Abstract:With the on-going boom in the construction of dam reservoirs all over the world, the sources and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in fluvial networks are expected to be altered. Considering the importance of DOM as a key biogeochemical component in inland waters, this might bring important ecological and environmental influences. However, limited information is available on the molecular composition of DOM in dam reservoirs. In this study, the spatial characteristics of DOM composition were investigated in Xiangxi tributary and mainstream of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the largest freshwater reservoir in the world. The concentration alteration of conservative cations revealed the water intrusion from mainstream into Xiangxi tributary, which mainly controlled the hydrological gradient. One tyrosine-like (C4), one tryptophan-like (C2), and two humic-like (C1 and C3) fluorescent components were identified in fluorescent DOM (FDOM) by parallel factor analysis (PAFACAC), potentially indicating algal, anthropogenic, and terrestrial inputs, respectively. Decreasing trends of C1, C3 and C4 components and an increasing trend of C2 component were observed from Xiangxi tributary to mainstream, indicating higher terrestrial and algal inputs but lower anthropogenic inputs in Xiangxi tributary compared to mainstream. The Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) characterization further revealed substantial heterogeneity of DOM at the molecular level. Interestingly, S-containing compounds related to synthetic surfactants were consistently detected, and their relative abundances showed an increasing trend from Xiangxi tributary to mainstream, in agreement with the distribution of the anthropogenic derived C2 component. Meanwhile, numerous lignin-like S-containing compounds were identified, likely the result of the incorporation of sulfide ions to lignin-like CHO compounds. This study represents the first molecular level characterization of DOM in the TGR system, which should aid the design and implementation of more detailed future studies.
[Spectral Characteristics of Dissolved Organic Matter in Sediments from Yuanhe River Basin]

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter （DOM） plays an important role in indicating the pollution of the water environment, and sediment is the main source of endogenous pollution of the water environment. Research on the spectral characteristics of DOM in sediments was important for the interpretation of water environment pollution. In this study, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy combined with the parallel factor analysis （PARAFAC） were used to analyze the fluorescent components, sources, and influencing factors of DOM in sediments from the Yuanhe River Basin. The results showed that the average of ω（TN）, ω（TP）, and ω（OM） in sediments from the Yuanhe River Basin were 0.52, 0.66, and 21.22 g·kg-1, respectively. The concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus increased along the flow direction. In addition, the sediment DOM from the Yuanhe River Basin mainly originated from terrestrial sources. The chromophoric DOM concentration and aromaticity of DOM from the downstream reaches were significantly higher than those from the upstream and midstream reaches. Based on PARAFAC, four fluorescent components of DOM in sediments from the Yuanhe River Basin were identified, including three humus-like components （C1, C3, and C4） and one protein-like component （C2）. The sediment DOM was dominated by humus-like materials. Moreover, the fluorescent intensity of the fluorescent components was higher in the downstream reaches. Redundancy analysis revealed that the physicochemical properties of sediments in the mainstream and downstream reaches played a more significant role in the spectral properties of DOM. Phosphorus pollution and the terrestrial humus-like substance of sediment DOM were homologous. These results indicated that the spectral properties of DOM were the indicator of water environmental pollution in the region with strong anthropogenic influence.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are active transitional ecotones between land and ocean, and are considered as hot spots of organic matter processing within the global carbon cycle, which dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role. In this study, combined use of ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) and complementary optical techniques was conducted to assess the detailed molecular composition of DOM in the temperate Liaohe coastal wetland (LCW), NE China in respect to the differences in DOM composition from surface water to sediment pore water. Significant positive correlations between salinity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were observed in both surface waters and pore waters. Pore water DOM is generally characterized by lower protein-like fluorescence and biological index, but higher humification and humic-like fluorescent components than those in surface water DOM. Corresponding to the optical properties, FT-ICR MS measurements show that pore water DOM has higher proportions of heteroatoms, aromaticity index, O/C ratios, unsaturated aliphatics, and peptides, but lower average H/C ratios compared to surface water DOM across locations with different marsh plant species (rice (Oryza sativa), reed (Phragmites australis), Seablite (Suaeda Salsa)) and salinity (0.5 to 51.5 psu). The results suggest that selective preservation for polyphenols, lignin degradation intermediates (highly unsaturated compounds), and microbial resynthesis of heteroatomic compounds are involved in the processing of DOM from surface water to pore water, leading to the formation of higher molecular weight and sulfur-containing molecules. The abundant CHOS compounds could be related to the early diagenetic sulfurization of DOM in sediments. Our unique data set should provide new clues for a comprehensive understanding of the molecular dynamics of DOM in coastal wetlands.

