Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) is emerging as a promising pathway to solving the worldwide water shortage and water pollution. Nanomaterials (e.g., plasmonic metals, inorganic/organic semiconductors, and carbon nanomaterials) and related nanochemistry have attracted increasing attention for the solar-to-vapor process in terms of broadband absorption, electronic structure adjustment, and surface/interface chemistry manipulation. Furthermore, the assembly of nanomaterials can contribute to the mass transfer, heat management, and enthalpy regulation of water during solar evaporation. To date, numerous nano-enabled materials and structures have been developed to improve the solar absorption, heat management (i.e., heat confinement and heat transfer), and water management (i.e., activation, evaporation, and replenishment). In this review, we focus on a systematical summary about the composition and structure engineering of nanomaterials in SDIE, including size and morphology effects, nanostructure optimizations, and structure-property relationship decoupling. This review also surveys recent advances in nanochemistry (e.g., preparation chemistry and structural chemistry) deployed to conceptual design of nanomaterials. Finally, the key challenges and future perspectives of nanomaterials for solar evaporation are overviewed. This review aims at providing guidance for the design and construction of nanomaterials for high-efficiency SDIE on the basis of the aspects of materials science and chemical engineering.

Abstract:Solar‐driven water purification is considered as an effective and sustainable technology for water treatment using green solar energy. One major goal for practical applications is to improve the solar evaporation performance by the design of novel photothermal materials, with optimized heat localization and water transport pathways to achieve reduced energy consumption for water vaporization. Recently, some emerging materials like polymers, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and also single molecules were employed to construct novel solar evaporation systems. In this minireview, we present an overview of the recent efforts on materials development for water purification systems. The state‐of‐the‐art applications of these emerging materials for solar‐driven water treatment, including desalination, wastewater purification, sterilization and energy production, are also summarized.

Abstract:Rational and sustainable utilization of resources is critical for the continuous development of our society. Solar energy, as one of the renewables, shows great potential in replacing part of the traditional energy supplies since it is clean, abundant and easily convertible to thermal, electrical and biological energies. Using solar energy as the green driving force, interfacial solar evaporation is a promising way for clean water production to alleviate global water shortage, taking advantage of its high evaporation efficiency (more than 80%) and strong adaptability towards various water sources and fields. In recent years, various kinds of materials with diverse designs have been synthesized and applied in interfacial solar evaporation for clean water production. In this review, recent progress in interfacial solar evaporators for clean water production is systematically reviewed, based on the photo‐thermal conversion mechanisms of solar absorbers including carbonous, semiconductor‐based, and plasmatic ones. Furthermore, key design factors and strategies in interfacial solar evaporators are reviewed and discussed from material and structural design point of view, such as water transport, thermal management, latent heat for water vaporization, salt accumulation and so on. Abstract:Carbon-based materials stand out as photothermal materials for interfacial solar evaporation due to their high solar absorptance, chemical stability, adjustable structure, ease of preparation, and low cost compared to other candidate materials. Development of multifunctional carbon-based materials that can endow the fabricated evaporators with reduced energy loss and evaporation enthalpy is highly demanded to achieve extraordinary evaporation rates. Herein, high-solar-absorptivity multi-shelled hollow porous carbon nanospheres are fabricated and incorporated with an insulating hydrogel bottom layer into an integrated solar evaporator. It achieves a fast photothermal response and a remarkably high solar evaporation rate of 2.4 kg m- 2 h- 1 under one sun. Multiphysics simulation indicates that the porous multi-shelled hollow structure enables sufficient and effective interactions between water and the hydrophilic carbon surfaces, thus producing more intermediate water (IW) and lowering the evaporation enthalpy. The solar-driven water evaporation in the evaporator is probed by in-situ low-field nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation time measurements, based on which conversion of free water (FW) into IW during solar evaporation is proposed. The molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the evolution of FW clusters into IW is facilitated on the carbon surface, thus replenishing the evaporated IW and maintaining continuous high evaporation rates. The demonstrated solar evaporator exemplifies the effectiveness of structural and thermal management in enhancing solar-driven desalination.

