Abstract:In recent years, computational aesthetics has become an active research field. Mobile device applications (APP) have covered every aspect of life and become an indispensable part of people’s daily life. Unfortunately, few attempts have been made toward the computational evaluation of APP icon aesthetics. A framework for computational aesthetic evaluation of APP icons is proposed. A set of feature variables is defined to evaluate some aspects of APP icons, such as colorfulness, harmony and contrast. The human subjective ratings of 60 volunteers on the colorfulness, harmony, contrast and aesthetics of APP icons are also collected, and the statistical linear regression models are constructed. The results show that proposed regression models can explain 84%‒91% of human judgments on colorfulness, harmony, contrast and aesthetics of APP icons, and the evaluation scores of proposed models are highly correlated with manual evaluation scores.

Abstract:This paper presents a case study of end users and designers and how they perceive different mobile shopping app user interfaces (UIs). This paper aims to explore the UI preference differences between users and designers and elucidate specified UI attributes that are reflective of user preferences. This paper contains three procedures: 1) eliciting users' and designers' UI perceptual similarity by sorting to identify UI perceptual similarity space; 2) eliciting users' and designers' overall preferences by rating, which displays the preference dimensions; and 3) eliciting users' and designers' idiosyncratic perceptions by using the repertory grid technique (RGT), which indicates the UI perceptual differences between the users and the designers. The specified inter-group perceptual differences were detected by comparing RGT-elicited perceptions. The UI design features were explored, which influenced the designers' and users' subjective evaluations. The results showed four typical mobile shopping app UIs, and the distribution of ideal preference UIs for users and designers was evaluated. Through the experiments, rich qualitative insights were quantified, and valuable information from the participants was obtained. The specified design attributes of UI on the mobile shopping app, which improved user satisfaction, were found out. Moreover, those attributes will help designers know which important attributes should be noted.

Abstract:The progress and deficiencies in interface aesthetics research and aesthetics evaluation were analyzed.By integrating the theories and methods of kansei engineering,graphics,systems engineering,psychophysics and other disciplines,a new interface aesthetic evaluation method was proposed.In this paper,firstly,the perceptual image structure of interface aesthetics was analyzed,and it was found that balance,proportion,simplicity and echo were key potential factors influencing user aesthetic experience.Twelve aesthetic indexes and the evaluation system of interface aesthetic were built.Secondly,gray relational analysis was applied to analyze the aesthetic dominance orders of the design cases,and then aesthetics comprehensive evaluations were enforced.Finally,a prototype system of interface aesthetics evaluation was developed;and corresponding function modules including information encoding,aesthetics calculation and design cases comprehensive evaluation were introduced.The comparative experiment result through the normal paired comparison method in psychophysics verified that the system and method proposed in the paper were feasible and effective.

Abstract:Besides usability, visual appearance also plays an important role in influencing users' attitudes towards the mobile shopping apps. This article presents a pilot study that explores users' and designers' preferences for mobile shopping app user interfaces (UIs). The study consisted of two phases. (1) Eliciting participants' perception of UIs similarity by sorting, using DISTATIS and cluster analysis, the UIs similarity perceptual space was identified. (2) Eliciting participants' overall preference by rating. The results identified three typical UIs and the distribution of ideal preference UIs for users and designers. Last, users and designers' differences in the UI preference were discussed.
An Appraisal Method for Web Interfaces Based on Aesthetic Measurement

Abstract:In order to better guide the design of web interfaces, this study improved existing calculation formulas based on the research findings of aesthetic measures and proposed a set of interface aesthetic measures that can be used for web interfaces, including measures of balance, proportion, element overlap, and density. MATLAB 2020a was used to measure the aesthetic measures of 16 web interfaces, and a questionnaire was used to obtain participants’ subjective aesthetic perception of the web interfaces. The experimental results showed that measure of grayscale balance and measure of horizontal color balance were positively significantly correlated with subjective balance. Measure of proportion of layer objects to interface frame was significantly positively correlated with subjective proportionality, while measure of proportion of layer objects to interface layout was negatively correlated. There was a significant positive correlation between measure of grayscale balance, measure of horizontal color balance, measure of density and subjective overall aesthetics. Additionally, measure of element overlap was significantly negatively correlated with subjective harmony.

