Abstract:Nonoxidative coupling of methane exhibits promising prospect in that it affords value-added hydrocarbons and hydrogen with high atom economy. However, challenge remains in direct, selective conversion of methane to more valuable hydrocarbons like olefins. The current work presents a catalyst with well-dispersed Ta atoms anchored by graphitic C3N4-supported phthalocyanine. Such a catalyst is able to convert methane selectively to ethylene and propylene at a relatively low temperature (350 °C). The conception of the active center and construction of the catalyst have been described, and the origins of the catalytic performance are discussed.

Abstract:High transformation for propane and CO2 reaction to propylene (PDH-CO2) impelled by the reverse water-gas shift entails strong catalysts toward the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) as well as propane dehydrogenation (PDH). A series of Co modified Fe2O3-ZrO2 with proportions of 3–9 wt.% (nCoFe-ZrO2) were synthesized using an oxalate coprecipitation method and their catalytic activity for PDH-CO2 at 550 °C was studied. 7CoFe-ZrO2 displayed the highest conversion to both CO2 and propane (37.6% and 47.4%) and propylene yield (38.1%) at a lower apparent activation energy. The interaction between the Co species and the Fe species and its effects on the active Fe3O4 and the adsorption of propane/CO2 were revealed using XRD, UV-Vis DRS, SEM/TEM, XPS, NH3/CO2/C3H8-TPD, and H2-TPR analysis. With Co modification, the reduction of Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 was enhanced, which accelerated RWGS in addition to PDH. The key role of OOCH intermediate for promoting PDH and RWGS during PDH-CO2 reaction was traced through in situ DRIFTS characterization.

Abstract:During propane dehydrogenation in the CO2 atmosphere (PDH-CO2), Fe-based catalysts deactivate due to undue reduction of active FeOx to Fe or FeCx and thus engender carbon deposits. Herein, CoFeZr@Silicalite-1 (S-1) with the embedment of Co, Fe, and Zr nanostructures in S-1 was constructed and exhibited stable catalysis for the PDH-CO2 reaction at 550 degrees C with high selectivity to propylene. 0.5CoFeZr@S-1 persisted a propylene selectivity of 97% and a propane conversion of 23% over a time-on-stream of 120 h. X-ray diffraction, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen characterization confirmed the interactions between Co, Fe, and Zr, due to their incorporation into the S-1 framework. On the one hand, the interconversion of the formed Co2+-O tetrahedron and Co2+-O octahedron during the reaction promoted electron transfer between Fe3+ and Fe2+ of the FeOx species, stabilizing the active phase and the catalytic cycle. On the other hand, the resulting medium-strong base sites improved C3H8 conversion and diminished carbon deposition by exerting the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) and the reverse Boudouard reactions, respectively. Moreover, the HCOO*- and CH3O*-mediated pathway for this RWGS-propelled PDH was proposed based on in situ DRIFTS characterization.
Promotional Effect of ZrO2 on Supported FeCoK Catalysts for Ethylene Synthesis from Catalytic CO2 Hydrogenation

Abstract:This study is to convert renewable H(2 )and increasingly concerned CO2 to ethylene or C2H4 over Fe3.33Co1.67K5/ZrO2 and Fe3.33Co1.67K5/Al2O3 catalysts. The ZrO2 support provides amounts of surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) as well as stable and rich surface hydroxyl groups (-OH), which promotes the Fe3.33Co1.67K5/ZrO2 catalysts with 5% Fe and Co loadings to achieve C2H4 space time yield (STY) of 0.064 mmol(C2H4.)m(-2) cat . h(-1 )at 290 degrees C and 2.0 MPa, while the Fe3.33Co1.67K5/Al2O3 catalysts only reach C2H4 STY of 0.009 mmol(C2H4) . m(-2) cat . h(-1) at 330 degrees C and 2 MPa Fe3.33Co1.67K5/ZrO2 catalysts are very promising for converting the captured CO2 and renewable H-2 to highly demanded C2H4. Catalytic Combustion of Propane over Zr-Modified Co3O4 Catalysts: an Experimental and Theoretical Study

