Abstract:Chiral organoboronates have played a critical role in organic chemistry and in the development of materials science and pharmaceuticals. Much effort has been devoted to exploring synthetic methodologies for the preparation of these compounds during the past few decades. Among the known methods, asymmetric catalysis has emerged as a practical and highly efficient strategy for their straightforward preparation, and recent years have witnessed remarkable advances in this respect. Approaches such as asymmetric borylative addition, asymmetric allylic borylation and stereospecific cross-coupling borylation, have been extensively explored and well established employing transition-metal catalysis with a chiral ligand. This review provides a comprehensive overview of transition metal-catalysed asymmetric borylation processes to construct carbon-boron, carbon-carbon, and other carbon-heteroatom bonds. It summarises a range of recent achievements in this area of research, with considerable attention devoted to the reaction modes and the mechanisms involved.

Abstract:Exploration of new organometallic systems based on polyhedral boron clusters has the potential to solve challenging chemical problems such as the stabilization of reactive intermediates and transition-state-like species postulated for E-H (E = H, B, C, Si) bond activation reactions. We report on facile and clean B-H activation of a hydroborane by a new iridium boron cluster complex. The product of this reaction is an unprecedented and fully characterized transition metal-stabilized boron cation or borenium. Moreover, this intermediate bears an unusual intramolecular B···H interaction between the hydrogen originating from the activated hydroborane and the cyclometallated metal-bonded boron atom of the boron cluster. This B···H interaction is proposed to be an arrested insertion of hydrogen into the Bcage-metal bond and the initiation step for iridium "cage-walking" around the upper surface of the boron cluster. The "cage-walking" process is supported by the hydrogen-deuterium exchange observed at the boron cluster, and a mechanism is proposed on the basis of theoretical methods with a special focus on the role of noncovalent interactions. All new compounds were isolated and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Key compounds were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract:Although organic boron reagents have found wide applications in organic synthesis, the use of alkenyl boron reagents for new methodology development lags behind compared to the commonly used aryl-substituted ones. By taking advantage of the unique reactivity provided by the combination of alkenyl and boron moieties, many excellent methods relying on the use of readily accessible alkenyl boron substrates have been disclosed in the last five years. These methods enable the construction of highly functionalized alkenes or alkyl boron products under mild conditions. This review summarizes the latest representative achievements focusing on the use of new reactivity of alkenyl boron reagents via polar or rdical pathway in catalytic reactions, using transition metal catalysis, organocatalysis or photocatalysis.

Abstract:Bismuth oxyhalides are characterized by their open two-dimensional layered crystalline structures which endow bismuth oxyhalides with high specific surface areas, large amount of surface exposed atoms and some other unique physical and chemical properties. Owing to these abundant features, bismuth oxyhalides have great potential in serving as excellent photocatalysts and electrocatalysts and have received enormous research interest in addressing serious global environmental pollution and energy shortage crisis recent years. In this review, we first discuss the superior structural characteristics of bismuth oxyhalides, comprehensively summarize the efficient strategies including metal/non-metal incorporation, modulating strain, constructing vacancies, constructing heterostructures and constructing moiré superlattice to improve the photocatalytic activities, and then introduce current progress on bismuth-oxyhalides-templated electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. At the end of this article, we propose some perspectives for the future development of bismuth oxyhalides as photocatalysts and templates of electrocatalysts, aiming at constructing superior photoelectrochemical devices and promoting this bifunctional material into industrial application.

Abstract:Non-metal-catalyzed hydrogenation of arenes represents a sustainable and environment-friendly approach for the synthesis of cyclohexane derivatives. Herein, we report the development of a borenium-ion catalyst system which can hydrogenate a number of monocyclic arenes. Additionally, this metal-free catalytic system allows selective partial or full hydrogenation of naphthalene and anthracene by modification of the reaction conditions. Our mechanism studies suggest that the borenium-arene-mediated H2 splitting takes place before the rate-limiting step and the hydride transfer between the resulting neutral borane and protonated arene is likely the rate-limiting step in the catalytic process.