Abstract:The sources and distribution of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the interstitial water of Baiyangdian Lake sediments were analyzed using the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum (UV-vis) method and three-dimensional excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). Results showed that the DOM concentrations and molecular weight were significantly higher in summer than in spring and autumn, based on a254 and E2/E3 values. Three protein-like substance (C1, C2, and C3) and two humic-like substances (C4, C5) were identified with the PARAFAC model. Moreover, protein-like substances accounted for the majority of DOM, reaching (63.56±16.07)%. Total DOM fluorescence intensity, the fluorescence intensity of each component, and the relative abundance exhibited significant spatial variation among the different functional zones in Baiyangdian Lake. Protein-like substances were mainly found in the breeding area, whereas humic-like substances mainly occurred in the natural area. The high BIX, FI, β:α, and low HIX indicated that DOM in sediment interstitial water exhibited low humification and highly autochthonous characteristics. Moreover, the perfect regression equations between water quality and the fluorescent components could provide a useful reference for managers aiming to protect the ecosystem of Baiyangdian Lake.
Characteristics of Dissolved Organic Matter in Sediments of Typical Lakes in Southeastern Hubei Province, China

Abstract:This study aimed to reveal the distribution characteristics and sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sediments of typical lakes in the southeastern of the Hubei province and provide a reference for pollution control of eutrophic lakes. The sediments of four typical lakes (Liangzi, Baoan, Daye, and Qingshan) in the southeastern of the Hubei Province were investigated in May 2019. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and excitation-emission matrixes characteristics of DOM were obtained by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy. Moreover, the DOM fluorescence components were resolved by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). The results showed that: (1) The absorption coefficient a350 in surface sediments followed the order: Baoan Lake (16.99 ± 3.82 m−1) > Qingshan Lake (15.37 ± 3.8 m−1) > Liangzi Lake (12.54 ± 5.58 m−1) > Daye Lake (12.43 ± 1.43 m−1). Specifically, with increasing depth in the sediment cores, a350 increased and then gradually decreased in Daye Lake and Baoan Lake, but fluctuated in Liangzi Lake and Qingshan Lake with a roughly decreasing trend. (2) Two humic-like components (C1, C2) and one protein-like component (C3) were identified via PARAFAC. This analysis also showed that the surface sediment fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) was dominated by protein-like, while the sediment core FDOM was dominated by humic-like in Liangzi Lake. The proportion of humic-like in FDOM was higher than protein-like in surface sediments and sediment cores of Baoan, Daye, and Qingshan Lakes. (3) The DOM of surface sediments in the Liangzi Lake comprised mostly autochthonous components, mainly produced by the vital activities of aquatic organisms. The DOM of surface sediments in Baoan Lake and Qingshan Lake showed weak humic and moderate autochthonous characteristics. The humification of DOM in sediment cores of Liangzi, Baoan, and Qingshan Lakes gradually decreased from depth to the surface. The DOM in surface sediments of Daye Lake had strong humic and moderate autochthonous characteristics. (4) In general, the DOM of lake sediments in southeastern Hubei Province has dual-contribution characteristics representing terrigenous and endogenous sources. In the restoration and treatment of lake ecology, both internal and terrestrial pollution should be considered. At the same time, it is noteworthy that cyanobacteria depletion and aquatic residues caused potential internal pollution.