Abstract:As one of the domain volatile organic compounds (VOC), short chain alkane is an obstacle for low-temperature purification. Here, cobalt-zirconium oxides catalysts in a range of Co/Zr ratios were synthesized by sol-gel method for the catalytic combustion of propane. The result indicates that the catalyst with a ratio of Co to Zr of 4 (Co4Zr1) not only exhibits the superior catalytic performance with 90% conversion at 242 C, but also maintains high thermal stability and water resistance. The synergistic effect between Co and Zr over cobalt zirconium oxides catalysts contributes to the high increase of catalytic activity, which are relevant to the formation of ZrO2-Co3O4 solid solution. Additionally, the introduced Zr leads to more surface Co3+ species and surface-absorbed oxygen over Co4Zr1 catalyst. Moreover, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) reveals Co4Zr1 catalyst exposes abundant (220) crystal face. Density functional theory (DFT) suggests that Co3O4 (220) shows lowest adsorption energy (-0.71 eV) and the formation of oxygen defects will reduce the adsorption energy (-1.03 eV). All these results confirm that the CoxZry catalysts are promising alternative for propane degradation and provide important guiding significance for the design of catalysts and catalytic combustion kinetics.

Abstract:Fe-containing ZSM-5 catalysts are reported to be efficient catalysts for the partial oxidation of propane to oxygenated products at reaction temperatures as low as 50 degrees C in an aqueous phase reaction when using the green oxidant H2O2. It was previously proposed that extra framework Fe species at the exchange sites of the zeolite are responsible for activation of both the alkane and hydrogen peroxide. Through a systematic study of the influence of framework topology and exchange properties, it is now shown that this high catalytic activity is specific to the MFI-type BrOnsted acidic zeolite ZSM-5. Furthermore, through a simple aqueous acid washing treatment, leaching of approximately 77% of iron present within a Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst only caused the relative propane conversion to decrease by 17%; implying that most of the initially loaded Fe does not actually contribute to the catalytic activity. This small change in conversion after excess' Fe removal, amounts to a three-fold increase in turnover frequency (TOF) (Fe) from 66h(-1) to 232h(-1) compared with the parent Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst. By comparing these samples, it is shown by NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, Al-27 magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and TEM analysis that surface iron oxide species are effectively spectators in the oxidation of propane with H2O2. This provides further insight as to the location and true nature of the catalytically active Fe species.

Abstract:Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with carbon dioxide (CO 2 -ODP) characterizes the tandem dehydrogenation of propane to propylene with the reduction of the greenhouse gas of CO 2 to valuable CO. However, the existing catalyst is limited due to the poor activity and stability, which hinders its industrialization. Herein, we design the finned Zn-MFI zeolite encapsulated noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) as bifunctional catalysts () for CO 2 -ODP. Characterization results reveal that the Zn 2+ species are coordinated with the MFI zeolite matrix as isolated cations and the NPs of Pt, Rh, or RhPt are highly dispersed in the zeolite crystals. The isolated Zn 2+ cations are very effective for activating the propane and the small NPs are favorable for activating the CO 2 , which synergistically promote the selective transformation of propane and CO 2 to propylene and CO. As a result, the optimal 0.25%Rh0.50% catalyst shows the best propylene yield, satisfactory CO 2 conversion, and long-term stability. Moreover, considering the tunable synergetic effects between the isolated cations and NPs, the developed approach offers a general guideline to design more efficient CO 2 -ODP catalysts, which is validated by the improved performance of the bifunctional catalysts via simply substituting Sn 4+ cations for Zn 2+ cations in the MFI zeolite matrix.

Abstract:Non-oxidative dehydrogenation of propane is a highly efficient approach for industrial preparation of propene that is commonly catalyzed by noble Pt or toxic Cr catalysts and suffers from coking. In this work, ferric catalyst confined in a zeolite framework was synthesized by a hydrothermal procedure. The isolated Fe in the framework formed distorted tetrahedra, which were beneficial for the selective dehydrogenation of propane and reached over 95 % propene selectivity and over 99 % total olefins selectivity. This catalyst had a silanol-free structure and was oxygen tolerant, hydrothermally stable, and coke free, with a deactivation constant of 0.01 h-1 . This study provided guidance for the synthesis of structural heteroatomic zeolite and efficient propane non-oxidative dehydrogenation over early transition metals.
Total oxidation of propane over Co3O4-based catalysts: Elucidating the influence of Zr dopant

