Abstract:The Mg-2Gd-0.5Mn alloy exhibits excellent ductility at room temperature. In this study, the microstructure evolution and deformation mechanism of Mg-2Gd-0.5Mn alloy during tensile process is investigated by quasi-in-situ electron backscattered diffraction and two-beam diffraction. The initial microstructure of as-extruded Mg-2Gd-0.5Mn alloy is completely recrystallized, and the texture is typical rare earth texture. With the increase of tensile strain, {10-12} tensile twins begin to appear. The nucleation and growth of twins promote the transformation of texture type from rare earth texture to strong basal texture. Meanwhile, the result of slip trace show that basal slip is the dominant deformation mode, and the activation of non-basal slip is also crucial to the contribution of ductility. The initiation of dislocations can coordinate the strain of grains along the c-axis. In addition, the interaction between the different deformation modes ensures the smooth progress of overall plastic deformation. The Visco-Plastic Self-Consistent (VPSC) modeling quantifies the relative activity of different deformation modes. More importantly, the segregation of Gd atoms can effectively improve the stability of grain boundaries and avoid the premature generation of cracks.
