Abstract:The use of industrial and biological waste to synthesize adsorbent materials for the treatment of high fluorinated geothermal water is a cost-effective way to address the fluorine pollution problem while also reusing waste resources. In this study, modified hydroxyapatite-loaded zeolite molecular sieve composites (Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS) were synthesized using fly ash and shell as precursors, which were then cation doped and compound modified to ensure adsorption while remaining cost-effective. When the material ratio of ZMS to Al(OH) 3 -HAP was 1:6, the best adsorption material was obtained. Under the optimum adsorption conditions (dosage = 6 g/L, T = 50 °C), Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS achieved a removal rate of 92.5% and an adsorption capacity of 1.56 mg/g for 10 mg/L F − solution and can reduce the F − concentration to below the national standard concentration of 1 mg/L. The fitting of kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic data revealed that F − adsorption by Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich model, confirming that the adsorption process was primarily chemisorption and multilayer adsorption. The adsorption processes included electrostatic attraction, ion exchange between -OH and F − , complexation of fluoro-aluminum, and co-precipitation of Ca 2+ with F − . At the same time, Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS demonstrated good anti-interference performance in natural waters against co-existing ions and some heat resistance. Therefore, the composite adsorbent Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS, as an effective and environmentally friendly low-cost adsorbent, is expected to achieve the practical engineering application of geothermal water defluoridation in Guanzhong, maximizing the dual benefits of "fluoride remove" and "waste resource reuse."

Abstract:Fluoride ions were removed electrochemically from a solution using a combined electrocoagulation and electroflotation process. For an influent fluoride concentration of 15mg/l, a value after lime precipitation, the effluent fluoride concentration can be lower than 2mg/l when the pH in the coagulation cell is around 6, charge loading is at 4.97F/m3 water, and the residence time is 20min. Even lower effluent concentration can be achieved if 50mg/l of Fe3+ or Mg2+ are added into the coagulation unit. The anions generally reduce the fluoride removal efficiency except Cl− whose corrosion pitting of the electrode can result in 130% current efficiency. The composition of the sludge produced from the operation was analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscope system (ToF-SIMS). The characterization results show that the defluorination is a chemical adsorption process with F− replacing the –OH group from the Aln(OH)3n flocs.

Abstract:The high concentration of fluoride in aqueous, which exacerbated by the discharged wastewater from semiconductor, electroplating, metallurgical and ceramics industries, has gone far beyond the World Health Organization (WHO) standard and seriously affected the health of human life. This study aims to validate the deep removal of fluoride from high fluoride-containing wastewater by using an integrated precipitation/crystallization/ultrafiltration (UF)/reverse osmosis (RO) system. The system enables an extremely low residual fluoride concentration (down to 0.25 mg L−1) qualified WHO standard, which was much lower than those of other reported membrane-based processes. In particular, the application of crystallization rather than conventional coagulation/flocculation was demonstrated to be effective in reducing fluoride, turbidity and sludge water content. Membrane fouling analysis indicated that UF membrane scaling was attributed to the CaF2 particles deposition at recovery rates of 70%–90%. RO membrane fouling behaviors were identified at recovery rate of 50% (organic fouling), 70% (inorganic scaling occurred and organic fouling) and 80% (inorganic scaling and organic fouling). Meanwhile, UF/RO membrane scaling/fouling could be removed by pure water cleaning (UF) and Na2CO3/NaOH/HCl cleaning (RO). Results of this work shall provide useful information on the application of a precipitation/crystallization/UF/RO system to purify and recover high fluoride-containing wastewater.

Abstract:2-Chloro-6-fluorobenzaldehyde manufacturing wastewater in strong acidity, high-salt and high-COD, including aromatic fluoride compounds,was difficult to biodegrade through conventional methods. XDA-1 macroporous resin was used to absorb aromatic fluoride compounds, and the adsorption and desorption properties were investigated. The results showed that about 94.7% COD removal was obtained under the condition of temperature 303K, flow rate 3BV/h, and initial PH. 2-chloro-6-fluoro-benzoic acid recycle rate was about 95.7%, and up to 99.5% purity was reached. After treatment wastewater could be used for electroplating detarmish, and pollution was controlled fundamentally, while at the same time achieving the reuse of waste.

