in energy storage systems in past decades. Aided by recent advances in highly sensitive in situ spectroelectrochemical techniques, a deepened mechanism understanding on the Li-O 2 chemistry during battery charge/discharge has been achieved, shedding light on potential optimization strategies to further improve the energy capabilities of Li–O 2 batteries. This article summarizes recent experimental efforts aimed at assessing the dynamic battery reactions at molecular level, including in situ electrochemical vibrational spectroscopies of Raman and FT-IR, and quantitative differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy approaches.

Abstract:This paper reports on a one-dimensional lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) battery model incorporating the competitive uptake of discharge intermediate between the electrode surface and the aprotic electrolyte. Unlike previous models, in which a single-step reaction is assumed for aprotic Li-O-2 batteries (2Li(+) + 2e(-) + O-2 -> Li2O2), the present model more realistically depicts the electrochemical process in a battery system by taking account of multiple-step reactions, including the surface reduction reactions of adsorbed oxygen (Li+ O-2* e(-) -> LiO2*) and adsorbed superoxide (LiO2* + Li+ e(-) -> Li2O2) along with the dissolution of superoxide into electrolyte. Transient and spatial analyses are performed to identify the limiting steps for the battery's performance, including oxygen transport and final discharge product precipitation. The effects of the kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction and superoxide dissolution are also investigated. In addition, the impact of cathode microstructures on the battery's performance is studied. It is found that the electrolyte's ability to dissolve the discharge intermediate (LiO2) is critically important to improve the discharge capacity. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Synthesis and Battery Application of Nanomaterials and the Mechanism of O₂ Reduction in Aprotic Li-O₂ Batteries

Abstract:Hunting for improved energy storage devices based on rechargeable Li-ion batteries and other advanced rechargeable batteries is one of the hottest topics in today’s society. Both Li- ion batteries and Li-O₂ batteries have been studied within the thesis. The research work of this thesis contains two different parts. Part 1. The controlled synthesis of the extreme small sized nanoparticles and their application for Li-ion batteries; Part 2. The study of the O₂ reduction mechanism in Li-O₂ batteries with aprotic electrolytes. In the first part, two different types of extremely small-sized TiO₂ nanoparticles with at lease on dimension less than 3 nm was synthesised via solvothermal/hydrothermal reaction, i.e., anatase nanosheets and TiO₂(B). These nanoparticles were obtained without any contamination of long chain organic surfactants. A series of systematic characterisation methods were employed to analyse the size, phase purity, and surface condition. These extremely small-sized nanoparticles exhibit improved capacity, rate performance as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The shapes of load curves of charge and discharge are significantly modified due to the reduced size of TiO₂ nanoparticles. In chapter 3, we will see the variation of the capacity and the load curve shape of the anatase nanosheets according to their thickness and surface conditions. The origin of the excessive capacity is analysed based on the electrochemical data. It has been identified that both pseudocapacitive (interfacial) Li+ storage and the excessive Li+ -storage from the bulk contribute to the increased capacity. In chapter 4, the shape and size of the sub-3 nm TiO₂(B) nanoparticles are studied, a method based the PXRD data is established. These nanoparticles demonstrate a reversible capacity of 221 mAh/g at a rate of 600 mA/g and remain 135 mAh/g at 18000 mA/g without significant capacity fading during cycling. In the last part, a systematic study of O₂ reduction mechanism for aprotic Li-O₂ batteries based on the combination of a series of electrochemical and spectroscopic data is presented. The novel mechanism unifies two previous models for the growth of Li₂O₂ during discharge, i.e., Li₂O₂ particle formation in the solution phase and Li₂O₂ film formation on the electrode surface. Abstract:As modern society continues to advance, the depletion of non-renewable energy sources (such as natural gas and petroleum) exacerbates environmental and energy issues. The development of green, environmentally friendly energy storage and conversion systems is imperative. The energy density of commercial lithium-ion batteries is approaching its theoretical limit, and even so, it struggles to meet the rapidly growing market demand. Lithium–oxygen batteries have garnered significant attention from researchers due to their exceptionally high theoretical energy density. However, challenges such as poor electrolyte stability, short cycle life, low discharge capacity, and high overpotential arise from the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) during discharge and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during charging. This article elucidates the fundamental principles of lithium–oxygen batteries, analyzes the primary issues currently faced, and summarizes recent research advancements in air cathodes and anodes. Additionally, it proposes future directions and efforts for the development of lithium–air batteries.

Abstract:Energy storage challenges have triggered growing interest in various battery technologies and electrocatalysis. As a particularly promising variety, the Li–O2 battery with an extremely high energy density is of great significance, offering tremendous opportunities to improve cell performance via understanding catalytic mechanisms and the exploration of new materials. Furthermore, focus on nonaqueous electrolyte‐based Li–O2 batteries has markedly intensified since there could be a higher probability of commercialization, compared to that of solid‐state or aqueous electrolytes. The recent advancements of the nonaqueous Li–O2 battery in terms of fundamental understanding and material challenges, including electrolyte stability, water effect, and noncarbon cathode materials are summarized in this review. Further, the current status of water impact on discharge products, possible mechanisms, and parasitic reactions in nonaqueous electrolytes are reviewed for the first time. The key challenges of noncarbon oxygen electrode materials, such as noble metals and metal oxides‐based cathodes, transition metals, transition metal compounds (carbides, oxides) based cathodes as well as noncarbon supported catalysts are discussed. This review concludes with a perspective on future research directions for nonaqueous Li–O2 batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery is a potential candidate to be next-generation commercial battery due to high theoretical capacity and energy density among the various rechargeable batteries. However, there are still some obstacles that hindering its commercial application due to the unsatisfactory practical electrochemical performance, including low discharge capacity, poor rate capability, high overpotential, and unstable cycle lifespan, etc. Rational design of cathode materials is demonstrated to be an efficient route to greatly ameliorate the aforementioned existential issues of Li-O2 battery system. Herein, the recent advances in the design and preparation of cathode materials for Li-O2 batteries were summarized in this review. The basic principles and comprehending of reaction mechanism for Li-O2 batteries were proposed in the first part. The following part introduced the latest research and development of the component design of cathode, including carbon-based materials, noble metals, transition metals and their compounds, bimetallic oxides, redox mediators, and photo-assisted catalysts. Then, the structure‐property relationship with different dimensions was covered. In addition, attempts to improve the electrochemical properties of Li-O2 batteries electrode materials via surface engineering, containing heterojunction construction, vacancy regulation, and optimization of exposed crystal planes were discussed. Eventually, a brief conclusion about the challenging and existing problems for Li-O2 batteries was proposed and some perspective related to the development direction were put out. This work will motivate the preparation of oxygen electrodes with stability and efficient catalytic activity for high performance Li-O2 batteries, aims to promote the commercial application of rechargeable Li-O2 energy storages.Graphical abstractThis minireview summarizes the latest research and development of the component design of cathode and their improved strategy, promoting the commercial application of rechargeable Li-O2 energy storages.