Abstract:2.5D graphic or Isometric graphic, as a common graphic expression method, has been fully developed in 2021 and has become a prevalent UI illustration element. With the rapid development of computer technology, many two-dimensional graphic images are analyzed and calculated digitally, and integrated data are efficiently and automatically generated. Aesthetic evaluation starts from subjective perceptual evaluation to rational digital calculation. In order to better calculate the aesthetic evaluation of 2.5D graphic, combining various aesthetic evaluation researches in the two-dimensional plane and the existing aesthetic index evaluation methods, this paper puts forward the idea of applying the two-dimensional plane evaluation method to the element layout 2.5D graphic. The research refers to the 13 aesthetic measures in the interface layout proposed by the NGO. In this study ,we selects the 2.5D graphic in 11 existing web pages from the design website as the samples, and extracts two-dimensional layout diagram of these samples. Then the beauty index calculation of the samples layout data found that the 13 aesthetic measures all have significant characteristics. In the experimental part, this study chose to take the measure of balance in the aesthetic measures as an example. By analyzing the numerical setting of the calculation formula, we designed 16 experimental as samples, and 10 design-related practitioners are recruited as subjects for aesthetic evaluation. Finally, the standardized data is fitted with manual evaluation results. The experimental results show a certain similarity with the previous sample data calculations, which proves the applicability of this evaluation method and lays the foundation for the standardized calculation of the beauty of 2.5D graphic. Future research can be carried out on this basis, it is necessary to study a set of overall aesthetic evaluation methods of the system, which can be more intuitively applied to the evaluation and generation of 2.5D graphic aesthetics. When 2.5D material forms a unified material library, the computer can automatically perform aesthetic calculations and layouts to generate the required 2.5D graphic based on the needs and user aesthetics, reducing labor costs and ensuring the stable quality.

Abstract:Computational image aesthetic evaluation is a computable human aesthetic perception and judgment realized by machines, which has a significant impact on a variety of applications such as image advanced search and promotional exhibition of painting arts. Various approaches have been proposed in copious literature trying to solve this challenging problem. However, there have been few attempts in reviewing works from different types of visual arts, due to their significant differences in visual features and aesthetic principles. In this survey, we present a comprehensive listing of the reviewed works on aesthetic assessment of photographs and paintings, mainly highlighting the contributions and innovations of the existing approaches. We firstly introduce aesthetic assessment benchmark datasets in different categories. Then, conventional aesthetic evaluation approaches based on handcrafted features are reviewed. Besides, we systematically evaluate recent deep learning techniques that are useful for developing robust models for aesthetic prediction tasks in scoring, distribution, attribute, and description. Moreover, the possibility of aesthetic-aware color enhancement, recomposition of photo images, and automatic generation of aesthetic-guided art paintings through computational approaches are summarized. Finally, challenges and potential future directions for this field are discussed. We hope that our survey could serve as a comprehensive reference source for future research on computational aesthetics in visual media.
Aesthetic Computational Model and Experimental Research Based on Seeking the Particle of Image Elements