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation has received considerable attention as a potential solution for wastewater treatment applications. Despite previous studies confirming significant performance improvements through rational solar evaporator design, challenges remain in achieving comprehensive condensed water purification and addressing high pollutant concentrations in source water. In this review, we evaluate the optimization strategies for solar absorption, thermal management, and water-existing forms to achieve high-efficiency water evaporation. In addition, we provide a brief overview of photothermal materials that are based on a variety of different photothermal conversion mechanisms. Based on previous research, our focus is on exploring purification strategies using interfacial water evaporation technology to address common water pollutants, including volatile organic compounds, dyes, metal ions, and more. Lastly, we discuss the challenges of practical implementation of interfacial water evaporation technology in the field of wastewater treatment, followed by our views and future perspectives.

Abstract:Solar water evaporation plays a central role in low-energy fresh water production which is essential for both human health and economic development. The utilization of photothermal materials with broad solar absorption, in parallel to engineered evaporator designs, offers new approach to achieve efficient light-to-vapor conversion. Thereinto, the stratagem of interfacial water evaporation with the localized heating and restrictive heat losses, has gained wide recognition as an effective avenue towards high-performance sustainable solar steam generation. In this review, we discuss photothermal conversion processes of various solar absorber materials and the conceptual designs of different interfacial photothermal evaporation pertaining to judicious optical, thermal and wettability management, and finally the current progress in scalable saline water desalination, wastewater purification and energy generation applications. This review aims to provide a comprehensive of the recent development in interfacial photothermal evaporation and to inspire research efforts/translations from laboratory to practical large-scale solar-driven clean water production. Furthermore, the opportunities of solar water evaporation should be explored beyond silos so as to conjointly address the interlinked water, energy and environmental nexus.

Abstract:In last decades, solar stills, as one of the solar desalination technologies, have been well studied in terms of their productivity, efficiency and economics. Recently, to overcome the bottleneck of traditional solar still, improving solar still by optimizing the solar evaporation process based on micro/nanomaterials have been proposed as a promising strategy. In this review, the recent development for achieving high-performance of solar still and solar evaporation are discussed, including materials as well as system configurations. Meanwhile, machine learning was used to analyze the importance of different factors on solar evaporation, where thermal design was founded to be the most significant parameter that contributes in high-efficiency solar evaporation. Moreover, several important points for the further investigations of solar still and solar evaporation were also discussed, including the temperature of the air-water interface, salt rejecting and durability, the effect of solid-liquid interaction on water phase change.

Abstract:The world population is growing rapidly and water pollution is becoming a serious problem. Consequently, the scarcity of fresh water resources is becoming increasingly apparent and is garnering global attention. As a sustainable and eco-friendly solution, Solar-driven interface evaporation (SDIE) technology has emerged as a potent method to address water shortages. This article provides a review of the various research developments in the field of fabric-based SDIE materials. It discusses the mechanisms involved, light absorption, construction of fabric based SDIEs based on different photothermal conversion materials, their thermal management, water transport, evaporation rate and efficiency calculations, salt deposition resistance, long-term stability and economic benefits, and application areas. Lastly, the article analyzes the challenges faced by fabric-based solar-driven interfacial evaporators and offers a perspective on their future development.

Abstract:The shortage of freshwater resources is a global problem while traditional desalination methods are energy consuming and inefficient. Recently, solar interface evaporation (SIE) has attracted more and more researchers' attention, due to its high efficiency, low cost and environmental friendliness. This article summarizes the latest development on the SIE materials based on nanofiber membranes. The mechanism, difficulties and solutions in the aspects of material preparation, light absorption, thermal management, water transportation and multi-functionalization are discussed in categories. The review is mainly focused on the evaporation efficiency, salt resistance performance, corrosion resistance and long-term stability of the SIE materials. Finally, the challenges and outlook of the nanofiber based SIE materials are proposed.

