Abstract:Solar water evaporation plays a central role in low-energy fresh water production which is essential for both human health and economic development. The utilization of photothermal materials with broad solar absorption, in parallel to engineered evaporator designs, offers new approach to achieve efficient light-to-vapor conversion. Thereinto, the stratagem of interfacial water evaporation with the localized heating and restrictive heat losses, has gained wide recognition as an effective avenue towards high-performance sustainable solar steam generation. In this review, we discuss photothermal conversion processes of various solar absorber materials and the conceptual designs of different interfacial photothermal evaporation pertaining to judicious optical, thermal and wettability management, and finally the current progress in scalable saline water desalination, wastewater purification and energy generation applications. This review aims to provide a comprehensive of the recent development in interfacial photothermal evaporation and to inspire research efforts/translations from laboratory to practical large-scale solar-driven clean water production. Furthermore, the opportunities of solar water evaporation should be explored beyond silos so as to conjointly address the interlinked water, energy and environmental nexus.

Abstract:Rational and sustainable utilization of resources is critical for the continuous development of our society. Solar energy, as one of the renewables, shows great potential in replacing part of the traditional energy supplies since it is clean, abundant and easily convertible to thermal, electrical and biological energies. Using solar energy as the green driving force, interfacial solar evaporation is a promising way for clean water production to alleviate global water shortage, taking advantage of its high evaporation efficiency (more than 80%) and strong adaptability towards various water sources and fields. In recent years, various kinds of materials with diverse designs have been synthesized and applied in interfacial solar evaporation for clean water production. In this review, recent progress in interfacial solar evaporators for clean water production is systematically reviewed, based on the photo‐thermal conversion mechanisms of solar absorbers including carbonous, semiconductor‐based, and plasmatic ones. Furthermore, key design factors and strategies in interfacial solar evaporators are reviewed and discussed from material and structural design point of view, such as water transport, thermal management, latent heat for water vaporization, salt accumulation and so on. Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation has received considerable attention as a potential solution for wastewater treatment applications. Despite previous studies confirming significant performance improvements through rational solar evaporator design, challenges remain in achieving comprehensive condensed water purification and addressing high pollutant concentrations in source water. In this review, we evaluate the optimization strategies for solar absorption, thermal management, and water-existing forms to achieve high-efficiency water evaporation. In addition, we provide a brief overview of photothermal materials that are based on a variety of different photothermal conversion mechanisms. Based on previous research, our focus is on exploring purification strategies using interfacial water evaporation technology to address common water pollutants, including volatile organic compounds, dyes, metal ions, and more. Lastly, we discuss the challenges of practical implementation of interfacial water evaporation technology in the field of wastewater treatment, followed by our views and future perspectives.

Abstract:In the last decade, interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG), powered by natural sunlight garnered significant attention due to its great potential for low‐cost and environmentally friendly clean water production in alignment with the global decarbonization efforts. In this review, we aim to share the knowledge and engage with a broader readership about the current progress of ISSG technology and the facing challenges to promote further advancements towards practical applications. The first part of this review assesses the current strategies for enhancing energy efficiency of ISSG systems, including optimizing light absorption, reducing energy losses, harvesting additional energy, and lowering evaporation enthalpy. Subsequently, we elucidate the current challenges faced by ISSG technologies, notably salt accumulation and bio‐fouling issues in practical applications and discuss contemporary methods to overcome these challenges. In the end, we introduce potential applications of ISSG, ranging from initial seawater desalination and industrial wastewater purification to power generation, sterilization, soil remediation, and innovative concept of solar sea farm, highlighting the promising potential of ISSG technology in contributing to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices. Based on the review and in‐depth understanding of these aspects, we propose the future research focuses to address potential issues in both fundamental research and practical applications. Abstract:The global water scarcity and deteriorating environment call for the development of environmentally friendly water treatment technologies. Solar-driven evaporation, well-known as a critical step of water cycles, provides a natural inspiration for water treatment and purification with a minimized carbon footprint. The emergence of interfacial solar vapor generation enabled through carefully tailored materials design in recent years offers an effective approach to enhance solar evaporation, with unique thermodynamic and kinetic advantages. Thermodynamically, by localizing absorbed solar energy at the water surface to avoid thermal dissipation into the entire body of water, high solar vapor transfer efficiency can be achieved. Kinetically, because of reduced thermal mass, a short response time of vapor generation and fast ramping of vapor temperature can be expected. In this perspective review, we start by exhibiting the structural designs of interfacial solar vapor generators to improve the energy transfer efficiency and evaporation rate: first, tuning optical structures to improve the light absorption; second, designing a two-dimensional water path and bioinspired structures to reduce the heat loss; third, harvesting environmental energy as an extra energy input to further increase the evaporation rate. Then, we demonstrate the intrinsic thermodynamic and kinetic advantages of interfacial solar evaporation for various applications. On the thermodynamic side, low energy loss and a high evaporation rate enable effective desalination and water treatment. While on the kinetic side, quick-response and high-temperature steam generation has direct implications in fields like sterilization and power generation. In the end, we briefly conclude the main challenges in fundamental and technical aspects as well as discuss various promising pathways for future development.