Abstract:As an important part of interface design, interface layout has attracted more attention. Previous researchers used mathematical methods to explore the relationship between interface layout and user aesthetics in order to quantify users' subjective feelings. However, the current computational aesthetic quantification algorithms generalize the interface elements into rectangular boxes for unified treatment by default. In the interface layout, graphic elements with different shapes will bring users different levels of aesthetic attraction. Therefore, simply "dividing" the interface elements into a series of rectangular blocks for attraction evaluation will affect the objectivity of the results. This paper proposes a computational model based on seeking the particle of image pixels and makes a multivariate linear analysis between the subjective score and the calculated values under the two computational models to explore whether the improved evaluation method is more in line with people's perceptual aesthetics. The calculation method of balance (BM) is taken as an example to verify. In the experiment, six test images are selected, and the number of image pixels and the centroid of pixels are counted with the help of Matlab and other software, which verifies the accuracy and objectivity of the new calculation method to measure the aesthetic layout of interface elements. The results show that the fitting effect between the data obtained by the beauty calculation model based on pixel particles and subjective ratings is better, which is more in line with the user's subjective preferences. Aesthetic calculation is the design trend in the future.
Exploiting the emotional preference of music for music recommendation in daily activities

Abstract:The emotional use of music plays an important role in influencing people's music-searching behaviour. Many users listen to music for multiple mood regulation purposes. Therefore, emotional preference should be taken into consideration especially when building context-aware music recommendation systems which aim to satisfy users' short-term music needs. In addition, cultural differences will affect the way people experience and value emotion from music. Based on these aspects, we investigate the emotional preference of music in daily activities through a cross-cultural survey in China and the UK, and build emotional maps between activity and music for the two countries. Furthermore, we introduce EmoMusic, a novel emotion-based music recommendation service for daily activities which supports visualisation and control of music emotion through an interactive interface. A user study is presented to evaluate the application. Results reveal good usability of the service and show that visualization and interaction in a music emotion space can improve acceptance of music recommendations. Our work helps to understand the emotional preference of music for various activities and how to exploit emotional cues of music in a music recommendation service, paving the way for more user-centered music recommendation systems.

Abstract:Computational aesthetics has become an active research field in recent years, but there have been few attempts in computational aesthetic evaluation of logos. In this article, we restrict our study on black-and-white logos, which are professionally designed for name-brand companies with similar properties, and apply perceptual models of standard design principles in computational aesthetic evaluation of logos. We define a group of metrics to evaluate some aspects in design principles such as balance, contrast, and harmony of logos. We also collect human ratings of balance, contrast, harmony, and aesthetics of 60 logos from 60 volunteers. Statistical linear regression models are trained on this database using a supervised machine-learning method. Experimental results show that our model-evaluated balance, contrast, and harmony have highly significant correlation of over 0.87 with human evaluations on the same dimensions. Finally, we regress human-evaluated aesthetics scores on model-evaluated balance, contrast, and harmony. The resulted regression model of aesthetics can predict human judgments on perceived aesthetics with a high correlation of 0.85. Our work provides a machine-learning-based reference framework for quantitative aesthetic evaluation of graphic design patterns and also the research of exploring the relationship between aesthetic perceptions of human and computational evaluation of design principles extracted from graphic designs.
An Order-Complexity Aesthetic Assessment Model for Aesthetic-aware Music Recommendation

Abstract:Computational aesthetic evaluation has made remarkable contribution to visual art works, but its application to music is still rare. Currently, subjective evaluation is still the most effective form of evaluating artistic works. However, subjective evaluation of artistic works will consume a lot of human and material resources. The popular AI generated content (AIGC) tasks nowadays have flooded all industries, and music is no exception. While compared to music produced by humans, AI generated music still sounds mechanical, monotonous, and lacks aesthetic appeal. Due to the lack of music datasets with rating annotations, we have to choose traditional aesthetic equations to objectively measure the beauty of music. In order to improve the quality of AI music generation and further guide computer music production, synthesis, recommendation and other tasks, we use Birkhoff's aesthetic measure to design a aesthetic model, objectively measuring the aesthetic beauty of music, and form a recommendation list according to the aesthetic feeling of music. Experiments show that our objective aesthetic model and recommendation method are effective.