Abstract:The global water scarcity and deteriorating environment call for the development of environmentally friendly water treatment technologies. Solar-driven evaporation, well-known as a critical step of water cycles, provides a natural inspiration for water treatment and purification with a minimized carbon footprint. The emergence of interfacial solar vapor generation enabled through carefully tailored materials design in recent years offers an effective approach to enhance solar evaporation, with unique thermodynamic and kinetic advantages. Thermodynamically, by localizing absorbed solar energy at the water surface to avoid thermal dissipation into the entire body of water, high solar vapor transfer efficiency can be achieved. Kinetically, because of reduced thermal mass, a short response time of vapor generation and fast ramping of vapor temperature can be expected. In this perspective review, we start by exhibiting the structural designs of interfacial solar vapor generators to improve the energy transfer efficiency and evaporation rate: first, tuning optical structures to improve the light absorption; second, designing a two-dimensional water path and bioinspired structures to reduce the heat loss; third, harvesting environmental energy as an extra energy input to further increase the evaporation rate. Then, we demonstrate the intrinsic thermodynamic and kinetic advantages of interfacial solar evaporation for various applications. On the thermodynamic side, low energy loss and a high evaporation rate enable effective desalination and water treatment. While on the kinetic side, quick-response and high-temperature steam generation has direct implications in fields like sterilization and power generation. In the end, we briefly conclude the main challenges in fundamental and technical aspects as well as discuss various promising pathways for future development.

Abstract:Amid the gradual global issue of freshwater resources scarcity, solar interfacial distillation has shown immense potential in seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. As the central component of this technology, photothermal materials have been extensively studied for highly efficient solar-vapor conversion. In this review, we present recent advancements in natural and natural-inspired photothermal materials for solar interfacial evaporation. Diverse processing techniques such as carbonization, physical coating, and chemical reactions, etc. used to convert natural materials into photothermal materials are summarized. Moreover, the synthesis of various natural-inspired photothermal materials that mimic natural structures to increase the rate of evaporation and resist salt crystallization were reported. Finally, we highlight the theoretical and practical implications of the current photothermal materials and discuss their further challenges and prospects.

Abstract:<p>Access to clean water is one of the global grand challenges. Using heat energy converted from solar energy to evaporate seawater is a potential approach to mitigate the shortage of fresh water. Interfacial solar evaporation systems employing micro-nano pores in photothermal layers demonstrate enhanced solar energy absorption, heat energy management and water transportation. The review analyzes these systems from the perspective of micro-nano pores for the first time. The basic principles and process of this photothermal evaporation process is presented followed by a review of potential pores such as natural and artificial structures. Then the roles of porous structures are detailed, and this review also points out the ideal pores in photothermal layer. Applications such as seawater desalination, heavy metal removal and steam sterilization are briefly outlined. The review identifies several challenges in the present researches such as how the size, porosity, shape and wettability affect evaporation in mechanisms. Furthermore, the thermal and flow field in the pores should be coupled and consistent with the actual situation. A reliable unified measurement and calculation method is required for making comparison of different results. The micro-nano porous structures need to be stable over a long time and the problem of salt precipitation needs to be addressed. Exploring those issues further would speed the development and practical applications of interfacial solar evaporation systems with micro-nano structures.</p>

