Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the bonding effectiveness of the universal adhesive on caries-affected dentin and normal dentin of deciduous teeth. We collected 12 extracted second deciduous molars with adjacent caries on one side. Each tooth was divided into two parts: the carious half was grouped into the caries-affected (CAD) group, whereas the other half was allocated to the normal dentin (ND) group. In the CAD group, carious tissue was removed using a slow-speed ball drill under the indication of the caries maker. In the ND group, dentin was prepared to the similarly deep level. The Single Bond Universal adhesive system using self-etch strategies was applied following the manufacturer's instructions. The defective area was filled with a resin composite Shofu Beautifil II Namer. Electron microscope observation indicated that CAD was partially demineralised and the surface was rougher than ND after acid etching. Transmission electron microscopy images of CAD showed that the hydroxyapatite platelets were distributed sparsely in strips, whereas normal dentin was intact. There was no significant difference between the CAD group and ND group in microtensile bonding strength and failure mode analysis (P > 0.05). What's more, the morphology of hybrid layer was similar in two groups. In conclusion, caries-affected deciduous tooth dentin can achieve similar bonding strength to normal dentin with the application of Single Bond Universal adhesive.
Effect of Captopril Pretreatment on the Dentin Bonding Durability of Self-Etch Adhesive.

Abstract:To investigate the effect of captopril on the dentin bonding durability of self-etch adhesive. Different concentrations of captopril ethanol solutions or captopril ethanol/water solutions were prepared to pretreat dentin as primer for the self-etch adhesives. The surface morphology of the dentin was observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on the morphology analysis, the pretreatment condition was selected and two self-etch adhesives were employed to evaluate the improvement effect of the captopril pretreatment on the dentin bonding durability. : SEM showed that the pretreatment of captopril ethanol solutions and captopril ethanol/water solutions were able to remove the smear lay and partially expose collagen matrix. According to the SEM results, the pretreating condition of captopril ethanol/water solution with the pretreating time of was selected for further dentin bonding study. For Clearfil SEBOND system, the immediate bonding strength increased from to (<0.05). After one-year aging, the bonding strength of the control group decreased markedly [(22.90±6.82) MPa, <0.05]; while the bonding strength of the captopril pretreated group kept steadily >0.05]. For Clearfil S BOND system, there was no significant difference in the immediate bonding strength between the experimental group [(4.07) MPa] and the control group[(4.11) MPa]. But after one-year aging, the bonding strength of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group <0.05]. : The pretreatment with captopril ethanol/water solution increases the dentin bonding strength of the self-etch adhesive systems and also improves the bonding durability.
Reconstruction of a Demineralized Dentin Matrix Via Rapid Deposition of CaF2 Nanoparticles in Situ Promotes Dentin Bonding.

Abstract:Dentin bonding based on a wet-bonding technique is the fundamental technique used daily in clinics for tooth-restoration fixation and clinical treatment of tooth-related diseases. Limited bonding durability led by insufficient adhesive infiltration in the demineralized dentin (DD) matrix is the biggest concern in contemporary adhesive dentistry. This study proposes that the highly hydrated noncollagenous protein (NCP)-formed interfacial microenvironment of the DD matrix is the root cause of this problem. Meanwhile, the endogenous phosphate groups of the NCPs are used as pseudonuclei to rapidly induce the formation of amorphous CaF2 nanoparticles in situ in the interfacial microenvironment. The DD matrix is thus reconstructed into a novel porous structure. It markedly facilitates the infiltration of dentin adhesives in the DD matrix and also endows the DD matrix with anticollapsing capability when water evaporates. Whether using a wet-bonding or air-drying mode, the bonding effectiveness is greatly promoted, with the 12 month bonding strength being about twice that of the corresponding control groups. This suggests that the nanoreinforced DD matrix eliminates the dependence of bonding effectiveness on the moisture status of the DD surface controlled only by experiences of dentists. Consequently, this bonding strategy not only greatly improves bonding durability but also overcomes the technical sensitivity of bonding operations of the total-etched bonding pattern. This exhibits the potential to promote dentin bonding and is of great significance to dentistry.
The influence of caries-affected dentin on bonding effect of deciduous teeth

