Abstract:A simple, air-stable, inexpensive and easily prepared molecule, N-methyliminodiacetic acid (MIDA), is reported as a ligand for palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of phenylboronic acid with aryl chlorides. The yield of the corresponding Suzuki coupling reaction is up to around 90% at both high temperature of 80 degrees C and room temperature under ambient atmosphere. Abstract:The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling is among the most important C-C bond-forming reactions available due to its reliability, chemoselectivity, and diversity. Aryl halides and pseudohalides such as iodides, bromides, and triflates are traditionally used as the electrophilic coupling partner. The expansion of the reaction scope to nontraditional electrophiles is an ongoing challenge to enable an even greater number of useful products to be made from simple starting materials. Herein, we present how an NHC-based Pd catalyst can enable Suzuki-Miyaura coupling where the C(acyl)-O bond of aryl esters takes on the role of electrophile, allowing the synthesis of various ketone-containing products. This contrasts known reactions of similar esters that provide biaryls via nickel catalysis. The underlying cause of this mechanistic divergence is investigated by DFT calculations, and the robustness of esters compared to more electrophilic acylative coupling partners is analyzed.

Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling or aryl halides is widely employed in the synthesis of many important molecules in synthetic chemistry, including pharmaceuticals, polymers and functional materials. Herein, we disclose the first palladium-catalyzed decarbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of amides for the synthesis of biaryls through the selective activation of the N-C(O) bond of amides. This new method relies on the precise sequence engineering of the catalytic cycle, wherein decarbonylation occurs prior to the transmetallation step. The reaction is compatible with a wide range of boronic acids and amides, providing valuable biaryls in high yields (>60 examples). DFT studies support a mechanism involving oxidative addition, decarbonylation and transmetallation and provide insight into high N-C(O) bond activation selectivity. Most crucially, the reaction establishes the use of palladium catalysis in the biaryl Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of the amide bond and should enable the design of a wide variety of cross-coupling methods in which palladium rivals the traditional biaryl synthesis from aryl halides and pseudohalides.

Abstract:The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction is an efficient organic method for synthesizing biphenyl products. However, its conventional reliance on toxic soluble organometallic palladium catalysts or expensive palladium nanoparticles, along with the need for elevated temperatures and prolonged reaction times, presents a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a palladium-free approach using plasmonic silver nanoparticles that enables the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction to proceed at room temperature under visible light. Utilizing the surface-enhanced Raman scattering characteristics of silver, we conducted dynamic self-monitoring of the reaction. Our findings reveal that this plasmon-induced Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction fundamentally operates as a heterogeneous reaction involving coupling between radicals, distinct from conventional palladium-based reactions. Moreover, the cleavage of C-Cl and C-B bonds, fundamental prerequisite to the coupling, is driven by plasmonic hot electrons and plasmon-induced reactive oxygen species, respectively. These findings not only provide insights into the design and regulation of plasmonic catalysts but also enhance theoretical understanding of the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction in a broader context.

Abstract:Pd(OAc)(2) in a mixture of water and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is shown to be an extremely active catalyst for the Suzuki reaction of aryl iodides and bromides. The reaction can be conducted under mild conditions (50 degrees C) without the use of a microwave or phosphine ligand in high yields. The isolation of the products is readily performed by the extraction of diethyl ether, and the Pd(OAc)(2)-PEG can be reused without significant loss in activity.

Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed denitrative Suzuki coupling of nitroarenes using 2-aryl-5-(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)-2,3-imidazolylidene[1,5-a]pyridines as the ligands is described. The key to success is the use of the NHC ligands which show strong donating ability and suitable steric hindrance allowing the successful oxidative addition of Ar-NO2 bonds. Both aromatic and aliphatic boronic acids are tolerated, and a variety of biphenyls and alkylarenes were obtained in good to excellent yields.

Abstract:We report the Pd-catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling of aliphatic amides. Although tremendous advances have been made in the cross-coupling of aromatic amides, C–C bond formation from aliphatic amides by selective N–C(O) cleavage has remained a major challenge. This longstanding problem in Pd catalysis has been addressed herein by a combination of (1) the discovery of N,N-pym/Boc amides as a class of readily accessible amide-based reagents for cross-coupling and (2) steric tuning of well-defined Pd(II)-NHC catalysts for cross-coupling. The methodology is effective for the cross-coupling of an array of 3°, 2°, and 1° aliphatic amide derivatives. The catalyst system is user-friendly, since the catalysts are readily available and are air- and bench-stable. Mechanistic studies strongly support an amide bond twist and external nN → π*C═O/Ar delocalization as a unified enabling feature of N,N-pym/Boc amides in selective N–C(O) bond activation. Efficient Protocol for the Phosphine-Free Suzuki-Miyaura Reaction Catalyzed by Palladium on Carbon at Room Temperature

Abstract:A mild and efficient protocol for the phosphine-free Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction of aryl bromides with arylboronic acids has been developed which utilizes the commercially available 10% Pd/C (3.5 mol% Pd) in ethanol-water (1:1) and Na2CO3 at room temperature. The reaction is convenient, environmentally benign and generates excellent yields of the coupled products (94-100%). The catalyst can be recycled using simple filtration and washing sequences without significant decrease in the yield of coupling product up to the fourth run.

Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed C--C bond formation involving secondary sp3-hybridized carbon is described. These reactions occur with secondary 1-bromoethyl arylsulfoxides and different arylboronic acids, to produce the corresponding arylated sulfoxides in moderate to high yields and with complete stereospecificity. Despite the presence of beta hydrogens in the substrate, the competitive beta-hydride elimination is not a significant side reaction when coordinating solvents are used. The reported cross-coupling involves secondary C(sp3)--C(sp2) bond formation: this is the first time that a mechanistic study has been carried out with such substrates. The reaction proceeds with inversion of configuration at the stereogenic C(sp3) carbon. The high stereospecificity of the coupling and the mildness of the reaction conditions allow for the preservation of the optical purities of reagents and products and the preparation of useful chiral targets.