[Spectral Characteristics of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) from a Typical Reservoir Lake from Inland of Three Gorges Reservoir Areas: In the View of Riparian Ecosystem Analysis]

Abstract:For further understanding the geochemical characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in "reservoir-type" lake, in this study a typical "reservoir-type" lake, Changshou Lake located in inlands of Three Gorges Reservoir areas, was selected to investigate the composition, sources and spatial distributions of chromophoric DOM (CDOM) in this lake, through UV-Vis and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy combined within analysis of riparian eco-system differences. The results showed that DOM concentrations including dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and CDOM abundance in different sampling sites varied spatially to a certain degree, in contrast to fluorescence component of DOM showing a constant level. In backwater zone (also called stagnant zone alternatively), due to accumulation of DOM and limited impact of terrestrial contribution, the endogenesis (autochthonous production) was the predominant geochemical process showing an obvious "authigenic-control" characteristic, and relatively lower aromaticity and molecular weight. In comparison, sampling sites surrounding artificial forests and tourism development, the highly humic (highly aromatic) substances resulted from terrestrial inputs were the main source, but discharge due to human activities was also responsible for highly protein-like component observed in DOM. Additionally, in the entry zones of lake from upstream river, DOM was affected by fruit plantations and residences, contribution from upstream river could also be neglected. From the other aspects, some significant correlations were also observed, which were independent of riparian eco-system differences, for example, the SUVA280 versus S(275-295) (negative), CDOM versus FDOM (positive), and CDOM and S(275-295) (negative), indicating the correlation was an intrinsic property of DOM that could not be affected by the surrounding environment. Meanwhile, the main chromophoric component of CDOM in Changshou Lake was high molecular weight (HMW) components within highly aromatic structures. At least, 51% of CDOM dynamic could be explained by changes of FDOM, especially in backwater zone the co-variance was more obvious. Furthermore, when the traditional fluorescence index (FI) could not comprehensively explain the differences of DOM sources due to very similar (statistically insignificant) values, integration of UV-Vis and fluorescence spectral characteristics and detailed discussion of riparian eco-system differences, might be an important way to help further resolution of DOM composition and sources in aquatic environments, such as lake, river and watershed.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important part of the material cycle in the water environment, and it plays an important role in the nutrient cycle of nitrogen and phosphorus in eutrophic water and biological processes. Dianchi Lake is a heavily eutrophic plateau lake in China. To investigate the fluorescence characteristics of DOM and the influences of DOM on water quality of rivers and lakes in the Dianchi Lake basin, three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry were employed to determine the features of dissolved organic matter (DOM) components. According to the research results, the DOM components in rivers and lakes in the Dianchi Lake basin were dominated by humic-like substances and affected by seasonal changes to a certain extent. DOM in Dianchi Lake is affected by the macrophytes and algae distribution as well as inflowing rivers, but the dominant factors are different in dry and rainy seasons. PCA results indicated that DOM components had relatively high relevance to water quality indicators, especially COD and TN. In conclusion, Lake ecosystem status and pollution levels can be characterized by DOM to some extent, the DOM components in the Dianchi Lake are prone to humification with the implementation of wastewater treatment and aquatic ecological restoration projects, as reflected in the improved water quality index.

Abstract:Nansi Lake is the largest lake along the eastern route of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP). It is divided into the upper lake and the lower lake by a dam. By using UV-Vis spectroscopy, synchronous fluorescence (SF) spectroscopy, excitation-emission matrix and parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), spatial, and temporal differences in the properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were found in the 2 areas of Nansi Lake under different hydrological conditions. A total of 5 fluorescence components were obtained by EEM-PARAFAC, which included 3 humic-like components (C1–C3) and 2 protein-like components (C4 and C5). On the spatial scale, the fluorescence intensities (Fmax) of humic-like substances and the ratio of the fluorescence intensity of humic-like components to the total fluorescence intensity (%Fmax) and degree of humification (HIX) in the upper lake were higher than those in the lower lake. This indicated the strong contributions of terrestrial sources to the upper lake, while DOM properties in the lower lake were more endogenous than those in the upper lake. On the temporal scale, protein-like substances played a more important role in DOM properties in April (Fmax=0.72±0.03 in the upper lake and 1.84±0.13 in the lower lake) and July (Fmax=1.10±0.05 in the upper lake and 1.49±0.04 in the lower lake) than in October. This result might be related to the water transfer of the eastern route of the SNWDP and to the death of submerged plants. However, the contents of humic-like substances (ranging from 55.61±1.23% to 66.56±0.58% for the upper lake and 29.98±1.56% to 61.98±0.99% for the lower lake) and degree of humification (from 2.23±0.06 to 3.10±0.05 for the upper lake and 1.06±0.05 to 2.62±0.08 for the lower lake) in Nansi Lake showed an increasing trend from April to October. In addition, significant correlations and good linear relationships between humic-like components, a254, and DOC in the 3 months reflected the continuous contribution of humic-like substances to DOM properties in Nansi Lake. Rapid changes in the fluorescence signal were largely dependent on changes in water quality. The fluorescence signal could be a tool for the management of water quality in Nansi Lake.