Abstract:Bimetallic Pd based catalysts have received tremendous research interests for many important reactions in fields of important petrochemical industrial process, fine chemical synthesis, environment protection, renewable energy conversion, as their specific activity and selectivity are usually higher than that of pure Pd. With a well-defined composition, Pd–M bimetallic catalysts are also the ideal platform for the investigation of the reaction mechanism, which provides a bridge for the construction of high-performance catalyst. This Review intends to give an overview of the recent advances on the design principles of bimetallic Pd based catalyst in term of active sites' structure and number, and provide insights into the synergy effects between Pd and M as well as the supports to understand the elementary mechanisms of reactions. The Review starts with how the intrinsic activity and selectivity of different structures (alloy, core–shell, and Pd/metal compound interface) would be controlled by ligand effect, strain effect, ensemble effect, and support effect; followed by a discussion of the structure determined mechanism investigation in reactions of selective hydrogenation, CO oxidation, methane combustion, electrocatalytic energy conversion (HER, ORR, MOR), CO<sub>2</sub> reduction, H<sub>2</sub> production, biomass upgrading, and fine chemical synthesis; and then introduces the strategies for how to maximize the active sites' number in a finite metal load. Finally, the operando insight into the active sites' reconstruction under reaction condition will be discussed. On the basis of this Review, the experience and generic rules acquired from the design thoughts, synthetic disciplines, and the functionalities of bimetallic Pd based catalysts in a given reaction could have an important referential significance for revealing catalytic mechanisms at the molecular scales as well as building up other high-efficiency bimetallic catalysts.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

In this article, we proceed from the electron configuration of borylene and review the common methods of stabilizing this category of compounds through a series of borylenes in literature. In addition, the article briefly introduces the metallic borylenes and non-metallic borylenes and their properties. Some of these properties have been applied in nitrogen fixation.

Abstract:Summary Bimetallic nanomaterials have raised more and more significant concern from worldwide researchers in recent years because their new physical and chemical properties derived from synergistic effects between the two metals are highly desirable for specific technological applications, especially for catalytic applications. This review article provides an overview of recent developments in synthesis and properties of bimetallic nanomaterials. First, we summarize recent contributions on developing strategies for the controllable synthesis of bimetallic nanomaterials with various architectures including crown-jewel structure, hollow structure, heterostructure, core–shell structure, alloyed structure and porous structure. Then, we discuss how the microstructural parameters such as surface structure, composition, size, and morphology (crystal facet) influence catalytic properties of bimetallic nanomaterials. Finally, we conclude with our personal perspectives of future research in bimetallic nanomaterials.

Abstract:Nanocatalysis, which is also known as semi-heterogeneous catalysis, sits at the boundary between homogeneous catalysis and heterogeneous catalysis and has been the subject of increasing interest during the course of the last few years. Significant progress has recently been made towards the catalytic applications of bimetallic nanomaterials, which show high levels of activity, selectivity and recyclability. This review provides a summary of bimetallic nanomaterial-catalyzed organic transformations, including selective oxidation, hydrogenation, and coupling reactions, as well as dechlorination, amidation, reductive amination, and hydrogenolysis reactions, and the asymmetric 1,4-addition reactions of arylboronic acids to enones. The complex organic molecules using bimetallic nanocatalysis would be anticipated soon. There is significant scope for bimetallic nanocatalysts to be further developed in terms of our general understanding of their fundamental properties and practical applications. Future development may benefit from the rational design and controllable synthesis of bimetallic nanomaterials, as well as a deeper understanding of their reaction mechanisms and further progress towards the development of sophisticated computational studies involving catalysis, which would require interdisciplinary collaborations.