Abstract:Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of caries-affected dentin on bonding effect of deciduous teeth, in turn to provide guidance for caries removal strategy of deciduous tooth caries before bonding. Methods Extracted second deciduous molars with one adjacent surface carious were collected. For the Group test, carious tissue was removed with slow speed ball drill under the indication of caries indicator. For the Group control, at the other side of the occlusal surface sound dentin was prepared to the similar deep level. Single bond Universal was applied according to the manufacture’s instructions. The defective part was filled with Shofu Beautifil II Namer, a commonly used resin composite in pediatric dentistry. Vertical sticks were obtained and subjected to tensile stress test. The morphology of the bonding surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscopy. Results Electron microscope observation showed that there was no significant difference in morphology between caries-affected dentin and normal dentin. The minerals and smear layer were removed after acid etching, and the collagen network of dentin tubules and intertubular dentin was exposed. The surface of caries-affected dentin was relatively rough and partially decomposed. TEM images of the caries-affected deciduous tooth dentin showed that the hydroxyapatite was sparsely distributed in strips. In normal dentin, hydroxyapatite was thicker and denser. The acidic environment produced by the bacteria demineralized the dentin part, which corresponded to the surface morphology of the caries-affected dentin as seen by SEM. There was no significant difference in the micro-tensile strengths between Group test and Group control (P > 0.05). Conclusion In vitro, caries-affected deciduous tooth dentin could achieve similar bonding strength to normal tooth dentin when Single Bond Universal adhesive was applied. The results of this study may provide theoretical basis for partial caries removal strategy of deciduous tooth caries treatment.
Effect of 4-(Methymercapto) Benzaldehyde (MTAD) Pretreatment on Microtensile Bond Strengths of Two Resin Cements on Dentin Surface

