Abstract:A highly spectral-efficient transmission system based on optical code-division multiplexing (OCDM) technique is investigated. To meet the rapid increase in the demand of data bandwidth, spectral efficiency is becoming a key factor in optical transport systems. Several modulation formats along with the optical receiver design have been proposed to upgrade the spectral efficiency. OCDM is one of the promising techniques for this purpose. OCDM is the other class of multiplexing technique than optical time-division multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). OCDM provides unique features such as asynchronous transmission, secure communication, soft capacity on demand, and high degree of scalability. In this paper, we apply OCDM technique to the highly spectral-efficient transmission system by quaternary phase-shift keying optical encoding/decoding along with ultrafast optical time-gating and optical hard thresholding. As a result, a transmission of 6.4 Tbit/s OCDM/WDM (4 OCDM $\times {\hbox{ 40 WDM }}\times {\hbox{ 40 Gbit/s}}$) using only C-band wavelength region is experimentally demonstrated with 1.6-bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency.

Abstract:A new family of two-dimensional wavelength/time codes (2D-W/T-MQC/MQCs) and its system structure of encoder/decoder are proposed, which is based on tunable optical fiber delay lines (TOFDLs) and fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). Multiple-access interference (MAI) can fully be eliminated by using a wavelength/time balanced detector structure at the receivers. Furthermore, the performance of the system is also analyzed by taking into account the phase-induced intensity noise (PIIN), shot noise, and thermal noise. The simulation results reveal that the new code family possesses higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and lower bit-error rate (BER) than the family of one-dimensional spectral amplitude coding modified quadratic congruence codes (1D-SAC-MQCs) and that of the two-dimensional wavelength/spatial M-matrices codes (2D-W/S-M-Matrices) so that a larger number of subscribers can be supported simultaneously. Additionally, the 2D-W/T-MQC/MQC system requires less signal power for each light source under the same error-free condition. As a result, the network based on the new code family will support more active users and utilize the frequency bandwidth more efficiently.

Abstract:Presents a new category of optical CDMA systems which work based on spectral encoding. In such systems, that the authors refer to as frequency-encoded CDMA (FE-CDMA) systems, the coding is done in the frequency domain while in the usual CDMA systems the code multiplies the modulation signal in the time domain. They present a new type of FE-CDMA system, based on encoding noncoherent broadband sources. They discuss the advantages of the system compared to other optical CDMA systems and present its performance. They show that very efficient, low-cost, CDMA systems can be obtained with an aggregate throughput of many gigabits per second. Also, for this system, the spreading gain of CDMA is independent of the modulation bandwidth. Hence, the system can accommodate variable bit rates, naturally.<>

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an uplink joint time and angle domain sparse code multiple access (TASCMA) scheme for mmWave systems to improve the system capacity and user connectivity. This proposed scheme mainly includes three processes: sparse spreading, antenna allocation and beamforming, which are coordinated by the base station (BS). The spreading process is conducted over time domain by associating a specific sparse spreading vector with each user according to its location, while the antenna allocation and beamforming processes are conducted over angle domain to superimpose the user signals in a beam to further achieve the multiplexing gain. At each user, it spreads its signal with its own spreading sequence and then sends the spread signal to the mmWave channel. At the BS receiver, first the receive beamforming is performed and then a corresponding factor graph is constructed, based on which, message passing algorithm (MPA) is performed to recover all users' transmitted messages. Simulation results show that the proposed TASCMA scheme has better Bit Error Rate(BER) performance than the existing schemes.

Abstract:A new segmented correlating decoder of synchronous optical CDMA using modified prime sequence codes is proposed. The performance of the proposed system is analyzed under the assumption of Poisson shot noise model for the receiver photodetector. Abstract:This paper discusses design, simulation, and experimental investigations of optical-code-division multiple-access (O-CDMA) networking using a spectral phase-encoded time spreading (SPECTS) method. O-CDMA technologies can potentially provide flexible access of optical bandwidths in excess of 1Tb/s without relying on wavelength-or time-division-multiplexing modules, provided that they overcome the interference caused by other users broadcasting over the same channel, called multiuser interference (MUI). This paper pursues theoretical and experimental methods to mitigate the MUI. Analysis shows that nonuniform phase coding can increase the orthogonality of the code set, thereby reducing the impact of the MUI. The experiment conducted in a SPECTS O-CDMA testbed incorporating a highly nonlinear thresholder demonstrated error-free operation for four users at 1.25-Gb/s/user and for two users at 10-Gb/s/user.

