Abstract:In the past few years, there has been significant progress in the communications and computer technology, which requires stable, clear video image display. On the other hand, conventional analog video processing method, due to its intrinsic limitations, can not meet the requirement of high quality and high speed operation. Meanwhile, the digital video processing technique that integrates with the computer technology is growing rapidly. In this paper, we introduce the art of FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) that has been widely used for video signal processing, and develop the video signal acquisition and processing system that based on FPGA, thereby achieve real-time video signal acquiring, processing, and transferring.

Abstract:A design and implementation method of H.264/AVC encoder based on mixed structure is introduced,in which DSP is used as a main processor and FPGA as an assistant processor to accelerate arithmetic by hardware. In order to meet required real-time performance,hardware engine is designed for the most complicated and time-consuming module. According to the engine,it constitutes a software and hardware communication agreement,which makes control and data transporting easily,and realizes the real-time performances which H.264/AVC D1 coder needs.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems that the image processing system in the field of machine vision has high real-time requirement,and the traditional FPGA design needs long development cycle,but high level synthesis (HLS) provides a new way to accelerate the machine vision algorithm.Based on ZC706 development Platform and SDSoC development environment of Xilinx,this paper uses some optimization methods such as pipeline,loop unrolling,parallelism,line buffer and window buffer co-processing to realize hardware acceleration of the Sobel edge detection and Harris corner detection algorithm,which are widely used in the machine vision field.The experimental results show that the speed-up ratios of FPGA implementation based on HLS method for Sobel and Harris can reach 7.37 and 19.41,respectively,compared with software implementation in ARM platform.It can meet the requirements of real-time performance in the field of machine vision.

Abstract:In modern wireless communication systems, the adaptive digital predistortion (DPD) is widely used to compensate for the nonlinearity in the radio front-end. In the DPD implementation, the conventional coefficient estimation algorithm is computationally intensive and prevents the application of complex DPD models. In [1], we have derived an efficient coefficients estimation algorithm based on orthonormal basis functions that achieves the low computational complexity while maintaining the estimation accuracy. In this paper, we focus on the implementation of this efficient coefficients estimation algorithm on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform. Compared with the conventional recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm, the low complexity algorithm can achieve the same linearization performance while saving about 80% hardware resources.

Abstract:In this work, we implement a complete probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) architecture on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) platform to study the interplay between probabilistic shaping (PS) and forward error correction (FEC). Due to the fully parallelized inputoutput interfaces based on look up table (LUT) and low computational complexity without high-precision multiplication, hierarchical distribution matching (HiDM) is chosen as the solution for real time probabilistic shaping. In terms of FEC, we select two kinds of the mainstream soft decision-forward error correction (SD-FEC) algorithms currently used in optical communication system, namely Open FEC (OFEC) and soft-decision quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (SD-QC-LDPC) codes. Through FPGA experimental investigation, we studied the impact of probabilistic shaping on OFEC and LDPC, respectively, based on PS-16QAM under moderate shaping, and also the impact of probabilistic shaping on LDPC code based on PS-64QAM under weakstrong shaping. The FPGA experimental results show that if pre-FEC bit error rate (BER) is used as the predictor, moderate shaping induces no degradation on the OFEC performance, while strong shaping slightly degrades the error correction performance of LDPC. Nevertheless, there is no error floor when the output BER is around 10-15. However, if normalized generalized mutual information (NGMI) is selected as the predictor, the performance degradation of LDPC will become insignificant, which means pre-FEC BER may not a good predictor for LDPC in probabilistic shaping scenario. We also studied the impact of residual errors after FEC decoding on HiDM. The FPGA experimental results show that the increased BER after HiDM decoding is within 10 times compared to post-FEC BER.

High Performance Deformable Part Model Accelerator Based on Fpga

Abstract:Deformable Part Model (DPM) is one of the best algorithms for image-based object detection. However, the high computation intensity leads to relatively long detecting time. Even with the powerful CPU or GPU computing system, it is still too slow for practical applications. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a high performance DPM accelerator based on FPGA, where a dedicated JPEG decoder is integrated to process the images with the 1080p JPEG format. Pipelined architecture and data reuse strategies are developed to achieve the high throughput and energy efficiency. The proposed accelerator can process input images with 22 fps at the frequency of 156MHz on Xilinx VC709 board, which outperforms previous approaches.