Abstract:The sustainable supply of freshwater resources is facing serious challenges due to the frequent occurrence of severe global weather, increasing environmental pollution and continuous population growth. Solar-powered interfacial evaporation systems for wastewater treatment and desalination are considered a hopeful freshwater acquisition strategy to solve water scarcity and energy crisis. Aerogel materials can promote water transmission and evaporation due to their porous structure and tunable surface wettability . In recent years, solar clean water technology based on aerogel has become a current research hotspot result from its advantages, for example high evaporation efficiency and simple preparation method. In this article, the study progress of aerogel materials for solar interface evaporation field is systematically presented. Three main sections are discussed: photothermal conversion materials, interface evaporator and applications. Eventually, the problems faced by the current solar interface evaporation technology in the development process are analyzed, and corresponding countermeasures are proposed.

Abstract:<p>In recent years, interfacial solar evaporation technology has shown great prospects in many applications such as seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, sterilization, and other fields. The efficiency of interfacial solar evaporators (ISEs) has approached 100%, benefitting from photothermal material development and advanced structural design. Herein, we have summarized the strategies to enhance the evaporation performance of ISEs from photothermal materials to evaporation systems. In addition, the available strategies for long-term stable desalination are reviewed. Finally, the potential applications, difficulties, challenges, and opportunities for the future are discussed. We hope that this review can provide some insights into the design of high-efficiency ISEs, development of novel ISEs for stable desalination, acceleration of the practical applications of ISEs, and exploration of other potential applications of ISEs simultaneously.</p>

Abstract:The world population is growing rapidly and water pollution is becoming a serious problem. Consequently, the scarcity of fresh water resources is becoming increasingly apparent and is garnering global attention. As a sustainable and eco-friendly solution, Solar-driven interface evaporation (SDIE) technology has emerged as a potent method to address water shortages. This article provides a review of the various research developments in the field of fabric-based SDIE materials. It discusses the mechanisms involved, light absorption, construction of fabric based SDIEs based on different photothermal conversion materials, their thermal management, water transport, evaporation rate and efficiency calculations, salt deposition resistance, long-term stability and economic benefits, and application areas. Lastly, the article analyzes the challenges faced by fabric-based solar-driven interfacial evaporators and offers a perspective on their future development.

Abstract:Nowadays, the increasing scarcity of fresh water and energy poses a growing threat to sustainable human development, attracting global attention. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) technology has emerged as significant solution to address these challenges by harnessing solar energy for fresh water generation. In the process of vapor generation in the SDIE system, there are various untapped sources of energy such as waste thermal, mechanical energy, enthalpy of steam, and chemical gradient energies, which can be converted into electricity through appropriate modules. Besides, splitting vapor to produce hydrogen exhibits lower Gibbs energy compared to that of liquid water. Additionally, the evaporation concentration achieved by SDIE is beneficial for pollutant degradation and seawater resource extraction. Therefore, the various coupling hybrid systems have been explored to expand the advantages and application areas of SDIE. This review presents an overview of the fundamental principle and the structural design of the SDIE system, while summarizing and discussing different coupling hybrid systems involving energy conversion, water purification, and seawater resource extraction were summarized and discussed. Finally, the challenges faced by the coupling SDIE systems along with future opportunities were highlighted.

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology (TSDIE), which directly uses solar energy to evaporate and purify water, is an emerging solution to address the shortage of freshwater resources and the energy crisis. Thanks to the recent innovative designs of functional evaporators and distillers with various unique considerations in kinetics and thermodynamics, TSDIE has achieved evaporation rates of up to 5.9 kg m -2 h -1 (>98% energy efficiency under 1 sun irradiation) and a freshwater collection of approximately 34 L m -2 day -1 . It would be valuable to further discuss and summarize the synergistic modulation and coupling mechanisms of materials, components and devices around specific structural evaporators, as well as recent advances and future dynamics of their interaction with multidisciplinary subjects. This review thus aims to summarize and orient structural evaporators in more detail from the spatial dimension and deformation perspective and to systematically discuss and summarize the coupling roles between light capture, water transport and energy management for different types of structural evaporators. The rationalized structure design of the mainstream evaporator that needs to meet high efficiency desalination and the distiller that can effectively realize freshwater collection is then analysed. Subsequently, the scale-up, long-term stability and their emerging coupling applications of interfacial solar-driven structure evaporators (ISSEs) are discussed. Finally, the salient challenges that need to be addressed in designing structural evaporators and distillers to overcome the global water-energy crisis are highlighted.