Abstract:It has been long desired but challenging to forward the advanced treatment of wastewater from empirical trials towards scientific design due to the lack of molecular insight into the pollutants of concern. Herein, we first established a systematic methodology to identify the ligands of Ni(II)-complexes in an electroless nickel (EN) plating effluent. The presence of N-containing groups in the ligands of most Ni(II)-complexes was verified by time-aligned ICP-MS and ESI-HRMS, implying the suitability of autocatalytic ozonation for efficient decomplexation. Thereby, a combined process was proposed on the basis of ozonation to achieve over 83% decomplexation of Ni(II) (initially at 0.36 mg/L), followed by selective Ni(II) sequestration for resource recovery. Combinational LC-MS systems revealed the ozonation-induced fragmentation or elimination of most Ni(II)-complexes as well as the structural change of the residual complexed molecules. The released free Ni(II) was further sequestrated by a nanocomposite of hydrated Zr(IV) oxide confined in a polymeric cation exchanger (nHZO@PCE). The fixed-bed working capacity of nHZO@PCE (∼550 BV) for the ozonated EN plating effluent was over 18 times that of the cation exchanger host (∼30 BV) at the breakthrough point of 0.10 mg Ni/L. More attractively, five adsorption-regeneration cycles demonstrated the great potential of the hybrid adsorbent for sustainable utilization. This study is believed to shed new light on how to design rational processes for advanced treatment of real wastewater based on molecular identification.
Synthesis and adsorption properties of the functional resins for deep-removal of aqueous fluoride

Abstract:In this paper,two kinds of novel resins(XAD-4-NH2 and XAD-4-N-S-Fe),aimed at deep-removal of fluoride ions,were synthesized by amination and sulfonation-amination-metal loading based on XAD-4 as matrix.The structure and properties of the resins were characterized and the adsorption characteristics of the resins were studied.The results showed that the adsorption capacity of XAD-4-NH2 could be larger than that of XAD-4-N-S-Fe in batch experiments.The pH-value could have little effect on the removal of fluorine ion for both resins.The adsorption process for fluoride ion with XAD-4-NH2 was physical adsorption while the adsorption with XAD-4-N-S-Fe was mainly chemical adsorption.The date of dynamic experiment of both resins followed the Pseudo-second-order equation.The breakthrough time of XAD-4-NH2 and XAD-4-N-S-Fe were 11h and 24h,respectively when setting 1mg/L of F-as the effluent concentration.The adsorption mechanism of fluoride ion onto XAD-4-NH2 was mainly electrostatic attraction interaction,while chemical adsorption played an important role for XAD-4-N-S-Fe.

Abstract:Many industries such as iron and steel metallurgy, copper and zinc smelting, the battery industry, and cement manufacturing industries discharge high concentrations of fluoride-containing wastewater into the environment. Subsequently, the discharge of high fluoride effluent serves as a threat to human life as well as the ecological ability to sustain life. This article analyses the advantages and drawbacks of some fluoride remediation technologies such as precipitation and flocculation, membrane technology, ion exchange technology, and adsorption technology. Among them, adsorption technology is considered the obvious choice and the best applicable technology. As such, several adsorbents with high fluoride adsorption capacity such as modified alumina, metal oxides, biomass, carbon-based materials, metal-organic frameworks, and other adsorption materials including their characteristics have been comprehensively summarized. Additionally, different adsorption conditions of the various adsorbents, such as pH, temperature, initial fluoride concentration, and contact time have been discussed in detail. The study found out that the composite synergy between different materials, morphological and structural control, and the strengthening of their functional groups can effectively improve the ability of the adsorbents for removing fluoride. This study has prospected the direction of various adsorbents for removing fluoride in wastewater, which would serve as guiding significance for future research in the field.

Abstract:2-chloro-6-fluorobenzyl and 2-chloro-6-fluorobenzaldehyde,etc.are important intermediates in pharmaceutical industry.A great deal of highly concentrated fluorine-containing aromatic hydrocarbon wastewater,which causes environmental pollution,is produced in the course of production.Macro-porous adsorptive resins have been used for treating those kinds of wastewater.The results show that the COD removing rate reaches 73.4%,when macro-porous resins LS600 and LS106 are 303 K,pH 3-6 and flow rate 5 BV/h,and the removing rates of 3-chloro-2-methyl-phenol,2-chloro-6-fluorobenzaldehyde and 2-chloro-6-fluoro-benzoic acid are higher than 98.1%.The fluorine removing capacity is 100-120 mg/L.Furthermore,the useful resources in the wastewater can be recycled effectively.

