Abstract:Background and Objective: Dental caries has a high incidence and is easily undiagnosed in the clinic. This study proposes an automatic recognition and segmentation algorithm for teeth and caries on cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) based on the Mask R-CNN. The main optional hyperparameters for the neural network training process were compared. Methods: The experiment used 8512 CBCT images to compare the performance of three Mask R-CNN neural network groups, including the nontransfer learning random group, transfer learning COCO group, and transfer learning ImageNet group, through the training loss value, detection and training time, mean average precision (mAP), and coverage precision. Results: The experiment showed that the nontransfer learning process was not feasible, with significantly worse performance than the two transfer learning processes. This study showed that transfer learning using the COCO database can be trained to 200 epochs to obtain better recognition results; the mAP of tooth recognition was 81.260, that of caries recognition was 77.273, and the detection time was within 0.5 s. The study further compared the coverage precision. At low coverage precision, although the final value in the COCO group was similar to that in the ImageNet group, the initial value in the COCO group was higher. At high coverage precision, the initial value in the COCO group score not only reached 55.722 at 200 epochs but was also significantly higher than that in the ImageNet group, p<0.05. In the comparison of the overall coverage precision, the AP value in the COCO group was significantly greater than that in the ImageNet group at epochs of 100, 200, and 300, all with a significant difference of p<0.05.Conclusion: Automatic recognition of teeth and caries on CBCT can be achieved using Mask R-CNN with ResNet-50. Better hyperparameters for the model should include the transfer learning COCO database neural network trained to 200 epochs, which can detect both teeth or caries within 0.5 s. Combining the precision and recall, the model's recognition accuracies were 81.260 for teeth and 77.273 for caries, so the model has certain clinical potential and application prospects.