Abstract:The aim of this study, as pretreated by MTAD, is to evaluate the resin adhesive strength. Samples were divided four groups: untreated dentin, dentin surface treated with tri-steamed water, dentin surface treated with phosphoric acid, dentin surface treated with EDTA, and dentin surface treated with MTAD. These were then glued to the pulp using two resins: Panavia F 2.0 and Relyx Unicem. This setup was is placed in water and divided and then It subjected to SEM characterization. The binding strength of MTAD-treated teeth was higher than that of the other three groups. After MTAD treatment, the adhesive force of the two resins on the tooth surface was greatly enhanced.
Effect of Crosslinked Chitosan Nanoparticles on the Bonding Quality of Fiber Posts in Root Canals.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To investigate the effects of root-canal dentin pretreatment with the crosslinker EDC combined with chitosan nanoparticles (Csnp) on the bonding quality of fiber posts in root canals in terms of bond strength, nanoleakage, quantification of collagen degradation, and degree of conversion (DC) of adhesive.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Forty-eight single-rooted teeth were prepared endodontically and etched using UNI-ETCH (Bisco) as per the adhesive procedure for fiber posts. They were randomly divided into three groups before adhesive (All-Bond 3) application, according to different pretreatments: a. immersed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde for 24 h; b. treated with Csnp solution under ultrasonic agitation for 60 s and immersed in EDC crosslinker for 24 h; c. without treatment (control). Bond strength, nanoleakage, DC within the interface, and collagen fiber degradation were evaluated.RESULTS:The pretreatments had a significant influence on the bonding stability of fiber posts in root canals, but not on the degree of conversion (p = 0.552). Enzymatic degradation significantly influenced bond strength for all groups (p = 0.001), with the greatest effect found in group c. The amount of amino acids released from the adhesive interface differed significantly between groups after hydrolysis and enzymatic degradation (p = 0.000); group c released the highest amount of amino acids.CONCLUSIONS:Csnp binding to dentin in combination with EDC reduced degradation of dentinal collagen and improved the stability of the adhesive interface without jeopardizing adhesive polymerization.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the effect of chemical removal or mechanical modification of the smear layer on dentin adhesion with universal adhesives. Dentin surfaces (92 teeth in total) were burnished using 320-grit silicon carbide abrasive paper, and further divided into four groups: control (Con, no treatment), phosphoric acid etching (Etc, chemical removal of smear layer), polishing with 800-grit silicon carbide abrasive paper, and ultrasonic cleaning (Pol and Ult, mechanical modification of smear layer). The scanning electron microscope was used to observe the dentin surface. Two universal resin adhesives with 'mild' self-etching (Clearfil universal bond quick, pH = 2.3) and 'ultra-mild' self-etching (All bond universal, pH = 3.2) were used. Resin-dentin bonding interface was observed by the confocal laser scanning microscope. The micro-tensile bond test (n = 20) was performed to evaluate the bond strength before and after 10,000 times thermal cycles. Failure mode was evaluated by stereomicroscope. Three-way ANOVA was used to analyze the effect of different smear layer treatments, adhesives, and thermal aging on & mu;TBS. Smear layer treatment, adhesive, and thermal aging all had a significant effect on bond strength. Pol and Ult groups of two adhesives had no difference in bond durability, which were significantly higher than Etc and Con groups. Etc and Con groups of 'mild' adhesive had better bond durability than that of 'ultra-mild' adhesive. After 24 h storage, the & mu;TBS of 'mild' adhesive in the Ult group was the highest (44.39 & PLUSMN; 10.71 MPa), so as after thermal cycles (41.53 & PLUSMN; 13.29 MPa). However, the & mu;TBS of 'ultra-mild' in the Etc group was the lowest (16.70 & PLUSMN; 4.72 MPa) among all groups. After thermal cycles, it also showed the lowest & mu;TBS (12.83 & PLUSMN; 6.75 MPa) as well. The mechanical modification of the smear layer could lead to more efficient dentin adhesion with universal resin adhesives.
Bonding Performance of Universal Adhesives Applied to Nano-Hydroxyapatite Desensitized Dentin Using Etch-and-Rinse or Self-Etch Mode

Abstract:The study assessed the bonding performance of three universal adhesives on desensitized dentin with etch-and-rinse mode or self-etch mode after nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp)-based desensitizers application. Simulated sensitive dentin specimens were prepared and separated into four groups: no treatment as the negative control, groups desensitized by Biorepair toothpaste, Dontodent toothpaste, or nHAp paste. Three universal adhesives of All-Bond Universal, Single Bond Universal, and Clearfil Universal Bond with etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode were bonded to the desensitized dentin specimens separately, followed by resin composite build-ups. Micro-tensile bond strength was measured using a micro-tensile tester. The wettability of desensitized dentin was evaluated by the contact angle of the adhesives. Resin infiltration was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Dentin tubular occlusion and nanoleakage were observed by scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode of each adhesive showed similar bond strength when bonding to nHAp-based desensitized dentin. The dentin surface was partially covered by desensitizers after desensitization. Compared with the self-etch mode, stronger demineralization and more reopened dentin tubules were observed in the etch-and-rinse mode after acid etching; longer resin tags and more nanoleakage in the resin–dentin interface were observed when using the etch-and-rinse mode. When bonding to nHAp-based desensitized dentin with universal adhesives, no significant difference in bond strength was found between self-etch mode or etch-and-rinse mode; while the latter produced more nanoleakage in the resin–dentin interfaces.

