Abstract:Lake Dianchi, a highly eutrophic plateau lake in China, has experienced decades of water treatment and recharge, and achieved better water quality and significant changes in the composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM). To investigate the changes of DOM compositions and its ecological environment effects, this study adopted the three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEMs) and electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI-FT-ICR MS) techniques. The results showed that in recent years, in terms of DOM components, the content of protein-like substances decreased while the content of humic-like substances increased; at the molecular level, the content of lignin and condensed aromatic structures rose in contrast to the declining content of proteins and lipoid. The main reason is that water discharged by the Niulanjiang River and the sewage treatment plant to Lake Dianchi accounted for more than 50% of the total water volume, and DOM of such water had mostly humus-like substances. Besides, The increase in the amount of water entering the lake leads to a shortening of the water exchange period,, which caused more oxygen dissolved in the water body and further promoted the transformation of protein-like substances to humic-like substances. Furthermore, a stronger hydrodynamic power resuspended sediments with a high content of humic-like substances and resulted in faster discharge of this type of organic matter in sediments to the lake water. The high content of humic-like substances in Lake Dianchi shaped by the current hydrological conditions has lowered the bioavailability of DOM in the lake and accelerated the degradation of DOM. It helped to restore the lake ecosystem to a clearer and more stable condition.