Abstract:We summarize several novel schemes to generate multi-level modulation formats for high capacity transmission system with high spectral efficiency. We show that multi-level 8QAM, 16QAM, 32QAM, and 64QAM (QAM: quatlrature amplitude modulation) optical signals can be generated by commercial optical and electrical devices. Employing these multilevel modulation formats, we have realized PDM-8QAM (PDM: polarization division multiplexing) 32 Tb/s and PDM-36QAM 64-Tb/s signals transmission over 580- and 320-km fibers, respectively.

Abstract:A hybrid 1D/2D en/decoding O-CDMA system is proposed to support multiple bit rates. To the best of our knowledge, a hybrid O-CDMA system with 2.5Gb/s (OC-16) and 155Mb/s (OC-3) transmission along the single mode fiber with length of 60km is first successfully demonstrated. In this experimental demonstration, phase coded SSFBGs with chip rate up to 320Gchip/s are applied as 1-dimensional en/decoders in 2.5Gb/s transmission while 2D en/decoders are applied in 155Mb/s real time video transmission. Error free transmission is achieved in 1D encoded 2.5Gb/s link; while 2D encoded 155Mb/s channel carrying video signal can be transmitted along the same fiber. This proposed hybrid 1D/2D en/decoding O-CDMA system can also be used for O-CDMA PONs to reduce the costs at the ONU side.

Abstract:By multiplexing two OFDM signals with the same channel space and bit rate together in an interleaved mode, a novel optical multiplexing scheme is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Since the channel space is halved, the spectral efficiency is doubled compared with conventional OFDM. It is proved that the orthogonality between the subcarriers is maintained as long as the data is real. With discrete Fourier transform, the proposed scheme has similar computational complexity as conventional OFDM and single sideband modulation is conveniently achieved. A 10 Gb/s transmission system is set up, and proves the feasibility and efficiency of the scheme experimentally.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new hybrid code structure based on the overlapping of two light sources to produce the effect of multi-voltage amplitudes. And we also proposed an efficient polarity reversal threshold (RRT) algorithm for multilevel based OCC system. Then taking the issue of SPO into account, a novel adaptive sampling method (ASM) is proposed, which can effectively alleviate the problem of SPO and further enhance the performance of multilevel OCC. It is demonstrated that a data rate of 8.4 Kbit/s can be achieved by applying the proposed two algorithms.

Abstract:A simple code switching scheme for security enhancement of an optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) communication system is proposed. The scheme avoids the replacement of all the encoders and decoders in the system and all users' codes are changed by only tuning the center wavelength of the laser source. Each en/decoder contains multiple codes which are nonoverlapping in the spectrum. The scheme is demonstrated in a proof-of-principle transmission experiment. There are three codes on the encoder and decoder pairs, one 2-D code and two 1-D bipolar gold codes with chip number of 63 and 127, respectively. All three codes are decoded successfully after 12.7-km single-mode fiber link.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, energy-saving mode-division-multiplexing passive optical network (MDM-PON) scheme utilizing self-homodyne detection for high-speed/capacity access network based on low modal-crosstalk few-mode fiber (FMF) and all-fiber mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX). In the proposed scheme, one of the spatial modes is used to transmit a portion of signal carrier (namely pilot-tone) as the local oscillator (LO), while the others are used for signal-bearing channels. At the receiver, the pilot-tone and the signal can be separated without strong crosstalk and sent to the receiver for coherent detection. The spectral efficiency (SE) is significantly enhanced when multiple spatial channels are used. Meanwhile, the self-homodyne detection scheme can effectively suppress laser phase noise, which relaxes the requirement for the lasers line-width at the optical line terminal or optical network units (OLT/ONUs). The digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver is also simplified since it removes the need for frequency offset compensation and complex phase correction, which reduces the computational complexity and energy consumption. Polarization division multiplexing (PDM) that offers doubled SE is also supported by the scheme. The proposed scheme is scalable to multi-wavelength application when wavelength MUX/DEMUX is utilized. Utilizing the proposed scheme, we demonstrate a proof of concept 4 × 40-Gb/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission over 55-km FMF using low modal-crosstalk two-mode FMF and MUX/DEMUX with error free operation. Compared with back to back case, less than 1-dB Q-factor penalty is observed after 55-km FMF of the four channels. Signal power and pilot-tone power are also optimized to achieve the optimal transmission performance.