Bonding Quality of Etch-and-Rinse Adhesives in Root Canals Upon Different Pretreatments.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To evaluate the effect of ethanol-wet/hydrophobic resin bonding (EWB) in a simplified dehydration protocol with ultrasonic agitation (UA) of etch-and-rinse adhesives on the bonding quality in root canals.MATERIALS AND METHODS:56 extracted human maxillary central incisors were divided into 4 groups (n = 14) according to the procedures of bonding fiber posts in root canals: A: conventional etch-and-rinse adhesive as control (All-Bond 3, Bisco); B: EWB in a simplified dehydration protocol, ie, after 100% ethanol dehydration (30 s, 3 times), ethanol/hydrophobic resin (50% bis-GMA + TEG-DMA, 50% ethanol) was applied into the root canal as a primer, followed by applying pure co-monomer adhesive; C: EWB in a standard dehydration protocol, ie, ascending concentrations of ethanol (50%, 70%, 80%, 90%) for 30 s and 100% ethanol (30 s, 3 times) for dehydration, with the remaining procedure conducted as in group B; D: EWB in a simplified dehydration protocol under ultrasonic agitation (UA), ie, 100% ethanol under ultrasonic agitation for 30 s, ethanol/hydrophobic resin as a primer applied under UA for 60 s, followed by the application of pure co-monomer adhesive. All the specimens were cemented with Duo-Link (Bisco) and immersed in artificial saliva for 24 h or thermocycled for 10,000 times. Bond strength, failure mode, and nanoleakage were evaluated. Hybrid layer and resin tags were also observed with SEM. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA (bond strength) and Kruskal-Wallis analysis (nanoleakage, resin tag score) (α = 0.05).RESULTS:Significant differences existed in bond strength (p = 0.02) and nanoleakage (p = 0.02) among groups. After 24 h and after thermocycling, group D exhibited higher bond strengths than did group B (p = 0.02 after 24 h, p = 0.03 after aging) and group A (p = 0.06 after 24 h, p = 0.04 after aging). Bond strength and nanoleakage showed no significant difference after aging (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in resin tag scores between any of the groups, but the apical third of the roots exhibited the lowest score (p = 0.001).CONCLUSION:The synergistic effects of the two pretreatment strategies (EWB in a simplified dehydration protocol and UA) improved the bonding quality. UA had a positive effect on the adhesion of the etch-and-rinse adhesives, when EWB in a simplified procedure was applied into the root canal.
Bond Strength, Microleakage, Microgaps, and Marginal Adaptation of Self-adhesive Resin Composites to Tooth Substrates with and without Preconditioning with Universal Adhesives

Abstract:Purpose: This study investigated and compared the bond strengths, microleakage, microgaps, and marginal adaptation of self-adhesive resin composites (SAC) to dentin with or without universal adhesives. Materials and methods: Dentin surfaces of 75 molars were prepared for shear and microtensile bond strength testing (SBS and µTBS). Silicon molds were used to build up direct restorations using the following materials to form 5 groups: 1. Surefil One; 2. Prime&Bond active Universal Adhesive + Surefil One; 3. Vertise Flow; 4. OptiBond Universal + Vertise Flow; 5. Scotchbond Universal + Filtek Z500 (control group). Bonded specimens were thermocycled 10,000x before being tested either for SBS or µTBS using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Direct mesial and distal class-II cavities were created on 100 sound premolars, with the gingival margin of distal cavities placed below CEJ and restored according to the five groups. After thermocycling, microleakage scores were assessed following immersion of restored premolars in 2% methylene blue dye for 24 h, while marginal gaps and adaptation percentages were investigated on epoxy resin replicas under SEM at magnifications of 2000X and 200X, respectively. Results were statistically analyzed with parametric and non-parametric tests as applicable, with a level of significance set at α = 0.05. Results: Bond strengths, microleakage scores, microgaps, and percent marginal adaptation of Surefil One and Vertise Flow were significantly (p < 0.001) inferior to the control group. Dentin preconditioning with universal adhesives significantly increased the study parameter outcomes of Surefil One and Vertise Flow, yet they were still significantly below the performance of the control group. Conclusion: Conventional resin composite outperformed the SAC whether applied solely or in conjunction with their corresponding universal adhesives.
Influence of Peripheral Enamel Bonding and Chlorhexidine Pretreatment on Resin Bonding to Dentin.