Abstract:Porous nonprecious metal-based nanomaterials have gained considerable attention in heterogeneous catalysis owing to their low price, high specific surface area, efficient mass/electron transfer, tunable pore structure, and unique physicochemical properties. Controlling the phase and compositions of these porous nonprecious metal-based materials is critical to their applications. Porous nonprecious transition-metal borides (TMBs), typical metal–metalloid alloys, have recently received much interest because of their optimized electronic structure, adjustable crystal phase, and abundant active site. The controlled tuning of the porous structure of TMBs, exploring the relationship between the structure and performance, and understanding the function of B are essential for developing catalysts with excellent performance; however, these factors have rarely been reviewed. Herein, a detailed summary of the synthesis methods of porous TMBs is provided by precisely defining their shape, composition, and pore size/structure. Incorporating B into metals can significantly alter their performance due to the unique metalloid properties of B. Further, we focus on the key roles of B in porous TMBs for related heterogeneous catalytic applications, including phase control, regulated electronic structure, optimized adsorption of reaction intermediates, and enhanced charge transfer and stability. Finally, we outline the shortcomings, challenges, and possible development of porous TMBs, which need to be further explored to increase TMBs’ contribution to heterogeneous catalyst applications and beyond.

Abstract:Hydrogen emerges as alternative green energy, replacing fossil fuels due to its high gravimetric energy density, pollution free, efficiency, and renewability. Ammonia borane (AB) possessing high hydrogen density (19.6 wt.%) and excellent stability has been demonstrated to be efficient for hydrogen production through a hydrolysis reaction under the active catalysts. As efficient catalysts, porous materials enriched with high surface area, abundant pore structure, and favorable transport properties have been incorporated in catalyzed AB hydrolysis. Herein, we present a detailed review of the recent progress of porous materials applied as catalysts in AB solvolysis. The thorough analysis is summarized as porous metal—single-metal, multi-metal, and metallic oxide and porous support materials—carbon, metal-organic frameworks, zeolite, silica, and metallic oxide. Particular emphasis is assessed on the synthesis strategies, structure/morphology, composition, catalytic performance, and reaction mechanisms of underlying AB solvolysis. We figured out major challenges and the future development directions for advanced porous materials to be used as catalysts for efficient AB solvolysis. This article will endow constructive suggestions and strong inspiration for developing porous catalysts in energy-related devices.

Abstract:Abstract In the history of catalysis and organic synthesis, boric chemistry has been developed into one of the most varied and practical disciplines. Several useful Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling (SMC) reactions as well as hydroborylation reactions are regarded the essential tools inside the chemical synthesis toolkit accompanied by researchers of the industry or the academia. Novel synthesis of the less electrically and sterically ongoing carbon–boron synthetic reagents is carried out to ensure a unique coupling reaction utilizing metals along with these reagents which draws considerable interest in accelerating the discovery of creative uses for otherwise difficult organic adducts in many disciplines. This article details the noteworthy advancements in the use of traditional metal-catalyzed carbon–carbon coupling processes with cutting-edge coupling partners such as carbon–boron reagents often the beta-alkyl Suzuki–Miyaura coupling since 2001. The current review covers alkylboranes, organotrifluoroborates, 9-BBN, alkylboronic acids and boronic esters as useful reagents in SMCs that will help synthetic chemists in developing new compounds. Abstract:ConspectusHexagonal boron nitrides (h-BNs) are attractive two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials that consist of alternating B and N atoms and layered honeycomb-like structures similar to graphene. They have exhibited unique properties and promising application potentials in the field of energy storage and transformation. Recent advances in utilizing h-BN as a metal-free catalyst in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane have triggered broad interests in exploring h-BN in catalysis. However, h-BN-based materials as robust nanocatalysts in heterogeneous catalysis are still underexplored because of the limited methodologies capable of affording h-BN with controllable crystallinity, abundant porosity, high purity, and defect engineering, which played important roles in tuning their catalytic performance. In this Account, our recent progress in addressing the above issues will be highlighted, including the synthesis of high-quality h-BN-based nanomaterials via both bottom-up and top-down pathways and their catalytic utilization as metal-free catalysts or as supports to tune the interfacial electronic properties on the metal nanoparticles (NPs). First, we will focus on the large-scale fabrication of h-BN nanosheets (h-BNNSs) with high crystallinity, improved surface area, satisfactory purity, and tunable defects. h-BN derived from the traditional approaches using boron trioxide and urea as the starting materials generally contains carbon/oxygen impurities and has low crystallinity. Several new strategies were developed to address the issues. Using bulk h-BN as the precursor via gas exfoliation in liquid nitrogen, single- or few-layered h-BNNS with abundant defects could be generated. Amorphous h-BN precursors could be converted to h-BN nanosheets with high crystallinity assisted by a magnesium metallic flux via a successive dissolution/precipitation/crystallization procedure. The as-fabricated h-BNNS featured high crystallinity and purity as well as abundant porosity. An ionothermal metathesis procedure was developed using inorganic molten salts (NaNH2 and NaBH4) as the precursors. The h-BN scaffolds could be produced on a large scale with high yield, and the as-afforded materials possessed high purity and crystallinity. Second, utilization of the as-prepared h-BN library as metal-free catalysts in dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions will be summarized, in which they exhibited enhanced catalytic activity over the counterparts from the previous synthesis method. Third, the interface modulation between metal NPs with the as-prepared defects' abundant h-BN support will be highlighted. The h-BN-based strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) nanocatalysts were constructed without involving reducible metal oxides via the ionothermal procedure we developed by deploying specific inorganic metal salts, acting as robust nanocatalysts in CO oxidation. Under conditions simulated for practical exhaust systems, promising catalytic efficiency together with high thermal stability and sintering resistance was achieved. Across all of these examples, unique insights into structures, defects, and interfaces that emerge from in-depth characterization through microscopy, spectroscopy, and diffraction will be highlighted.
Recent progress in the catalytic enantioselective reactions of 1,1-diborylalkanes