Abstract:A series of Zr-doped Co3O4 catalysts (x% Zr-Co3O4), prepared by citrate sol-gel method with a low doping amount of zirconium, was applied in the catalytic oxidation of 1000 ppm propane at a weight hourly space velocity of 40,000 mL g−1 h−1. Different techniques were used to characterize the catalysts. The results showed that the physicochemical properties and catalytic performances of the x% Zr-Co3O4 catalysts were significantly influenced by the addition of zirconium. Only a small part of Zr could be doped into the Co3O4 lattice and the spare Zr would prefer to aggregate on the surface to form zirconium oxide. In the x% Zr-Co3O4 catalysts, Zr disordered Co3O4 spinel is formed by entering into the Co3O4 lattice and forming Co-O-Zr species, resulting in smaller Co3O4 crystallite size, larger specific surface area, better low-temperature reducibility, higher surface Co2+ concentration, and higher content of surface oxygen vacancies and active oxygen species. The best performance was achieved on 1% Zr-Co3O4 for propane oxidation, with 90% propane conversion at 241 °C. The most active catalyst showed excellent performance in toluene and propene oxidation as well. Propane reaction tests, carried out without oxygen in the gas stream, indicated the promoting effect of the low amount of Zr on the oxygen mobility of x% Zr-Co3O4 catalysts. Durability tests of propane oxidation showed that stable conversion could be achieved over 1% Zr-Co3O4, thus being a potential active catalyst for practical application.

Abstract:Selective oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with CO 2 (CO 2 -ODP) represents a promising pathway of propylene production and CO 2 utilization. Presently, vanadium (V) based catalysts are commonly used due to the excellent redox ability originated from the multivalent V. However, the CO 2 -ODP reaction mechanism remains elusive, limiting the rational design of highly efficient catalytic systems. Herein, we introduced Fe into impregnated V-Al 2 O 3 to build a dual-sites catalyst including Fe and V, achieving a C 3 H 8 conversion at ∼43 % and C 3 H 6 selectivity exceed 80 %. Via regulating the Fe/V molar ratio, we clearly describe that the formation of unique Fe-O-V facilitated the CO 2 dissociation. Intrinsically, V is the main active site contributing for C 3 H 8 dehydrogenation while Fe site is responsible for the CO 2 dissociation, replenishing lattice oxygen to enhance oxidative dehydrogenation of C 3 H 8 . The design of dual-sites catalyst and extraction of molecular understanding provide guidance for the rational development of highly active CO 2 -ODP catalysts.

Abstract:Dehydrogenation of propane to propylene over zinc oxide catalysts supported on steaming-treated HZSM-5 in the presence of CO2 has been investigated. The highest catalytic performance can be achieved on the 5%ZnO/HZSM-5(650) catalyst with the HZSM-5 support steaming at 650 degrees C, which allows the maximum propylene yields of 29.7% and 20.3% at the initial and steady states, respectively, in the catalytic dehydrogenation of propane at 600 degrees C. The superior catalytic performance of this catalyst can be attributed to high dispersion of ZnO and appropriate Br?nsted acidity of the HZSM-5(650) support. The catalytic stability is enhanced by the addition of CO2 to the feed gas due to the suppression of coke formation.

Abstract:The shale gas revolution and the carbon-neutrality goal are motivating the landscape toward the synthesis of value-added chemicals or fuels from underutilized ethane with the assistance of greenhouse gas CO 2 . Combining ethane aromatization with CO 2 reduction offers an opportunity to directly produce liquid products for facile separation, storage, and transportation. In the present work, Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts showed promise in the simultaneous CO 2 reduction and ethane aromatization at atmospheric pressure and 873 K. The catalysts were further investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements under in-situ conditions, indicating that most of Fe species existed in the form of Fe oxides and a portion of Fe was incorporated into the ZSM-5 framework generating Lewis acid sites. Both types of Fe species remained almost unchanged under reaction conditions, contributing to an enhanced aromatization activity of Fe/ZSM-5. The effects of CO 2 and steam on the acid sites and in turn aromatization activity were also investigated by transient studies, which exhibited a reversible modification behavior. Moreover, CO 2 was identified to be critical to enhance coke resistance and in turn catalyst stability. This work highlights the feasibility of using CO 2 to assist the upgrading of abundant ethane from shale gas to aromatics over non-precious Fe-based zeolite catalysts.