Abstract:Based on excitation emission matrix spectroscopy (EEMs) technology combined with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra, we analyze the spatial distribution, spectral characteristics, and sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Baiyangdian Lake, China, during a winter freezing period. Results showed that the UV-vis absorption spectrum of DOM had no obvious characteristic peak, and that the variation coefficient of absorption exhibited a significant difference (<0.05) among different districts of Baiyangdian Lake, but that there was no significant difference between the surface and bottom waters. The changes of E3/E4, E2/E3, and showed that DOM had low humic and autochthonous characteristics. Two protein-like substances (C1 and C2) and one humic-like substance (C3) were identified by PARAFAC, with a significant correlation (<0.001) being found between C1 and C3, and C2 and C3. The total DOM fluorescence intensity and the fluorescence intensity of each component exhibited significant differences (<0.01) in the distribution among the different districts of Baiyangdian Lake, with the maximum value being associated with a sample from the Tanghe River and the minimum value being associated with a sample from Shaochedian. Moreover, the sum of C1+C2 accounted for the major proportion of DOM. DOM exhibited a strong autochthonous characteristic based on the values of BIX, FI, and HIX. Principle component analysis (PCA) and Adonis analysis showed that the spectral characteristics of DOM exhibited a significant difference (<0.05) among the different districts. C1, C2, and C3 were significantly correlated (<0.001) with DOM indices (HIX, BIX, Fn280, and Fn355) and water quality parameters[total nitrogen (TN), permanganate index, and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP)] based on multiple linear regression. Our results contribute to previous investigations and provide findings that can assist in the future management and control of organic carbon pollution sources to Baiyangdian Lake.

Abstract:Carbon cycling in rivers is altered by the creation of impoundments through dam construction. This paper seeks to identify the source and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in both water and sediment in Lake Longjing by contrasting the optical characterization of DOM. By comparing the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, we show that the sediment (53.7 ± 16.6 mg/L) acts as a DOC source to the overlying water (23.1 ± 1.4 mg/L). The estimated DOC flux in the original reservoir region (88.3 mg m−2 d−1) is higher than that in the newly submerged region (26 mg m−2 d−1), whereas the latter has larger contribution to the DOC annual load because of its larger sediment area. Spectroscopic analysis suggested that pore waters had higher aromaticity and lower proportion of fresh DOM than those in surface waters and benthic overlying waters. Through Parallel Factor Analysis, four fluorescent components were identified, i.e., two terrestrial humic-like components, one protein-like, and one microbial humic-like. Spearman correlation and Non-Metric-Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) analysis manifested that fluorescent DOM in surface sediments is mainly contributed by autochthonous source, the others by allochthonous source. Due to the high sensitivity of the fluorescent intensity of the protein-like component, it is a useful indicator to reveal the changes of source of DOM.