Abstract:Depth estimation is a common task in stereo vision system and usually requires a high computational effort. High resolution images offer more details compared to low resolution images and high resolution depth maps are necessary to provide a good image quality on autostereoscopic displays which deliver stereo content without the need for 3D glasses. In this paper, a FPGA architecture for depth estimation is proposed, that is capable of processing full HD content with processing speed of 125fps and a disparity search range of 240 pixels. The resulting architecture is efficient in terms of power consumption and overall performance improvement.
Efficient FPGA Implementation of a Digital Predistorter for Power Amplifier Linearization

Abstract:This paper presents a fixed point design and implementation of a low-complexity high-throughput digital predistorter (DPD) on FPGA. Based on the memory polynomial model, a parallel structure is proposed for the implementation of the DPD and the effects of the fixed-point implementation on the performance are analyzed employing fidelity metrics such as modulation error ratio and adjacent channel power ratio. According to this analysis, an optimized fixed-point hardware implementation of the proposed DPD with proper word lengths is presented. Besides some simplifications to the proposed structure, a number of effective modifications are proposed for clock enhancement. The improved clock frequency of the proposed implementation makes it a fit choice for application over communication signals with considerable bandwidth. The required hardware and the maximum clock rate corresponding to these modifications are evaluated and reported. The performance of the proposed DPD in linearization of an actual power amplifier (PA) is also experimentally evaluated, through application of an appropriate hardware setup. Experimental results show about 11 dB ACPR improvement in the PA output for a 128-QAM test signal. The moderate hardware resource requirement of the proposed high-throughput DPD is also verified through comparison with some remarkable works in the same area.

A High-Throughput QC-LDPC Encoder

Abstract:Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes have been widely used in communication and storage fields to support high reliability of data channel. Quasi-cyclic (QC)-LDPC as a regular code can sufficiently exploit hardware parallelism of Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to accelerate the encoding/decoding performance. However, existing FPGA encoders are generally dedicated to a specialized LDPC code and hardware platform with limited flexibility. In this paper, to achieve high throughput and flexibility simultaneously, we propose a High-level synthesis (HLS) based QC-LDPC encoder microarchitecture. The encoder designs a fine-grained partially-parallel iterative process execution to exploit intra-codeword parallelism by fully leveraging capability of HLS. The proposed encoder further optimizes data-layout and HLS-function implementation. The encoding throughput of the proposed encoder achieves 98.4Gbps higher than the state-of-the-art QC-LDPC encoder by up to 14.75x.

Abstract:Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the key modulations for current and novel broadband communications standards. For example, Multi-band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) is an excellent choice for the ECMA-368 Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless communication standard. Nevertheless, the high Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) of MB-OFDM UWB signals reduces the power efficiency of the key element in mobile devices, the High Power Amplifier (HPA), due to non-linear distortion, known as the non-linear saturation of the HPA. In order to deal with this limiting problem, a new and efficient pre-distorter scheme using a Neural Networks (NN) is proposed and also implemented on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). This solution based on the pre-distortion concept of HPA non-linearities offers a good trade-off between complexity and performance. Some tests and validation have been conducted on the two types of HPA: Travelling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTA) and Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPA). The results show that the proposed pre-distorter design presents low complexity and low error rate. Indeed, the implemented architecture uses 10% of DSP (Digital Signal Processing) blocks and 1% of LUTs (Look up Table) in case of SSPA, whereas it only uses 1% of LUTs in case of TWTA. In addition, it allows us to conclude that advanced machine learning techniques can be efficiently implemented in hardware with the adequate design.

A Low Dead Time, Resource Efficient Encoding Method for FPGA Based High-Resolution TDL TDCs

Abstract:This paper presents a novel encoding method for fine time data of a tapped delay line (TDL) time-to-digital Converter (TDC). It is based on divide-and-conquer strategy, and has the advantage of significantly reducing logic resource utilization while retaining low dead-time performance. Furthermore, the problem of high bubble depth in advanced devices can be resolved with this method. Four examples are demonstrated, which were implemented in a Xilinx Artix-7 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device, and encoding method presented in this paper was employed to encode fine time data for normal TDL TDC, a half-length delay line TDC, and double-edge and four-edge wave union TDCs. Compared with TDCs from the latest published papers that adopt traditional encoders, the logic utilization of TDCs in this paper were reduced by a factor of 45% to 70% in different situations, while the encoding dead time can be restricted in one clock cycle. Acceptable resolutions of the demonstrated TDCs were also obtained, proving the functionality of the encoding method.

Abstract:This paper proposes a parallel cyclic shift structure of address decoder to realize a high-throughput encoding and decoding method for irregular-quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check（IR-QC-LDPC） codes, with a dual-diagonal parity structure. A normalized min-sum algorithm（NMSA） is employed for decoding.The whole verification of the encoding and decoding algorithm is simulated with Matlab, and the code rates of 5/6 and 2/3 are selected respectively for the initial bit error ratio as 6% and 1.04%.Based on the results of simulation, multi-code rates are compatible with different basis matrices. Then the simulated algorithms of encoder and decoder are migrated and implemented on the field programmable gate array（FPGA）. The 183.36 Mbps throughput of encoder and the average 27.85 Mbps decoding throughput with the initial bit error ratio 6% are realized based on FPGA.