Abstract:PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of peripheral enamel bonding, chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) pretreatment, and storage time on resin-dentin microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of a self-etching adhesive system and selfetching cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-six noncarious human third molars were coronally sectioned to provide a flat dentin surface; the circumferential enamel was removed from half of these and the other half was left intact. Pretreatment with 0.2% or 2% CHX or none (control) was performed before bonding composite blocks with Panavia F2.0 or RelyX Unicem to dentin. Specimens were stored in 0.5% chloramine for 3 days (control) or 6 months. Bonded specimens were sectioned into 1-mm2 dentin-only beams and a tensile load was applied until failure. The resulting 14 test groups, defined by control group/storage time/cement/CHX application mode/enamel bonding, were analyzed using two-way and three-way ANOVA, as well as Tukey's HSD post-hoc test (α = 0.05). Failure patterns of the specimens were observed and measured using scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS The comparison of the control vs experimental subgroups with peripheral enamel bonding and without CHX pretreatment after six months found no significant differences regarding the µTBS between the cements (p > 0.05) but did for the storage time (p <= 0.05). When storing the specimens for six months, the absence of peripheral enamel bonding significantly decreased the µTBS (p <= 0.05). Panavia F2.0 specimens showed significantly higher µTBS values than RelyX Unicem specimens (p <= 0.05). CHX pretreatment, regardless the concentration, showed a significant influence on the µTBS (p <= 0.05). SEM revealed that peripheral enamel bonding reduced failures at the resin/dentin interface. CONCLUSIONS The absence of peripheral enamel bonding and a longer storage time decrease the µTBS of twostep self-etching adhesive system and a one-step self-etching cement. CHX pretreatment of the dentinal surfaces seems to improve the durability of the bond to dentin.
Effect of a Novel Prime-and-rinse Approach on Short- and Long-Term Dentin Bond Strength of Self-Etch Adhesives.

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of the prime‐and‐rinse approach, using a 10‐methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP)‐containing primer, on the short‐ and long‐term dentin microtensile bond strengths (MTBSs) of mild self‐etch adhesives. Half of sixty human midcoronal dentin surfaces were polished as control (self‐etch approach), and the other half were polished and further treated with a 15% MDP‐containing primer and thoroughly sprayed with water as prime‐and‐rinse approach. The dentin surfaces were treated with a self‐etch adhesive, and a composite resin was placed on the surfaces. The following materials were used: Clearfil S3 Bond+Clearfil Majesty; G‐Bond+Gradia Direct; Adper Easy One+Z250; and i Bond+Charisma. The MTBS was examined after 24 h and 14 months in water storage. The resin–dentin interfaces were analysed using scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy. Pretreated dentin surfaces were further analysed using scanning electron microscopy and micro‐Raman spectroscopy. Compared with the self‐etch approach, the prime‐and‐rinse approach significantly increased the dentin MTBS, regardless of the duration of storage. The scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy findings revealed that the prime‐and‐rinse approach removed most of the dentin smear layer. The Raman spectra of the MDP‐treated dentin reveal the characteristic spectra of collagen, hydroxyapatite, and the monomer. Therefore, the prime‐and‐rinse approach using MDP‐containing primers prior to the application of mild self‐etch adhesives significantly increases the short‐ and long‐term MTBS of dentin.
Effect of polyacrylic acid pretreatment on the microtensile bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement to dentin