Abstract:The booming development of solar‐powered evaporation toward freshwater and resource recovery raises the demand for optimal designs of materials, devices, and processes. This review summarizes the roles of membranes in solar‐driven evaporation and the design principles of membrane structures and properties in diverse processes. Solar‐driven evaporation process brings exciting opportunities to recover clean water and resources in a sustainable way from diverse sources like seawater and wastewater. Separation membranes, as a vital material in many environmental and energy applications, can contribute significantly to this process owing to their structural features. However, the unique roles of membranes in solar evaporator construction and process design are seldom recognized and not summarized yet from scientific principles and application demands, which forms the motivation of this review. Herein, the roles of membranes in different processes based on solar‐driven evaporation are focused and the design principles of membrane materials and devices to meet the requirements of these applications are discussed. Fabrication strategies for photothermal membranes are introduced primarily, followed by a discussion on how to design membrane materials, devices, and processes to pursue optimal performance and realize advanced functions accompanied by evaporation. Furthermore, the future of this field is forecast with both challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology (TSDIE), which directly uses solar energy to evaporate and purify water, is an emerging solution to address the shortage of freshwater resources and the energy crisis. Thanks to the recent innovative designs of functional evaporators and distillers with various unique considerations in kinetics and thermodynamics, TSDIE has achieved evaporation rates of up to 5.9 kg m -2 h -1 (>98% energy efficiency under 1 sun irradiation) and a freshwater collection of approximately 34 L m -2 day -1 . It would be valuable to further discuss and summarize the synergistic modulation and coupling mechanisms of materials, components and devices around specific structural evaporators, as well as recent advances and future dynamics of their interaction with multidisciplinary subjects. This review thus aims to summarize and orient structural evaporators in more detail from the spatial dimension and deformation perspective and to systematically discuss and summarize the coupling roles between light capture, water transport and energy management for different types of structural evaporators. The rationalized structure design of the mainstream evaporator that needs to meet high efficiency desalination and the distiller that can effectively realize freshwater collection is then analysed. Subsequently, the scale-up, long-term stability and their emerging coupling applications of interfacial solar-driven structure evaporators (ISSEs) are discussed. Finally, the salient challenges that need to be addressed in designing structural evaporators and distillers to overcome the global water-energy crisis are highlighted.

Abstract:To tackle the increasingly severe freshwater resource scarcity problem, desalination using solar evaporators is potentially an effective approach. This article reviews the research progress of solar evaporators in recent years, including materials, structures, and performance evaluations. In terms of material research, this article introduces the mechanism of photothermal conversion of metallic, semiconductor, polymeric, and carbon-based materials and their applications in the research of solar evaporators. The structure design of solar evaporators that can improve the photothermal conversion efficiency and water transport efficiency are summarized in detail. Regarding the evaluation of the evaporator performance, common evaluation methods for steam efficiency and environmental benefits of solar evaporators were introduced. Finally, this article analyzes the current problems of evaporators and proposes a prospect for the development of new types of high-efficiency evaporators.

Abstract:Construction of plasmonic trimetallic nanocrystal/polystyrene microsphere Janus structures on the surface of water/vapor transportation layer offers a straightforward way to create the synergic effect among the components of interfacial solar evaporators. The evaporator efficiently couples the effects of photothermal conversion, heat localization, and water supply, exhibiting an excellent evaporation performance. Photothermal conversion, heat localization and water supply are the keys to achieving efficient solar‐driven interfacial evaporation. However, effective coupling between the three aspects at the air/liquid interface remains challenging. Herein, Au@Ag‐Pd trimetallic nanostructure/polystyrene (PS) microsphere Janus structures are designed as the solar absorber and thermal insulator. The Janus structures deposited on a water supply layer act as a 2D interfacial solar evaporator. The PS microsphere localizes heat at micrometer scale and enhances plasmonic absorption of the Au@Ag‐Pd nanocrystals supported on the microsphere. Meanwhile, the Janus structures divide the surface of water supply layer into multiple regions with sub‐micrometer depths, lowering the evaporation enthalpy. Owing to the synergic effects of these components, the evaporator realizes a solar‐to‐vapor conversion efficiency of 99.1% and an evaporation rate of 3.04 kg m−2 h−1 in pure water under 1 sun illumination. The efficient solar‐driven evaporation can last for over 40 h. Furthermore, the solar evaporator shows high‐performance seawater desalination with salt removal ratios of near 100%. This study brings new insights for controlling evaporation thermodynamics and kinetics. The Janus nano‐micro structure design can be extended to other systems for various solar‐thermal applications.
