Abstract:Suppose that A is a unital purely infinite simple C∗-algebra. If the class [1] of the unit 1 in K0(A) has torsion, then csr(A) = ∞; if [1] is torsion-free in K0(A), then csr(A) = 2. If A is a non-unital purely infinite simple C∗-algebra, then csr(A) = 2. Before considering the connected stable rank of the purely infinite simple C∗algebra, we need to introduce some notation as follows. For the C∗-algebra A with unit 1, we denote by Un(A) the group of unitary elements in the matrix algebra Mn(A) and also denote by U0 n(A) the connected component of 1n in Un(A). We view An = {(a1, . . . , an) |ai ∈ A} as the set of all n × 1 matrices over A. For a = (a1, . . . , an) , we set a∗ = (a∗1, . . . , a∗n)—the 1× n over A. Put Sn(A) = { (a1, . . . , an) ∈ An|a∗a = n ∑