Abstract:Oxide-Zeolite (OX-ZEO) bifunctional catalyst design concept has been exemplified in several processes to direct conversion syngas to value-added chemicals and fuels such as mixed light olefins, ethylene, aromatics and gasoline. Herein we demonstrate that the product can be steered toward liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with a selectivity up to 89% in hydrocarbons especially propane selectivity reaching 80% at CO conversion of 63% using ZnCrOx-H-SSZ-39 catalyst. Interestingly, the quantity of the acid sites of SSZ-39 does not influence obviously the hydrocarbon distribution but the strength is crucial for selective formation of propane. This finding provides an alternative route of LPG synthesis from a variety of carbon resources via syngas.
CO2 Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane to Olefin over Cr-M (M = Zr, La, Fe) Based Zeolite Catalyst

Abstract:CO2 oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (CO2-ODHP), being not only favorable for olefin production but also beneficial for CO2 emission control, has recently attracted great attention. Here, a series of single metal (Cr) and bimetal (Zr, La, Fe) modified ZSM-5 zeolites were prepared via an impregnation method. It was found that the bimetal modified ZSM-5 possessed much higher C3H8 and CO2 conversion than that of monometallic modified Cr3%-ZSM-5 (Cr3%-Z5), especially for Cr3%Zr2%-ZSM-5 (Cr3%Zr2%-Z5), which displayed the highest activity (65.4%) and olefin yield (1.65 × 103 μmol·gcat−1 h−1). Various characterizations were performed, including XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, H2-TPR, Raman, XPS, HAAD-STEM, and TEM. It was revealed that Zr not only favored an improvement in the redox ability of Cr, but also contributed to the surface dispersion of loaded Cr species, constituting two major reasons explaining the superior activity of Cr3%Zr2%-Z5. To further improve CO2-ODHP catalytic behavior, a series of Cr3%-ZSM-5@SBA-15-n composite zeolite catalysts with diverse (ZSM-5/SBA-15) mass ratios were prepared (Cr3%-ZS-n, n = 0.5, 2, 6, 16), which screened out an optimum mass ratio of six. Based on this, the Cr3%Zr2%-ZS-6 compound was further prepared, and it eventually achieved even higher CO2-ODHP activity (76.9%) and olefin yield (1.72 × 103 μmol·gcat−1 h−1). Finally, the CO2-ODHP reaction mechanism was further investigated using in situ FTIR, and it was found that the reaction followed the Mars–van Krevelen mechanism, wherein CO2 participated in the reaction through generation of polydentate carbonates. The Cr6+ constituted as the active site, which was reduced to Cr3+ after the dihydrogen reaction, and was then further oxidized into Cr6+ by CO2, forming polydentate carbonates, and thus cycling the reactive species Cr6+. Additionally, assisted by a Brönsted acid site (favoring breaking of the C-C bond), C2H4 and CH4 were produced.

Abstract:The inherent variability and insufficiencies in the co-production of propylene from steam crackers has raised concerns regarding the global propylene production gap and has directed industry to develop more on-purpose propylene technologies. The oxidative dehydrogenation of propane by CO2 (CO2-ODHP) can potentially fill this gap while consuming a greenhouse gas. Non-precious FeNi and precious NiPt catalysts supported on CeO2 have been identified as promising catalysts for CO2-ODHP and dry reforming, respectively, in flow reactor studies conducted at 823 K. In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements revealed the oxidation states of metals under reaction conditions and density functional theory calculations were utilized to identify the most favorable reaction pathways over the two types of catalysts.