Abstract:As a promising solution for short-to-medium transmission systems, direct detection optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DDO-OFDM) or discrete multi-tone (DMT) has been intensively investigated in last decade. Benefitting from the advantages of peak-to-average power (PAPR) reduction and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) equalization, precoding techniques are widely applied to enhance the performance of DDO-OFDM systems. However, the conventional method of partitioning precoding sets limits the ability of precoding schemes to optimize the SNR variation and the allocation of modulation formats. Thus, the precoding transmission systems are hard to reach the capacity that traditional bit-power loading (BPL) techniques, like the Levin-Campello (LC) algorithm, can achieve. In this paper, we investigate the principle of SNR variation for precoded DDO-OFDM systems and theoretically demonstrate that the SNR equalization effect of precoding techniques is actually determined by the noise equalization process. Based on this fact, we propose an adaptively partitioned precoding (APP) algorithm to unlock the ability to control the SNR of each subcarrier. As demonstrated by the simulation and experimental results, the proposed APP algorithm achieves the transmission capacity as high as the LC algorithm and has nearly 1 dB PAPR reduction. Besides, the look-up table (LUT) operation ensures low complexity of the proposed APP algorithm compared with LC algorithm. To avoid severe chromatic dispersion (CD) induced spectral fading, single sideband (SSB) modulation is also implemented. We find that SSB modulation can reach the capacity of double sideband (DSB) modulation in optical back-to-back (OB2B) configuration by optimizing the modulation index. Therefore, the APP based SSB-DDO-OFDM scheme can sufficiently enhance the performance of cost-sensitive short-to-medium reach optical fiber communication systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes a multiple access scheme suitable for general M-ary orthogonal modulation, where users are distinguished by different coding patterns. The mathematical models for both synchronous and asynchronous users are presented, and the system capacities are studied. Simulation results show that the proposed system outperforms CDMA systems by as much as 25% in capacity for asynchronous users. In addition, a synchronous system has higher capacity when user number is larger, but will suffer from great capacity loss otherwise.

Abstract:Capacity is the eternal pursuit for communication systems due to the overwhelming demand of bandwidth hungry applications. As the backbone infrastructure of modern communication networks, the optical fiber transmission system undergoes a significant capacity growth over decades by exploiting available physical dimensions (time, frequency, quadrature, polarization and space) of the optical carrier for multiplexing. For each dimension, stringent orthogonality must be guaranteed for perfect separation of independent multiplexed signals. To catch up with the ever-increasing capacity requirement, it is therefore interesting and important to develop new multiplexing methodologies relaxing the orthogonal constraint thus achieving better spectral efficiency and more flexibility of frequency reuse. Inspired by the idea of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme, here we propose a digital domain power division multiplexed (PDM) transmission technology which is fully compatible with current dual polarization (DP) coherent optical communication system. The coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) modulation has been employed owing to its great superiority on high spectral efficiency, flexible coding, ease of channel estimation and robustness against fiber dispersion. And a PDM-DP-CO-OFDM has been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated with 100Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission over 1440km standard single mode fibers (SSMFs). Two baseband quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) OFDM signals are overlaid together with different power levels. After IQ modulation, polarization multiplexing and long distance fiber transmission, the PDM-DP-CO-OFDM signal has been successfully recovered in the typical polarization diversity coherent receiver by successive interference cancellation (SIC) algorithm.

Abstract:In this study, a bipolar optical code-division multiple-access (Bi-OCDMA) technique based on spectral amplitude coding (SAC) was proposed by using a phase modulator to realize polarization coding through a free-space optical (FSO) channel. Various types of noise, such as amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise, thermal noise, and shot noise, were included in the simulation to approach the real application. The first simulation, utilizing a modified M-sequence as signature code, demonstrated that the proposed Bi-OCDMA system could be implemented in FSO communication. The proposed Bi-OCDMA scheme improves the transmission rate and power efficiency compared with the previous scheme. The structure of the proposed system alleviates multiple-access interference (MAI) with a simple and cost-effective design. The second simulation observed the performance of the proposed Bi-OCDMA for two users with several well-known SAC codes, i.e., multi-diagonal (MD) code, modified quadratic congruence (MQC) code, modified maximum length sequence (M-sequence) code, and Walsh–Hadamard code, in extreme weather conditions, both for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and turbulence-induced fading channel. The simulation results indicated that the Walsh–Hadamard code has superior performance compared to other codes. The results show the MD code can be implemented in the proposed Bi-OCDMA scheme for a medium-distance FSO.

Abstract:The CDMA system employing the cyclic prefix is referred as the CP-CDMA, which has been found to be very effective in mitigating the MAI by the use of the channel equalizer. However, the system may suffer from the problem of the calculation complexity with the channel equalizer and may not be suitable for UL application. This paper addresses the complexity issue by introducing a grouped code design principle based on the orthogonal frequency division. As a result, the CS codes are developed and used to replace the conventional codes with the CP-CDMA for constructing a new system. In the practical procedures, the CS codes are constructed group by group, in which the codes of the first group is obtained by using the orthogonal code to a periodical repetition in time domain. The codes in other groups can be obtained by shifting the frequencies of the first group. For the UL application, we propose a new multiple access scheme, termed GDMA, based on the use of CS codes. The theoretical work is done for estimating the MAI resulting from the users' moving speeds. This approach is confirmed by the simulation results.