Abstract:A large amount of fluorine−containing wastewater was produced with the rapid development of the industry. Excessive fluoride content in water will not only endanger ecological security but also pose threat to human health. In this study, common new adsorbents for defluorination, such as metal−based adsorbents, natural adsorbents, and nanomaterial adsorbents were reviewed for its physicochemical properties and fluorine removal efficiency. The fluorine removal mechanism of different adsorbents was introduced in detail, and the future work of the removal of fluorine using novel adsorbents was proposed. This research also introduces the application of the coupling of the adsorption method with the technology of chemical precipitation, filtration, and super−magnetic separation to treat high concentration of fluoride wastewater. A good selection of process combinations according to different needs can achieve high−efficiency defluorination in water. Finally, some existing problems of practical operation of fluorine using removal materials in the environment are summarized, hoping to contribute to the future research of fluorine removal materials.

Abstract:Groundwater fluoride pollution is a worldwide problem that threatens human health and drinking water. Economical and efficient coagulation is the most widely used defluorination technology. The fluoride removal efficiency depends on the complexation and adsorption capacities of the hydrolyzed metal salt coagulant, so the development of new metal coagulants is the key to coagulation defluorination technology. In this study, novel polymeric zirconium salt coagulants (ZXCs) were prepared by the sol-gel method. Their capabilities in coagulation and coagulation-ultrafiltration processes were evaluated and compared with those of the traditional polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and polyferric sulfate (PFS) coagulants. ZXC exhibited more effective fluoride removal than PAC and PFS, and the fluoride removal rates of ZXC, PAC and PFS were 81.0 %, 24.7 % and 5.4 % with the optimized dosages of 0.30 mM and pHs of 5.0, 6.0 and 5.0, respectively. With an initial fluoride concentration of 4.0 mg/L, 0.30 and 1.5 mM doses of ZXC reduced the fluoride concentrations to 0.76 and 0.13 mg/L. The structures and properties of ZXC and the flocs were characterized with Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area determinations. The series characterization and hydrolysis precipitation area map showed that adsorption onto hydroxyl groups and ion exchange with surface hydroxyl groups were the main pathways for fluoride removal by ZXC. In the coagulation-ultrafiltration defluorination process, the highly polymerized ZXC was fully hydrolyzed under acidic conditions to form larger and looser flocs with almost no dissolved residue, which substantially reduced membrane fouling. This work provides new insights into the development of materials and technologies for fluoride removal from drinking water.

Abstract:For effective removal and utilization of fluorine resources from industrial wastewater, stepwise removal and recovery of fluorine were accomplished by seeding crystallization and flotation. The effects of seedings on the growth and morphology of CaF2 crystals were investigated by comparing the processes of chemical precipitation and seeding crystallization. The morphologies of the precipitates were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements. The seed crystal, fluorite, helps improve the growth of perfect CaF2 crystals. The solution and interfacial behaviors of the ions were calculated by molecular simulations. The existing perfect surface of fluorite was proven to provide the active sites for ion adhesion and formed a more ordered attachment layer than the precipitation procedure. The precipitates were then floated to recover calcium fluoride. By stepwise seeding crystallization and flotation, the products with a CaF2 purity of 64.42% can be used to replace parts of metallurgical-grade fluorite. Both removal of fluorine from wastewater and the reutilization of the fluorine resource were realized.

Experimental and DFT calculation study on the efficient removal of high fluoride wastewater from metallurgical wastewater by kaolinite

Abstract:Fluoride pollution and water scarcity are urgent issues. Reducing fluoride concentration in water is crucial. Kaolinite has been used to study adsorption and fluoride removal in water and to characterize material properties. The experimental results showed that the adsorption capacity of kaolinite decreased with increasing pH. The highest adsorption of fluoride occurred at pH 2, with a capacity of 11.1 mg/g. The fluoride removal efficiency remained high after four regeneration cycles. The fitting results with the Freundlich isotherm model and the external diffusion model showed that the non-homogeneous adsorption of kaolinite fit the adsorption behavior better. Finally, the adsorption mechanism was analyzed by FT-IR and XPS. The binding energies of various adsorption sites and the chemical adsorption properties of atomic states were discussed in relation to DFT calculations. The results showed that Al and H sites were the main binding sites, and the bonding stability for different forms of fluoride varies, with the size of Al-F (-7.498 eV) > H-F (-6.04 eV) > H-HF (-3.439 eV) > Al-HF (-3.283 eV). Furthermore, the density of states and Mulliken charge distribution revealed that the 2p orbital of F was found to be active in the adsorption process and was the main orbital for charge transfer.