Abstract:Aim of the study: to evaluate in vitro the effect of dentin surface pretreatment with polyacrylic acid on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of self-adhesive resin cements and resin modified glass ionomer luting cements (RMGIC). Materials and Methods: The occlusal enamel of 16 teeth was removed perpendicular to the long axis of teeth to expose flat dentin surface at a standardized depth which is 1mm apical to DEJ. The teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups according to cementation protocol of indirect resin composite blocks namely; RelyX-Unicem with no pretreatment, RelyX-Unicem with polyacrylic acid pretreatment, FujiCEM (RMGIC) with no pretreatment and FujiCEM (RMGIC) with polyacrylic acid pretreatment. The restored teeth were mounted on the cutting machine, sectioned into a series of 1 mm2 thick. The sticks were stressed to failure under tension using Universal Testing Machine to record the microtensile bond strength. The collected data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey’s test.Results: The highest mean value was detected in RelyX-Unicem with no pretreatment, followed by Fujicem with polyacrylic acid pretreatment; whereas the lowest value was recorded in Fujicem with no pretreatment. Using two ways ANOVA revealed that material type had a statistically significant effect (p=0.003), with a higher mean value in RelyX-Unicem. However, pretreatment had a non-significant effect (p=0.510). The interaction of the two variables had a statistically significant effect (p<0.0001). Conclusion: Polyacrylic acid adversely affects the microtensile bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement; however it improves bond strength of RMGIC.

Abstract:After TSC or SB pretreatments of monolithic zirconia, IDS with OBU could affect the μTBS to dentin and morphological alterations, positively. IDS with Optibond Universal resulted in higher μTBS than the ones CUQ. Besides, SEM images of OBU revealed that thick hybrid layer with longer resin tags was observed. This study evaluated the effects of immediate dentin sealing (IDS) using different universal adhesives on microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of pretreated monolithic translucent tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia‐based CAD/CAM restoration to dentin and microscopic morphological alterations. Mid‐coronal dentin were obtained from 32 human molars and randomly allocated into 8 groups according to the presence/absence of IDS, universal adhesives for IDS (Single Bond Universal/SBU, Clearfil Quick Bond/CUQ, Optibond Universal/OBU) and zirconia surface pretreatments (tribochemical silica coating‐30 μm CoJet particles/TSC, sandblasting‐50 μm Al2O3/SB): Group TSC, Group TSC+SBU, Group TSC+CUQ, Group TSC+OBU, Group SB, Group SB+SBU, Group SB+CUQ, Group SB+OBU. CAD/CAM restorations (Lava Plus High Translucency Zirconia Disc) were produced, luted, and subjected to 10.000 thermocycles (5°C–55°C). Zirconia–dentin bars (2 × 2 × 8 mm) were subjected to μTBS test (n = 16). Surface morphology of zirconia and zirconia–dentin interfaces were analyzed under SEM (n = 1). Two‐way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests were used for statistical analyses (p 0.05). A thick, intact hybrid layer with long resin tags were observed for Group TSC+OBU and Group SB+OBU. After tribochemical silica coating or sandblasting pretreatments of monolithic zirconia, IDS procedure with Optibond Universal could affect the bond strength to dentin and morphological appearance, positively.

Defying ageing: An expectation for dentine bonding with universal adhesives?

Abstract:Objectives The present study evaluated the long-term dentine bonding effectiveness of five universal adhesives in etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode after 12 months of water-ageing. Methods The adhesives evaluated included All-Bond Universal, Clearfil Universal Bond, Futurabond U Prime&Bond Elect and Scotchbond Universal. Microtensile bond strength and transmission electron microscopy of the resin-dentine interfaces created in human coronal dentine were examined after 24h or 12 months. Results Microtensile bond strength were significantly affected by bonding strategy (etch-and-rinse vs self-etch) and ageing (24h vs 12 months). All subgroups showed significantly decreased bond strength after ageing except for Prime&Bond Elect and Scotchbond Universal used in self-etch mode. All five adhesives employed in etch-and-rinse mode exhibited ultrastructural features characteristic of collagen degradation and resin hydrolysis. A previously-unobserved inside-out collagen degradation pattern was identified in hybrid layers created by 10-MDP containing adhesives (All-Bond Universal, Scotchbond Universal and Clearfil Universal Bond) in the etch-and-rinse mode, producing partially degraded collagen fibrils with intact periphery and a hollow core. In the self-etch mode, all adhesives except for Prime&Bond Elect exhibited degradation of the collagen fibrils along the thin hybrid layers. The three 10-MDP containing universal adhesives did not protect surface collagen fibrils from degradation when bonding was performed in the self-etch mode. Conclusions Despite the adjunctive conclusion that bonds created by universal adhesives in the self-etch bonding mode are more resistant to decline in bond strength when compared with those bonds created using the etch-and-rinse mode, bonds created by universal adhesives are generally incapable of defying ageing.