Abstract:Characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is useful in understanding environment quality and carbon cycling in the lake system. In this study, the fluorescence of DOM, major ions, and nutrients in water were investigated to understand the sources and the transformation of DOM in Dianchi Lake, the sixth largest freshwater lake in China. The dissolved organic carbon content in water above the deposition layer was higher than 5 mg C∙L−1 but lower than that in pore water. Two primary components of humic (C1) and protein-like components (C2) were identified using parallel factor (PARAFAC) modeling on sample fluorescence spectra. Organic components were related to mineral structures, and encapsulation of bacterial or algal cells into particulates could be disintegrated to release DOM. The aromaticity and the hydrophobicity of optical properties were regulated by percentages of chromophores (CDOM) of DOM in surface water, whereas by percentages of fluorophores (FDOM) in DOM in pore water, the underlying water layer was defined as a belt of transition. The molecular weight enhanced with percentages of C1 in CDOM increased in water above the sediment layer and the pore water at the northern lake site, but molecular weight attenuated with percentages decreased in pore water at the southern lake site. DOM not only originated from particulate decomposition but also derived from internal transformation among different, dissolved organic molecules. Small molecules were aggregated into larger ones, and, conversely, large molecules decomposed into small sizes. Another speculation is that dissolved molecules adsorbed or were encapsulated into particulates or were degraded and released into dissolved phases. The precise factors regulated composition, structure, and spectral properties of dissolved organic matter in the Dianchi Lake. This study highlights that sources of DOM and transformation mechanisms in the lake water could be correlated with nutrients and primary geochemical factors for mobility and distribution in different water compartments.

Spatial differences of dissolved organic matter composition and humification in an artificial lake

Abstract:The depth-dependent dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) structure and humification in an artificial lake limits the understanding of lake eutrophication and carbon cycling. Using fluorescence regional integration (FRI) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) models to analyze the 3D fluorescence spectroscopy dataset, we revealed the depth-dependent structure and vertical distribution of DOM in the estuarine and center regions of Lake Hongfeng. The percentage fluorescence response (Pi,n) showed humic acid is an important part of DOM in Lake Hongfeng. Fluorescence results show that the fulvic-like and protein-like materials in HF1-DOM located at the estuarine position showed greater variation in the middle stage, probably due to human influence and sediment suspension. Fluorescence index (PI+II+IV,n/PIII+V,n and FIC4/FIC3) can be used to indicate the degree of humification of DOM in artificial lakes. Results of each index show that the estuary is more affected by human activities, and the humification degree is significantly lower than that of the center of the lake. The evaluation index system of the humification degree of artificial lake established in this study can effectively predict the eutrophication state of the typical area of artificial lake and deeply understand the possible important influence of human activities on the carbon cycle of lake.

Abstract:As key parts of land-sea transition zones, estuary ecosystems play a very important role in the ocean carbon cycle processes. The sources, degradation, and preservation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in estuaries have long been the subject of intense study. To examine the aforementioned issues, this study examined three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy to determine the spatial distribution and sources of DOM in the pore water of three sedimentary cores from the Pearl River Estuary (S1, S2 and S3, with increasing salinity). Using the parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) method to analyze the three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum data, five fluorescent components were obtained—three humic-like components (C1, C3, and C4), and two protein-like components (C2 and C5). C2 exhibited a significant positive correlation with the sediment microbial deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA) concentration (R2=0.69, P < 0.01), indicating that the protein-like component C2 might be derived from the catabolism of in situ microbes. C5 displayed a relatively weak correlation with DNA concentration (R2=0.40, P < 0.05), presumably due to the incorporation of phenolic compounds, which have a fluorescence peak very similar to that of protein-like components. The source of humic-like fluorescent components is extremely complex. The content at station S1 was relatively high (1.45–8.83 R.U.), which implies that terrestrial inputs had a significant influence. The three humic-like components showed similar distributions at S2 and S3, and the fluorescence intensity was rather low; this result indicates that the DOM at these two stations was more likely affected by the metabolism of algae and microorganisms. The humification index (HIX) and the fluorescence intensity of protein-like components increased and decreased, respectively, with depth. There was a significant positive correlation between the relative content of protein-like components and the spectral slope ratio (SR), which indicates that DOM transitioned from low-molecular-weight protein-like components in the surface sediment to high-molecular-weight humic-like components in the subsurface. This study provides valuable information for understanding the pore water size/reactivity (PWSR) model of DOM and its biochemical processes occurring in estuary sediments.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM), the primary participant of carbon and nitrogen cycle, has a great impact on the behavior and fate of organic pollutants and heavy metals in eutrophic lakes. The dynamic spectral properties of DOM fractions were revealed in an aquatic-terrestrial ecotone under the different types of land use. Composite soil samples of different depths (0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm) were collected from four different land uses along a disturbed-impact gradient in Taihu Lake, China, i.e., grassland (GRL), forest land (FOL), paddy field (PAF), and vegetable field (VEF). DOM mainly consisted of tyrosine-like material (TYLF), tryptophan-like material (TRLF), microbial humic-like material (MHLF), fulvic-like material (FLF) and humic-like material (HLF) within all soil profiles, where TRLF was the dominant component (61.30 %) using synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) combined with principal component analysis and Gaussian band fitting. Based on two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy with SFS and Fourier transform infrared, the variation order of DOM fractions was FLF → MHLF → HLF → TRLF → TYLF within the GRL soil profile, and MHLF exhibited an oppositive change with aliphatic OH and amide I in protein. The order of DOM fractions was MHLF → FLF → HLF → TYLF → TRLF within the FOL soil profile, and the change trend of MHLF remained oppositive with aliphatic OH and CO in ester. The order of DOM within the PAF soil profile fractions was TRLF → MHLF → HLF → TYLF → FLF, and changing trends of TYLF were oppositive to aliphatic OH, CH bending vibration, CH bending vibration and CO in ester. The order of DOM fractions was HLF → TYLF → TRLF → FLF → MHLF within the VEF soil profile, where the changing trend TYLF remained oppositive to aliphatic OH, CH deformations in lignin and aliphatic group and amide I in protein. This study may provide important support for alleviating lake water eutrophication or pollution.
Characteristics of Dissolved Organic Matter and Its Role in Lake Eutrophication at the Early Stage of Algal Blooms—A Case Study of Lake Taihu, China