Abstract:Selective conversion of CO 2 into light olefins (C 2=–C 4=) has attracted considerable research interests. However, effective regulation of C 2=–C 4= distribution or selective production of specific olefins is still challenging. Herein, we report a new catalyst system composed of Zn 0.5Ce 0.2Zr 1.8O 4 solid solution and H-RUB-13 zeolite, which shows C 2=–C 4= yield as high as 16.1%, being 2.3–3.3 times of those reported in literature, but CO selectivity of only 26.5% at 350°C and 3.5 MPa. More strikingly, propene and butene account for about 90% of C 2=–C 4=. In situ spectroscopy, isotopic-labeling experiments, and DFT calculations indicate that formate and methoxyl are the dominant intermediates for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol on Zn 0.5Ce 0.2Zr 1.8O 4, whereas CO formation via RWGS reaction is substantially suppressed. By tuning the acid site content, strength, and distribution in H-RUB-13, the alkene-based cycle in MTO is significantly enhanced, and consequently, leads to the formation of more propene and butene.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of CO 2 into value-added hydrocarbons, particularly single products, is of great interest. However, this is a challenge because of the simultaneous occurrence of numerous competing elementary reactions. Here a GaZrO x /H-SSZ-13 composite is developed, which shows propane selectivity in hydrocarbons of 79.5%, along with butane selectivity of 9.9% and CO selectivity of 31.8%, at CO 2 conversion of 43.4%. Such catalytic performance can be well maintained within 500 h. Incorporation of proper amounts of Ga into ZrO 2 promotes methanol formation due to generation of high concentrations of surface oxygen vacancies with moderate CO 2 adsorption strength. The large number of strong-acid sites of H-SSZ-13 seriously restricts conversion of generated methanol into aromatics at high H 2 pressure, suppressing the aromatics-based cycle and favouring the alkene-based cycle instead. Accordingly, far more propene and butene are obtained than ethene, although they are rapidly hydrogenated to corresponding alkanes on the strong-acid sites of H-SSZ-13.

Abstract:A series of Zr-doped Co(3)O(4 )catalysts (x% Zr-Co3O4), prepared by citrate sol-gel method with a low doping amount of zirconium, was applied in the catalytic oxidation of 1000 ppm propane at a weight hourly space velocity of 40,000 mL g(-1) h(-1). Different techniques were used to characterize the catalysts. The results showed that the physicochemical properties and catalytic performances of the x% Zr-Co(3)O(4 )catalysts were significantly influenced by the addition of zirconium. Only a small part of Zr could be doped into the Co(3)O(4 )lattice and the spare Zr would prefer to aggregate on the surface to form zirconium oxide. In the x% Zr-Co(3)O(4 )catalysts, Zr disordered Co3O4 spinet is formed by entering into the Co(3)O(4 )lattice and forming Co-O-Zr species, resulting in smaller Co(3)O(4 )crystallite size, larger specific surface area, better low-temperature reducibility, higher surface Co2+ concentration, and higher content of surface oxygen vacancies and active oxygen species. The best performance was achieved on 1% Zr-Co3O4 for propane oxidation, with 90% propane conversion at 241 degrees C. The most active catalyst showed excellent performance in toluene and propene oxidation as well. Propane reaction tests, carried out without oxygen in the gas stream, indicated the promoting effect of the low amount of Zr on the oxygen mobility of x% Zr-Co(3)O(4 )catalysts. Durability tests of propane oxidation showed that stable conversion could be achieved over 1% Zr-Co3O4, thus being a potential active catalyst for practical application.

Abstract:Dehydrogenation of propane to propene in the presence of CO2 was investigated over zinc oxide supported on HZSM-5 with high Si/Al ratios. The stability of supported ZnO catalysts for the reaction improves with increasing the Si/Al ratio of the HZSM-5 support, while the catalytic activity shows a contrary trend. A highly active and stable catalyst, ZnO supported on HZSM-5 with a Si/Al ratio of 160, was obtained, with a propane conversion of 41.5% and a propene yield of 25.8% at steady state. The results of NH3-TPD and FT-IR spectra of pyridine adsorption reveal that the enhancement of the catalytic stability stems from the decrease in acidity of the catalysts, resulting in the suppression of the side reactions, such as cracking, oligomerization and aromatization. This can be verified by the fact that the amount of coke deposited on the catalyst diminishes with raising the Si/Al ratio of the HZSM-5 support. The promoting effect of CO2 on the dehydrogenation reaction is observed, which can be attributed to the reverse water-gas shift reaction. The catalytic stability is also enhanced by the introduction of CO2 to the feed gas.