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) is emerging as a promising pathway to solving the worldwide water shortage and water pollution. Nanomaterials (e.g., plasmonic metals, inorganic/organic semiconductors, and carbon nanomaterials) and related nanochemistry have attracted increasing attention for the solar-to-vapor process in terms of broadband absorption, electronic structure adjustment, and surface/interface chemistry manipulation. Furthermore, the assembly of nanomaterials can contribute to the mass transfer, heat management, and enthalpy regulation of water during solar evaporation. To date, numerous nano-enabled materials and structures have been developed to improve the solar absorption, heat management (i.e., heat confinement and heat transfer), and water management (i.e., activation, evaporation, and replenishment). In this review, we focus on a systematical summary about the composition and structure engineering of nanomaterials in SDIE, including size and morphology effects, nanostructure optimizations, and structure-property relationship decoupling. This review also surveys recent advances in nanochemistry (e.g., preparation chemistry and structural chemistry) deployed to conceptual design of nanomaterials. Finally, the key challenges and future perspectives of nanomaterials for solar evaporation are overviewed. This review aims at providing guidance for the design and construction of nanomaterials for high-efficiency SDIE on the basis of the aspects of materials science and chemical engineering.

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) has emerged as an eco-friendly, efficient and emerging technology for solving the water scarcity crisis, which can simultaneously meet the multiple demands of energy, freshwater and environment. With the deepening of research in this field, researchers have proposed more and more advanced and efficient strategies for improving the evaporation performance of SDIE systems. Particularly, the structural design of solar evaporator has become a key research topic in this field to further improve the performance of the evaporator. So far, researchers have designed and improved many innovative and unique structures. However, a comprehensive and systematic summary and overview of the various types of structural design for solar evaporator is still lacking. In this review, we summarize the recent research advances in various structural designs used for SDIE systems in recent years. The preparation, advantages and disadvantages of two-dimensional (2D), three-dimensional (3D), suspended and biomimetic structures and its applications are categorized and discussed, respectively. The influence of the structures on the desalination performance is emphasized. Finally, the challenges and development prospects of SDIE technology are presented. This review provides a systematic reference for the design of future solar evaporator structures, and it is hoped that these efforts will help to drive SDIE technology towards a more sustainable and efficient direction.

Abstract:Solar‐driven water purification is considered as an effective and sustainable technology for water treatment using green solar energy. One major goal for practical applications is to improve the solar evaporation performance by the design of novel photothermal materials, with optimized heat localization and water transport pathways to achieve reduced energy consumption for water vaporization. Recently, some emerging materials like polymers, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and also single molecules were employed to construct novel solar evaporation systems. Abstract:The emerging interfacial solar evaporation technology is an effective measure to address freshwater resources, but the complex diversity of sewage is rarely considered. Janus films with asymmetric wettability instead of conventional homogeneous films for interfacial solar energy evaporation are a creative development. The water-air is relocated inside the evaporator, and the pollutants return to the water body. This review presents recent advances and challenges in solar-driven interfacial evaporation based on Janus films. Firstly, the advantages of Janus film-interface solar evaporators are summarized, and they have superior purification ability compared with traditional structures. Secondly, according to the survey, four common basic structures are summarized: flat sheets, hollow fibers, electrospun nanofibers, and tree-like structures. Thirdly, the materials required to construct Janus films for interfacial evaporation are summarized, mainly carbon-based materials, metal nanomaterials, polymer materials, and semiconductor materials. The fourth part discusses the multi-media purification function of the Janus membrane according to the classification of seawater desalination, organic pollution purification, heavy metal ion purification, acid-base wastewater purification, and bio-fouling purification. Then we summarize the three main challenges currently facing: ensuring water flux, reducing evaporation enthalpy of water molecules, and improving long-term stability and economical production.

Abstract:<p>Owing to its promising approach to tackling freshwater scarcity, solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) which confines the photothermal heat at evaporating surface has attracted tremendous research attention. Optimizing efforts on photothermal conversion and thermal management have greatly improved the SDIE performance. By taking advantage of the heat localization strategy, hybrid SDIE systems have been designed to enhance the solar energy utilization beyond water production. In this review, the development of SDIE and energy flow in hybrid system are discussed. The advanced conceptual designs of different hybrid applications such as electricity generation, fuel production, salt collection, photodegradation and sterilization are comprehensively summarized. Moreover, the current challenges and future perspectives of the hybrid systems are emphasized.