Abstract:Groundwater containing high concentration of fluoride has made great concern in China. Many researchers are eager to look for an applicable method for fluoride removal. Adsorption process is broadly recognized as a low-cost, high-efficient and environmental-friendly technology. In this research, a novel adsorbent prepared by aluminum sulfate modified chitosan/zeolite molecular sieve (AC-Z) composites was used to remove fluoride from synthetic solutions. The fluoride adsorption performance of AC-Z adsorbents was investigated by factors of dose (0.5–7 mg/100 mL), contact time (0.5–12.0 h), temperature (10°C–35°C), solution pH (3–11), initial fluoride concentration (5.0–50.0 mg/L) and co-existing anions (Cl–, CO3 2–, SO4 2–) in series of batch experiments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Brunauer–Emmett– Teller and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyze the structure and morphology of the AC-Z adsorbents. The AC-Z adsorbents with fluoride removal efficiency of 93.1% were processed under conditions of initial concentration 10 mg/L, dose 2 g/100 mL, contact time 8 h, pH value 7 and temperature 20°C. The kinetic studies indicated that fluoride adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics well (R 2 = 0.999), and adsorption isotherms can be well described by Freundlich model (R 2 = 0.988). Thermodynamic studies showed the fluoride adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. The results of this preliminary study indicated that AC-Z was a potential and efficient treatment option for groundwater with fluoride pollution.

Abstract:The rapid development of industries such as new energy and photovoltaic has led to the generation of a large amount of industrial fluorine wastewater, posing serious threats to water environment and human health. To address this issue, MOF-808 adsorbent was synthesized by controlling the synthesis conditions and modifying the ligand structure. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted by varying experimental conditions, including type of adsorbent, pH, wastewater concentration, adsorption time, temperature, and interfering anions. The adsorption behavior of MOF-808-AA towards fluoride ions was well fitted by the Elovich non-linear kinetic model, as well as the Freundlich and Temkin non-linear isotherm models, indicating that the adsorption behavior was influenced by multiple mechanisms other than just intraparticle diffusion. Thermodynamic results suggested a spontaneous exothermic monolayer chemical adsorption process. Under the conditions of pH 6.0 and T = 298 K, MOF-808-AA exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 84.65 mg/g for fluoride ions. Characterization techniques, as well as quantum chemical analysis was employed to analyze the adsorption behavior and predict the reaction sites. The potential mechanism can be summarized as the formation of new bonds between MOF-808-AA and the adsorbed fluoride ions, as well as the weak intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding and vdW forces. Furthermore, MOF-808-AA demonstrated satisfactory reusability and excellent chemical stability during the cyclic process. These findings suggest the potential application of MOF-808-AA for removing fluoride ions from wastewater.

Abstract:Solvent extraction (SX) has been recognized as an efficient approach for the large-scale removal of impurities, demonstrating considerable potential for fluoride extraction in industrial applications. However, existing fluoride extraction methods typically require the incorporation of additives to form complexes with fluoride for its removal. Due to the excessive additive requirements for efficient fluoride removal, these methods inevitably result in secondary contamination of feed solution, necessitating additional purification efforts to remove them. In this study, four extractants (trioctyl amine, tributyl phosphate, trioctyl phosphate, and trialkyl phosphine oxide (TRPO)) were investigated for fluoride removal via hydrogen bonding with hydrofluoric acid (HF). Various parameters, including the concentrations of extractants and stripping agents, pH values, extraction time, and temperature were initially optimized. It was found that TRPO exhibits the highest extraction efficiency for HF, with a single-stage extraction rate exceeding 70 %. Complete fluoride removal (> 99.9 %) was achieved through a consecutive four-stage extraction process. Further experiments, including maximum loading and slope analysis, combined with FT-IR and 19 F NMR characterization, and DFT calculations elucidate the mechanism of the extraction. The transfer of HF into the organic phase is accomplished by the formation of a 1:1 hydrogen-bonded complex with TRPO. The loaded fluoride in the organic phase can be easily stripped by a base to get a fluoride salt. This study paves the way for the construction of novel SX systems to remove fluoride as HF.

Abstract:The application of anion exchange resins (AERs) has been limited by the critical problem of resin fouling, which increases the volume of the desorption concentrate and decreases treatment efficiency. To date, resin fouling has not been well studied and is poorly understood compared to membrane fouling. To reflect the resin fouling level, a resin fouling index (RFI) was established in this work according to the decrease of DOC removal after regeneration of the resin for the advanced treatment of municipal wastewater. Comparing the linear fitting results between the RFI and the fluorescence intensity indicated that the resin fouling was related to the protein-like substances with fluorescence peak T in the region of excitation wavelength <250 nm and emission wavelength <380 nm. Using their fluorescent characteristics as a label, the protein-like substances causing the fouling were further identified as hydrophilic components with molecular weights greater than 6500 Da.
Efficient defluoridation of water by utilizing nanosized Ce-Fe bimetal oxyhydroxides encapsulated inside porous polystyrene anion exchanger