Abstract:Decaying algal blooms in eutrophic lakes can introduce organic matter into the water and change nutrient concentrations in the water column. The spatial distribution and composition characteristics, sources, and contribution to eutrophication of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the overlying water of Lake Taihu, a typical eutrophic lake in China, were analyzed by ultraviolet–visible spectra and three-dimensional fluorescence excitation–emission matrix spectra combined with the statistical decomposition technique, parallel factor analysis. The concentration of DOM was represented by dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and DOC in overlying water of Lake Taihu was 2.86–11.83 mg/L. The colored DOM (CDOM) was characterized by an absorption coefficient at 280 nm (a280) and 350 nm (a350), which were 6.63–29.87 and 1.84–10.41 m−1, respectively. These values showed an increasing trend from southeast to northwest, and the high values were concentrated in the northwest and northern lake areas. The parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) identified two protein-like (C1: tyrosine-like and C2: tryptophan-like) and one humic-like (C3: humic acid and fulvic acid) fluorescence components for fluorescent DOM (FDOM). The most dominant components were protein-like components (C1 + C2), whose fluorescence intensity contributed 87.55% ± 3.39% to the total fluorescence intensity (Ft) of FDOM (3.38 R.U.). The mean value of the fluorescence index (FI) and index of recent autochthonous contribution (BIX) of DOM was 1.77 and 0.92, and DOC, a280 and fluorescence intensities of FDOM components were all significantly and positively correlated with chl. a, indicating that DOM, CDOM, and FDOM were all mainly derived from algal activities and metabolites. The average humification index of the DOM was 0.66, which indicated a low humification degree. The protein-like DOM was correlated with DON and DOP, and might make great contributions to the continuous occurrence of algal blooms.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sediment pore water plays a key role in lake water quality, complexation of the contaminants, biogeochemical cycles, and even climate. To better understand the vertical dynamics and characteristics of DOM among pore water profiles, we investigated concentrations, chemical structures, and benthic fluxes of DOM in plateau lake sediments via stoichiometric analysis, ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption, three-dimensional fluorescence matrix spectroscopy (EEMs), and parallel factor model (PARAFAC). The results revealed that dissolved organic carbon (DOC), concurrent with chromophoric DOM (CDOM) and fluorescent DOM (FDOM), tended to accumulate in the anaerobic deeper layers. These trends also demonstrated a good agreement with the ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentration, implying that the pathway of DOM dynamics was closely related to the redox state. The EEMs-PARAFAC model revealed that DOM in pore water mostly consisted of two terrestrial humic-like components (average contribution:> 60%) followed by microbial and tryptophan-like components, respectively. Terrestrial humic-like components were relatively stable, and their abundance was positively correlated with the FDOM level (p < 0.05). The changes of aromatic, molecular weight, and humification degree of DOM were possibly driven by microbial activities at different depths. Moreover, benthic flux estimations indicated that DOM and the total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) in inland sediments were potential sources for the overlying water and possibly affected the quality and ecological safety of lake water bodies.