Abstract:AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different bonding techniques ethanol wet bonding and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) wet bonding and a novel collagen cross-linker Quercetin application on the durability of resin-dentin bond and observe the bonded interface under the scanning electron microscope (SEM).MATERIALS AND METHODS: For shear bond strength testing, flat coronal dentin surfaces were prepared on 110 extracted human molars. Teeth were randomly divided into five experimental groups according to different surface pretreatments techniques. Group A was control group without any surface pretreatment. In Group B, ethanol wet bonding pretreatment was done before the application of adhesive. In Group C, DMSO wet bonding was done before the application of adhesive and in Groups D and E, Quercetin along with ethanol and Quercetin along with DMSO pretreatment, respectively, were done before adhesive application. Composite restorations were placed in all the samples. Twenty samples from each group were subjected to immediate and delayed (9 months) shear bond strength evaluation. In addition, two samples per group were subjected to the scanning electron microscopic analysis for the observation of resin-dentin interface.STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Data collected were subjected to the statistical analysis using the one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's test at a significance level of <i>P</i> < 0.05.RESULTS: Dentin pretreatment with all the techniques resulted in significantly higher resin-dentin bond strength after 9 months storage with DMSO group showing the highest bond strength values.CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that these biomodification techniques can improve the durability of the resin-dentin bond.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objectives</h3><p>To determine whether dentin–adhesive interface stability would be improved by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) wet-bonding and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>Etched dentin surfaces from sound third molars were randomly assigned to five groups according to different pretreatments: group 1, water wet-bonding (WWB); group 2, 50% (v/v) DMSO wet-bonding (DWB); groups 3–5, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 wt% EGCG-incorporated 50% (v/v) DMSO wet-bonding (0.01%, 0.1%, and 1%EGCG/DWB). Singlebond universal adhesive was applied to the pretreated dentin surfaces, and composite buildups were constructed. Microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and interfacial nanoleakage were respectively examined after 24 h water storage or 1-month collagenase ageing. In situ zymography and<em>Streptococcus mutans</em> (<em>S. mutans</em>) biofilm formation were also investigated.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>After collagenase ageing, μTBS of groups 4 (0.1%EGCG/DWB) and 5 (1%EGCG/DWB) did not decrease (<em>p</em> > 0.05) and was higher than that of the other three groups (<em>p</em> < 0.05). Nanoleakage expression of groups 4 and 5 was less than that of the other three groups (<em>p</em> < 0.05), regardless of collagenase ageing. Metalloproteinase activities within the hybrid layer in groups 4 and 5 were suppressed. Furthermore, pretreatment with 1%EGCG/DWB (group 5) efficiently inhibited <em>S. mutans</em> biofilm formation along the dentin–adhesive interface.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Significance</h3><p>This study suggested that the synergistic action of DMSO wet-bonding and EGCG can effectively improve dentin–adhesive interface stability. This strategy provides clinicians with promising benefits to achieve desirable dentin bonding performance and to prevent secondary caries, thereby extending the longevity of adhesive restorations.</p>