Abstract:The layout design of the human-machine interface is to make it an effective information input and output medium through a reasonable layout of the interface elements. The quality of its design not only affects the user's visual sense but also affects the work performance of the human-machine interface system. Although the main factors that affect interface design are user tasks and user capabilities, with the development of the times, users' aesthetics and needs are also advancing with the times, and designers should not be limited to considering the realization of functions. Nowadays, under the background of similar functions, how to stand out from many products in the human-machine interface, product aesthetics has become an increasingly important factor. At present, there is no clear standard to guide interface design, nor can it be applied to actual interface design.In the exploration of the beauty standard, Ngo et al. proposed a bottom-up method to objectively measure the beauty of the interface, combining the characteristic elements of the interface design with the user's perception of visual beauty. The evaluation model consists of 13 measurement features. Ngo also verified the impact of these features on the aesthetics of the interface and obtained the most influential evaluation index of the aesthetics of the interface. However, the number of features is too large and it is not easy to calculate. At the same time, for interfaces with different functional properties, the relative importance of aesthetic indicators is not consistent, which may affect the objectivity of the calculation results of interface aesthetics.This research is based on Ngo's beauty calculation theory. After screening, we select 4 representative beauty indicators: balance, symmetry, integrity, and simplicity, and quantify them separately, and introduce the analytic hierarchy process to calculate each indicator. Finally, a comprehensive beauty calculation formula method for the layout of interface elements is proposed. Taking Luban banner design as an example, this research verifies the objectivity and accuracy of this method for measuring the beauty level of the layout of interface elements and can reflect the influence of a single evaluation index on the comprehensive beauty, which is helpful to guide designers to design and improve the interfaceIn this study, four indicators and formulas for beauty evaluation were selected to verify the effectiveness and reliability of the method. However, there are still shortcomings in this research. The emotional impact of interface elements, the personal preferences of subjective reviewers, and interface colors are not taken into consideration. In-depth research will be carried out in the future.

Abstract:Aesthetic evaluation of increasingly complex and personalized human–computer interaction interfaces serves as a critical bridge between humans and machines, fundamentally enhancing various interaction factors. This study addresses the challenges in aesthetic evaluation by adjusting existing methodologies to incorporate seven aesthetic metrics: density, symmetry, balance, proportionality, uniformity, simplicity, and sequence. These metrics were effectively integrated into a composite evaluation metric through both multiple regression analysis and entropy methods, with the efficacy of both fitting methods validated. Leveraging automatic segmentation and recognition technology for interface screenshots, this research enables rapid, automated acquisition of evaluations for the seven metrics and the composite index, leading to the development of a prototype system for interface layout aesthetic assessment. Aimed at reducing the time, manpower, and resources required for interface evaluation, this study enhances the universality, compatibility, and flexibility of layout assessments. It promotes integration at any stage of the design process, significantly benefiting lightweight rapid evaluation and iterative design cycles, thereby advancing the field of interface aesthetic evaluation.

Abstract:To explore the card game interface layout's aesthetic, some of the most popular card games worldwide were selected as examples. The six aesthetic indexes were selected and quantified, including balance, symmetry, order, cohesion, simplicity, and unity. Then AHP (analytic hierarchy process) was introduced to determine the weight of each indicator. Finally, a comprehensive aesthetic evaluation method of interface layout was obtained and proved to be effective. This method can provide designers with guidance and suggestions for the selection and improvement of interface design schemes.

Abstract:Although computational aesthetics evaluation has made certain achievements in many fields, its research of music performance remains to be explored. At present, subjective evaluation is still a ultimate method of music aesthetics research, but it will consume a lot of human and material resources. In addition, the music performance generated by AI is still mechanical, monotonous and lacking in beauty. In order to guide the generation task of AI music performance, and to improve the performance effect of human performers, this paper uses Birkhoff's aesthetic measure to propose a method of objective measurement of beauty. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: Firstly, we put forward an objective aesthetic evaluation method to measure the music performance aesthetic; Secondly, we propose 10 basic music features and 4 aesthetic music features. Experiments show that our method performs well on performance assessment.