Abstract:Fluoride contamination is a serious problem of global concern, and water decontamination from fluoride remains an imperative but also a challenging task. Recently, Ce-Fe bimetal oxyhydroxides (CFBOs) nanoparticles of sufficient hydroxyl group and high reactivity have exhibited unique advantages for specific fluoride elimination. Unfortunately, they are difficult to apply directly in scale-up water treatment due to their ultrafine nature. Herein, we fabricated a novel polymer-based Ce-Fe bimetal oxyhydroxides nanocomposite, i.e., , by co-precipitation of Ce/Fe oxides nanoparticles inside a porous polystyrene anion exchanger D201. The material characterization results confirmed that CFBOs were successfully immobilized inside the pores of D201 with nanoscale and micro crystalline nature, and the shielding effect of the host D201 significantly improved the chemical stability of CFBOs against pH variation (3–12). As compared with cerium and ferric (hydr)oxides nanocomposites ( and ) and its host D201, exhibited superior capacity and better selectivity for fluoride adsorption. Thanks to the inner-sphere complexation between immobilized CFBOs and fluoride, the concomitant competing anions exerted negligible effect on the defluoridation efficiency of Fluoride uptake onto agreed well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, and the calculated maximum adsorption capacity was 65.99 mg/g. The exhausted could be efficiently regenerated by a simple alkaline treatment for cyclic utilization with constant defluorination performance. Fixed-bed assays demonstrated that the encapsulating of CFBOs nanoparticles enhanced the effective treatment capacity of by 10–12 times over the host D201 irrespective of whether synthetic wastewater or mine drainage was the feeding solution. The above results verified that is a new kind of efficient defluoridation adsorbent with practical application prospect.

Abstract:A batch fluidized bed reactor (BFBR) with modified biosynthetic crystals (MBC), derived from Pseudomonas sp. HXF1, was investigated for the treatment of the groundwater containing fluoride (F−). Impacts of different hydraulic retention time (HRT), pH, and initial F− concentration on F− removal were examined and the maximum defluorination efficiency was recorded as 95.20%. Moreover, recycling experiments were performed to evaluate the stability of repeated use. BFBR/MBC system showed a long-term effective treatment outcome with low fluctuation in the concentrations of residual Ca2+ and F−. The formed precipitates were characterized by SEM, XPS, XRD, and FTIR. The defluorination mechanisms of BFBR/MBC system were defined as the chemisorption and induced crystallization of Ca5(PO4)3F on the MBC surface. As a feasible, economical, and environment-friendly technique, the method has a long-term value, which suggests promising applications in F− removal and resourceful treatment.

Abstract:In this study, an adsorption-ultrafiltration process was adopted for fluoride removal from drinking water. Experiments were carried out at constant current conditions, focusing on the effect of the particle size, aeration and recycling flux on the fluoride removal and membrane fouling. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of powder activated alumina was greatly improved compared to the granular one. With flux at 150 mL/min, backwashing cycle of 6 h, backwashing time of 2 min, backwashing flow at 150 mL/min, raw fluoride mass concentration of 2 mg/Ｌ, activated alumina dosage of 0.1 g/Ｌ, activated alumina particle size of 0.050-0.074 mm, no aeration, and a reflux ratio between precipitation and reaction section of 0.5, a better result of fluoride removal and effective control of the membrane fouling could be achieved. Under these conditions, the system could operate stably for a certain period of time.

Abstract:A combined electrocoagulation (EC) and electroflotation (EF) process was proposed to remove fluoride from drinking water. Its efficacy was investigated under different conditions. Experimental results showed that the combined process could remove fluoride effectively. The total hydraulic retention time required was only 30min. After treatment, the fluoride concentration was reduced from initial 4.0–6.0mg/L to lower than 1.0mg/L. The influent pH value was found to be a very important variable that affected fluoride removal significantly. The optimal influent pH range is 6.0–7.0 at which not only can effective defluoridation be achieved, but also no pH readjustment is needed after treatment. In addition, it was found that SO42− had negative effect; Ca2+ had positive effect; while Cl− had little effect on the fluoride removal. The EC charge loading, EF charge loading and energy consumption were 3.0Faradays/m3, 1.5Faradays/m3, and 1.2kWh/m3, respectively, under typical conditions where fluoride was reduced from initial 4.0 to 0.87mg/L.