Abstract:Organoboron compounds are environmentally benign, have low toxicity and are versatile reagents that are extensively employed in organic synthesis, especially in the realm of asymmetric synthesis. The last several decades have witnessed a tremendous outburst of asymmetric reactions based on various organoboron compounds. Among them, 1,1-diborylalkanes, which contain two boryl groups at the same sp3-carbon atom, are regarded as some of the most versatile and powerful reagents for their unique structure and unusual reaction mode in organic synthesis. Moreover, owing to the stabilizing effect of the empty p-orbital of the neighboring boron atoms and the inherent good steric-hindrance, 1,1-diborylalkanes often exhibit extraordinary reactivity and stereoselectivity compared to other kinds of organoboron compounds in asymmetric synthesis. Herein, the present highlight summarizes and discusses the recent progress achieved in the catalytic enantioselective reactions of 1,1-diborylalkanes during the past decade.

Abstract:Bimetallic nanocatalysts are broadly used for most of the industrial processes, while atomic and molecular level in-depth understanding of their correlation between structure and the corresponding catalytic performance is very challenging yet fundamental in catalysis. The recent progress of atomically precise metal nanoclusters demonstrated superior catalytic performance for many catalytic reactions. As a versatile strategy and due to the synergy effect between different metal elements, bimetallic nanoclusters (BNCs) may significantly enhance the catalytic performances compared with their corresponding monometallic nanoclusters, and thus benefit their catalytic applications. Furthermore, due to their definite structure and monodispersity, they can be used as model catalysts to unveil the atomic level structure-catalytic performance relationship of the bimetallic catalysts. The current review aims to summarize the most recent development of ligand protected BNCs with atomic precision for catalytic applications and provide potentially theoretical guidance for rationally design of catalysts with high catalytic performance. BNCs with atomic precision are discussed, and their structural properties, synthesis strategies, especially their catalytic applications are highlighted. Finally, the main challenges and prospects are provided, with continued efforts expected to achieve further exciting progress in tailoring the atomic-level active sites, and understand the catalytic mechanisms to aid the design of high-performance catalysts.

This review illustrates significant advances in this field over recent five years, and mainly focuses on the bismuth-catalyzed formation of carbon-carbon, carbon-nitrogen, carbon-sulfur bonds, as well as oxidation reaction, protection and deprotection of alcohols and carbonyl compounds, and organic reactions in aqueous media.