Abstract:As one of the branches of the game, the host game has been growing its own team in recent years. With the increasing popularity of the game, the home game console is gradually favored by more and more people. In addition to the excellent game content and good performance of the product, the appearance of the host chassis and user experience are also a part of the design of such products that need to be considered. This experiment takes the aesthetic of the interface layout of the home game console as the research object. On the basis of the algorithm standard verification of the interface aesthetic of Zhou Lei and others, it calculates and evaluates the aesthetic degree of the existing several representative home game console interfaces, makes a reasonable analysis based on the research results, and summarizes and reflects on the whole experimental process, and puts forward the improvement suggestions discussion.

Abstract:Chinese traditional music, a vital expression of Chinese cultural heritage, possesses both a profound emotional resonance and artistic allure. This study sets forth to refine and analyze the acoustical features essential for the aesthetic recognition of Chinese traditional music, utilizing a dataset spanning five aesthetic genres. Through recursive feature elimination, we distilled an initial set of 447 low-level physical features to a more manageable 44, establishing their feature-importance coefficients. This reduction allowed us to estimate the quantified influence of higher-level musical components on aesthetic recognition, following the establishment of a correlation between these components and their physical counterparts. We conducted a comprehensive examination of the impact of various musical elements on aesthetic genres. Our findings indicate that the selected 44-dimensional feature set could enhance aesthetic recognition. Among the high-level musical factors, timbre emerges as the most influential, followed by rhythm, pitch, and tonality. Timbre proved pivotal in distinguishing between the JiYang and BeiShang genres, while rhythm and tonality were key in differentiating LingDong from JiYang, as well as LingDong from BeiShang.

Abstract:Guide page design is an important part in APP design. A good guide page can attract users' interest and attention in a short time and effectively transmit information. Therefore, attractiveness is a key factor in evaluating design of APP guide pages. In the actual design activities, most of the interface elements in guide pages are arranged in the form of high balance. In order to explore the relationship between attractiveness of APP guide pages and this arrangement, this study collected samples of 40 guide page design and the corresponding user access data from zcool.com (a well-known Chinese design social website). Interface aesthetic evaluation method is applied to calculate the value of the three indicators (balance, equilibrium and symmetry) associated with visual balance, SPSS analysis results show that visual balance has an important potential impact on improving the attractiveness of APP guide page.

Abstract:Product appearance is one of the crucial factors that influence consumers’ purchase decisions. The attractiveness of product appearance is mainly determined by the inherent aesthetics of the design composition related to the arrangement of visual design elements. Hence, it is critical to study and improve the arrangement of visual design elements for product appearance design. Strategies that apply aesthetic design principles to assist designers in effectively arranging visual design elements are widely acknowledged in both academia and industry. However, applying aesthetic design principles relies heavily on the designer’s perception and experience, while it is rather challenging for novice designers. Meanwhile, it is hard to measure and quantify design aesthetics in designing artefacts when designers refer to existing successful designs. In this regard, this study aims to introduce a method that assists designers in applying aesthetic design principles to improve the attractiveness of product appearance. Furthermore, formulas for aesthetic measurement based on aesthetic design principles are also developed, and it makes an early attempt to provide quantified aesthetic measurements of design artefacts. A case study on camera design was conducted to demonstrate the merits of the proposed method where the improved strategies for the camera appearance design offer insights for concept generation in product appearance design based on aesthetic design principles.

Abstract:With the development and proliferation of mobile devices, the industry of mobile applications has grown into a massive market. Well-designed user interfaces are essential for a high-quality and popular mobile application. To understand the basic principles of UI designing, this work employs a data-driven quantitative approach. In this work, we build a dataset of mobile UI and propose a systematic approach for quantitative analysis of UI design using five measurable metrics. Our dataset and analytical methods make it possible to correlate the quantitative metrics with the qualitative features so that the quality of UI designs can be reliably studied and optimized. The evaluation shows that these proposed metrics can be correlated with the qualitative features, and some UI designing suggestions or insights are generated.