Abstract:This paper gives a detailed introduction to the FPGA implementation of Full Parallel Low-Density Parity-Check(LDPC) Encoder, which is designed base on Richardson-Urbanke Algorithm with a code length 4096, code rate 4/5 on CCSDS standard. The proposed design use LUTs to solve matrix multiplication with low-complexity, the encode result can output in 4 clocks, the speed of the encoder can be higher than 6.4 Gbps, and the resource utilization is acceptable.

Abstract:Probabilistic Neural Network has been considered as providing superior performance for neural decoding. However, the huge computation burden costs high resource in FPGA, which limits its scalability. In this paper, an improved FPGA implementation of Probabilistic Neural Network for neural decoding is developed and evaluated on the Xilinx Virtex-5 platform. The proposed implementation reduces the resource utilization, and enhances the scalability of the FPGA implementation of the Probabilistic Neural Network greatly.

Abstract:With the development of wireless video technology and embedded technology, a dedicated digital signal processor (DSP) can achieve the video transmission stably and flexibly. Some existing wireless video transmission algorithms do not perform well in response to complex channel environments. A pseudo-analog video algorithm that can be run in a dedicated instruction set was proposed. At the transmitter, the image data which are removed spatially redundant are divided into L-shaped blocks for power allocation, and the digital signal are sent to CRC and Turbo coding. Finally, the modulated digital signal and the pseudo-analog data after power allocation are sent to framing. The receiver includes channel estimation and de-framing, recovers digital signal and pseudo-analog signal through error detection and decoding. We have optimized the algorithm at the assembly level, so that the entire system is more flexible. The entire transfer system will run on the FPGA and hardware DSP boards for debugging.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel approach to the flexible scales of Haar wavelet transform in FPGAs is proposed, which could be achieved by only a single parallel dynamic distributed arithmetic (PDDA) FIR architecture with some pipelining registers. In addition, floating-point system is adopted to provide higher resolution over a large dynamic range. Furthermore, the scheme is mapped into a Xilinx Virtex5 FPGA chip. The synthesis results demonstrate it performs faster and consumes less resource under the same precision compared with conventional methods.

Abstract:In recent years deep learning algorithms have shown extremely high performance on machine learning tasks such as image classification and speech recognition. In support of such applications, various FPGA accelerator architectures have been proposed for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that enable high performance for classification tasks at lower power than CPU and GPU processors. However, to date, there has been little research on the use of FPGA implementations of deconvolutional neural networks (DCNNs). DCNNs, also known as generative CNNs, encode high-dimensional probability distributions and have been widely used for computer vision applications such as scene completion, scene segmentation, image creation, image denoising, and super-resolution imaging. We propose an FPGA architecture for deconvolutional networks built around an accelerator which effectively handles the complex memory access patterns needed to perform strided deconvolutions, and that supports convolution as well. We also develop a three-step design optimization method that systematically exploits statistical analysis, design space exploration and VLSI optimization. To verify our FPGA deconvolutional accelerator design methodology we train DCNNs offline on two representative datasets using the generative adversarial network method (GAN) run on Tensorflow, and then map these DCNNs to an FPGA DCNN-plus-accelerator implementation to perform generative inference on a Xilinx Zynq-7000 FPGA. Our DCNN implementation achieves a peak performance density of 0.012 GOPs/DSP.
Implementation of intra prediction in H.264 based on a novel design methodology

Abstract:A novel IC design methodology, named Operator Methodology (OM), is proposed in this paper and has been applied to intra prediction of H.264 entropy coding, satisfying the need of 1080P@30pfs performance. This new methodology will map the high-level language, such as C programming language, to verilog HDL through a special middle language, using a series of analysis processes like time-noting and optimization. The implementation of intra prediction in H.264 by OM, which is verified to work at 100MHZ in a Xilinx Virtex6 FPGA and 0.13um SMIC CMOS technology at 167MHz frequency, shows that OM can speed up IC design effectively and obtain comparable performance with other ASIC results. Finally, our design cycle, measured by man-month, will be decreased by a large scale using auto-translator and auto-optimizer.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient VLSI architecture for H.264/AVC Content-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Code (CABAC) decoding. We introduce several new techniques to maximize the parallelism of the decoding process, including variable-bin-rate strategy, multiple-bin arithmetic decoding and efficient probability propagation scheme. The CABAC engine can ensure the real-time decoding for H.264/AVC main profile HD level 4.0. Synthesis results show that the multi-bin decoder can be operated up to 45MHz, and the total logic area is only 42K gates when targeted at TSMC’s 0.18um process.