Abstract:The present study aims to investigate the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Huai River in the winter dry season using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis), three-dimensional fluorescence excitation–emission matrix spectroscopy-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), and liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection (LC-OCD). The PARAFAC model results revealed three DOM chemical components, namely: UV-type humic substances (C1), humic acid-like substances (C2), and protein-like substances (C3). However, humic substance components (C1 + C2) were the major fluorescent DOM components, accounting for 61.88 ± 6.45%. In this study, the reduced external inputs in the winter dry season resulted in a significantly higher fluorescence intensity of the C3 component than that of C2 ( P < 0.01). On the other hand, the LC-OCD results indicated significant differences ( P < 0.01) between different water body types of the Huai River due to the strong influences of human activities and sewage discharge. The polysaccharide, humic substance, low molecular acid, and nitrogenous compound concentrations in the river water exhibited decreasing trends from upstream to downstream of the river. In contrast, the concentrations of amino acid derivatives exhibited a significant increasing trend from upstream to downstream of the river. The concentrations of nitrogenous compounds were accumulated in the confluence zone of the river tributaries and mainstream. The DOM concentrations in the river water were influenced by multiple factors. However, the decrease in the concentrations of proteins and polysaccharides enhanced the autochthonous process in the river water body, gradually increasing the concentrations of humic substances.

Abstract:The sources and properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in two lakes with different non-point source inputs were investigated by combining conventional three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy methods with a self-organizing map (SOM). To assess the DOM humification level, the representative neurons 1, 11, 25, and 36 were assessed. The SOM model showed that the DOM humification level of the Gaotang Lake (GT) which has a mainly agricultural non-point source input was significantly higher than that of the Yaogao Reservoir (YG) which has a mainly terrestrial source input (P < 0.01). The GT DOM mainly came from factors such as agricultural-related farm compost and decaying plants, while the YG DOM originated from human activities around the lake. The source characteristics of the YG DOM are obvious, with a high level of biological activity. Five representative areas in the fluorescence regional integral (FRI) were compared. The comparison showed that during the flat water period, the GT water column showed more terrestrial characteristics, even though the humus-like fractions in the DOM of both lakes were derived from microbial decomposition. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the agricultural lake water DOM (GT) was dominated by humus components, while the urban lake water DOM (YG) was dominated by authigenic sources.

Abstract:Based on a field investigation conducted in May 2019, the spatial distribution characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sediments of Wuli Lake in the Taihu Lake basin were analyzed using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy. The results showed that: (1) The overall water quality of West Wuli Lake was significantly better than that of East Wuli Lake. The water transparency, measured in Secchi depth (SD), of West Wuli Lake was higher than that of East Wuli Lake, while the suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) were higher in East Wuli Lake than in West Wuli Lake. (2) The spatial distribution of a(350), M and SR values of DOM in surface sediment in Wuli Lake differed; a(350) values were highest in the northwestern part of Wuli Lake, while M and SR values were highest in the eastern part. The mean value of SR in Wuli Lake was 2.12 ± 0.67, indicating that the DOM contained more authigenic humus; the mean M value was less than 3.5, indicating that the proportion of humic acid was higher than that of fulvic acid. (3) The ranges of the biogenic index (BIX), the humic index (HIX) and the fluorescence index (FI) of surface sediments in Wuli Lake were 0.64~0.85, 3.79~4.84 and 1.72~1.84, respectively, indicating that surface sediments in Wuli Lake were characterized by authigenic sources, and the humic components of DOM in sediments were characterized by a dual contribution from terrestrial and endogenous sources.