Abstract:Objective:This in vitro study evaluated the effect of curing modes and light-cure times on microtensile bond strength of adhesives.Method:40 extracted intact human molars were flattened to expose coronal dentin,and assigned into two groups,then prepared with one-step plus(OS)or clearfil-se-bond(SE).According to curing modes and light-cure times of adhesives,each group was divided into four subgroups(n=5):fast 10 s、fast 15 s、ramp 20 s and fast 20 s.Then the prepared teeth were restored with resin composites incrementally,After one week of water-storage,they were tested for microtensile bond strength.The failure models of beams were observed under a stereomicroscope.Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and LSD test(a=0.05).Result:In the OS group,there was no statistical difference between the microtensile bond strengths(μTBS) of fast 10 s、ramp 20 s and fast 20 s,and theμTBS of fast 15 s was significantly lower than those of ramp20s and fast 20 s.In the SE group,it was fast 20 s>ramp 20 s>fast 10 s and fast 15 s,and the μTBS of fast 20 s was far more higher than other subgroups.Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study,the soft-start technique could not improve μTBS of adhesives significantly.Being Cured in conventional curing model for 20 s can improve μTBS of clearfil-se-bond significantly,while one-step plus should be cured for 10 s in conventional cuing model.
Bonding Protocols to Reverse the Bond Strength of a Universal Adhesive to Hemostatic Agent-contaminated Dentin

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of different bonding protocols on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of a universal adhesive to dentin contaminated with a hemostatic agent. Methods and materials: Ninety-five extracted premolars were used in this study. For the μTBS test, 80 teeth were cut to expose mid-coronal dentin and randomly divided into two groups (uncontaminated dentin and hemostatic agent-contaminated dentin). Each group was further divided into five subgroups (n=8/group): 1) SE: no additional treatment, 2) ER: etching with 32% phosphoric acid, 3) CHX: rinsing with 0.2% chlorhexidine, 4) EDTA: rinsing with 17% EDTA, and 5) T40: application of universal adhesive for 40 seconds. A universal adhesive was applied followed by resin composite build-up. μTBS test was performed after 24 hours of water storage. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was calculated followed by the Duncan testing (α=0.05). The failure mode was analyzed using light microscopy. Additional teeth were prepared for energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis (n=1/group) and resin-dentin interface observation (n=2/group) using scanning electron microscopy. Results: Adverse effects of hemostatic agent contamination on the bonding performance of a universal adhesive was found in the SE, CHX, and T40 groups (p<0.05). Fewer and shorter resin tags were observed in the SE, CHX, and T40 groups. A higher percentage of adhesive failure and mixed failure was found in contaminated dentin. All bonding protocols revealed lower amounts of Al and Cl after dentin contamination, except for the SE group. Conclusions: Hemostatic agent contamination adversely affected dentin bond strength. However, this bond strength could be reversed using the etch-and-rinse technique or rinsing with EDTA prior to adhesive application.

Materials and Methods: Ninety intact human molars were used after sectioning their occlusal surfaces to expose flat dentin surfaces. The specimens were randomly assigned to nine groups (n = 10). Group A was the control group (without using the cavity disinfectant). In groups B, C, D, and E, the prepared dentin surfaces were treated with 1 cc 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), 0.1% silver nanoparticle (SNP), 0.1% titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TNP), and 0.1% zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZNP) solutions for 1 minute, respectively, before applying the conditioner. CHX, SNPs, TNPs, and ZNPs were applied for 1 minute after applying the conditioner in groups F, G, H, and I, respectively. The specimens were restored with a conventional GIC and underwent μSBS testing after 24 hours. The data were analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (p=0.05). Results: The applications of the nanoparticles (SNP, TNP, and ZNP) after the conditioner were associated with significantly greater μSBS values compared to that of the control group (p values < 0.05). Significantly higher μSBS values were observed when TNP or ZNP was applied after the conditioner compared to their applications before the conditioner (p values < 0.05). The highest μSBS values were observed when TNP was applied after the conditioner. Conclusion: Dentin pretreatment with the nanoparticles after applying the conditioner enhanced the bond strength of the GIC to dentin compared with the control group. The best results were obtained for the TNPs applied after the conditioner. Keywords: glass ionomer cement, microshear bond strength, nanoparticles
